ATLAS: THE BRAND!

!

Imagine ATLAS as a person. In their first year, I’ve given the magazine a juvenile personality. It’s grown from a little, inquisitive baby to a more experimental teen. It’s been angsty, it’s been sassy, it’s been nostalgic. One thing that has remained constant is the vision for who “Atlas” is. !

!

Who is she?! ‣ She thinks deeply and broadly about things that matter. She listens, contributes and shapes her own view. Sometimes it is objective, other times she finds herself rather irrationally angry, but she loves to argue. ! ‣ She’s adventurous. She loves to travel but never underestimates the pleasures hidden in her own backyard. ! ‣ She’s quick-witted. She says it how it is and calls people on their bullshit. She doesn’t care what people think. ! ‣ She’s poetic; drawn to the innate rhythm of your words, she builds characters in her head and vividly daydreams of the stories that will one day enthral dinner guests. ! ‣ She forgets to brush her hair and sometimes wears her brother’s clothes. She etches tattoos into her feet when she gets bored. She pierces her ears just to see how it looks.! ‣ She actively cultivates new talents, just for the hell of it. She’s a painter, a photographer, a writer, a gourmet chef. She dabbles in private, and appreciates in public. She has a certain aesthetic - a taste, if you will - for pared back, organic beauty. She sees patterns in organic structures, in architecture and loves the fine, purposeful lines in nature. ! ‣ Her music taste is broad and eclectic. She’s into 70’s reggae, knows all the words to Pink Flloyd but still lines up early for Stereosonic. She’s trap-come-EDM-come-British indie punk, but unashamedly sings to Hannah Montana. !

!

If ever you are lost for words, remember your imaginary friend. Write to her, entice her penchant for faraway lands and new experiences. Indulge her senses and draw her in with your poetry. She is easily enticed, but she’s flighty. It is your job to open her world. Raise her, shape her, cultivate her interests.!

!

The brand is innate in your choice of typography, in your choice of imagery - the colour associations, the aesthetic, the genres and the subjects of the photography. It will disseminate in the articles you choose, the way you edit and the language you choose. Carefully craft who she is, and grow her up how you see fit. She’s yours now!

CONTENT FLOW!

Content flow is absolutely paramount for readability. I’ve devised a loose structure to follow, but of course not each segment is fulfilled for each issue and sometimes you have one or more pieces for each segment so it is flexible and fluid depending on your content. !

!

DEADLINES! Similar to your coursework, ATLAS requires serious planning to achieve well-thought out publish dates and shelf life. Your publish dates should coincide with FSA event promotion terms and relate to when contributors are least busy! Below is an example of my first deadline schedule: !

If ever you find yourself in hot water, your committee should be your first port of call. It is a good idea to get to know your committee’s external interests and identify areas of knowledge and

passion so that if you ever find yourself short on content, you can approach them with an idea that appeals to them and they find easy to write! !

!

THE CONTRIBUTORS’ GUIDE! The Contributors’ Guide is essential for setting out the opportunities and expectations. You will need to devise your deadline schedule and manage your workload accordingly, allowing for time to read, respond & edit accordingly. The contributors guide will give prospective contributors some idea about what they’d like to write and sets a structure, length and idea of what you’re looking for. !

!

If ever you are approached, send them the PDF of the guide and ask what they would like to write, what their idea is and how they will approach their chosen topic. It also provides clarity for you as to what direction each article will take and encourages writers to get involved. It needn’t be long or hectic, just clear and inviting. !Make sure the deadlines are set, the segments are explained and the schedule is maintained. !

!

The 2014 Contributors’ Guide was as follows - you are welcome to continue using this, just update the contacts!

WHY SHOULD I WRITE FOR ATLAS? People have very different for writing. Some love to express themselves, while others want to educate or shine light on something in the shadows. We care primarily about getting your work professionally edited and published in as high a quality publication that you can find at university level. Keep in mind this means whatever you submit may undergo some editing and changes before print - as it would in any professional setting. We’ll work closely with you too before it goes to print so when ATLAS comes out, your article sits proudly among the pages and holds its own.

!

If writing is something you’d like to pursue as a career, it is in your best interests to write for us. Only positive things can come from the experience.

!

Come on now, be brave. Put your big girl panties on and march proudly across the border. Who cares if your visa’s invalid? It all makes for a good dinner party story.

!

HOW THIS WORKS - PITCHING If you’re interested in writing for ATLAS, keep reading and decide which segment you’d like to write, and what the requirements are. For step 2, email a short pitch to publications@sdsa.bond.edu.au. A 100-word synopsis is perfect.

!

We’ll help workshop your idea and try our hardest to suggest sources for your story before it gets underway. We’ll give you a deadline, and work with you as you craft your piece.

!

If you’re super keen to write for us but don’t have a specific pitch, email us and we can give you an idea from a bank of super-awesome ideas to deposit.

!

HOW THIS WORKS - SUBMITTING Once your submission is ready, sent it to us via email, or directly to your corresponding editor. Make sure your subject line is descriptive so we don’t miss it, and so we know it isn’t spam.

! !

Send it as a .doc, as well as any images you’d like to accompany you masterpiece (preferably high resolution) and you’re on your way.

FINAL WORD There we have it, capadre! You know everything there is to know about our fine little project, and we look forward to working with you soon!

SETTING UP THE DOCUMENT !

!

When setting up the InDesign document, you need to have a clear vision considering a variety of factors:"

! • • •

!

How much content you’ll have - pages can be added during construction but you’ll have to shuffle content and it is quite time-consuming, not to mention it may mess up your formatting. ! How you plan to structure the content! Whether you’ll keep the magazine online or you’d like to print it! ‣ If you’re printing via BUSA, keep in mind the resolution of your images won’t print crystal-clear but it is a cheaper option.! ‣ NB. This is very important. The page numbers need to be in multiples of 4. If you fail to do so, BUSA will cut pages from wherever they see fit or you’ll have blank white pages stapled at the end. !

Open InDesign and set up the magazine like so… !

! ! !

!

“Facing Pages” allows you to construct with double-page spreads. Make sure the orientation is selected as Portrait, as long as the A4 page size. This is crucial. The Bleed is important because when you print, the image should extend to the red line, or the bleed, so if the printer skews the page, the image won’t be cut. 3p0 is ample room, and if printing professionally it is important to ask the printer their print-ready requirements. !

!

The document is now ready to start work. Save this as a template so each issue is set up in the same, print-ready format and just adjust page numbers.

THE ADOBE SUITE!

!

InDesign is a really handy tool for producing ATLAS and I’d recommend investing in a 12-month student subscription so your images stay together. !

!

Placing files! When embedding an image or file, make sure it is downloaded or the link will be “missing” and export to PDF will mess up the resolution or disappear altogether. I’d recommend keeping everything for each issue in a separate folder. You can place any kind of file but make sure it is the original and on your HD. !

!

Packaging the document! When you are finished the art, make sure to package the document via File -> Package. It will export and save all the links in a folder. Then compress the folder and email to the BUSA Publications Director at publications.busa@bond.edu.au. Alternatively, save a copy as a PDF and email. Make sure you save ALL THE WAY THROUGH because InDesign’s recovery function is a little hit and miss. !

! IMAGE SOURCING! !

Just a note on sourcing: we’re technically bound by the same IP laws as actual magazines so we technically need to credit the photography that we source. It is best to filter google and Flickr searches by Creative Commons licenses and make sure all images are high resolution (> 2MP depending on the canvas size). !

!

NEED SOME INSPIRATION?! Sometimes it can be difficult to keep the aesthetic in line with whatever is already established. ! Sometimes it’s a case of finding an image that inspires you and the feature will follow, or you’ve got a title you’ve been dying to explore. Just write it - write something. !

!

Here are some of my favourite sources of inspiration;! Kinfolk! Cereal Magazine! The Denizen! Lifestyles of the Unemployed! http://hawaiiancoconut.tumblr.com (Creator of Wildfox) ! Russh Magazine ! Fete Press! Elephant Magazine! behance.net!

!

I also got a lot of my inspiration from packaging - the colours, typography & textures holds a very specific aesthetic and mood. If you can find a picture or even the physical packaging itself, reimagine it for a layout spread. !

!

If you can’t find anything there, browse some Pinterest boards of these sources. Feel free to also browse mine (http://www.pinterest.com/unadornd/) or my tumblr (http://unadornd.tumblr.com) that’s usually where I find the inspiration for the aesthetic. Click through some images you like to find the sources, chances are most of them are photographers themselves and their flickr pages hold a wealth of image inspo.

PRINTING! BUSA can print 50 copies, but because Aasha has a soft spot for ATLAS, she’ll print as many as you ask for. Gauge the demand per the Isssu & Facebook circulation, anywhere between 25-75 copies should satisfy. !

! !

ISSUU! Issuu kind of rocks for checking analytics and uploading digital files. If you don’t know what it is, you upload a PDF and it arranges it in magazine format and it’s just all-round sick. ! http://issuu.com/bondsdsa/docs !

!

email: publications@sdsa.bond.edu.au (please note this is not a legitimate email, i’d recommend changing it as soon as you log in)! password: bondsdsa!

!

You can access all the circulation statistics and analytics here: http://issuu.com/home/statistics

This is a really important feature to see what the readers like and don’t like, and it is a really good gauge of success. I’d aim for about 1,200 impressions on average. !
