Typhoon Season Starts NOW 1 JUNE - 1 NOVEMBER What is a typhoon? A typhoon, like a hurricane, is formed through a process called Tropical Cyclogenesis. Tropical cyclones feed off of heat which is released when humid air rises off of the ocean’s surface into the atmosphere. Typhoons are unique in the aspect that they have a “warm core” where as other storms have a “cold core” as they feed off cold air. There are numerous conditions that need to be obtained before a typhoon can form. The area surrounding Okinawa is prime breeding ground for these storms with the high humidity and water temperatures. There are various threats associated with typhoons. Typhoon winds can soar to extreme levels which can send debris flying through the air. Storm surges may also become prevalent, raising water levels and further intensifying waves caused by high winds.

MECHANIC HIGHLIGHT Donald Kempton is one of Auto Hobby’s talented mechanics. Kempton is retired military, and said when he was in the service, he worked in electronics but was always drawn to mechanics. Once in the civilian world, he became a certified mechanic and just celebrated 25 years at Auto Hobby! He told me the garage can handle typical repairs like basic maintenance, JCI prep, AC work, and more. Kempton said they are always willing to troubleshoot and understand not knowing what is wrong with your vehicle can be frustrating. He said they recognize that Oki cars are viewed as a temporary investment, but he said that it’s important to keep up on routine maintenance to make sure you and your family are safe on the road. The knowledgeable staff at Auto Hobby can change your oil, top off your fluids, and check that pesky dashboard light that keeps coming on. Kempton said the biggest misconception about Auto Hobby is that it is a do-it-yourself place. He said while many shops at CONUS bases are DIY, Auto Hobby can do the work! Kempton said they have many qualified Japanese and American mechanics who are eager to dive into your Oki car troubles. Also, if you’re interested in learning about how to take care of your car yourself, they offer classes. The friendly staff at Auto Hobby also asks for any feedback on how to improve or expand services. They want you to know that the customer comes first, and they are excited for the chance to serve you! Written by: Ellen Ice

Written by: Ellen Ice

For last month’s Day in the Life article, we talked to the pilots in the 67th Fighter Squadron. For this month’s article, we wanted to experience the other side of that mission, with the crews who keep the 67th F-15C Eagles healthy and ready to fly. Capt Tyler Gibson is the OIC (officer in charge) of the 67th Aircraft Maintenance Unit, and said, “This is probably one of the most incredible teams I’ve ever had the privilege of leading.” Gibson said the unit is compromised of around 267 maintainers, who are broken into specialties across five Air Force Specialty Codes. He said their overall mission includes providing safe, reliable, and combat effective aircraft in order to secure a free and open INDOPACOM. Scheduled maintenance, unscheduled breaks and preventative actions are only a few tasks in the complex symphony orchestrated by Fighting Cock Maintainers.

This is probably one of the most incredible teams I’ve ever had the privilege of leading The F-15C has been around since the Vietnam War, so part of the maintenance is keeping up with a jet that is decades old. “We’ve had a lot of corrosion issues especially with the humidity in this environment,” MSgt Robert Williams, Maintenance Production Superinterindent, said. Williams

FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT USAJOBS.GOV

67th Aircraft Maintenance Unit said a typical day involves managing aircraft status, ensuring aircraft are available for flying operations, and driving the overall maintenance production effort on the flightline. He coordinates with outside agencies, squadrons and teams to get the mission accomplished. 67 AMU is responsible for keeping 27 Eagles as operational as possible. Depending on the day, and whether or not there is an exercise, the airmen work to get 18-28 sorties accomplished.

Anything going wrong could be extremely major, the weapons are very sensitive, so any mistakes could be dire The team told us communication between the operations and maintenance side is extremely important. Gibson said knowing what part of the jet is malfunctioning when the engines are still hot can save valuable time in finding and solving the issue. “When a pilot is coming back and they sqwuak hey this is what’s going on, letting us know that then allows us to get the proper speciality to the jet to talk to them on the spot.” SrA Corey Watts, a Weapons Load Crew Chief, is responsible for making sure the weapons are loaded onto the jet as safely and as quickly as possible. “Anything going wrong could be extremely major, the weapons are

very sensitive, so any mistakes could be dire.” Watts said the weapons loaders have monthly evaluations to make sure they are as proficient as possible. He said they also compete with the other weapons load crews in quarterly load competitions to keep their skills sharp. In a real world scenario, Capt Gibson said the weapons section of AMU is invaluable. “Without weapons it’s an expensive airliner,” Gibson said. He said the overall mission of 67 AMU is extremely important. Gibson said Kadena has the only air-to-air combat squadrons in the Indo-Pacific region, making their contribution invaluable. 67 AMU manages the day-to-day mission readiness of the Eagles, along with TDYs, deployments, and assisting where needed in the operating theater. Here in Okinawa, that can also mean prepping the jets for a typhoon.

It’s us or nobody, it’s a no fail mission “It’s us or nobody, it’s a no fail mission,” Gibson said. Gibson wanted to shout out his squadron for being back to back winners of the 2018 and 2019 AMU of the Year. While visiting 67 AMU the squadron pride was obvious, and the love of their jobs was palatable. I never get tired of hearing the Eagles over Kadena, and I know the pilots as well as the rest of the wing appreciate your tireless efforts to keep the jets healthy. Thank you!
