Late Spring 2022

Complete Symphonies and Dances / Sir Malcolm Arnold [6 CDs]

This set arguably constitutes the best series of recordings in the Naxos catalog – ‘performances of uniformly high quality made in the presence of the composer and recorded with more realistic balances and cleaner textures than any of their rivals.’ (ClassicsToday.com) That was the response to our initial release of British composer Malcolm Arnold’s complete symphonies. Here is that compendium again, marking the 100th anniversary of Arnold’s birth and with the bonus recordings of his popular series of regional orchestral Dances. (Naxos) 6CD# 8506041 $36.99

Prokofiev: The Symphonies [5 CDs]

Celebrating the 130th anniversary of Sergei Prokofiev (1891–1953), the present box set brings together recordings of his seven symphonies made by Andrew Litton and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra between 2012 and 2017. The symphonies appear with their original couplings, including the popular suites from the film score to Lieutenant Kijé and the ballet The Love for Three Oranges. Released on separate discs, the series has received acclaim from international reviewers, variously highlighting the orchestra “Bergen Philharmonic plays gorgeously…” – ClassicsToday (BIS) 5SACD# BIS-2594 $59.99

Bernstein: Mass / Alan Titus, Norman Scribner Choir [2 CDs]

When Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis asked Bernstein to compose a piece for the 1971 inauguration of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., he was eager to honor the occasion with a new, large-scale work because he knew he had always wanted “to compose a service of one sort or another.” Bernstein made a surprising choice: the Roman Catholic Mass. But instead of a straightforward, purely musical setting of the Latin liturgy, he created a broadly eclectic theatrical event by placing the 400-year-old religious rite into a tense, dramatic dialog with music and lyrics of the 20th century vernacular. Kitajenko conducts Tchaikovsky Orchestral Works [2 CDs]

This compilation brings together popular orchestral works and ballet music by Tchaikovsky. Dmitrij Kitajenko and the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne, of which he has been Honorary Conductor since 2009, have recorded the complete symphonies by Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. These recordings have been awarded with numerous international prizes and are considered important reference recordings. Their recording of Tchaikovsky’s opera Iolanta in 2015 caused a sensation, and it received the ‘Opera of the Year’ Award of the International Classical Music Awards. (Oehms Classics) 2CD# OC 1903 $23.99

Beyond the Music / Marian Anderson [15 CDs]

Beyond the Music is a special 15-CD edition celebrating contralto Marian Anderson, the first African-American singer at the Met. Along with the first-ever complete release of her legendary Farewell Recital at Constitution Hall in 1964, many recordings appear here on CD for the first time. 72 works are appearing on CD for the first time, 9 recordings previously unreleased. The 228-page coffee-table book is richly illustrated with numerous photos, facsimiles and full discographical notes. It is a homage to the artistic life of a singer “one is privileged to hear only once in a hundred years” (Toscanini) and who left us a legacy of humanity, generosity, talent, and faith. (Sony) 15CD# 19439836492 $99.99

Haydn: Great Choral Works [5 CDs]

Joseph Haydn is regarded as the “father of the symphony” and the “father of the string quartet” for his more than 100 symphonies and almost 70 string quartets. Haydn also produced numerous operas, masses, concertos, piano sonatas and other compositions. His oratorios The Creation and The Seasons, both composed in the last decade of Haydn’s active compositional life, are his most widely known and admired choral compositions today, just as they were in his lifetime. Recordings from some of Haydn’s most formidable interpreters are showcased on this extensive release, including the Bach Collegium Stuttgart, Kammerchor Stuttgart, Helmuth Rilling, and more. Modernism. Multiculturism. Multi-tuning. Lockdown. These are among the elements that bind the works on The Solo Album by award winning cellist Christoph Croisé, who took the opportunity of 2020’s coronavirus isolation to work intensively on a variety of solo works and also turn his hand to composition. At the heart of the album is Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály’s epic Sonata, the first major work for solo cello after the suites by Johann Sebastian Bach. (Avie)

Queen Elisabeth Competition 2021 / Various [4 CDs]

Haydn: Die Schöpfung (The Creation) [2 CDs]

In this 4 album-box set you will find the 6 laureates of the 2021 Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition, that saw Frenchman Jonathan Fournel win First Prize; you can enjoy his performance in Brahms’ Second Concerto with the Belgian National Orchestra, as well as the whole of his recital in the semi-finale. These artists, who tomorrow perhaps will appear on the world’s leading concert platforms, can be discovered here in their first ever recordings. (QEC)

Inspired by hearing performances of Handel’s oratorios during his visits to London, Haydn composed Die Schöpfung (‘The Creation’) in 1798. Through a series of accompanied recitatives, arias, duets and choruses, the music depicts the creation of the universe and the carefree existence of Adam and Eve. Haydn drew on the full complement of his symphonic and vocal prowess which reach peaks of almost operatic intensity. (Dynamic )

With the first of these “Apponyi” quartets, the Leipzig String Quartet continues its Haydn series and presents another remarkable milestone in the quartet repertoire. Although popular with dilettantes, the Op. 74 quartets go beyond the limits of what can be performed by amateurs. The first violin in particular repeatedly attracts attention with virtuoso passages, but the other voices – just listen to the finale of the C major quartet – are also demanded to do a great deal. (MDG)

This third volume in Fanny Clamagirand and Vanya Cohen’s acclaimed survey of Saint-Saëns’s music for violin and piano focuses on transcriptions. Popular works such as Danse macabre and Havanaise are included, alongside the world premiere recording of Air de Dalila – a transcription made by the composer in 1918 for the exclusive use of Queen Elisabeth of Belgium. Releases Kapustin: Piano Concerto No. 4, Double Concerto / Frank Dupree, Rosanna Philippens

New Mozart / Reinhard Goebel and Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg

Drawing parallels to another famous composer of symphonic jazz, Kapustin is occasionally considered a ‘Russian in Gershwin’s clothing’. Most of his compositions are influenced by jazz and expertly combine jazz elements with those of the tradition from Bach to Prokofiev and Stravinsky. The aesthetic diversity with which classical garb and the stylistic devices of jazz are amalgamated in Kapustin’s output could be taken as the byword for all three compositions included on this recording. (Capriccio)

With New Mozart, conductor Reinhard Goebel, the “tireless discoverer” (Rondo), once again shows what treasures continue to be discovered in the music archives: For his new project with the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, he deals with musical treasures that revolve around the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The first album already presents a world premiere recording: the orchestral version of the serenade “Gran Partita” KV 361 by Mozart. (Sony)

Four Visions of France – French Cello Concertos / Daniel Moller-Schott

Orchestral Works from Varese, Ligeti, Lutoslawski, Baldini

Virtuoso cellist Daniel MüllerSchott presents his Four Visions of France through perceptive interpretations of five works for cello and orchestra by Saint-Saëns, Fauré, Lalo and Honegger. (Orfeo)

This is an album featuring path-breaking works for orchestra and for violin and orchestra. Lutoslawski, Verese, and Ligeti certainly need no introduction. Conductor Christian Baldini is also a first-rate composer. Two superb violinists, Miranda Cuckson and Maximilian Haft are featured performers. “Christian Baldini brings symphonic revival” commented the Buenos Aires Herald on Baldini’s recent concerts at the Teatro Argentino. First Ladies – Three Romantic Violin Sonatas

The Italian pianist Filippo Gorini took advantage of the world health crisis to immerse himself in The Art of Fugue, Johann Sebastian Bach’s unfinished mystical masterpiece, noting: “The view that it should be seen solely as a theoretical marvel is misguided: as the counterpoints and canons evolve in formal complexity, so does their emotional tension, until the heartbreaking mystery of the unfinished Fuga XIV.” (Alpha)

The selected fugues are by composers such as W.F. Bach, Robert Schumann, Fréderic Chopin, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Russian composer Anton Arensky and contemporary composer Reinhard Febel. One could hardly intuit from these fresh and flowing violin sonatas the obstacles their female composers had to face – family opposition for Mel Bonis in France and Ethel Smyth in England, institutional conservatism for Elfrida Andrée in Sweden. These three sonatas – melodically expansive, rhythmically vivacious, harmonically warm – point to the musical riches that further exploration of their creators’ output will uncover. (Toccata)

This reissue of Brahms’ four symphonies is no exception to Sir Roger Norrington’s artistic credo of keeping as close as possible to the composer’s expectations. Among the main features – beside the ‘pure sound’ without vibrato – are the quick tempi. However, the overall timings left by the Brahms conductor von Bülow are so short, compared to today, that there can have been no very slow tempi in his interpretations. (SWR)

Orfeo honors Júlia Várady as one of the most important sopranos of the second half of the 20th century with the release of this 10 album boxed set ‘The Orfeo Recordings’ on the occasion of her 80th Anniversary. Dieterich Buxtehude’s chamber works today counts among the least known of his compositions. They were already forgotten soon after 1700, and this despite the fact that two third of Buxtehude’s chamber sonatas, unlike any other category in the composers creative output, were published during his lifetime. The publication of sonatas indicates that there was a market for this repertoire in the later 17th century. (Challenge)

This attractive set of 17 works for harp concertante by 16 composers chronicles the instrument’s arrival and increasing acceptance on the orchestral stage. Many of the 18th-century works included here feature the harp for extra-musical reasons or as an alternate instrument to a keyboard. Handel’s, later bundled in with his other Organ Concertos, was originally for harp, written to evoke the ancient sound of the lyre in his Alexander’s Feast. (Brilliant)

Heitor Villa-Lobos has been described as ‘the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music.’ Every aspect of Villa-Lobos’s remarkable inspiration is represented in these works, with Brazilian national rhythms and extremes of ambition in terms of scale and dramatic content, alongside neoClassical transparency and lyrical charm. These critically acclaimed performances from Sao Paulo are both idiomatic and expertly played. (Naxos)

Michael Haydn Edition [28 CDs]

An inspiration to Mozart and a teacher to composers such as Diabelli and Weber, Johann Michael Haydn was a respected and influential figure during his lifetime. The collection opens with Michael Haydn’s symphonies. The earliest symphonies included here, No.1 in C and No.1B in F, date from 1758 and display the youthful energy of a composer finding his feet. In comparison, the later symphonies demonstrate a greater understanding of the complexities of every instrument in the ensemble. (Brilliant)

Sergey Prokofiev’s seven symphonies are acknowledged as one of the major cycles of the 20th century, and these recordings with Marin Alsop and the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra have received widespread critical acclaim. Naxos American Classics Arthur Farwell – America’s Neglected Composer

Herrmann: Whitman (radio drama by Norman Corwin) / Post-Classical Ensemble

Arthur Farwell has been called the most neglected composer in American musical history. As the leader of the ‘Indianists’ movement, Farwell believed it was a democratic obligation of Americans of European descent to try to understand the indigenous Americans they displaced and oppressed, and merged Native American music and lore with Western concert forms. The performances here recorded originated at a landmark PostClassical Ensemble festival at Washington’s National Cathedral. (Naxos)

Steve Reich: Music for Two or More Pianos

Joan Tower: Strike Zones / Evelyn Glennie, Blair McMillan

1CD# 8559902

Bernard Herrmann was famous for his film scores, but he was also a leading figure in music for radio, to which he brought his inimitable palette of mood and sonority. Whitman, whose subject is Walt Whitman’s collection of poems Leaves of Grass, was a 1944 radio drama, a genre now much neglected but revived in this newly restored version. (Naxos)

Steve Reich is universally acknowledged as one of the foremost exponents of minimalism, arguably the most significant stylistic trend in late 20th-century music. This chronological survey shows how Reich’s innate curiosity has taken his work far beyond such musical boundaries. One of the first fruits of Reich’s creative quest is ‘Music for Two of More Pianos,’ in which the influence of Morton Feldman and jazz pianist Bill Evans can be heard. (Naxos)

Joan Tower is widely regarded as one of today’s most important American composers. The works heard here in their world premiere recordings are part of a growing legacy that one pundit has described as “The Power of Tower.” Strike Zones is tailor-made for percussionist Evelyn Glennie’s dazzling technique and impeccable musicianship. John Philip Sousa: Music for Wind Band, Vol. 21

Daugherty: Tales of Hemingway, American Gothic

This current volume of Sousa’s music for wind band presents three exceptional examples of Sousa’s musical creativity. Chris and the Wonderful Lamp is an enchanting retelling of the Aladdin legend, while Showing Off Before Company is a clever routine Sousa often used to open matinee concerts. The painstaking reconstruction of Sisterhood of the States allows us to hear the ‘ballet’ that incorporated music from each of the 48 states for a spectacular show in 1916. (Naxos)

GRAMMY Award-winning composer Michael Daugherty creates colorful musical portraits in this recording, featuring larger-than-life personalities drawn from 20th-century American culture. Tales of Hemingway is a dramatic cello concerto, evoking the turbulent life, adventures and literature of author Ernest Hemingway. American Gothic is a dynamic concerto for orchestra, reflecting on the creative world of Iowa artist Grant Wood. (Naxos)

Florence Price studied at the New England Conservatory, but it was in Chicago that her composing career accelerated. The concert in 1933 at which her Symphony No. 2 in E minor was premiered was the first time a major American orchestra had performed a piece written by an African American woman. Influenced by Dvořák and Coleridge-Taylor, she drew on the wellspring of Negro spirituals and vernacular dances, full of lyricism and syncopation. (Naxos)

It is indeed quite a leap in time from Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) to the Finnish composer Kalevi Aho, born in 1949 – yet he has included works for solo flute by both composers on this recording. There are also two important chamber works for a flute and piano duo which represent milestones in the repertoire. (Profil)

“Music is a reflection of society. For some listeners, it can be a sobering reminder of calamity. In contrast, some people find consolation in music and feed their being with its rhythm and beat. Coupling hope with mastery could be the combination that produces uncompromising societal transformation. We have programmed this music hoping to appeal to the mind, but not leaving the heart untouched.” (Jason Max Ferdinand) (Gia)

The composer Elie Siegmeister once declared of Langston Hughes (1902– 1967) that he was the “most musical poet of the twentieth century”. True or false, this judgement underscores the unquestionable facts that much of Hughes’s poetry lends itself fairly readily to musical setting, and that, for Hughes, music was perhaps the primary inspiration, other than the history and culture of African-Americans in general, for his writing. Organ Merulo: Organ Music [3 CDs]

Woyrsch: Complete Organ Music

Brilliant Classics presents a threedisc colleciton of organ works from Claudio Merulo (1533–1604). According to fellow organist and composer Costanzo Antegnati (1549–1624), Merulo was famous for ‘the sweet way he played’. In the 16th century the term ‘sweetness’ was mainly related to the practice of ‘diminution’, or ornamentation, and a ‘judicious breaking up of the figures’, so that the application of the coloratura might confer a personal and lively chiaroscuro effect. (Brilliant)

The German composer Felix Woyrsch was born in 1860 in Troppau but became prominent in the musical life of Altona, now part of Hamburg, as organist, choirmaster and teacher; he died there in 1944. Woyrsch’s late-Romantic organ music, with distant roots in Bach’s counterpoint, inhabits a harmonic world somewhere between Brahms and Reger, its dark colors reflecting the upheavals in the times through which he lived. Ernst Köhler: Organ Works Ernst Köhler numbers among the representatives of the so-called Wrocław organ school from the first half of the 19th century; this group of composers, whose oeuvre combines respect for the con trapuntal refinement of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music with the emotional aspects of the new Romantic trends and also heralds an apogee of synthesis; the most perfect embodiment of which was the organ and cantata-oratorio oeuvre of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. In Jazz Live at the Kurhaus 1967 / Dave Brubeck Quartet

Double The End of Melancholism / Christian Krischkowsky Quartet

Kaboom / Michael Meis 4Tet

Bands that are led by drummers are not as seldom as they once were, but still a somewhat rare affair. The quartet of drummer Christian Krischkowskyis already presenting its second album The End of Melancholism and illustrates the advantages of such an approach in nine pieces, seven of which are from Krischkowsky’s pen. Pieces like “Would You Dance With Me?” or “Football Evolution” are rhythmically challenging, without deliberately placing the drums in the foreground. (Double Moon)

Natural Flow is the name of the second album by Luxembourgian pianist Arthur Possing with his quartet, and the album title of course also defines the sound ideal of the band. Interpreting the standards from the Great American Songbook is considered by many to be the supreme discipline in jazz. Kaboom behind this picturesque title lies the explosive mixture created by the quartet of the Luxembourg drummer Michel Meis. This time the band has a guest on some of the songs: the French violinist’s Ceccaldi. Alisa Klein on the trombone merges as casually as unpredictably with the violin tone of Ceccaldi, and band leader Meis knows very well how much she is worth for the band. (Double Moon)

“We combine jazz tradition with electronics on the album, which is a very healthy mixture for me,” pianist Henning Neidhardt said, who gave the trio his name and composed most of the pieces. “We all grew up in the nineties and have no intention of denying that we have been influenced by that era.
