Parent Calendar
Dear Parents & Carers, It has been a fantastic start to the year back in our home at the heart of the community, and also a historic term for KAA in our first year as a full school with over 1,200 students in years 7 to 13. What follows in this issue of INTREPIDUS should give parents a flavour of life at KAA and the huge range of extra curricular activities available to our students, including our sixth form Oxford Residential, the Big Show: Our Story, House Music, House Art & Design and more.
In the race for this year’s House Cup, Angelou have finished the autumn term just head of Honeyball after winning both House Music and House Art & Design. As Honeyball have proved this term, commendations, attendance and interim competitions are key to earning house points! Next term we also have House Dance and House Debating, so lots to look forward to. Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our parents and carers for their support this term. Whether you came along to the Big Show in November, attended the Christmas Concert, helped with baking for Charity Week, or collected students from weekend rehearsals or sports fixtures; thank you for getting involved and supporting the KAA community. With best wishes for the Christmas break,
David Benson Principal
INDUCTION On Wednesday 5th September we were delighted to return to our building on Silchester Road at the heart of the community. It was a historic moment as we opened our doors in our first year as a full school with all years from 7 to 13.
Before our displacement to the temporary Portakabins on Scrubs Lane, the school was previously used by the community for various meetings and events. The community use of the building is back in full flow, with fitness lessons, sports clubs, supplementary schools and church groups using the school building again. Bookings for community use can be made through Schools Plus online at http:// www.schoolsplus.co.uk/kaa/ or by calling 0345 222 2323.
Our thanks to students and parents for their support during our move home. As ever, any reports or questions about the KAA building are available for parents on our website at www.kaa.org.uk/students-parents/KAA1-FAQs.

The first major house competition of the academic year was house music, with the winners set to take 20,000 house points. It was a delight to have our first house music with all years 7 to 13 back in our fantastic theatre, and a brilliant way to kick off the house competitions for the 2018-19 academic year. On Thursday 18th October over 130 students from years 7 to 13 took part in the live finals. The quality of entries was - as ever - exceptional and really showed the hard work students had put in over the half term during tutor time rehearsals. Every single one of the students involved should be proud of their performance. The judges awarded first place to Angelou, who performed a cover of Say Something (I’m Giving Up On You) by A Great Big World. This included solos from Eliana (8 Yousafzai), Salvinna (9 Grey-Thompson), Natalie (10 Fitzgerald), Sara (11 Simmons) and Luana (13 Ibrahim). Second place went to Honeyball for their cover of You’ve Got The Love, originally by Florence + the Machine. With Stefano (11 Winfrey) leading on piano, Honeyball had a full band made up of Musa (10 Lennon) on guitar, Emin (7 Gupta) on bass, and Tyler (9 Murray) and Tyrshondre (9 Holmes) playing percussion. There were also vocal solos from Nada (8 Truth), Hollie (9 Murray), Ana (8 Truth) and Jennifer (11 Winfrey). Pankhurst earnt third place with their cover of Beneath Your Beautiful, originally by Labyrinth. The performance was led beautifully by Melina (7 Beckett) on cello, with Morgan (11 Berners-Lee) on drums and Mr Rigby accompanying on piano. Soloists for Pankhurst were Frankie (7 Beckett) Johara (9 Lewis), Paige (9 Hamilton), Rolyn (9 Leiws), Lyric (10 Chaplin), Fatima (11 Berners-Lee) and Suad (11 Balon). Franklin came fourth with their cover of These Days by Rudimental with a choir of over 40 students. Adea (10 Baker) accompanied on piano, with Kyryll (7 Stoppard), Diamond (7 Hansberry), Katie (8 Jones) and Luke (8 Jones) on trumpets, saxophone and cajon.

On Thursday 13th December we welcomed students, parents and staff to our Christmas Concert. The evening was full of festive songs, mince pies and Christmas costumes.
ANTI-BULLYING WEEK
A N T I - BU L LY I N G W E E K
Anti-Bullying Week at KAA is one of our most important weeks of the year. It is a week where we explore the various forms of bullying, and through engaging and interesting activities students are made aware of what they can do to see, stop and prevent bullying at the academy. This year we were incredibly proud of the number of students (and staff!) who got involved; it was our most successful Anti-Bullying Week yet. Students participated in events during the week, with each day having its own focus. On Monday we explored racism; on Tuesday we looked at LGBT and how love should mean love regardless of your sexuality or gender; on Wednesday students were made aware of the different forms of bullying that can take place online/on their phones; Thursday students addressed the issue of inequality between male and females historically and how the #metoo campaign has raised some serious concerns in the workplace and lastly on Friday the students addressed individuality and autism awareness. The week was a roaring success and although KAA’s focus on Anti Bullying is all-year-round it was fantastic to see the commitment to stamping out and addressing any form of inequality at KAA in such a high profile way. If you see or spot any form of bullying at KAA report it. One way of doing that is to email bullying@kaa.org.uk – you can attach any images from social media if relevant.

STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTION
STUDENT COUNCIL 2018-19
The student council at KAA acts as a bridge between teachers and students and makes a real difference. They are the voice for the students and are able to make a real impact.
Students up for election campaigned over the Autumn 2 term with speeches in Year assemblies and campaign posters around the school. Well done to every single candidate - speaking in front of the whole year group is no mean feat!
Election day took place on Thursday 13th December and the results can now be revealed. Congratulations to the elected student councillors; Ashraf (7 Parker), Sina (7 Hansberry), Rami (8 Yousafzai), Sanaa (8 Tambo), Anthony (9 Holmes), Shannon (9 Hamilton), Taif (10 Chaplin), Hannah (10 Hepburn), Ibrahim (12 Fry), Hoda (12 Nightingale) and Ty (8 Yousafzai). The new student council was announced in the end of term assembly on Wednesday 19th December and will meet on Friday 11th January for the first time, when they will appoint a chairperson for the council. Students can pass on their comments and suggestions to the student council via their form reps, or by visiting the student council during morning reading on a Friday morning.

VISITORS
MAYOR OF LONDON, SADIQ KHAN
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, visited KAA students for the second time on Tuesday 11th December to discuss extra-curricular activities supported by the KAA Intrepidus Trust. The Mayor last visited KAA in November 2017 to speak to sixth formers as part of our sixth form lecture series. During his visit, Sadiq visited a Year 11 history lesson and spoke to students about their upcoming GCSE exams and what they were learning. He then spoke to a group of students from Year 7 to 13 about a range of topics including the Year 12 Oxford residential, rowing and climbing enrichments and the Duke of Edinburgh award, as well as answering questions from students such as one from Head Boy Rostom about what Brexit will mean for Londoners. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan said: “It was a real privilege to return to the Kensington Aldridge Academy today and speak with pupils and staff. Despite unimaginably difficult circumstances, the school and the wider community has been a real beacon of strength and resilience for all Londoners.
AUTHOR FRANK COTTRELL BOYCE On Thursday 4th October, Year 7 were lucky enough to receive a visit from Frank Cottrell Boyce. The children’s author re-enacted scenes from his book Framed, read excerpts from his latest book Sputnik’s Guide to the Universe and shared images from Dreamworks’ adaptation of his latest book. Miss O’Regan’s Morning Reading group (who are reading Frank’s book Framed) presented him with a personalised poster and he signed his autograph on their planners and Morning Reading books. He also signed some of his books as prizes to be given out throughout the year.

Thank you to Mr Waller for organising the brilliant visit. Keep your eyes peeled for more literary visits during the second annual KAA Literary Festival coming up in March 2019!
Our first ever Year 11 work experience week took place during the second week of the autumn half term, from Monday 28th October to Friday 2nd November. Students spent the week in work places ranging from pharmacies and dental surgeries to schools and charities. Sofia (11 Jobs) London Institute of Medical Science “On the first day I inoculated some bacteria in an antibiotic. I also did some research about a type of non-parasite worm with a short life cycle of about 2-3 days. I used problem solving during the various experiments my supervisor and I completed together. Later in the week I looked into flies in a microscope. I differentiated different types of flies, by gender and by characteristics. I used PCR to find the specific gene strand for sequencing, and used electrolysis to separate the DNA.”

“Exemplary. The students were polite, helpful and proactive: an absolute credit to KAA.” Oxford Gardens Primary School
“Lovely students who were very keen to learn. I am happy to work with students from KAA!” British Red Cross
“Both the students were incredibly eager to take as much as they could from the placement, and approached each task with gusto.” Dancing Ledge Productions
Ethan (11 Kidston) Into University I was at Into University for my work experience. Some days I was in the office doing admin tasks, such as printing and laminating templates for new projects. Other days I went on trips to universities and also to the Leighton House Museum. Over the week I really improved my teamwork, as there were lots of tasks that required working in a group. Overall, it made me more accustomed to a working environment, and more comfortable being around people in a formal setting.
“Ahmed joined us at a busy time and jumped straight into work with no issues at all. He was a massive help to the team. It would have been great if we had him for longer!” Panacea Applications Limited

SIXTH FORM
SIXTH FORM OXFORD RESIDENTIAL Our third cohort of new Year 12s went on our annual Oxford residential from Friday 21st to Monday 24th September at Lady Margaret Hall College. The sixth form residential allows our students to get a flavour of university life before beginning to think about the UCAS process. Being immersed in an academic environment as students get to know their peers is a fantastic start to the academic year. Students benefited from study skills lectures and workshops, academic lessons with their KAA teachers in seminar style settings, and a lecture delivered by Professor Dorling from the School of Geography on the topic of “What does Brexit tell us about the British? Our thanks to the staff and student ambassadors at Lady Margaret Hall and to the KAA Intrepidus Trust (KIT) for making the residential possible.
P O L I T I C S S O C I E T Y V I S I T PA R L I A M E N T Our sixth form academic societies are an opportunity for students to go beyond the syllabus and step away from exam requirements. Our Politics Society did just that when they visited Parliament on Wednesday 17th October. The group had a tour of Westminster Hall and other parliamentary buildings before going to the gallery to watch the vote on universal credit. After this, students were welcomed at Portcullis House, which holds the offices of many MPs and their staff. Students had the opportunity here to discuss politics from around the world! SIXTH FORM LECTURE SERIES
Last year our sixth form lecture series saw our students hearing lectures from speakers including Sadiq Khan, Shami Chakrabarti and Nobel peace prize winner Adolfo Perez Esqui.
This term our students have enjoyed talks from a range of visitors from different sectors, including Jane Bateman (Head of International Relations at the Football Association), Tim Marshall (Journalist and former foreign affairs editor for Sky News), Craig Sciba (freelance Creative Director and former designer for Disney), Seyi Afolabi (Executive Officer at Commonwealth Association UK), Laurence Bowen (film producer and CEO of Dancing Ledge Productions) and a range of staff from BBC1 Xtra (pictured). Speakers lined up to visit the sixth form in the spring term include Mike Dixon (CEO of Addaction), Sue Berelowitz (former Deputy Children’s Commissioner for England), and Kate Moore (author of The Radium Girls).
M O D E L U N I T E D N AT I O N S T R I P On Wednesday 12 t h and Thursday 13 th December a group of sixth form students went to the Model UN hosted at the International Maritime Organisation.

After registration, there was a welcome ceremony with speeches, and then all the delegates made their way to the conference room of their committee, where they spent the rest of the two days. Following a roll-call, a delegate entered a motion to open the debate. Once this was seconded, the committee switched between Speakers' List, Moderated Caucus and Unmoderated Caucus until draft resolutions had been completed, merged, and were ready to be presented. The students debated a range of topics, including indigenous human rights, child trafficking, gender equality and the rights of refugees. At the end of the second day, there was a closing ceremony, with a talk from Stonewall, the LGBT charity. Our students represented KAA admirably and learnt a great deal from the two day event.

RESIDENTIAL TRIPS
A RT & F R E N C H T R I P TO PA R I S On Monday 22nd October, 20 Year 11 students opted to forego their lie-ins in favour of catching a 7.30am Eurostar to Paris. The trip intended to allow students of French to practise their language skills by speaking to real life French people and students of art to see some of the world’s most famous paintings. Despite the painfully early start and the greyness of the Parisian skyline, the trip definitely achieved both of its ambitions. It was lovely to see the students bracing themselves to order a drink or a meal in their best French accents and they clearly appreciated the opportunity to see first-hand the work of artists such as Van Gogh and Monet. The trip covered most of what Paris has to offer, from the Eiffel Tower to a cruise on the Seine and some brisk walks around the Jardin des Tuileries.
BERLIN TRIP During the first week of the October half term holiday another 26 Year 11 students set off for Berlin. For students studying German GCSE, the trip provided the opportunity to learn and use German language skills and to experience German life and culture first hand. History GCSE students used the trip to further their understanding of Germany, which is linked to their study of Weimar Germany. The group visited the East German Museum, the Reichstag and completed a walking tour of the city.
O U T WA R D B O U N D During the October half term Year 8s visited the Lake District on an action-packed Outward bound adventure holiday.

It was another very successful trip, with the highlight seeing the 12 Year 8 students working cohesively as a team to navigate themselves up a mountain and through woodland at night!
Also over the October half term, Miss Paine and the Jamie’s Farm team took 7 students from years 8 to 11 away to Chamonix in France for four days in the mountains. The group spent 4 days living at just over 1000 metres in a beautiful chalet right on the grassy piste, surrounded by the French alps, alpine forest and far away from the concrete jungle of west London. The most challenging yet most rewarding moment of the trip a 4 hour hike towards the summit of Mont Blanc. Ali Simmons), Jayden (10 Lennon), Loukay (8 Carter), Safiyah Jobs), Ria (10 Lennon), Alicia (9 Holmes), Aziza (8 Carter) Jamie’s Farm put KAA on the tallest mountain in Europe!

GERMAN CHRISTMAS MARKETS TRIP On Thursday 29th November, 27 Year 8 students set off to Germany for a three-day trip to the Cologne Christmas markets. The trip was organised to give students an experience of authentic German culture, practise their German speaking skills, and grow in independence by going away ‘by themselves’ to do some Christmas shopping. All 27 of the students rose to the challenge excellently! Despite the 4.30 AM departure, students were consistently polite, enthusiastic, kind and Intrepid in their use of German. We visited five different Christmas markets, Cologne Cathedral, the Lindt Chocolate Museum and took the Cologne Christmas train.

At the end of Aut1, the GCSE and A Level PE students had the pleasure of listening to Ose Aibangee, Head of Training and Development at TOCA Football UK. Ose spoke about his career background including being the Academy Director for Brentford FC and working at football clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur where he worked with a number of elite players, such as Harry Kane and Jack Wilshire. The focus of the talk was modern technology in sport, and Ose came to speak particularly about TOCA, which Zvezdana (12 Attlee) was able to translate for the class as ‘touch’ in Spanish. The students were eager to get up and have a go with this fantastic piece of technology that can release footballs at varying heights and speeds. At the end of the demonstration, the students had a Q&A session. The students were eager to ask questions ranging from wanting to know the course Ose studied at University, to which was the best football club he had worked at. It was a great way to finish the half term and a memorable experience for all involved. Thank you Ose for coming in to KAA!
On Wednesday 17th October, the A Level PE students travelled to Piccadilly Circus to visit Dr Gunther von Hagens’ renowned exhibition of real human bodies. The trip certainly sparked curiosity and brought to life the recent topics the students had covered in PE. The exhibition took the students on a journey through the human body and discovered the mysteries that lie underneath the skin. It certainly was a memorable and unique morning that Words: Thompson made us all appreciate theMiss magic that is the human body.

Sophie (10 Lennon), Jayden (10 Lennon), Sapphire (10 Kahlo) and Carlos (10 Baker) competed with composure and skill, completing some of the best routines they have ever done. The four of them have been training relentlessly this academic year and not only represented KAA in our first trampolining competition but they competed at an intermediate level, just behind the top elite group. All four students had a somersault in their routine and were inspired to reach the elite level in future. Watch this space!
KAA's indoor rowing squad came out with 2 silvers at this year’s Central Rowing competition! Zebedee (9 Lewis) steamed his way to 2nd place in the Y9 Boys Individual race and Pamela (10 Hepburn) teamed up with local BDA students in the Y10 Girls’ Relay race also taking silver! Both Zebedee and Jake (9 Holmes) smashed their 3 minute personal bests with Zebedee rowing 809 meters and Jake rowing 738.
The London Lions visited KAA on Wednesday 10th October to deliver a coaching session and Q&A to 30 Year 9 boys during their PE lesson. Lions MVP of the league and GB international, Justin Robinson, visited the school alongside team mates Jordan Spencer and Kervin Bristol. Justin commented, ‘We met a fantastic bunch of students and there’s certainly huge basketball talent within the school.”

The London Lions also donated 100 tickets for KAA students to watch them play the Newcastle Eagles at the Cooper Box arena on Friday 23rd November. The game was a tense one with no more than two points between the teams for the majority of the game, but the home team London Lions eventually got ahead and finished the game with a 96-78 win. Many thanks to the London Lions for the coaching clinic and the tickets! The team have offered tickets for future games so we look forward to taking more students to the Copper Box soon.
On Thursday 13th September students in year 8 and 9 had a beginners fencing session with Commonwealth gold and silver medal winners Tom Hendrie and Peter Barwell and under 11s England Youth Champion, Faaris El-saie.. With full fencing kit borrowed from Sussex House School, students were really able to get a taste for the sport! Our thanks to InterGenerate CIC for providing this unique opportunity for our students to try out a new sport.
