However, one of the homes featured in this issue, The Boggs home in Gaffney, has such a lovely garden that I must beg your indulgence to allow us to stretch the season just a little. Along with it we’re featuring a fabulous Cliffs home in which the owners, The Bushers, have so much fun cooking and entertaining their guests that they have not one but TWO kitchens. Each is beautifully decorated and uniquely inviting.

As per tradition, we couldn’t do a fall/winter issue without including a home that has been fully decorated for the holiday season. The Hardys in Anderson have a great background story with their home in addition to the beautiful trees, garland and holiday style.

We are introducing a new feature that we’re calling Green AT HOME. It will highlight the latest trends in home design that incorporate environmentally sound and sustainable elements.

I thank all of our homeowners for their hospitality and generous nature that allowed us to visit their lovely homes.

Cliffs community is about 12 years old. George and Andrea purchased it two years ago, with a vision for what they wanted it to be.

The outside’s woodwork, now stained dark, was an orangey cedar color. The flagstone on the porch was added to the front stairs and onto the walkway. The landscaping was redone

by Woodland Design in Hendersonville.

George and Andrea Busher had not planned on buying a home in the Upstate so soon, with his retirement from commercial real estate investment and hers from a teaching career still a few years away.

When driving through a Cliffs community, however, they were instantly drawn to a particular house. They knew their French antique porcelain, inherited from George’s grandmother, would fit beautifully. So even though originally looking for lots, not homes, they signed a contract that weekend.

Growing up in Miami, George and his sisters would spend summers at Our Lady of the Hills Camp near Hendersonville. He returned for years as a camper and then a camp counselor. Andrea, a city girl from Miami, preferred vacationing in places like New York City. When George eventually brought her here to reminisce about his childhood, they stayed in Highland Lake Inn where his old camp used to be. Andrea fell in love with the Carolinas.

day’s drive from Miami, Andrea said it feels worlds apart. The slower pace and vastly different scenery, from the palm trees and busy beaches to the serene mountainscape and lakes, were attractive selling points.

The availability of six golf courses and two more to come, located in the eight Cliffs communities, finalized their decision. George and Andrea are relatively new players, both just starting and taking lessons within the past five years, but golf has quickly become their favorite pastime.

“Sometimes it’s more like landscape work when we play,” she said. “But even though we’re not great, the scenery makes up for it.”

When they walked through the front door, George and Andrea saw something very different on the inside than what the house was saying on the outside. The exterior said French country chateau and she wanted to bring that look indoors. They had found the house; now they had to find someone who could make it a home.

Suzi Smith, owner of Design Partners Inc., has a design center in the Cliffs and they stopped by to talk about the possibility of working together. When George and Andrea visited Suzi’s home, they knew they had found their designer. Andrea had a clear vision of what she wanted, down to a picture of a Victorian room she had cut from a magazine. George’s mother had given them a pink chandelier and lamps.

Along with these gifts, Andrea wanted the look from the photograph included in one of the bedrooms, knowing both of their mothers would love it. She said the beauty of hiring an interior designer is they are an artist, using furniture and design as their medium.

“I had the ideas but she brought them to life.

I took a backseat and let her work her magic,” Andrea said.

The spice colors chosen by Andrea complement the copper and pastel green Oriental rug from George’s grandmother. Suzi designed the living area around the rug, selecting elegantyet-comfortable fabric to cover the family’s sofas, a Baltic brown granite top for Andrea’s wooden table base, and antique pieces in the center of the room. An eight-foot mirror, from Red Baron’s Antiques in Atlanta, opposite the

stone fireplace and wood bookshelves balances the space.

Beyond the living room, three levels sprawl out on almost four acres.

The home has five bedrooms, four full baths, two powder rooms and two kitchens. Fleming Builders in Taylors installed faux wooden beams that look like hand-hewn darkstained poplar on most ceilings. The crew completed the home theater designed by Suzi that includes a 108-inch screen and cushy leather seats for eight. The room features visual and sound components from Fusion Systems in Greenville. Suzi

will add an antique candy counter and popcorn machine. Kessick, also in Greenville, constructed wooden racks for bottles seen through the wine cellar’s glass door. With the finishing touches on that room and the new downstairs kitchen, George and Andrea have the perfect spot to entertain and cook.

While Suzi worked on the house for eight months, touching every piece of molding, floor and furnishings, George and Andrea stayed in Miami through the spring and early summer until the photos � 24� story � 28 � completion date.

In the dining room is a French antique double-pedestal inlayed wood top table, six-and-ahalf feet long and all one piece, and a custom-made china hutch. George and Andrea’s sconces, also antiques, are on either side of the window. Suzi found a coordinating chandelier for over the table.

Andrea said she had never used a designer before and she hoped the décor would be a reflection of them and not just a place someone else had decorated. My Favorite Seafood Recipe

Roasted Mussels with Coconut Curry Sauce 12-14 mussels per person (as an appetizer) 2 ounces oil 2 ounces butter 2 minced shallots 1 clove garlic 1 ounce curry powder 6 ounces coconut milk 2 limes, juiced cilantro, to taste Melt butter and add shallots and garlic. Cook on low heat until translucent. Add curry powder and cook on low for 1 minute. Add coconut milk and cook on low for 5 minutes.

In a saute pan, heat 2 ounces of oil and add mussels when oil is hot.

Don’t drop them in; place gently in the pan so as not to splash oil.

When the mussels start to open, reduce heat to low and add sauce, lime juice and cilantro to taste.

Garnish with your favorite grilled bread for sopping up the sauce.

For the past nine months, Chef Steve Leitch has enjoyed not only feeding his guests at Brasserie Ecosse in Spartanburg, but also entertaining them.

“We want our guests to have a great experience through food, beverage, service, music and art,” says Leitch, who grew up in Scotland and came to South Carolina to swim at Clemson University. After returning to Scotland to earn a culinary degree and completing several high-caliber apprenticeships, he moved back to South Carolina, working at some of the state’s top restaurants, including La Bastide at The Cliffs and Restaurant O. Just as wine enthusiasts run the gamut from casual collector to obsessed oenophile, wine storage can be found in every size and configuration and at every price point. But three keys to successful storage maximize flavor for all who buy bottles: consistency of temperature, darkness and lack of movement.

The ideal temperature for wine storage is between 55 and 60 degrees, says Robert Bass, owner of Greenville-based Kessick LLC, which designs and installs custom wine ďż˝ 44 ďż˝ storage.

Customers who enjoy the occasional glass of wine sometimes turn into enthusiasts with massive collections and increasing storage needs.

His custom-built units, which can take on a variety of configurations, are typically made from mahogany, which resists mildew and moisture – a must in an environment with elevated humidity. While a full wine cellar requires a larger space, he has created many in closets or in the unused space underneath staircases. “We can add proper insulation, a cooling unit, lighting, doors and wall materials,� he says. “It can be as simple or as involved as someone wants it to be.�

In response to growing demand, Bass is currently building a wine cellar that could be considered a boarding facility for collectors’ favorite vintages. He’ll have 40 lockers that customers can rent to expand their storage space or to use while storage is being built.

Each will have climate control, a security system and even a backup generator to ensure proper storage in any condition.

Many customers are seeking the aesthetic flourishes that add function and style to the area. “Entertainment is what it’s all about,�

Bass says. “A wine cellar adds an element of entertainment for guests, and most people do like to show off their storage space.�

He says similar services are springing up in other areas, and he expects local wine aficionados to jump at the chance to use it. “They are looking for an excuse to buy more wine,â€? he says. “This gives them one.â€? ď‚™

Many also like arched niches and a display row, which allows collectors to show off their favorite bottles. Kessick also sells tasting tables crafted from reclaimed wine barrels, some of which still show the purple evidence of their former role.

Williams says wine collecting is growing in popularity, and the Upstate is no exception.

When YOU dO interiOr design as a prOfessiOn, it is Often difficUlt tO pick One Object that WOUld be cOnsidered a favOrite. i picked an italian bracket i found in a soho antique store while doing interior design in new York city. i decided to hang it over my desk and use it to display a collection of russian porcelain that has a different italian landscape scene painted on each piece. i thought it rather interesting to place the porcelain on a bracket that would have originally held large candles. it’s the one grouping of objects of which i have never grown tired. although my italian bracket came from new York, historically englishmen and americans alike would embark on the grand tour which would eventually land them in italy. turin, Milan, padua, rome and naples were must-see stops. the journey presented the opportunity to buy objects otherwise unavailable at home. individuals on a grand tour would return with art, sculpture, paintings and other objects of interest that would be infused into their homes as reminders of the journey. Mass transit made the tour more accessible to everyone by the end of the first quarter of the 19th century and as time passed the ability to acquire objects from the continent became less of an adventure.

Upon returning home to south carolina, the crate of souvenirs that i had purchased in new York was unpacked. an extended professional stay in the city provided me the opportunity to collect a few objects that reminded me of the idea of the grand tour. the idea they conjure in my mind is enough for me, at least for the time being.



At that time, the house was a dark burgundy color and topped with an orange tile roof. Even though she thought the house had a “haunted” look to it, Paula also saw potential in the majestic brick abode – and a chance to make it a home of their own.

Shortly afterward, the Boggs moved from Washington, D.C., to Gaffney. Steve, an anesthesiologist and partner with Foothills Anesthesia Consultants, began to build his practice. Paula started to decorate and renovate, which included adding the wrought iron fence to frame the home.

“It’s like having people with you throughout the house,” Paula said.

Even with such a diverse, exotic blend, the figurines and sculptures all quietly coexist on shelves in the sitting room, the library or in Steve’s office, where sounds of Spanish staccato rhythms originate.

A New Mexico native fluent in English, French and Spanish, Steve shares tri-linguistic abilities with Carter and Cecily, who both speak English, French and German.

Though the house represents the life they’ve enjoyed thus far, part of owning an established home is telling stories they’ve learned over the years about the original owners, including the fun-loving “ice-skating chronicle.”

Many winters ago, a pipe leak sent water cascading over the first floor. Since the family was on vacation, the water froze and remained until they returned. Upon arrival, the children saw their very own indoor ice-skating rink – and the perfect opportunity to host a one-of-a-kind party.

While preparing to paint the master bedroom, Paula pulled the bed out from the corner.

After painting, she discovered she liked the new layout and left the bed positioned at an angle.

As Paula reflects on their life in Gaffney for the past two decades, she is eager to share her home with others. She also acknowledges the close-knit community has played a part in how much they enjoy their home.

“There is a sweetness to living here,” said Paula. “It colors your day when you know your neighbors and the people around you.”



1 Tablespoon star anise 3 teaspoons whole cloves 3 teaspoons fennel seeds 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon 3 teaspoons Black Peppercorns 4 6-ounces Tuna steaks, ahi (yellow fin) is best Canola oil

6 Tablespoons sweet chile sauce * 1 Tablespoon sambal oelek * 1 Tablespoon fresh lime juice

Yield: 4 portions

CARROT COULIS:

Grind all spices but cinnamon in coffee grinder to fine consistency, then blend in cinnamon.

1 pound peeled carrots ¼ cup orange juice and ZEST of 1/2 oraNGE

Season tuna on all sides with salt and black pepper. Evenly dust the tuna with the spice mixture.

Yield: 1/2 cup

Heat the oil over high heat just until pan starts to smoke a little.

Carefully add the tuna steaks, making sure they are not touching, and sear for 20 seconds per side for medium rare being careful not to burn the spices.

Remove to a cutting board and immediately slice each into ¼” slices with a very sharp knife.

Yield: 1/4 cup Puree all in blender until very smooth.

Dice carrots and add to saucepot. Cover with the orange juice.

Add zest of 1/2 orange and bring to a simmer. Simmer until carrots are cooked through. Puree in blender until very smooth.

Season with salt.

VERMICELLI-PEANUT SALAD: 8 ounces vermicelli noodles *

SAKE PICKLED CABBAGE: 1/2 medium head red cabbage, sliced 1/8” thick 1/2 medium head green cabbage, sliced 1/8” thick 1 red onion, shaved 1 Tablespoon srirachi chile sauce* 2 garlic cloves, sliced thin 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar 2 Tablespoons white vinegar 1/4 cup sake 1/2 cup water Yield: 1 quart Heat sugar, vinegars, sake, and water to boiling. Quickly pour over other ingredients and cover tightly with plastic wrap. Let cool at room temperature. Use immediately or better if left to refrigerate overnight. Use clean utensils only to avoid contamination.

Before there were banks with savings accounts, silver was fashioned into useful objects and one’s wealth was known by the silver in the cupboard. Craftsmanship aside, the silver could be melted into coins if the family fell on hard times. today’s collector, while mindful of the intrinsic value of the metal, focuses on the decorative beauty of silver objects and the skill with photos � 82� story � 83� which they are crafted.

An interest in silver often begins with sterling silver flatware.

There are many patterns on the market that have been available for 100 years or more. Kirk’s Repousse, introduced in 1828, is one of the earliest patterns made continuously since its inception (photo A). Gorham’s Chantilly, introduced in 1895, Strasbourg (1897), Buttercup (1899) and Fairfax (1910) are still popular. Reed and Barton’s Francis I (1906) and Marlborough (1906) have also weathered the test of time.

These patterns, along with others made in the early 20th century, have an astonishing number of serving pieces and place setting items. For example in Strasbourg (photo B), Gorham offered 41 different types of spoons including bonbon, bouillon, chocolate, confection, cracker, egg, citrus, honey, ice cream, iced tea, mustard, nut, olive, salt, sorbet and sugar. There were 37 forks, including serving and place forks, 42 knives, and 35 additional serving pieces for a total of 145 different flatware items made in this one pattern.

Not all of these are still made today, so collectors enjoy searching for unusual pieces in antique shops and other shops that carry estate silver. Some collectors even choose beautiful old patterns that were so popular in their day that pieces are easily found on the secondary market now, even though the pattern is not currently made. The two English cream pitchers (photo D) also illustrate the rapid change of style in 18th century London. The one on the left was made in 1744 and is an exuberant Baroque example. It features elaborate chasing (punching out the silver to make a three-dimensional design) with asymmetrical cartouches containing naturalistic scenes: a heron drinking water in one, a deer in another, and a flying bird as part of a cartouche for the original owner’s initials. It also features three detailed shells which, in turn, become three webbed feet.

from chasing, but from bright cutting, the etching of design into the silver â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a leafy swag and a symmetrical cartouche for initials. This example is called a helmet shaped pitcher. Imagine it upside down on a Roman soldier. Eighteenth century silver was hand-made and the inside of this pitcher shows the hand hammering that was used to shape sterling articles.

In its pure state, silver is an extremely soft metal. Even when used for coins, another metal, called alloy, must be melted with it. For coins of the same size to have the same value, they must have the same silver content. Since Saxon times in England, coins have been set at 92.5 percent pure silver and 7.5 percent copper. In 1238 the English set this standard for all objects made of silver. Thus, when melted into coins, English sterling will have the correct amount of silver to be used as currency.

To enforce the standard, a system of markings called hallmarks (photo E) was introduced. Collectors today benefit from the legacy of silver documentation that has evolved for centuries. Although daunting at first, English hallmarks now enable a collector of English silver to know not only that the object is 92.5 percent pure silver, but the year an object was made, the craftsman who made it, and even the town in which it was made.

The sterling standard was adopted in the United States shortly after the Civil War. Since about 1860 items with 92.5 percent

silver are marked “Sterling.” Many countries, like Mexico, simply mark “925” somewhere on the item; this marking universally means sterling silver. A number of European countries have two standards.

Objects with nine parts silver and one part alloy are marked “900.”

Objects with eight parts silver and two parts alloy are marked “800.”

Both are called continental sterling.

The first hallmark, “SA” is the maker’s initials.

The second, the lion passant, indicates sterling.

The third, the leopard, is the hallmark for London.

The lower cased “r” is the date mark for 1792.

The fifth hallmark is the monarch’s head indicating that the proper duty was paid.

Collectors of old American silver frequently hear the term “coin silver.” This is silver made from American coins, which could vary somewhat in amount of silver before the United States adopted the English sterling standard. Coin silver is usually at least 90 percent silver. It is sometimes marked “coin,” and frequently has the name or initials of the maker also inscribed into the silver. Coin silver and sterling silver, both the English and continental standard, are considered solid silver because the entire piece has the same amount of silver throughout. The value of the piece can simply be its weight in silver, but collectors prize its history, workmanship and beauty above its value in pure silver.

“Silverplate” refers to an object that is primarily made of another metal with a layer of silver on visible surfaces. The earliest commercially successful type of silver plate is old Sheffield plate which was made by fusing thin sheets of sterling silver on both sides of a sheet of copper. This sandwich of silver and copper was then fashioned into beautiful wares that sold for a fraction of the price of their solid silver counterparts. This was a labor-intensive process because the copper layer could not show or it would be obvious the item was not solid silver. Thus any exposed copper must be covered with the roll of sterling. Today, old Sheffield plate in good condition can sell for as much as its sterling counterpart. Collectors admire the workmanship and also like knowing that

it was produced in a defined time period: from 1742 when the process was introduced, to 1845 when it was supplanted by electroplating, a less labor-intensive process that could produce wares at a much lower cost. Electroplating is a process that covers an object made of copper, nickel or another base metal with a thin veneer of pure silver.

Most homes in Cliffs communities elicit impressed nods, admiring gazes and maybe even a little envy, but step into the Showcase Green Home at the Cliffs at Mountain Park and you’ll know something is different.

The lovely architecture, scenic views and spacious rooms are all there, but this one’s notable for what’s missing: synthetics, chemicals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other environmental hazards. From the materials and finishes to furnishings and accent pieces, everything was painstakingly selected for its sustainability, durability, and how it was manufactured. The result is a classic example of how an eye for green design can yield beautiful, luxurious living spaces. � 96 �

Adrienne Fulmer and Moe Draz headed up the interior design by Postcard from Paris, working closely with architect Scott Johnston of Johnston Design Group and builders Covington/Tutman. Fulmer says many clients are looking for green design, though they have a variety of reasons.

“It depends on what your goal is,” she says. “Some clients have allergies and want indoor air quality to be their main focus – no-VOC paints, waterbased stains, natural fibers. Some want to save money, so they want Energy Star appliances and lighting. And some people are simply concerned about the environment – reducing their carbon footprint and living responsibly.”

The Showcase Green Home was designed to suit all of those needs.

Reclaimed heart pine was used throughout the three-level structure, with a water-based stain that doesn’t off-gas like traditional paints and stains.

Adding softness and texture are rugs made of 100 percent natural fibers such as wool, seagrass and sisal.

Lighting was selected to accommodate the spiral compact fluorescent bulbs, which last longer and use less energy than traditional bulbs. When the home was designed last year, CFLs only came in the spiral design, but they are now available in traditional bulb shapes.

“Lighting is getting so much better,” Fulmer says. CFLs give a dimmer light than incandescent, but new types of lights like LEDs and cold cathodes provide a warmer light that still reduces energy consumption.

“Everything is from companies that are making a change,” Draz says. “It’s really difficult to find furniture that is 100 percent green, and it’s cost-prohibitive, too.”

In the laundry room, an energy drain in many homes, the Postcard from Paris team used a Richlite countertop made from recycled compressed paper that is surprisingly durable.

The Crossville Ecocycle tile boasts 40 percent recycled content, and while cabinetry is often

laminated using formaldehyde, here they are formaldehyde-free with doors made of MDF, a composite wood material. Paint throughout the home is Sherwin-Williams Harmony, which has no volatile organic compounds.

Clean living continues in the kitchen, where the countertops are made of concrete produced locally to reduce shipping. Draz likes the versatility of concrete, which comes in a variety of colors and thicknesses. The Energy Star appliances and recycled bronze pulls by Rocky Mountain Hardware continue the theme, while antique accessories add a stylishly green touch. � 100 �

“The greenest furniture is antique furniture,” Draz says, “since you are reusing something that is old.”

The airy eating area is dominated by a table made by local artisan Trey Sherman, and is a great place to take in the verdant scenery of Mountain Park.

Architect Scott Johnston designed phantom screens that maximize the cross-breeze and the view: at the touch of a button, two walls ascend like garage doors, offering the experience of the great outdoors without the heat and bugs. Thanks to outdoor overhangs, the phantom screens can be used even on rainy days.

In the more formal dining area, which is open to the living room and kitchen, the dining table is from el: Environmental Language, crafted with walnut responsibly harvested from certified forests.

Inside the master suite, bedding of allnatural materials, including silk, tops a Park Place Eco Therapy mattress made of bamboo and lycocell, a green material. The master bath centers around a 100 percent recycled glass backsplash and granite countertops, which will last for decades.

“Quality and permanence is a big part of being green,” Draz says.

The game room upstairs is a fun place to relax, with nesting tables of reclaimed wood and iron, cotton velvet and silk pillows, and seagreass chairs. Accessories such as vases and a chess set are from 10,000 Villages, which focuses on fair trade items from artisans in Third World villages.

Head down to the lower level and you find the rec room, featuring unique cork flooring that is not just environmentally sound but is forgiving to the feet and easy to maintain. A reclaimed wood and iron table is flanked by Century chairs made of water hyacinth, topped with cotton corduroy fabric.

The first of two bedrooms on the lower level continues the melding of plush with green, offering wool wall-to-wall carpet, Designtex window treatments and Century chairs with Q Collection fabric, which Draz prizes for its natural dyes and beautiful patterns and colors.

In the second lower-level bedroom, furniture from Vivaterra includes a reclaimed wood bed with classic French lines that is “contemporary, traditional and green,” Draz says – an eclectic mix that sums up the personality of the entire home.

By combining light and dark, new and old, and contemporary with traditional, the team was able to create a space that feels clean and Zen but still homey and comfortable.

“It’s all about balance. We were playing on that yin/yang theme, because the home offers balance on so many levels, including the balance between design and the environment,” Draz says.

toni and darrell hardy had been planning their dream house for years. after designing the layout of the main floor and lower level on her own, toni went with her ideas to tim striCkland who “took her good plan and made it great.”

They secured Carl E. Cheek as their builder and were ready to begin what was to be a 13-month project.

Right from the start, Toni knew that the house would have everything needed for entertaining family and friends. And because one of her favorite times of the year is the Christmas season, she even preplanned where she would put her decorated trees so that electrical outlets could be well positioned.

Plus, she created a storage room on the main level of the home that allows

her to store her fully decorated trees year-round until they are needed for display and enjoyment. Most trees sit on a wheeled platform (of Darrell’s design) and can be rolled into storage with ease.

With the help of Linda Jenkins of Gallery Interiors, Rogers Furniture and Vintage Place, Toni and Darrell have been able to make their dreams come true.

The results of all the hard work done in advance are fully evident. Enjoy your visit with them.

The entry foyer – with its gleaming hardwood floors, cream and gold wallpaper, and dark wood furnishings – is a perfect backdrop for Toni Hardy’s gold and white holiday décor.

porch. After some thought the decision was made to enclose it and now it is useful throughout the year. Since it was already in place, the outdoor grill received an exhaust hood and it too gets frequent use.

ABOVE: Nestled in a corner near the entrance to the master bedroom suite, this tree was decorated by wrapping several lengths of garland from top to bottom. Toni added lights, color-coordinated glass balls and spiky gold filaments at the top and voila ... a beautiful addition to her collection.

CENTER: On the upstairs landing, near the guest bedrooms, is a special tree that is decorated with ornaments given to the Hardys throughout the year by friends. Each has a story and a place in the hearts of its owners.
