Okinawa’s Great Tug—of —War Celebrations

We’ve enjoyed tug-of-war at parties, school events, and various gatherings, but did you know that Okinawa hosts the world’s largest Tug-of-War event? This tradition, held across the island annually from July to October, is more than just a game. It is a cultural ritual where communities come together to express their gratitude for a successful harvest, pray for rain, prosperity, and peace.

In Okinawa, three major tug-of-war festivals are held each year to bring people together in celebration. These historic events are a time for locals to unite and welcome tourists from around the world to experience such a unique and huge, vibrant cultural tradition.

The atmosphere comes alive as eager crowds gather to join in the festivities lled with history, legacy, and symbolism. Okinawa’s tug-of-war events represent a celebration of community spirit, cultural pride, and cherished traditions that have been passed down through generations.

From a merely regular tug-of-war for praying for prosperity, it grew as a grand local festival after World War II. The most talked-about and largest event is the Naha Great Tug-of-War in October, where a 200-meter, 43-ton giant rope is pulled back and forth across the intersection of Kumoji in Naha, Okinawa.

This speci c festival garnered a spot in the Guinness World Records (1995 – 2005) for being the world’s largest rice straw rope

used in a tug-of-war. The event kicks o with two ropes, connected by a large pole, being pulled in opposite directions. Folks are to pick a side – East or West – and pull as hard as they can until one side claims victory.

Itoman’s Great Tug-of-War is Okinawa’s second largest tug-of-war festivity and is held on August 15 on the lunar calendar, near the time of the harvest moon. Itoman City, known as the shermen city, observes this holiday for people to gather and pray for a bountiful harvest ahead among other things. The main event is held just after a “michi-junee” parade where youths wear costumes from local folklore to honor their ancestors.

Similar to the Naha Great Tug-of-War, East and West teams take their side and pull a 180-meter, ve-ton rope to victory. Additionally, Itoman was awarded the grand prize at Japan’s annual Hometown Event Awards in 2013!

The third largest event is Yonabaru’s Great Tug-of-War Festival held on June 26 on the

lunar calendar. The festivities begin with several people in costume standing atop a 90-meter, ve-ton rope as the crowd parades through the streets. The rope symbolizes a dragon soaring through the heavens.

Once a winner has been decided at each of these tugs-of-war, participants are allowed to cut a piece of the rope to take home for good luck. All festivities feature local live entertainment, delicious local food, and performances for everyone to enjoy.

Get ready to power up and explore each of these cities as you dive into the unique and unforgettable Okinawan traditions that few get to experience! Not sure where to begin? Start your adventure with Kadena ITT and get tuggin’. See you there!
