“I began with genre painting and then switched over to abstract and conceptual art. Initially my favorite artists were German Neo-expressionists such as Georg Baselitz, and others such as Willem de Kooning, Cy Twombly, Emil Nolde. But something happened to me when I saw Franz Kline’s works for the first time. Thanks to these works I began to view art from a completely different angle. The subject was no longer plasticity (though for me it undoubtedly is present in this artist’s works), but something which I had never reflected upon earlier in the context of art. Certain courage to refuse to follow rules, in the name of an idea, a game, communication in fine art. Art for me is above all a way of communicating, through which I can convey my thoughts and ideas to the viewer. The themes which interest and inspire me are very varied. I am a multi-faceted person who is easily entertained and so I have many interests. My recent works reflect on interpersonal communication, both within and between cultures, and more generally - I played with the concept of a ‘communication tube’. I am much concerned with the question of whether it is possible to convey information to another person accurately, both in real life and through art, where painting serves as the medium. Another topic that interests me lately is the concept of objective/subjective understanding of the world. Does objective understands possibility in principle? What do ‘I’ and ‘the world’ mean, anyway? Such existential questions greatly interest me.” - Maria Sidljarevitš
