ADMINISTRATION PRINCIPAL’S WORD

I

wish to congratulate and also extend my sincere thanks to the editorial team of teachers for producing the first school magazine, the Ore 2016. I further thank you for the platform, given to me to share a word with the readers. A school magazine of this nature gives the reader an opportunity to know what the school offers in terms of curriculum, co-curricular activities and facilities. It also exposes the reader to whatever goes on in the school programme by reading articles of the administration, staff and the entire pupils. Let me take this opportunity to highlight a brief history of this school. Kigali Parents’ School started on 18th April 1995. We started with six pupils and a teaching staff of four. I am proud to inform you that, I was part of the first four teaching staff and a founder respectively. Today the school boasts of 2088 pupils in nursery and primary. It’s on record that our school managed to produce the best student in primary leaving exams for the last thirteen years. This is

Mission & Vision

Our mission: To provide affordable and quality

education.

Our vision: To produce the most skillful,

competitive citizens who are models of servant leadership in the community in future.

entirely attributed to our teaching staffs who work selflessly to register such achievement. I am also proud of the cordial relationship between the school administration and parents which has enabled us to propel to greater heights. I am also indebted to Kigali Parents’ alumni who amidst their busy schedule, managed to take part in publishing this magazine . We are very proud of you and also wish you success in all your endeavours. Let your thoughts and actions always manifest the firm foundation you got from Kigali parents school. I once again thank the editorial board for the commendable job done. May God bless you all.

THE ORE

A WORD FROM DIRECTOR IN CHARGE OF ADMINISTRATION

I

greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. At this precious moment, I take this opportunity to thank the editorial team for organizing the first edition of the Ore Magazine 2016. With great pleasure and humility, I again thank our esteemed parents for choosing Kigali Parents’ School as the fountain of knowledge for your children. At KPS, we aim at raising a child as a whole” academically, spiritually, physically and morally.

Why educate at KPS;

Our school is a pioneer Anglo-phone school that has maintained fabulous performance since 1996 up to date. We have a system that enables our teachers to provide the necessary content a child needs at primary level. Our hierarchy of administration also enables the smooth flow of information from the school to our parents. Our cordial relationship with the staff and parents

helps our children to feel a home away from home.

Message to the children;

Always have passion for what you are doing, be what you want to be tomorrow, today. It is good for one to start thinking about tomorrow today. Remember time lost will never be gained. Never postpone what you can do today to tomorrow. Be careful about the kind of friends you make. Good and focused friends will lead you to success but bad friends will lead you to failure. Read as many books as you can; a knowledgeable person is an informed person.

Why parents should get involved in education of their children:

When parents get involved in their children’s education, it improves on their children’s behavior and performance. It also improves on the children’s attendance. This is because children know very well that their parents would visit the school any time. It helps parents to get reports about their children and in case of any misbehavior; parents are able to control the situation early enough. It also improves on the relationship among the children, teachers and parents. Remember, our children’s success doesn’t depend on how much money we spend on their education but rather on how much time we invest in their education. God bless you all.

A WORD FROM DIRECTOR OF STUDIES - Upper Section

I

would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the editorial team for working tirelessly to develop such a wonderful magazine. Kigali Parents’ School is a private school that runs from Nursery to primary six. It is located in an urban setting of Kigali city, Gasabo district, Kimironko sector, Bibare cell in Inyange village. It’s only 12km from the city center along the road to the Eastern province. It is a school with spacious grounds and a magnificent environment. The teachers and pupils are working very hard to improve the quality of teaching and learning which is leading to standards rising rapidly. Our main aim is to give each young person an education of real worth, one which will prepare him/her to take a place in society as a responsible, informed person who has high self esteem and respect for others. On arriving at Kigali Parents’ school, you immediately notice the excellent relationship evident between pupils and staff and the purposeful environment evident in lessons. With this foundation, our pupils’ journey to being confident, happy and able to achieve their aspirations has already started. Over the past years the school has been on an amazing journey of improvement and now we continue to be outstanding in the country. We look forward to developing the whole child and pride ourselves on the fact that we see each child as unique, with their own strength and personality. We are committed to creating safe, stimulating and exciting learning environment where children can

feel inspired and confident that their ideas and options will be valued. We are proud in involving parents in the education of their children, ensuring that the links between school and home are strong and support our children‘s learning. We value the advice of all members of our learning community and we use feedback to help us improve. A school is judged by many measures and we are proud to be judged by the achievements of our pupils long after they have graduated. Our motto “Seek knowledge and serve” Challenges both teachers and pupils to be loyal to its fulfillment. I therefore thank all parents and guardians and those who wish us well, who have on different occasions given ideas for the smooth running of the school. We pledge to our dear parents, “The sky is the limit,” nothing will stop us from providing the best education for our children. May the Almighty God bless you as you continue to read this magazine.

A WORD FROM DIRECTOR OF STUDIES - Lower Section

I

wish to convey my sincere regards to the entire Kigali Parents’ School community, and extend my heartfelt gratitude to the editorial board for the idea of coming up with the first edition of our school magazine. About our nursery section, Kigali Parents’ School offers high quality pre-primary education. This is attributable to the quality of teaching and care provided to the young learners. Our Nursery section is comprised of three main classes. Baby class, Middle class and Top class. Baby Class is for the first time school learners of three to four years. Each of these classes is sub divided into six manageable streams. Each stream has a well qualified teacher who is well trained in early childhood Development. This teacher has an assistant to provide more care to the learners. We have spacious classrooms with a conducive and rich learning environment which provides

incidental learning. We have a well designed curriculum that covers all the content a child is supposed to get during his/her pre-primary education. We emphasize reading, writing and speech practice. Our syllabus is organized in such a way that all these skills are catered for. This is the reason our learners are able to read write and speak English by the time they join primary one. To continue the learning process in and outside school, our learners take homework daily. We also have co-curricular activities where our learners are engaged in different activities to promote holistic education. For co-curricular activities, we have spacious and enough play area as well as enough materials for every learner to satisfy his/her curiosity. We carry out formative continuous assessment using a combination of the following; Observation, written and oral questioning, We also carry out summative assessment at the end of every academic year for deciding on progression and selection into the next class. Our learners take their breakfast at break time and it is well supervised by the class teacher and the helper. Our dear parents and readers, I thank you for entrusting us with your children. We strive to give you the best. May the Lord bless you all.

L

ooking back at 21 years of existence of our school, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the almighty God for this far he has brought us. Since 1995, Kigali parents’ school has had a steady progress which I really attribute to God’s grace. A vote of thanks goes to our dear parents who have been supporting us by entrusting us with their children and on top of that paying school dues in time. This has enabled us to plan a head for the school development. Kigali Parents’ School indeed has undergone a massive expansion of primary ranging from construction of the library-computer laboratory block and the auditorium. At the start of 2014 we were able to open up a secondary school section, just opposite the primary, with fully furnished buildings. We attribute all this achievement to your continued support and cooperation. At Kigali Parents’ School, we leave no stone unturned. With the achievement of necessary facilities, we also take a longer stride to serve you and support our children’s education to become upright and useful citizens for the betterment of our country Rwanda and future generations. “Train a child the right way such that even when they grow up, they will never depart

from it.” Our dear parents, invest in your child by availing us the opportunity to nurture and groom him/her at the roots. The dividends will certainly give you a big smile at the end of the day. As an English man says “A child is a bank where you can deposit your most precious treasures’’ And the country as a whole shall benefit immensely from the human resource established. I wish you the best as you read this magazine and your support towards the school’s development is highly appreciated.

1.

Teachers attitude towards Mathematics

It is well known that good teachers love the subjects they teach. On the other hand, if a teacher has a negative attitude on Math, it automatically shows up in his teaching and this demoralizes the learners. Teachers should have a positive attitude towards the subject to motivate the learners (value the subject, learners will value it too).

2.

The teaching should not put down a wrong answer.

Mistakes during lessons should be valued because they help learners to think critically. Ask the student with wrong answers to explain how they came to that answer in the class. Everyone can learn from his her mistake. Sometimes an answer is wrong because of a calculation mistake.

mr. BYAMUNGU Simon

3.

Take the emphasis off tests and avoid time tests.

Tests are good for evaluation and assessment but they shouldn’t be the ultimate goal. The true goal of a mathematics teacher is that the students are able to apply Mathematical concepts in real life situations and are prepared for higher education levels.

4. 20

Don’t present Mathematics as an unbearable subject

When a teacher or any adult tells a child that they

Kigali Parents’ School Publication

cannot learn Mathematics or is not good at Mathematics, they will believe that. This causes them to develop a fixed mind set towards their intelligence and learning believing their “smarts are fixed” and cannot change. As teachers and parents, we ought not to give children such messages but rather help them develop a growth mind set.

5.

Show learners that Mathematics is a creative subject.

One of the reasons for Maths anxiety is that Maths is offered or taught as, “There is only One way to do this and you need to cram it so as to do it right”, without any room for variability or creativity. This is not true. The basic facts of math are true and don’t change, but the way we solve problems change. Children can be much more motivated if they are given “open ended problems to solve”.

6.

Find good reasons to study Mathematics.

Children are more motivated when they realize where all Maths is needed. Point out the everyday applications of Math to children. Make Mathematics more interesting by using recreational Mathematics to motivate the learners, such as puzzles, board games and also incorporate music in your lessons.

I am sure, our learners find Science a simple subject when they start studying it in its subdivisions at secondary and tertiary levels. teaching has yielded great observers, analyzers, critical thinkers, data organizers and many other skills. Our esteemed readers of this magazine, I want to let you know that the world has gone Science. Don’t be left behind. MUGUME Arthur Head of Department

ocial Studies commonly abbreviated as SST is one of the seven subjects taught at Kigali Parents’ School. SST has for several times been one of the best performed subjects at KPS in both internal and National Examinations. With a strong team of eleven dedicated teachers from primary one to primary six, SST has been made a rather practical subject than a theory one as many people think. Audio visual lessons are

usually conducted from

the computer lab as a way of making lessons more practical, lively and interesting. This has made our learners love the subject more. Historically, Social Studies has its roots in the early twentieth century with its emphasis on the nature of the individual learner and on the process of learning self. This interesting subject was first taught in the USA. Up to this time, Social Studies is composed of discrete subject areas, with a primary emphasis on

geography and history. To a slightly lesser degree, civics is also featured, completing the triumvirate. Later, Social Studies’ specialists came up with an objective of instilling good citizenship among the people. Social Studies helps learners to understand the need and values of good citizenship, like responsibility, culture of peace, tolerance, justice, democracy, patriotism, solidarity and national unity and reconciliation, and their role in promoting these values. In addition, the subject basically helps the learners understand the interdependence of people, the physical environment, and how it affects the quality of people’s lives. The subject also helps the learners to understand Rwanda’s geographical, political and development linkages with the rest of the world

am humbled and filled with gratitude as I welcome you to the First Edition of the Ore 2016. Dear parents, it’s with gratitude and honour to appreciate your support in promoting games and sports in this school. This is observed basing on the sports attire worn by our learners and the different play materials used during the games and sports activities. We appreciate your effort in promoting child play. I thank the principal of Kigali parents’ school for the wonderful sports facilities i.e. the two football fields, a basketball pitch. Volley ball court and netball court. Thanks for keeping us in gear. Kigali Parents’ School values physical education. Physical Education enhances the development of knowledge, creative thinking and social interaction through play and mental exercise. This shows that physical education is an important component of the total education that should be provided to each learner in Rwanda’s education and the world at large. In today’s fast growing society, there is need to be dynamic, a class academic contribution is essential, however in co-curricular activities, we look at the life skills which are the abilities that the learner develops for positive behavior and the “values” which are the desired

Kigali Parents’ School Publication

standards that are accepted by the society. These positive values shape good behavior like love, endurance, appreciation, co-operation, sharing ideas, team-work, and respect for one another. In addition to the values of games and sports, skills of leadership and team-work are promoted, learners are able to improve on their interpersonal relationships/friendship formation, improve in decision making, negotiation, self-esteem, self awareness and copying with emotions and stress. From the science point of view, games and sports activities improve on the functioning of body systems and organs in modern life. Proper circulation of blood is improved as such exercises are being practiced. More still, the sweating indicates that proper usage of digested food in the body is at its apex. There are four houses in our school; these are categorized according to famous animals Lions: ever strong, mighty hands that ever lived

Elephants: on land have their pride

Tiger/leopards: great hunters that

Zebra: lovely and sweet wonderers within the tropics

t has been by God’s grace and blessings that we make this achievement of producing the first edition of our school magazine under the Chairmanship of Tr. Enos. Here, we bring you a portion of God’s service in our school. According to Job 28:28, “The fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom,” Kigali parents’school is a Christian based school that puts God before anything we do. This relates far back to its founders who are religious people. All school activities commence with a prayer. Every class must engage in a prayer before the beginning of the first lesson. Even at the end of the day, pupils must

30

Kigali Parents’ School Publication

pray before going home. This has yielded prayerful and God fearing children. We also have a weekly lunch hour where a teacher preaches the word of God to others. This has helped our teachers to walk in the light of God and to serve the school well. Towards the end of every academic year, our candidates are dedicated to God by His servant who prays for blessings over them. I am certain this is the reason why the school excels academically. May God continue to richly bless our school as well as our partners and all well wishers.

Fun with debating

ebating is fun and very interesting especially if one is to relax the mind, break boredom or scare away stress. On the other hand, it is very educative. One can explore a lot to rely on even for daily life situations. It is a great hidden treasure one should hold. Not only does debating impart research skills to the learners but also creates confidence, fluency and positive arguments, as well

as making wise conclusions. At our school, debating is a regular extra–curricular activity carried out every Thursday on a weekly basis from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Our pupils from primary three to six are always actively involved in debating. They really enjoy this day because it brings all of them together to hear the vibrant sounds of laughter with joyful arguments. Debates are carried out in different streams for stream mates to compete. Sometimes it is

Kigali Parents’ School Publication

31

THE ORE organized at class level where two different classes meet to raise their arguments. Interclass competitions are also carried out from the school main hall. We also organize debates between boys and girls. Such debates are always very hot especially if the motion is concerning gender. Watching the strong men and women of tomorrow arguing to the best of their understanding is very interesting. With such motions, the children end up realizing the principles of gender equality. I strongly believe that the future generation will realize the potential of the whole gender. Other debates carry open motions, where boys and girls combine depending on the aspect one feels is better than the other. During such debates, there is always admirable cooperation amongst boys and girls of either side. This promotes a sense of social responsibility and making ethical decisions and judgments together as boys and girls. Bear it with me that these young children can think and reason beyond expected if they are given chance and ample time. NAKUBULWA GERTRUDE – Debate Patroness

Objectives • • • • •

To arouse and cultivate learners’ interest in learning science. To encourage learners to participate actively in the scientific activities. To promote the use of IT in learning Science. To understand science facts through experimentation. To develop learners’ awareness and concern for scientific issues in personal, social, environmental and

technological contexts.

Science at Kigali Parents’ School

The Rwandan curriculum clearly identifies the impact of science education on students. It is based on the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes. This can’t be achieved without clubs in classes and the school at large. Learners find learning interesting when they work in groups. Kigali Parents’ School students can now experience the joy of scientific discovery and nurture

Kigali Parents’ School Publication

33

THE ORE their natural curiosity about the world around them themselves as they work in their clubs. In so doing, they develop critical and creative thinking skills, challenge themselves to identify questions and draw evidence-based conclusions. At Kigali Parents’ School, we have taken a long stride in this. We engage our students in practical lessons where they have to make their own discoveries. We also often have science fares where students freely express their views about different science facts. Our students have been introduced to a system that demands them to discover scientific concepts rather than relying on the teacher’s and textbook knowledge only. All this has been

achieved and has made Science an interesting and enjoyable subject to all students at Kigali Parents’ School. Our learners have found science easier and more interesting through this club where ‘’Discovery of facts based on practical

activities’’ is the motto. We dedicate all this to the school administration which has always equipped the Science teachers with required teaching/ learning materials that have eased the Science teaching-learning process.

ENVIRONMENT CLUB

T

he environment consists of things around us, such as air, land, wild life, people, climate and trees. These form the natural resources on which we depend. This means that we need to team up to improve and conserve our environment. Every individual should see to it that he has made a positive move against the numerous causes of environmental degradation. It is my plea to all people to stop any activity that would lead to the destruction of trees. Cultivating near the river banks and pouching our animals in National parks. The quest for quick money has led to the destruction of our forest. Once a green

country Rwanda has now turned into a vast bare land. The method we adopt in the disposal of garbage should be environmentally friendly. It is our responsibility to maintain cleanliness by disposing litter in the right way. We should make use of dustbins. We should avoid scattering rubbish everywhere. We all know that cleanliness is next to godliness.

Kigali Parents’ school Environment club calls upon every reader of this Magazine to take it at heart to protect, conserve and improve on our Environment. We proudly exhibit an exemplary natural green environment as Kigali Parents’ school Environment Club. AHIMBISIBWE Elisa Club Patron

STORIES AND COMPOSITIONS A BIRTHDAY SURPRISE TO DADDY

D

addy’s Birthday is always 10th June. On this day, he takes us out for dinner. We order for different meals of which my best is always fillet. However, last year’s birthday was almost a flop. Dad was not himself. He was a stranger in his own house. Why so? He had misplaced his treasure in the house a day before. I myself was not in my usual jolly mood because of a stomachache and my grandma advised me to lie on my bare belly on the tile floor. Stomachache makes one accept every suggestion as long as it helps you to recover quickly. I lay flat on the floor groaning and the ice cold floor indeed cooled my tummy. My cheek pecking the floor, I looked at something staringly under the far corner of the sideboard. I went forth to find if it was my lost toy car or my small wooden safe. I couldn’t reach and went out for a stick to pull it over. Guess what! It was neither my toy car nor a wood safe. It was Dad’s treasure. Fortunately, no one recognized what I was doing. “Wow, I’ve got my family another birthday dinner”, I said to myself.

It was almost 2: 00 p.m and alas everybody had lost hope of a special outing. I hugged myself, tiptoed into my Daddy’s bedroom. “Surpriiiiiiiiiise!”, I joyfully yelled out . Dad leaped out of the bed thinking I was to pour him water as a birthday routine. He was frightened and looked so angry like a cheetah. Realizing that he was almost yelling at me angrily, I handed over his surprise. His golden treasure, a big bundle of money that he had kept in the drawer of the side board. That bundle had rolled over to the ground through the other end of the drawer that had an unknown hole in it. To Daddy, he thought that he had kept the money on his bed drawer of which he’s the only one with the key. So he couldn’t suspect anyone to have stolen the money and his thoughts were that maybe he could have left the money in his supermarket drawer and one of his trusted workers took it. Daddy carried me all over the house running and everybody was surprised at a thrilled Daddy. He ordered us all to dress up for the best dinner of my life. Dad loves me more than anyone at home and tit for tat; he surprised me with a brand new three wheeled bicycle.

CINDERELLA THE PRINCE OF KPS

E

veryone thought it was the usual joke as the teacher announced that we were to hold a class reading competition to choose the so called Cinderella and The Prince, basing on who reads best. Reading best requires one to read as if Obama has stepped in a P.3 class. It calls for firmness, breath control, punctuation, audibility and most of all, pronunciation of words in real life British- American accent.

habour of English fluency nicknamed the “Queen’s land” Truth is stranger than fiction, the future orators and senators are being groomed at KPS if not already. Back to the point; owing to the emotional and relevant stories, we all love the series of “Cinderella” books and I bet that’s why the teacher

disregarded all other collections of readers and choose Cinderella as our bench mark. The first paragraphs were a tedious exercise but towards the third page, a total American on CNN news was in Kigali Parents school newsroom. In two day’s time everyone had taken part in reading as we are familiar to our teacher’s reading culture; he hates a “Race of snails” reading

so to call it. A team of judges announced the top competitors for the final showdown. Not only did the judges predict my winning but also the whole class realized that I was a Cinderella. I mean!! I am a Cinderella, a star and so is my comrade, The Prince.

My mom speaks English and French, so she can translate for some lost tourists at the National Park. She has a campsite at Mgahinga Park. Rwanda is a home of Gorillas. We see them live here not in the zoo. They are in the Mgahinga and Bwindi Parks. Tourists see them dodging cars along the road. Once I tried to catch a baby Gorilla and the mother growled at me and I ran as fast as I could. My chest was heaving and my legs hurt, but I survived its slaps. BEING SELFISH IS NOT GOOD

O

nce upon a time, there lived a king who wanted to enjoy life alone in that Kingdom. One day, the villagers decided to teach him a lesson. They planned to kidnap him at night. When the night came, they attacked him and took him to their deep village in one’s hut and locked it. In the morning, he found himself in a hut and cried for help but no one came to his rescue. At night when he was very hungry, they opened and gave him grass to eat and he refused. They put him back in the house and locked. Then a housefly entered and told him that his selfishness gave him a lesson. He cried for forgiveness and swore never to be selfish any more. The housefly accepted his apologies and promised to help him. At that night when the villagers were planning to kill him,

the housefly heard them and told him to make a hole in the hut and sleep in the nearby bush. When they came, they burnt the hut to ashes. In the morning the housefly told him to go back to the burnt hut. When they came to check the next day, they found him alive and got scared thinking he was a wizard and took to their heels. After his survival, the king thanked the housefly and went back to the palace. From that day, he promised to share everything with others and never to become selfish again.

WHY PEOPLE SHOULD BEHAVE WELL.

O

nce upon a time, there lived a man called Cyusa. He would abuse and beat people. One day, people planned to revenge in order to show him that they are also human beings like him. So they put hot water in front of his house so that when he comes out of the house, he steps into the hot water and learn a lesson. So he soon came out and stepped into that hot water and screamed. Because of his bad behaviour, no one came to his rescue. Lesson: People must behave well to live in harmony with others. However, two wrongs can never make a right.

ELEPHANT AND THE RAIN

T

here was a very proud elephant which had married the Rain. After some months, they started quarrelling. Elephant said, “I am the mightiest of all

animals.” He used his long trunk to uproot a tree. The rain watched as the tree dried up. She said, “I am going and I will never come back”. She went with her rainmaking properties while Elephant said, “In fact, I don’t need you at all. All the shrubs and grass here are enough for me to survive on”. He trumpeted at the top of his voice. After a couple of weeks, Elephant was so weak that he could hardly move. He gave owl some beads which Rain had made as proof from the Elephant that he had sent the owl. The owl went and said, “Rain, Elephant needs you so much. Please return

to him.” Rain was so angry that she struck the tree at which owl was perching with her lightning tongue in half. Owl flew to another tree but Rain also cut it in half. Owl repeated the message. Rain finally accepted to return. When she saw Elephant in a bad condition, Rain said, “I had told you that your pride would lead you to death.” Rain gave Elephant some water. He asked for forgiveness. Rain forgave him. Elephant and Rain lived happily ever after. KABALISA Melissa P 5 Mercury

NASTY EXPERIENCE

I

n 1994, Rwanda experienced Genocide which caused problems. We lost our dear ones: relatives, friends and neighbors. Not many of us survived. We were scared that it was our last year of life. When the RPF under the command of President Paul Kagame came to end the Genocide, we all risked our lives for our families. We started to rebuild our homes. We built new industries and factories, schools, hospitals and clinics, roads, markets, shops, and many others.

MOBILE PHONES

B

efore the coming of mobile phones in Rwanda, people were using landlines. People who had landline telephones were few because they were expensive. In rural areas, people could walk long distances to reach the post office where they could make a call. However, in the early 90’s mobile phones came into use in Rwanda. MTN (Mobile Telephone Network) was the first mobile telephone company. It was followed by Tigo and Airtel. Mobile Phones are now widely used because they are cheap and convenient. One can make a call any time instead of writing a letter. People write SMS which is sent, received and replied immediately. Mobile phones are also mobile Banks; we have MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Mobile Money. On the other hand, mobile phones have many disadvantages. They need a lot of money for airtime and they are easily stolen. All in all, mobile phones are important; we should learn how to use them in the best way. Remember communication is very important in our lives.

here lived a man and a woman near the forest. The man was called Kamanga and the woman was Tereza. They had twins called Gakuru and Gato whom they used to send to the forest for firewood. One day, they left home and went to the forest to collect firewood. When they approached the forest as usual, they started collecting fire wood. As soon as they started collecting, heavy wind with rain started. They ran as it rained on them until they saw a house and entered for shelter. They found there Mr. Leopard sitting. He welcomed them and went to one of the rooms. He brought meat and kindly gave them to enjoy. Gato ate the meat but Gakuru became suspicious and kept the meat for a while. Mr. Leopard brought

more meat. Gato enjoyed it again and finished it hurriedly but Gato kept it again. “Thank you Mr. Leopard,” said Gato, “Let me go.” “Can I have my meat, please?” roared Mr. Leopard. Gato got scared and worried about what could happen after. “I ate it,” she just replied.” I have your meat,” said Gakuru. “Then give it to me and go,” Replied Mr. Leopard angrily. Gakuru gave the meat and went home alone. Gato was eaten as meat for supper. Do you like meat? Would you like to be eaten? Remember you are also meat to other people. THE THIEF GENOCIDE

I

t was Sunday evening when dad and I were returning home in the afternoon. When we reached Remera, it was so scaring to see somebody, whose clothes were covered by blood, being chased by a crowd. We stopped the car and I was eager to know what had happened. Peter had entered the butcher’s shop pretending to buy meat. He ordered for four kilograms of meat. As soon as the butcher finished packing for him, he held the envelope and started checking his pocket for money. “Yes, please,” peter answered. He went out of the butcher’s shop as if he was going to talk to someone. He ran with four kilograms and the butcher followed him shouting for help. People blocked the way and Peter was caught. The police man came to save the situation. He arrested and took Peter to the police station. I left the place and went home with many questions in my mind. any people ask what genocide is. Genocide is the massive killing of people because of their culture, tribe or who they got married to. Rwanda is a country that once experienced that. During that time children, men and women were killed. Rwandans had been divided into two major tribes by European colonialists. These were The Tutsi and The Hutu. Majority of the people who were killed were the Tutsi and those who killed were the Hutus. Among the killed people, some became heroes that we always remember during the Genocide Memorial week. There are also

great people to thank. For example; Imanzi soldiers, Inyange students and many others who refused to be torn apart and fought for the liberty of Rwandans. Those people refused to be separated as Tutsi and Hutu. They said, “We are all Rwandans.” and I think they showed us youth how to stand for our country. So the message I give to my fellow Rwandans is that, we are all Rwandans but not Tutsi or Hutu. We are one and never again should this bad history happen to any country. SAFETY ON ROADS

I DOMESTIC ANIMALS

D

omestic Animals are animals which are kept at home. Examples include cows, goats, sheep, dogs, rabbits and many others. Some birds are also kept at home such as; hens, parrots, turkeys, peacocks, crested cranes and many others. Other animals kept are; donkeys, camels and horses but horses are rarely kept in Rwanda. These animals are very useful for example. Cows give us milk and meat. Their meat is called beef. Dogs guard people’s homes. Rabbits give us meat, and its poop is used as manure. Goats are also as useful as cows. Hens give us eggs and meat. Peacocks and crested cranes are kept as decoration at home. Other birds like turkeys and ducks are eaten. Donkeys, horses and camels are kept for transport. Camels are mostly used to transport people in desert areas.

n Rwanda there are a lot of accidents on roads. These accidents are caused by careless driving, over speeding, careless riding by motorcyclists and bicycle riders, not respecting traffic lights and zebra crossing, driving cars with mechanical problems and careless crossing of roads by pedestrians. Driving while drunk is another big cause of accidents as the driver has no control of him/her self which leads to loss of control while driving. Bad roads and driving while talking on phone also cause road accidents. We road users should do the following to control these accidents.

DRIVERS • • • • •

Avoid over speeding Avoid drinking alcohol when you are going to drive Respect traffic lights and zebra crossing Respect checks of cars to avoid mechanical problems Drive carefully to keep control of the car you are driving

PEDESTRIANS • • • • •

Be careful and watchful when crossing the road Respect and use the zebra crossing well. Respect traffic lights and only cross the road when there is red light Use well the pavements for pedestrians If you are in a group help each other to cross the road carefully

POLICE • •

Ensure control of cars in the mornings and evenings when the jam is heavy Regularly inspect cars transporting school children to check on mechanical problems Teach children how to cross the road.

y name is Uwase Melissa, I am 13 years old. I live with my parents and I love them so much especially my mother. My mother’s name is Kirabo Charlotte. She works at Rwanda national university as a chancellor. My mother advises me to work hard to become an important person in future. She inspires me. She gives me chances to correct my mistakes whenever I do wrong. She is everything to me because she carried me in the womb for 9 months. She cared and loved me from childhood up to now. I am sure she will never let me down and neither will I. As the proverb states ‘’ Charity

begins at home’’, my mother was my first teacher because she taught me how to behave in public and elsewhere. She taught me a great deal of home chores. At my age I can wash and iron clothes, clean the house and take care of my siblings in my mother’s absence. I can even prepare food at home. My mother is my immediate teacher. In our language, it is said,

“Akabura ntikaboneke ninyina w’umuntu” meaning the lost and not found is one’s mother. My advice to you is that one must love and respect one’s mother when she is still alive. Never and ever disappoint her because she made you what you are now. I hope you will always understand your mother’s advice. Thanks to everyone. May the almighty God bless you all.

ALCOHOLISM SCOURGE

A

lcoholism is a condition where a person can’t do anything without taking alcohol. This person is called an alcoholic. Some people can’t stop drinking alcoholic beverages because they are addicted. There are many reasons why people drink alcohol. Some say, they have been divorced or they are poor. Yes, you are sad but that doesn’t mean you drink that much. The problem is that even if you drink the whole world, you can’t bring back your wife or husband and you can’t change who you are. As I hear tales that only men were allowed to drink, how did it come that even women drink? One of the problems

with a woman drinking is that even your own offsprings will disrespect and treat you like trash as if you never produced them. So if you are disrespected by your own child, how about your neighbour? Another problem is that you get hated especially when you are a mother. When you are drinking alcohol, you can do shameful and unforgivable sins. Some men and women drink so as to have fun. But you aren’t having fun;

instead you are encouraging your own kids to do the same. Nowadays, majority of the youth drink alcohol, party every day, and do bad things. Many parents ask themselves where their children learn this from but they forget that they too drink alcoholic beverages. Say no to excessive alcohol drinking and live a happy life.

Other favorite artistes of mine are: Arianna Grande, Charlie Puth, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Korede Bello, Don Jazzy and many others. Music is also interesting because of the competition to get awards like, Grammy award, BET award MTV award and others.

My second favorite form of music is hip-hop. It is also interesting to listen to because it makes you curious to know what they are singing. Most hip hop artistes are as fast as a hare “because they have to speak their lyrics quickly. Some of the hip-hop artistes are Eminem – the world’s fastest rapper, Drake, Big Sean, Iggy Azalea Nicki Minaj and many others. SOIL

S

oil is a medium in which plants fix their roots to grow. Soil is made up of three types. These are: loam soil, clay soil and sand soil. Loam soil is suitable for crop growth because it contains a lot of humus and it is well aerated. Loam soil also has a dark colour which helps to absorb starch. Loam soil is a mixture of sand soil and clay soil. Loam soil also contains living organisms which help in decomposition of organic matter. Clay soil is used for pottery and art and craft work. It is suitable for art and craft because it is sticky and has a fine texture. It is not suitable for plant growth because it is poorly aerated and has no humus. Sand soil is suitable for building and construction. It has many air spaces and little or no humus. This makes it not suitable for plant growth. In fact, Soil is so important that without it, there wouldn’t’ be plant life. And without plant life animal life wouldn’t be there. INEZA SABRINA P.6 Mercury

I eventually pulled out of the class singing sessions completely because I felt I was unfit. One day at our church, I decided to try out my misfortune in practice with others. It was all the same but the Church choir trainer was patient with me and later blended my hoarse voice and began singing alto tune. To everybody’s

surprise, I completely fitted in the church choir as well as the school choir in which I had been considered unfit. I took keyboard lessons to continue developing my music talent. I now comfortably sing along popular musicians. My favorite songs with the keyboard are; All in all, Above all, Company and Jehovah. My inspiring famous musicians are: Arianna Grande, Rihana, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Justin Bieber, Charlie Puth, Karijobe and Bangirana worship band. I intend to become a famous

lcohol was my breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. It was my master. I couldn’t settle or have peace. I was a mad, crazy girl under its control. Everyone would talk to me but I was happy and contented with that kind of life. Sometimes, I could walk down street dancing “bend over” while in pampers and a bra. I was enjoying life for all those crazy years. Don’t you think it’s crazy? I mean, what do you think a normal person walking down the street wearing pampers and a bra? I think it’s actually crazy.

I went to the hospital for treatment and the doctor told me that I had a kidney cancer. On 17th may 2000, I kicked the bucket. Many people cried but there was nothing to be done. I advise the next new generation to take care of themselves because things out there are not good. And we can do this by fighting against alcoholism. Byararangyiye, Alcowoman 1990-2000
