There is nothing more heavy metal than a group of Black Sabbath fans performing hard rock songs with a frickin word championship wrestler as a front man. Yes that’s right, its Atlanta’s badass heavy metal band Fozzy, and no it’s not fronted by the bear from the Muppets, but by WWE’s finest Chris Jericho. Once upon a time they were a cover band called Fozzy Osbourne, but six studio albums later Fozzy are rock legends in their own right and they’re back on the road doing what they do best – blowing our minds with the fury of rock! With the release of Do You Wanna Start A War we’re pretty excited to hear the masterpiece live. But first up we have the pleasure of chatting to the legend Chris Jericho before Fozzy’s tour hits the UK! Jericho doesn’t only put on an outstanding performance in the ring but when he’s alongside band mates Rich Ward, Frank Fontsere, Billy Grey, Jeff Rouse there is no stopping these metallers. It is gonna be a knockout folks!

Firstly how would you describe Fozzy in 3 words? Metallica meets Journey Starting up as a cover band, did you always plan on making your own material and did you ever expect it to become so popular? Well I think every band starts as a covers band really. It was way back probably around 2010 when we started to realise the full potential of Fozzy and make it a priority rather than a side project and to put everything into it that we had. I mean, you can be the biggest band in the world but if you don’t show up, you’re not going to make it anywhere. It’s a lot of work but the success is really gratifying. What’s the most surprising song Fozzy has covered?

DEVON MUSIC | MARCH 2015

We’ve had a few over the albums. A while back we were sitting backstage in Leipzig on the Anthrax tour and the iPod was on shuffle and ABBA’s SOS came on and we thought that it would make a great and unexpected song to cover for a b-side. Then when we recorded it, it had such a cool vibe that we thought why waste it as a b-side? So it’s on the album and now it might even be a single. But you’ve gotta do something different with it, you know? That’s what Marilyn Manson did with Sweet Dreams, or what Limp Bizkit did with Faith – take it outside of the box. You could cover a Judas Priest song or whatever because it’s a great song but you’re never going to play it as good as Judas Priest so what’s the point? But if you take a great song and give it your own spin then you can really breathe new life into it.

FOZZY

How have fans reacted to the latest release Do You Wanna Start A War? It’s been our highest charting record so far, particularly in the States and we’re still going with it. We’ll be adding more songs and people have really been going nuts for it. If you come to a show on the tour and you haven’t got WAR then you’re going to hear a lot of new songs but they’re pretty catchy and easy to get into and they get great reactions from the crowds. Playing them live is what it’s all about. We’re pretty excited to have Fozzy in the UK, what can fans expect from this tour? This will be the biggest headline tour we’ve ever done, in some of the biggest rooms. We’ve always had a great reputation over in the UK and a great relationship with our UK fanbase. We really feel like the UK is our second home. We know things will be really energetic and really electric and we expect a lot of participation from the crowd and we always get it. I’d say 99.9% of the people who come to a Fozzy show will leave feeling like they had a lot of fun. We are the show. Y’know we don’t have gimmicks or huge pyros and things exploding from the drummer’s head or whatever, we just give it all we’ve got and have fun and the crowd always bring it, so we’re excited to get back to the UK. Do you think that your experience performing in the ring is similar to what you do on stage with the band? Well it’s all part of being a performer. You’ve got to have a connection with the audience, whether that’s in the wrestling ring or on stage. When I got into wrestling I always said I wanted to be the rock n roll frontman. I wanted to be the Paul Stanley or David Lee Roth of wrestling and I included elements of them in my wrestling character. And then I took elements of that into Fozzy. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, whether it’s wrestling, music, stand-up comedy or Shakesperian theatre you’ve got to know your audience and grab them. If you can do that, then you’ll always have a job! Do you have a most memorable gig or is there one show you’d like to play again? Oooh, probably last year’s Download. 2014 was the first time we played the main stage and even though it was quite early there were so many people there, I think around 40,000 and people were just going crazy. Festivals in general are just legendary and you always want to turn up and destroy and when the crowd are so into it and there’s so many of our Fozzy family out there it’s a great connection. And we really have them to thank for getting us to the main stage. We’ve got a lot of honourable and loyal fans and we never take that for granted. You’re a very busy man, but what do you like to do in your spare time?

DEVON MUSIC | MARCH 2015

I think sometimes it seems like I’m busier than I am because the things I do come in sections so when I’m not on tour, or not in the ring I’m just hanging out with my kids and my family and doing normal family stuff. You’ve got to strike the balance. Being as successful as you, in both music and wrestling, what advice would you give to others who dream of making it as artists? Follow your dreams and believe in yourself and don’t ever listen to people who say you can’t do stuff. Whatever it is you wanna do – some people want to be rockstars or wrestlers but if you want to be a lawyer or a doctor, then do that and don’t let people tell you you can’t. When I was a kid I told everyone I wanted to be a wrestler AND a rockstar so I had two dreams for them to laugh at and I don’t think you’d have picked me out of a line up as being the kid that would get to do both. People thought I was crazy and I’ve done them both. So believe in yourself and follow your dreams. Do You Wanna Start A War features guest vocals from Christie Cook and Steel Panther’s Michael Starr, how was it working with them? We love to have friends come and join us on our records and we don’t do it for the stunt – if it fits the song, then we’ll always go for it because their involvement makes it a better song. We toured Australia with Steel Panther and Michael came up to me and said ‘I want to be on the next Fozzy record’ and Tonite really fit with his vibe. They’ve got a lot of jokes but they’re such great guys and all such fantastic musicians. In fact, once he was done recording his parts we gave him more lines to sing because we loved what he’d done so much. It really adds a lot to the song. And Christie we’ve known for years. She’s an unbelievable singer. We wanted Unstoppable to be a duet and when we looked around for who we might want to come in on it we thought, why not keep it in the Fozzy family and she really did an incredible job on it. It really brings a different element to it. Is there anyone left that you’d like to collaborate with? I don’t have a list. We don’t really work like that. It’s more about what someone can bring to the song – you have to start with the song, not the other way around. We don’t sit there and think ‘I want Slash to play on my record, which song can he play on?’ we just look at people we know and love and try to keep it all in the Fozzy family and it works pretty great. In the wake of Northern Ireland blues and hard rockers The Answer’s upcoming jaunt around the UK and release of their fifth studio album ‘Raise a Little Hell’ (out on the 9th March) we welcomed the opportunity to chat with vocalist Cormac Neeson about the new album, touring and to see if he had any gems of advice for new bands trying to break through…. Your new album ‘Raise a Little Hell’ is out soon, what can fans expect? It’s a record that sounds like we’re having a good time. It sounds like a good rock n roll album, with a bit more light and shade than perhaps our last record. There’s a few more flavours thrown in, it’s quite diverse, but at the same time there’s a freedom to it. We wanted to make this record for us. It sounds like a given of course, but when you’re making an album it’s usual that the record company get into your ear, or the managers get inside your head, or even you know your fans telling you what they loved about the last record and what they didn’t like. You can let all that background noise upset you, and in the past we have maybe done so but this time round we just came in and totally just cleared our minds, had a good time, made a record and the end result is a pretty damn good album if you ask me. It sounds to us like it might have a classic 70s rock

devON MUSIC | MARCH 2015

vibe to it. Do you ever wish you’d be born a bit earlier? No, not at all, I’m very happy to be where I am at this point in time but I do listen to a lot of 70s rock n roll music. I think you can definitely hear those influences permeating through this album. This is our fifth album, when we put our first album out a lot of people would have said it reminded them of Led Zeppelin. After that we kinda almost reacted against that tag a little bit and when we were recording album number 2 ‘Everyday Demons’ we asked ourselves ‘what would Led Zeppelin do? Well then let’s not do that. That was good, that was constructive. It sent us down the path of trying to find our own sound and our own identity, and not pay too much tribute to the bands from 40 odd years ago. Influences are not something you should be ashamed of, you need to strike that balance between letting bands like Led Zeppelin and Free and The Who permeate through your music but also establishing

THE ANSWER

something that is original. If you’re a rock n roll band especially you gotta be original and carve out your own little niche. I think we’ve really struck the balance this time around. It might have taken us 5 attempts but we got there in the end. ‘Raise a Little Hell’ was recorded in Spain. Do you think the change of location had any effect on the whole album process? It all fed into the project. We picked Spain cos we knew it would be a little bit different and a little bit wacky. When we arrived at the studio our producers informed us that the annual fiesta was about to kick off. It was a week of bull running in the morning, drinking all afternoon, bull fights in the early evening and then more drinking for another 12 hours. Round the clock partying. Our days would start with going to the town hall and watching all these crazy Spanish people running from bulls through the town, and then we’d go and have a couple of beers with the locals and get into the spirit of things and then we’d go and work for 12 hours, and then go back out again like midnight that evening, relax and talk about the songs we’d recorded that day. But the entire town had been drinking that entire time so by the time we’d finished our work...the carnage, you wouldn’t believe. It was like St Patrick’s Day, in Dublin, for 7 days in a row. It played a large part in the flavour of the record. You’re running a fan voted poll for the set list for your upcoming tour, are there any songs you’re particularly hoping get chosen? I really don’t mind, but it’s interesting to see some of the stuff people come back with, some really bizarre b-sides we’d almost forgotten about. It’s nice to know people pick up on some of them along the way. The more obscure the better. You’re pulling some great bands out to support you on the tour. Having been given the opportunity to support AC/DC when you were starting out, is it important to you guys to give other bands similar opportunities? Yeah, very much so. We’re taking a band, Bad Touch, out on the road with us. They’re a young band trying to find their way, in similar circles that we’ve been working in. It’s nice to be in a position where we can give opportunities to bands to play to bigger audiences, and it’s great to see them getting up there every night, playing with a hunger and passion for it, and giving it everything they’ve got. It just reminds you of your first ever tour. Again, it’s good to keep getting reminded of that.

devON MUSIC | MARCH 2015

What do you think are the biggest challenges facing new artists today, and have you got any brilliant advice? I suppose the biggest challenge is that no one’s really paying for any music anymore, so it’s getting to a level where you can tour and make enough money where you can do so. When we were starting out if you had potential a record label would take you to a studio and give you money to make your first record, and promote your first tour and really give you a bit of a kick start. We just got the tail end of that but there’s just not enough support around anymore. Record labels only back you if you’re a sure thing, with the odd exception. There are a few independent labels who will take a punt but they don’t have as much money as a major would have done back in the day, so it’s hard to move from the grass roots to a level where you’ve got a chance of it being your job. You have to pull out all the stops, and make sure you make yourself available to get those breaks. It’s still all about building it from the ground up but you gotta be really good to get anybody to really notice you. The advice I would give is to picture yourself in 20 years’ time and make sure you really want to do it, and if you do, to make sure you’re damn good at it. What is it you love so much about touring? I just love getting up on stage and giving it everything I’ve got it. It’s a real release for me to jump about like a lunatic and scream my lungs off for an hour and a half. It levels me out. I think I’m a much easier person to deal with after a tour cos I’ve been able to get rid of all my pent up emotion and aggression. What’s 2015 going to be about for The Answer? It’s gonna be about getting out on the road and promoting our new album. Hopefully the gigs are going to be bigger and better. We always try to keep moving forward in this band. We’ve got a really good record full of fantastic songs. We think our fans are really gonna like it but we really hope we can win over some new ones in the process as well. So, a lot of touring. We’re doing the UK, Europe, America, back for festivals in the summer and then back to America again. It’s gonna be busy but it’s gonna be a lot of fun too. Words: Marianne Harris

Where’s the weirdest place that inspiration for a song has struck? Probably an aeroplane toilet!!! Because there’s absolutely nothing you can do in flight it’s an amazing time to get creative! Maybe not in the toilet though! Ha! What album/song are you ashamed to admit you secretly love? It has to be Lionel Richie!! I think he’s everyone’s secret!? If you were a fly on the wall, who would you spy on? I’d love to be in Motorheads dressing room just to see if Lemmy really does drink that much Jack Daniels!! What’s your favourite ice cream flavour? Chocolate chip for sure!! What’s your favourite song to play live? I really enjoy Renegade as it’s probably the most personal song on the album. Who would you rather tour with: One Direction, Lady Gaga or Cher? Cher every time! Plus I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for her after seeing her on that war ship as a teenager!!! If you could be a superhero which one would you be and why? Superman! Flying, running at lightning speed and X-ray vision!! What more do you need?! Would you rather fight an elephant sized spider or a 1000 spider sized elephants? 1000 spider sized elephants!! I hate spiders and love elephants! What’s the worst thing about being on tour? Driving the van!! How many motorbikes do you own and which is your favourite? I only own my 2007 championship winning Honda Fireblade so that has to be the one! If you had to cover one of Katie’s (Melua - James’ wife) songs, which one would it be? Spiders Web definitely! It’s an amazing song! Why should we check out your show? A lot of the feedback we get at our live shows is how obvious it is to see we all love what we do and it means a lot to us on stage.

Black Star Riders kick off their UK and Ireland tour with the mighty Europe this month and we couldn’t be more excited for their Exeter show on the 15th. A reincarnation of the current Thin Lizzy line up and described as “the next step in the evolution of the Thin Lizzy story” there’s new music and, as you can imagine, an excellent stage show from these legends of rock. Fear not diehard Thin Lizzy fans, Lizzy will still be performing and touring, however in 2012 the band agreed to release their new material as Black Star Riders as a mark of respect for original front man, the late Phil Lynott. So, armed with new material from recent album ‘The Killer Instinct’ we’re expecting something a bit special from Black Star Riders and we caught up with lead singer Ricky Warwick to tell us a little bit more about how this latest album was put together… Why did you decide to use producer Nick Raskulinecz and what did he bring to the writing/ recording process? Because he has won three Grammy’s is the short answer. We talked about two or three producers for this album, but weren’t overly excited about them then our drummer suggested Nick and played me some Alice In Chains and we said that’s the guy. Do you write ideas and riffs continually whilst on the road or designate a certain amount of time for writing when the previous album cycle was over? I guess yeah it’s continuous, There is no certain way of doing it. I’ve written a couple of riffs whilst in bed, it’s all in the moment and when it strikes you, grab your guitar or a pen and paper and you start writing it and hopefully it doesn’t stop with that riff or line. Which songs in particular are you proud of the most and why? I’m pretty proud of all of them. It was hard deciding which ones to cut to be honest with you.

DORSET MUSIC | MARCH 2015

So Robbie Crane has joined the band, was he a part of the writing process and does he bring a different dynamic to Marco? So Marco decided to leave at the end of the U.S as he had other things he wanted to do, It was all amicable and we love Marco, he is a formidable bass player. Robbie came in and I’d say he is more of an aggressive player and personally, with no disrespect to Marco, I feel it better suits Black Star Riders. He is a very funny guy and a real pleasure to have around. We are very, very happy that Robbie is in the band. We’re excited you’re about to tour the UK with Swedish legends Europe. Are you planning on any festival appearances during the summer too? We are looking forward to playing with our friends in Europe. We have known and got on with them for ages, and of course we are playing festivals and lots more touring too. Words: Mike James

DRIFTED Quite possibly one of the heaviest bands ever to lumber out of the Devon music scene, Drifted are a serious force to be reckoned with. By combining deathcore with elements of groove, a hint of technicality and breakdowns so slow you’ll want to punch your eldest relative square in the jaw, this Exeter Quintet have cemented themselves a solid foundation within the local metal scene. After ripping apart the south-west with their debut Ep “No Front Teeth” last summer, we were eager to see what these guys had lined up next... Who are you and what do you do in the band? Hi! I’m Ben and I’m the Drummer of Drifted. How did you guys drift together? Ha! ‘drift’...We basically did just that: Harry, Jay and Corey (Vocals and Guitars respectively) had been friends for a good few years, and had always been interested in starting a band together. Myself and Johnny were both good acquaintances with Harry because we had all gigged together in previous bands, one day he popped up asking if we wanted to start a band, and here we are now! How did you pick your band name? Sadly we have no story to our name, we simply chose a name we collectively decided would suit and adhere to what we would be doing musically, it’s short and easy to remember too, which is a bonus! What’s been your biggest achievement so far? Probably recording ‘No Front Teeth’. Being our first release we weren’t sure how well things were going to go but they could

not have gone any better. Sam Brennan (The Eyes Of A Traitor, Heart In Hand) was a pleasure to work with as a producer.

You’re off on tour in April, tell us a bit about that….. So we’re doing our first tour! Pretty exciting. We’re going to be doing a circuit of the UK with our close friends in Occulus and Half Cut. It’s pretty nerve-wracking, but we can’t wait. If you could go on tour with any band, who would it be and why? Quite literally any band! We’re so new to the game and there are so many brilliant bands out there at the moment it’s pretty hard to pin point one. I guess we’ll have to find out for ourselves won’t we...? Do you have any other talents other than music? Me? No. I’m absolutely terrible at everything else other than music! I can’t speak for the rest of the band, but I know for a fact Corey is a sick skater. Tell us 5 things you think we should know about Drifted… 1. We have new material coming out VERY soon. 2. We are quite possibly the most immature band in existence. 3. We are drop tuning our guitars even further down for our new material... 4. despite this, it’s actually more technical and dynamic than our previous work. 5. people have broken bones at our gigs. I needn’t say more. Why should we come check out your live show? If you enjoy getting beaten up by everyone else in the crowd to the most disgusting slams you have ever heard in your life, then you’ll love us.
