Umi no Hi ” Marine Day: の海 日
It’s “ofishally” beach season! To revel in the summertide and enjoy the ocean views with warmer weather, Japanese and Okinawans commence the upcoming season with a “Marine Day,” also known as “Umi no Hi, “Ocean Day,” or “Sea Day.” This holiday gives people a chance to give acknowledgement and show gratitude to the sea nature Gods for providing such creations to enjoy and cherish.
Japanese rely massively on the seas and oceans as Japan is surrounded by a colossal blue blanket of it. Its importance is valued as deep as the ocean as it offers an abundance of natural resources and has become a livelihood for many; all the more, it has also stood as a protection for them in the past.
Japanese triumphed against a battle with the Mongol Empire fleet not just once, but twice by virtue of the mighty powerful storm current.
Marine Day wasn’t always a celebration or kick off to summer vacation; it was once celebrated, in 1941, for the safe return of the Meiji Emperor after a lengthy sea excursion. It was not until 1995 when it transformed to the current holiday today. It is celebrated annually on the third Monday in July to correlate with the Happy Monday System.
This unique Japanese holiday means summer vacation is in sight in regard to students, and a 3-day weekend for many personnel. It is when a mass of families and friends travel to the beach to enjoy the waves, sunshine, and each other’s company. Unable to visit the coast, other parts of Japan celebrate in their own ways as well.
Some commemorate the holiday by lighting up the night with a lantern festival where locals and tourists alike light up different colored lanterns and release them into the water. Others visit aquariums and pools where they hold special events and activities.
Lastly, citizens in Yokohama, a city south of Tokyo, are graced with an annual fireworks display as it was the last destination of the Meiji Emperor’s long sea excursion.
Celebrating Marine Day here is as easy as driving to the bountiful of beaches in existence. We are fortunate to be able to enjoy the aquaculture and the naturalistic ocean views wherever we glance. Hence, let us take time to show our gratitude toward the seas this Marine Day.

#FindSomething Special
By Janelle Rivera
Prime beach season is here! Time to take your cameras out for more #FindSomethingSpecial submissions! Don’t forget your sunscreen, sunglasses, and water as you venture out on the infinite incredible undertakings you can achieve while on the island this beach season. But before we show you all things summer, here are a few highlights from the last several months that you can add to your “Oki things to do” list. You’re welcome!
@xoxo.hyeyoung visited Hija River during the week-long holiday Golden Week for Children’s Day with her lovely kids. The air current made for a perfect photo op as the koinobori swam through the skies on top of the streaming body of water. Children’s Day was celebrated in May and is observed throughout Japan as a time to pause and reflect on our children’s health and growth. Hyeyoung made sure to spend as much quality time with her children especially during this memorable holiday.
@debby.bullard came across this beautiful waterfront with stunning rock formations while she journeyed through the island. No matter the weather, a beach trip is always a good idea in Okinawa; whether it’s a walk on the beach or a picnic by the beach. Of course, let’s not forget to grab a few instagrammable photos of the uniqueness of each location like what Debby made sure to do.
@the_great_family_odyssey spent the day with her family enjoying donuts and delicious drinks. This café is not only an excellent place to get pastries during a family date, but also a perfect spot for aesthetically pleasing photos as every aspect of it, inside and out, is picture perfect. We love a good café or restaurant where you can relax, enjoy, eat delectable food, and take creative pictures!
Make sure to add these locations to your pins for future expeditions with family and friends. When you do #FindSomethingSpecial, don’t forget to use the hashtag for a chance to be featured! Happy posting!
