Staying on Track in the New Year Written by • Elizabeth Bryan The moment I change my calendar from December to January, I get nervous. My New Year’s resolution has been exactly the same for as long as I can remember. Lose weight. So far, I have failed every year. I have struggled with my weight my whole life, and not in the “I need to lose 15 pounds to fit my summer clothes” kind of way. More of the “I need to be roughly half the size I currently am” kind of way. The start of a new year means a fresh slate. It is the opportunity to say goodbye to bevy of bad habits and hello to positive changes. That is so much easier said than done. I know I am not alone in failing at my resolutions. I hear people talk about giving up on resolutions often enough, once February and March come around. So when people DO succeed, how do they do it?
I think I have part of it figured out. One of the reasons New Year’s resolutions have always appealed to me is the feeling of starting fresh. If I start a diet on January 1st then, for as long as I can stick with it, I feel like I have been on a diet ‘all year’. By the same token, once I have ‘messed up’, whether I skipped a gym day or splurged on a dessert, the clean slate has been ruined. If I think of January 1st as the starting line and trip up in the first few weeks, it feels as though the whole race has been lost. It feels as though I have to wait until the next year to try again. That feeling is an immediate set up for failure. No one can go a whole year without making a single mistake, and it is detrimental to even attempt to put that expectation on yourself. Yet I, and so many people, do it anyway. If I want to stick to my resolution this year, then my goal cannot be ‘new year, new me’ it has to be ‘new year, new expectations. There is no magical ‘new me’ I can find if I look hard enough. The person who has to do all of the work is the current me, and the current me has a lot of learning to do. So, my New Year’s resolution this year won’t be to lose weight. My resolution is to not give up. Even if I don’t lose weight. Whether I eat too many cheat meals or skip a workout, I will keep trying. Then, the only way to fail at my resolution is giving up. After years of diets, fad workouts, and doctor visits, it sometimes feels like no matter what I do, things won’t change. I think the only way to push past the feeling is to change the focus and be a little kinder to yourself. It takes time to build habits, and even people who have established routines for years occasionally fumble. I have heard the best way to make a goal is to start small, but usually I try to bite off more than I can chew anyway. This year, I will remind myself there is no shame in starting small and I am only failing when I stop trying. If things start to feel like too much, it is ok to scale back. It is ok to ask for help, whether it is from a friend or a professional trainer. It is ok to miss a workout day or eat something I shouldn’t, as long as I don’t use that as an excuse to mess up again tomorrow. For those of you who feel a bit like me and feel like failing your resolution is inevitable, I encourage you to change the direction of your goal. The ‘new you’ isn’t found at the beginning of the year, it is found at the end. Shaped by all of the choices you made for the previous 365 days.

Seaside
Dining in Luxury, Immersed in Paradise Just a Moment Away One of the hidden gems of Kadena Air Base is the Seaside restaurant. Recently renovated to offer a comfortable atmosphere and a delicious new menu, the old Ristorante is GONE! Seaside reels in customers with its scenic views. Peace and serenity abounds when you step onto Seaside’s patio. Visiting at sunset allows you to enjoy the radiant oranges, pinks, and purples gracefully receding behind the glistening waters. It truly is one of the best locations to take in the full Okinawan mindset. The outdoor terrace allows customers to sit right at the water’s edge and watch the fish swim by while they dine. Inside are large glass windows that allow for beautiful panoramic scenes no matter where you sit. Even on stormy days, seeing the waves crash against the breaks is an elegant sight to behold. The new menu was put together by the famous Chef Gilbert who gave it a simplified, but grand, revamp. No longer focused on Italian fare, we now offer a surf & turf themed menu with pleasing entrées. FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT USAJOBS.GOV
From the restaurant’s humble wait staff to its experienced chefs, they work tirelessly to ensure nothing short of top notch service from start to finish. The cuisine at Seaside has been known to allure American and Okinawan customers in from far and wide. While impeccably executed and presented as fine dining, Seaside is economically friendly. You can dine on American classics like steak and shrimp, salmon, crab cakes, fish tacos, burgers, and even their beloved seafood mac and cheese.
Crabcake Burger Chow down on a crispy crab cake served on a brioche bun with fresh lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and topped with our signature Seaside sauce. Garlic Shrimp Pasta We heard your voice, took a poll, and brought back the most requested item from our previous menu! Enjoy this fanfavorite pecorino style pasta, tossed with olive oil, sautéed garlic, shrimp, and red pepper flakes. Classic Cheeseburger Enjoy this popular choice! We have mastered the art of flame-grilling. Served on a brioche bun with fresh lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, and our signature Seaside sauce.
The newest star of the menu is a 20-ounce Tennessee whiskey glazed pork chop, which is cooked over an open flame grill and then topped with a succulent glaze. The fire perfectly chars the exterior giving it classic grill marks and caramelized edges. This treat is sure to hit the spot for even the most discerning palate. This menu item has quickly become a favorite of many. Taste it for yourself. We are sure you will agree!

Her work also involves Joint Chemical Agent Detector (JCAD) machines, which you may have seen around the base during exercises. These machines can detect nerve, blood, and blister agents in the air. If we were attacked, those agents could be sent via missiles to harm the base. The JCAD machines do a lot to keep us all safe.
