B

amboo has been widely used in the traditional tropical construction as the building structure, roofing or finishing. In Hong Kong, bamboo is even used as scaffolding in the construction site even in the highrise constructions. As a natural material, bamboo requires minimal factory processing before it can be used as a construction material. It is also a fast growing and renewable material. As the construction technology developing, bamboo can be potentially treated as a main material in large scale building construction. The bamboo pavilion aims to exploring the possibilites of bamboo construction in combinating the new building technology by understanding the basic and traditional bamboo construction method.

Structure and Circulation Diagram

The Lepak Santai Restaurant is a direct, architectural rendition of the Traditional Malay House as found in the Kg Baru, Kuala Lumpur indeed all over the country of Malaysia as well as Indonesia. Space planning of the restaurant taken inspiration from the space planning of traditional Malay House to trace back the traditional Malay living lifestyle by fitting in the more complex programmes such as office, music studio, restaurant, kitchen, toilet and other utility spaces. The massing are divided into four, the ‘Lepau” as the entry foyer, ‘Rumah Ibu’ as the main food serving and music performance area, ‘Selang’ as the linkage of the main spaces and ‘Rumah Dapur’ as utility space the kitchen, toilet and storage. Structural grid of the restaurant is generated from the spirit of the house called ‘Tiang Seri’ which is the main column. Traditionally, the main column is the column which first erected from ground, it represents the life of the house as well as the fortune of the dweller. The spirit of the ‘Tiang Seri’ is translated in the restautant as a focal point where the performance stage located, with the flow of water from top. The double volume translucent massing which is the main space linking the other spaces visually by the water flow as an internal view which can be seen all round the building.

he breathing skin system make use of both the local natural material - rattan and bamboo as an experiment in combining natural materials with the existng bulidng technology. By using the traditional weaving method betewwn the rattan and the mild steel rod compose a building skin which provide interesting shades and shadow as well as privacy for the internal space. The rattan skin encourage the cross ventilation within the building as it allows natural air going through to ensure the internal air movement is maximised. While the bamboo is used together with the adjustable louver window which was very commonly used in the tropical modern architecture during the 1960s and 70s. Combination of both encourage cross ventilation, provide shades while protecting rainwater from the internal of the building.

arawak as the largest state in Malaysia having a population of 2.07 Million formed by 27 Distinct indigenous ethnic groups that speaks at least 45 different languages or dialects. They can be categorised into 7 major ethnic groups, which are Iban, Chinese, Malay, Melanau, Bidayuh, Orang Ula and Penan. Each having their own languages or dialects, lifestyle and culture. Therefore it is interesting to propose a Ethnic & Cultural Centre in the capital town of Sarawak, Kuching to encourage the deeper understanding of diverse culture of the state. The site is situated along the existing riverfront promenade, directly opposite of the old court house which built in colonial English Style. There is an existing historical building functioned as a prison house during the colonisation period of the Brooke family.

ketches on right showing the design process of the massing and planning of the Ethnic & Culture Centre. Massing of the Ethnic & Culture Centre following the axis which extended from the symmetrical old court house opposite the road forming an open space in the middle surrounding the prison house. The open space which crafted out of the building is the place where events and programmes happen. The old prison house turns out to be a focus of the open space as an object to be appreciated. Pedestrain access of the building mainly from the road crossing from old court house as well as the riverfront promenade. Therefore the open space palying a role as a node along the promenade to house for activities. Interior spaces are made as flexible as possible to allow the change of exibition spaces.

ield which located next to the Sultan Ahmad Shah Mosque is the node in the Kuantan township. Most of the event or carnival happening in the field. However, the stretch of riverside land where the proposed site located is a potential recreational spot for the township. The proposal is focus on reviving the memory of Kuantan as a fishing village. The idea of having pavilions with linking bridge supported by tilts is trying to trace back the sense of the fishing village. Four tilted massing responding to the entrances around the building, under one large canopy with a round opening that bringing intensed daylighting into the heart of the building. Volume that crafted by the massing become an interesting public aminities. The centre courtyard encourages visual linkage from floor to floor encouraging social connection of the public.

43

Ground Floor Plan

The multi function building consists of local water way ticket counter , cafe at the ground floor, commercial outlets at the first floor as well as artist gallery at the second floor. The experience moving from outside to inside of the building is a geometrical transformation of four massing into an odd shaped courtyard compliment by a round opening of the canopy. The trees and the water feature at the centre softened the sharp edges, creating a balanced contrast of the space with the shower of daylighting. 45
