I love food.

The things I enjoy most often include food, drink, friends, and family.

Family recipes, ones shared among friends, meeting friends for a meal. Anniversaries, birthdays, Friday nights. It seems all things, from everyday moments to special occasions, become just a little more enjoyable with the right food and drink.

This year, with the new economic realities, we are all spending a little less. However, when you do spend, you should recognize that your local spending has a huge impact. Your patronage of Upstate businesses helps ensure local jobs and provides tax revenue that supports schools – our future. Local restaurants are a vital part of our community. Typically, every dollar spent in restaurants generates $2 in sales for other industries, according to the U.S Department of Commerce.

“I want to give guests the opportunity to try vegetables like they’ve never tasted them, or they’ll say, ‘Wow, I haven’t tasted anything like this since my grandmother’s garden,’” he says.

Tom Trantham, owner of Happy Cow Creamery, points out that items in a grocery store have traveled 1,500 miles on average, and many foods, including corn, begin losing flavor and nutrition the moment they are picked.

“The closer to you, the better the food,” he says.

While taste offers an immediate benefit, reduced environmental impact is a less obvious result of buying local. Garcia takes pride in slashing his carbon footprint by reducing shipping, a major cause of pollution.

Farmers often become stewards of the environment in other ways, as well.

Allison Schaum, who manages the farm store at Live Oak Farms in Woodruff, says her staff avoids herbicides and pesticides, and takes care of the creek that runs through their property. Solar panels help power the store and fencing, and the staff is always looking for ways to make the farm as green as possible.

There’s a sense of responsibility farms take in the communities they serve. “The local food movement isn’t

nameless—people can put a face to the food. It’s more connected,” Schaum says. Live Oak specializes in beef, chicken, lamb, turkey and eggs, and is certified naturally grown, with no hormones or antibiotics.

Samuel Staggs, owner of The Tomato Vine in Greenville, says it pays to know the origin of your food—who grew it, where and when. “Local is better because I’m looking at the crop, it doesn’t have to be on a truck, and less transportation means lower costs,” he says. “And we grow for taste rather than size.” In addition to tomatoes, he grows beans, squash, cucumbers, okra, corn and more, and works with farmers statewide to provide the best products. continued on 33

Though Live Oak Farm has been operating for more than five years, the farm store opened in July and offers fresh Charleston seafood, kettle-cooked potato chips, Happy Cow milk, grass-fed beef, heritage turkeys, grits, raw sugar and Leopard Forest Coffee, to name just a few.

“People have been coming from the surrounding community, and they like that it’s one-stop,” she says.

Happy Cow products are sold in farm stores like Live Oak and are big sellers at Whole Foods, Trantham says, but many people like to come to his farm in Pelzer to buy the products, continued on 35

“People are learning that the stuff in the grocery store could be coming from anywhere, and there’s not that special interest,” he adds. “With people like me, our local farmer, food safety is a big issue. We have to make sure everything is good and everything is right.”

Garcia agrees, pointing out that every few years a massive recall will spur people to look at the origins of their food, and he sees a growing trend toward people wanting to know more about what they are putting in their bodies. “Back in the 80s, everything was low-fat, but the newer trend is people wanting to know how food was handled and make choices based on that,” he says.

The move toward local produce has been boosted even further by documentaries such as Food Inc. that encourage people to examine their food more closely. “God love Oprah,” says Schaum, referring to an episode that discussed the documentary and the local food movement. “We’re totally thankful to her for spreading the word, because it increases interest in what

“The dollars go to someone around here, and then they might end up coming here for dinner,” he says.

“It’s a circle. If you buy from the big ones, you never know where your dollars will end up.”

Staggs suggests that those interested in local food research local farms and farm stores, citing the Clemson Extension Service or the S.C. Department of Agriculture as good places to start. Buyers can also look at stores or roadside stands for a “Certified South Carolina” sticker, which began a few years ago as a way to draw attention to local products.

“People will find there are so many diverse, unique farms in the Upstate,” Schaum says. “It’s so wonderful that people are looking closer to home and paying attention to where they spend their dollars, supporting farms like ours.” •

“When you support the community where you live, we all prosper and we all do well,” he says. One dollar spent on a South Carolina farm generates $7 in return for the community, Trantham says, improving the area economy.

Buying wine should be easy and entertaining by richard debondt Years ago I encountered a particularly distressing industry study of wine buying habits of American consumers. The number one influence on most purchases was the position of the product in the store. This was followed closely by packaging, media advertising and special inducements such as coupons, discounts and tie-ins. Cost was not

in the top five influences. However, the truly distressing thing is that the taste of the wine was not significant to its sale.

Further, there was no evidence that the authenticity of the wine had any relevance to its success.

Buying should be easy and entertaining. The quality and variety of available wine have never been better.

The instances of bad wine or wine in bad condition have never been more rare. However, there is a truly endless supply of different wines and this is a bit frightening to many people.

So much is said and written about wine today that we forget that it is simple and accessible.

No one need stand on the sidelines intimidated by the mystique of wine or the constant blather of the wine press. Just remember, no one knows what’s “best” and no one has tried them all … not by a long shot!

Anyone can choose wine, and anyone can enjoy its variety and complexity. Just relax and wade in, but keep up with where you have been. Pay attention to the geographic source of each wine. Most wines of interest, with individual character and good quality, will be very informative about their origin.

Also note the producer. The most important facts about any wine are who made it and where.

Be a bit leery of wines that are vague about their producer or their place of origin. A nearly anonymous trademark with pretty pictures and vague origins is rarely a great find. It may even be a failed product repackaged.

Worry a bit less about vintages.

Although we hear a great deal about great years, and they do make a difference, the producer and place are most telling as to the style and quality of a wine.

Remember where you have been.

Take note of each wine you drink and what its attributes are. Use your own judgment and your own vocabulary (never take the word of a magazine).

Your memory for what you have enjoyed can lead you to successful (low risk) experimentation. Be a bit open minded about what you try. Never write off a whole region or category based on limited trial. However, do note carefully what you find unpleasant. continued on 59

Eating well in the Upstate

ne thing is for sure.

The Upstate has an array of amazing restaurants. It’s been said more than once: if you figure the number of people who live here and compare that to the number of eating establishments, the Upstate has more places to eat out per capita than any other area in the country.

And there’s lots to do and see nearby before and after dining.

Downtown Greenville

Back in the 1970s, downtown Greenville was little more than a handful of locally owned restaurants catering to downtown workers. The four-lane, almost treeless Main Street closed up at night. Buildings that had long held major department stores stood empty after the stores moved to area malls.

Fast-forward 40 years and a twolane, almost forested Main Street has become a vibrant place of pedestrians

at most any hour of the day venturing into retailers that do brisk business.

One-third of all the office space in the Greenville and Spartanburg metropolitan area is in downtown Greenville. Every week from April through September, free outdoor concerts take place downtown— everything from folk to jazz.

Downtown is also the location of Heritage Green, which includes the Upcountry History Museum, the Greenville County Museum of Art, a satellite gallery of the Bob Jones University Museum of Sacred Art, the Greenville Little Theatre and the Greenville County Library.

On South Main is the Peace Center for the Performing Arts and nearby on Richardson is CentreStage Theatre.

The BI-LO Center is located on North Academy.

The West End, which some consider an extension of downtown, has become a center for dining and entertainment, largely due to the creation of Falls Park on the Reedy at a cost of $13.2 million, paid for with money from the city’s hospitality tax.

The focal point of the park is the $4.5 million Liberty Bridge, a pedestrian bridge that’s 355 feet long, 12 feet wide over the river designed by architect Miguel Rosales of Boston.

Bryan Hunt designed the sculpture at the Main Street entrance.

Fluor Field at the West End is home to the Greenville Drive, a minor league team affiliated with the Boston Red Sox. The field includes a replica of Fenway Park’s Green Monster and offers a stunning view of the downtown skyline.

Retailers are beginning to fill

the historic buildings in the area. A longtime fixture is the Greenville Army Store, loaded with any and all military surplus and products used by police, SWAT, fire, EMS and rescue workers.

The South Carolina Children’s Theatre office is located in the area but performances are held at Gunter Theatre at the Peace Center.

Greer

City leaders have worked hard to revitalize downtown Greer and have seen the tide turn. The 12 square blocks of downtown, also known as Greer Station, include more than 40 buildings on the National Historic Register.

The buildings house retail, dining, entertainment and professional offices. City government has new offices a few blocks from its longtime home at the corner of Poinsett and Main streets. Next door is City Park, with walking trails, a children’s playground, a picnic shelter, a pond, gardens, tree-lined promenades, open lawn areas and an amphitheater.

Greer is also home, of sorts, to the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport.

Spartanburg

Spartanburg is home to more colleges than any city of its size in the state: Converse College, Wofford College, University of South Carolina Upstate, Spartanburg Community College and Spartanburg Methodist, and Sherman College of Chiropractic.

They bring to the city a rich patina of forums, performing and visual arts and speakers.

The city has embarked on a program to involve all residents in becoming more creative and the arts have become a major focus.

The $48 million Chapman Cultural Center provides a home to performing and visual arts, dance companies and a 500-seat proscenium theater.

Across town is the headquarters for Hub City Writers Project, which was started in the 1990s to encourage people to write about Spartanburg and their connection to the area. It has since published 42 books and sponsors writing workshops and readings as well as musical events in its Showroom.

Home to Anderson University, Anderson has been in the throes of revitalizing downtown ever since the county government built its new office complex on Main Street in 1991.

The Anderson County Arts Center includes exhibits of work by artists both local and national. The arts center also sponsors an annual juried show, which draws work from artists from all over the southeast.

The city also benefits from its proximity to Hartwell Lake built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1963. It has nearly 56,000 acres of water and a shoreline of 962 miles and draws millions of visitors every year.
