what is urban agriculture City of Pittsburgh regulations Zoning OpenSpacePGH examples: Larimer resources my contact information

United States Environmental Protection Agency urban agriculture projects range from small public and private community gardens to largerscale urban farms and orchards.

Pittsburgh Climate Action Plan

“Residents should participate in urban agriculture in any manner that suits them including, but no limited to, backyard gardening, raised bed gardening, rooftop gardening (including green roofs), and container gardening.

PITTSBURGH CLIMATE ACTION PLAN

VERSION 2.0

City of Pittsburgh Department of City Planning urban agriculture is a classification in the City of Pittsburgh Zoning Code that allows for a range of small to large scale agriculture, from chicken coop located in a backyard to a commercial farm

Office of City Planning: Zoning Code Primary Uses:

1. full-scale commercial growing of crops, and allows for raising of livestock with a minimum lot size of 3 acres 2. beekeeping as a primary use with a lot minimum of 2000 square feet 3. limited commercial where primary production is crops, no animals

Office of City Planning: Zoning Code Accessory Uses:

agriculture as secondary use allows for growing crops as a secondary use to another enterprise (for example, a small garden next to a restaurant) with or without animals

! " # $ " %& ' ! ( ) * & + , *+ - " ! & . / 0 .

OpenSpacePGH

OpenSpacePGH draft plan identifies urban agriculture as one of 16 potential uses for vacant land and supports the expansion of urban agriculture in the city

OpenSpacePGH

OpenSpacePGH draft plan recommends the reduction of “governmental barriers to the beneficial reuse of vacant and underutilized lands.

Pittsburgh Office of Neighborhood Initiatives: Edible Gardens program Goal: To improve availability of healthy foods in low-income City neighborhoods where access to affordable fresh produce is scarce. $44,000 will be dedicated to planting 10-15 high-yielding vegetable and fruit gardens. Partnering with the Mayor’s servePGH initiative and Department of Public Works, Edible Gardens will increase the amount of fresh produce available to residents in the City of Pittsburgh.

Manchester Bidwell Corporation’s Drew Mathieson Center

The Drew Mathieson Center is one of Western Pennsylvania’s premier educational greenhouses. The 40,000 square foot complex is situated on the Bidwell Training Center campus and was established to support training in the plant sciences. The center is the home for BTC’s Horticulture Technology Program and boasts four gutterconnected, high tech greenhouses with integrated classroom and lab components. It offers an applied learning experience for students aspiring to careers in landscaping, design, retail or wholesale floral, greenhouse operations and other horticulture/agricultural industries.
