Humpback whales travel from the northern seas of Russia and Alaska (5,600 miles) to give birth to their calves in the warm waters surrounding Okinawa and the Kerama Islands. Many grow up to be 50’ long and weigh up to 30 tons. We’ll take you out to sea to get close to these gentle giants. Ages 3 & under are not allowed on the boat due to safety precautions.

One of the many major attractions this winter is the Ryukyu Lantern Festival.
February in Okinawa means an abundance of fun outdoor and indoor adventures to undertake. Instead of snowfall, this majestic island embraces the cool breeze by illuminating the night sky with colorful glowing Chinese lanterns. Illuminations are offered throughout the island, but one of the wellregarded in people’s list this time of year is the Ryukyu Lantern Festival. Located in Murasaki Mura Ryukyu Kingdom Theme Park, the festival features 3,000 luminous lanterns that create a whimsical ambience for visitors to enjoy and capture. It is like walking through a magical pathway that leads to a world full of warm shining lanterns.
This is the eighth year Okinawa is headlining the Ryukyu Lantern Festival at a historic location that derived from the Ryukyu Dynasty period. The history of the Ryukyu Kingdom is something Okinawans are prideful of, and what more to celebrate their yesteryears than to offer a fun way to enjoy the cool winter with warm lit lanterns. It offers an entertaining atmosphere while literally walking through history. The best way to learn, in my opinion.
The festival not only features the typical shaped lanterns, but locals also craft their own. Some build uniquely shaped ones like animals, their favorite characters, and more. These handmade lanterns are displayed in a special area in the park for people to view and vote for. A winner is then picked where he/she is rewarded a Gold “Grand” Prize and gains the title of the year’s Lantern Object Contest Winner. Festivities also include several live performances on a radiant stage and food vendors who serve delicacies such as Okinawan soba, chicken skewers, and more. It doesn’t stop there! You can even try your hands at creating your own lantern with their washipaper, a traditional Japanese paper.
I personally checked the Ryukyu Lantern Festival off of my list this year! I was excited to see the lanterns in person and experience the atmosphere everyone is fussing about. And boy, were they right! Amazing can’t even begin to describe how magical it was. The park was easy to find and parking was available right across the street where you’ll go through an indoor souvenir shop and right out the ticketing office and entrance. With tickets in my hands I purchased from ITT, I was able to skip the line and go right inside.
As the moon kindles the night, the lanterns slowly filled the park with bright, warm, and red lanterns creating a fascinating scene. The lanterns left me speechless and in awe; my jaw literally dropped, and I couldn’t stop smiling. I loved seeing the decorations that filled the park in every corner. I made sure to bring my camera and capture as many memories as I can with my family and friends. Having them there made the experience so much more fun and exciting.
If you want to see the lanterns before they take flight for the year, leave it to ITT to plan your excursion so you can enjoy your time, stress-free. Tour the park, vote for the best and unique handmade lanterns, chow down on local delicacies, and most of all, enjoy the lanterns and views with family and friends.
