Tom & Will – Weelkes & Byrd 400 Years / The King's Singers; Fretwork

400 years ago, in 1623, England lost two of it's greatest composers: William Byrd and Thomas Weelkes. In a program marking this double anniversary, The King's Singers and Fretwork turn their focus to the bold personalities of these two men, Will and Tom. Bach & Pärt / Arabella Steinbacher

Arabella Steinbacher presents works for violin and orchestra by Johann Sebastian Bach and Arvo Pärt, together with violinist Christoph Koncz and the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester. Castelnuovo-Tedesco: Complete Italian Solo Guitar Music

Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco was first drawn to the guitar after meeting Andrés Segovia in Venice in 1932. The Variations á travers les siècles Op. 71 followed almost immediately. Over the course of the next seven years, CastelnuovoTedesco produced a string of equally successful pieces for the instrument. Most substantial is the four movement Guitar Sonata subtitled as a ‘Homage to Boccherini’: an elegant essay in neoclassicism which evokes the courtly elegance of Boccherini’s Guitar Quintets while sounding entirely true to CastelnuovoTedesco’s own language. Bax: Complete Symphonies, Orchestral Works [7 CDs]

Sir Arnold Bax wrote his seven symphonies between 1921 and 1939, embracing a prolific period that drew inspiration from a variety of sources. From the dramatic impact of the Second Symphony through to the seascapes of the Fourth and hints of Sibelius in the later works, Bax’s powerful symphonic world is one of surprising and at times stormy vigor contrasting with the most intense lyrical expressiveness and serenity. The selection of additional orchestral works provides an essential overview of Bax’s music in critically acclaimed recordings. (Naxos)

Music for Strings (Vaughan Williams, Howells, Delius) / John Wilson

This keenly anticipated album from Sinfonia of London and John Wilson features two of the greatest British works for string orchestra: Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, and Sir Edward Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro. Elgar’s ground-breaking work, commissioned for the newly formed London Symphony Orchestra and premièred in 1905, is inspired by the baroque concerto grosso, and features a solo string quartet contrasted with the full symphonic string section.
