For the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the performances on November 26 and 27, 2021 in the Isarphilharmonie marked the beginning of a new chapter in its Mahler interpretation: with its designated new principal conductor Simon Rattle. The very long silence after the final chord was one of those “goosebump moments” that one goes to concerts for – and for which music is made in the first place. (BR Klassik)

Born in 1885, Alban Berg was one of the most significant composers of the Second Viennese School, whose output proved tremendously influential in the development of music in the 20th century. His Piano Sonata, Op. 1 was the fulfilment of a task set by Schoenberg to write non-vocal music. The Passacaglia, written between the sonata and World War I was only completed in short-score, and may have been intended to form part of a larger work. Both pieces are recorded here in skillful orchestrations by Sir Andrew Davis. (Chandos)

“The debut disc suggests a very promising future for the young Ciccolini Prize winner. The way she plays Liadov’s pieces shows a real love for these tiny gems, and so does her rendition of Medtner’s Sonata
The latter is as fine a performance as I have heard. She is a considerable talent, and I hope to hear more from her soon.” – MusicWeb – (Divine Art)

Haydn: Complete Piano Trios, Vol. 1
“Trio Gaspard’s new album marks the beginning of their ambitious complete Haydn piano trio cycle. Not many have attempted this largescale project, though precedents include the Beaux Arts Trio and a period recording by the Van Swieten Trio. The sprightly Allegro Moderato of the A Major Trio shows each member of the ensemble creating clean lines that sync well.”

Brahms: Complete Symphonies [3 CDs]
“Adam Fischer adds even more buoyancy by paying scrupulous attention to every detail of the rhythmic articulation; he generally favours quick tempo too, though it’s rare that they seem unduly fast – the finale of the Second sets off at quite a lick, for instance, yet never seems rushed, while the finale of the Fourth loses none of its cumulative power by always being kept on the move.”

Lost & Found / Sean Shibe
“Here’s another bonkers-at-firstglance, brilliantly curated album from the guitarist Sean Shibe. He describes Lost and Found as “an emporium of curiosities”, and all the exhibits are for electric guitar. That doesn’t mean all the music is modern. Some of it skirts perilously close to chill-out, or would do if Shibe let it: instead, whenever we might be lulled into inactive listening Shibe provides something subversive.”

Quantz: Trio Sonatas / Ensemble Labirinto Armonico
The Trio Sonatas featured in this recording are early works, and skilfully mesh this theatrical Italian style with formal German structure and counterpoint, and in doing so consistently present an intricate and well-balanced sonic canvas. Wagner: Tristan und Isolde [3 CDs]
“Although this new release enshrines a performance now almost a decade old, it seems to mark an important watershed in the conductor’s work with this score. WelserMöst’s Tristan accompaniments are faster, louder and more committed, more involved with the blood of the drama. There is also an unashamed glorying in the sheer beauty of much of this score and his orchestra’s ability to perform that.”

Verdi: La Traviata [2 CDs]
“Verdi’s La Traviata is certainly not under-represented on CD, but it is many a moon since a brand-new studio recording arrived. Walter Gieseking (1895–1956) has long been regarded as one of the supreme interpreters of Debussy, his recordings having achieved almost definitive status. But it’s generally his later recordings from the early 1950s which have been reissued time and time again. His first Columbia recordings, mostly made in the 1930s, are much less known, yet many critics have regarded them as even finer than the remakes. (APR)
