Scarlatti: Complete Keyboard Sonatas, Vol. 29

Domenico Scarlatti’s 555 keyboard sonatas were most probably written for his patron, Princess Maria Barbara of Portugal. Her love of music leads us to assume that she was suitably appreciative of these extraordinary gifts from her teacher and friend. The earlier sonatas are rooted in the Italian style, with the Sonata in G major, K. 103 notable for its eyebrow-raising lurches between major and minor tonalities. The influence of Spanish flamenco guitar can be heard in exotic embellishments and spicy harmonies. Scarlatti’s astonishing originality can be found throughout this entire collection. Brahms & Schubert / Alexandre Kantorow

“In his performance Kantorow never tries to underplay that bravura element; if anything he underlines the brashness of some of the piano writing, revelling in its virtuoso demands, especially in the chordal writing of the scherzo, and the explosive opening to the finale, though never neglecting the moments of lyrical tenderness that are few and far between in the sonata.” – The Guardian (BIS)

1SACD# BIS-2660 $21.99

Wagner, Swensen: Ring Odyssey [2 CDs]

“Lorin Maazel’s arrangement Ring without Words is a seamless alternative to so-called ‘bleeding chunks’ of concert-hall Wagner excerpts. And now conductor Joseph Swensen has a non-epic Ring (one of several out there) that also includes chorus and three singers in multiple, hard-to-cast roles. If Wagner has ever been sensible, it’s here.” – Gramophone (Alpha) 2CD# ALPHA1072 $29.99 $23.99

Puccini: Love Affairs / Jonas Kaufmann

“Call it operatic speed dating as the tenor Jonas Kaufmann embarks on a whirlwind romance with six different sopranos. In fact, because these sopranos were six busy women trying to sync diaries with one busy man, there were six ‘overdub dates’ that took place across Europe; in other words, the sessions when Kaufmann and partner recorded their vocals.” – Gramophone (Sony) 1CD# 19802806702 $13.98

Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 – Bates: Resurrexit

Schubert: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 8 / Scottish Chamber Orchestra

“Haydn and Beethoven are the clear models for Schubert’s first four symphonies, but the fifth, written in 1816, reflects the composer’s newfound enthusiasm for Mozart. Schubert scholar Brian Newbould, who’s excellent booklet article accompanies this release, feels that 1816 could well be called Schubert’s “Mozart year.” – The Classic Review (Linn)

1CD# CKD748 $20.99

Lambert: Music for Brass & Organ

“The two works for brass ensemble make the strongest impression. The Partita for brass quintet is ‘a divertimento-like compilation of earlier material for alternatively scored forces, recomposed idiomatically for standard quintet formation’. Two reworkings of choral pieces appeared on the earlier Toccata disc. The performances are first rate.” – MusicWeb (Toccata Classics) 1CD# TOCC0718 $20.99

Bach: Transcriptions / Julian Martin; Olivier Fortin

“Bach’s music for the type of flute we now call the recorder lamentably eschews the sonata genre. Seeking to redress this situation through the art of transcription are two long-standing musical partners: recorder-player Julien Martin and harpsichordist Olivier Fortin. In so doing, they present a selection including sonatas for transverse flute, violin and organ.” – BBC Music (Alpha)

Choice

American Voices / Pacifica Quartet; Uniting Voices

“Affectionately and adroitly played, theirs is a very impressive performance indeed, with buoyantlysprung rhythms underscoring the folkish elements of this much oversubscribed work to the degree that virtually every bar sounds freshlyminted. Particularly memorable is the cellist’s winningly under-stated playing in the Lento slow movement.”

1CD# CDR 228 $19.99 $15.99

Sutton: Violin Concerto / Fenella Humphreys; BBC Philharmonic

“Adrian Sutton’s natural métier is the theatre, and even the Violin Concerto has an external programme which concerns a seagull and its appearance around various coastlines. The first movement begins dreamily with an eloquent long line for the soloist over gently lapping orchestral textures, and there’s contrast later in more rhythmic passages.” – BBC Music (Chandos)

1CD# CHAN 20349 $20.99

Chopin: Voyage / Yulianna Avdeeva

“Yulianna Avdeeva’s latest release comes 14 years after she won the XVI International Chopin Competition; it spotlights his late works, including the third piano sonata in B Minor. In the decade and a half span, she’s released a handful of albums featuring Bach to Mieczyslaw Weinberg—but a strong point of gravitation has always been Chopin.” – The Classic Review (Pentatone)

Brahms: Piano Concertos & Solo Piano [3 CDs]

Handel in Rome / Dunedin Consort; John Butt

“You could say that Rome was the making of Handel. Even if the youthful works he wrote there aren’t now among his best known, they show him beginning to create the kind of complex, involving and contradictory characters that would light up his later operas. Three of his cantatas here get the best of advocacy from the Dunedin Consort, conducted by John Butt.” – The Guardian (Linn)

Georges Prêtre – The SWR Recordings [8 CDs]

“Given the quality of the recording, playing and conducting and the selection of real masterpieces it makes for an enjoyable listen from start to finish for any listener.
