Violinist Rachel Barton Pine’s 26th recording for Cedille Records, Dependent Arising, reveals surprising confluences between classical and heavy metal music by pairing Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 77 with Earl Maneein’s Dependent Arising — Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, performed with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under the baton of Tito Muñoz. The album explores connections between modern classical music and heavy metal and showcases Pine’s unique journey with these two seemingly disparate genres. (Cedille)

Herrmann: Suite from Wuthering Heights
Bernard Herrmann is widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s most important composers, responsible for more than fifty film scores, and noted for his collaborations with Orson Welles and, later, with Alfred Hitchcock. Welles was unofficially involved with Robert Stevenson’s film of Jane Eyre in the 1940s, and it was Welles that suggested Herrmann as composer for the project. (Chandos)
1SACD# CHSA 5337 $21.99
Bruckner: Symphony No. 8 / Paavo Järvi; Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich
Anton Bruckner called his Symphony No. 8 in C minor a ‘mystery’; others have seen it as an ‘apocalyptic’ work. For Paavo Järvi, it is the composer’s ‘most unusual symphony’ and the ‘pinnacle’ of his symphonic output. In the history of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, the Eighth Symphony occupies a special place, since it was the first Bruckner the orchestra performed. (Alpha)
1CD# ALPHA987 $18.99

The most important work on this recording is the Concerto for Violin and String Quartet, a harsh, dense work that places great demands on the musicians. Liszt: Transcendental Etudes / Haochen Zhang
The Transcendental Études form a cycle of twelve pieces whose composition began in 1826 and was completed in 1851. These études are among the most difficult works ever written for the piano. Together with Chopin’s Études, they serve as a basis for piano technique and had a significant influence on subsequent piano music, most notably that of Debussy, Rachmaninov, Bartók, and Ligeti. (BIS)

Noskowski: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2
Few listeners know much, if anything, about Zygmunt Noskowski (1846–1909). And yet, for most of the 19th century, he was the primary exponent of modern symphonic music in Poland. Antoni Wit, Noskowski’s successor at the helm of the Warsaw Philharmonic helps out his lateromantic colleague – just as he has already done with the music Zygmunt Stojowski on a previous Capriccio recording. (Capriccio)
Mozart: Serenades / Mozarteumorchester Salzburg
Founded in 1841 under the participation of Constanze Mozart, the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg today enjoys the highest reputation worldwide for its lively and styleconscious Mozart interpretations. Glass: Patientia
A theme that violinist Sara Övinge aimed to pursue in the project was the juxtaposition of the electronic and the organic. Philip Glass’s 2nd Piano Concerto is arranged for synthesiser and strings, a kind of updated version of Vivaldi’s string orchestra with continuo. Where previous recordings have gone for an electronic sound resembling the baroque harpsichord, Sara creates a more electro-acoustic soundscape. (Lawo)

On this newest endeavour, the Bogota´ Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Joachim Gustafsson, turns its attention towards Danish composer August Enna (1859–1939) with renderings of two of his charming orchestral works. 1CD# 8224753 $15.99
Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 15 & 20 / Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli
Here, Michelangeli presents a life-affirming, even vigorous Mozart with almost Olympian pride. His manner of playing is always forward-pushing, at times boisterously passionate. In his interpretation there is no exaggerated sensitivity, no fiddling with sound, no over-reflectiveness and, in particular, no sentimentality in the slow movements. (SWR Classic)

Much of the music is in Vivaldi’s best sombre G minor tone.” – Gramophone (Alto Music)
