At least one of these works is also a discographic première. Nuits, adieux, presented here both in its a cappella version and with electronics, could be described as a lullaby, not so much for a sleeping child as for an elderly person sleeping out of our world.

Much Jewish folk music was collected by the Society for Jewish Music in Moscow, and the St. Petersburg Society for Jewish Folk Music. However, forces in the new Soviet regime led many potential members of the society to emigrate. Most of this music had then lain dormant for decades until the pianist Jascha
Nemtsov (himself the son of a Gulag survivor) and his musical collaborators unearthed it in the last few years of the 20th century. The present collection contains the recordings on five discs – many of them world premieres – realized between 1999 and 2004. (SWR Classic)

“Of all pianists before the public today, Ohlsson’s technique is among the most honest. Every note is present and accounted for. In fact, listening to the slow movements of these concertos, one would be hard-pressed to name another performance that sings with greater contour, poise and clarity. This is a bouquet of Beethoven concertos like no other.” – Gramophone (Reference)

Holst: The Planets / Daniel Harding
“Horns and woodwind are expressive, strings lithe, the layers of wordless high voices perfectly blended. From the menace of Mars, bringer of war, to the serene beauty of Venus, the mix of jollity and nobility in Jupiter, the unworldly sadness of Saturn and the pianissimo dissonance of Neptune, this is a revelatory performance.”

Bruckner: Motets
“Complete recorded collections of Bruckner’s motets are not as common as one might expect. “A program comprising works depicting either the Virgin Mary or Mary Magdalene through time, conceived of and executed with flair by the soprano Anna Prohaska and violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja. 1CD# ALPHA739 $18.99
Humperdinck: Der Blaue Vogel (The Blue Bird) [2 CDs]
“This music bears a strong resemblance to Mahler, but just until the solo violin takes over with a sentimental theme that is lusciously played by the un-named concertmaster. Tast elegantly shapes the beautifully sketched musical themes for Bread, Fire, Water, and Milk, who all become characters in the play.” – MusicWeb (Capriccio)
2CD# C5506 $20.99
Zwilich: Cello Concerto & Other Works
“A brand-new cello concerto from a Pulitzer prize-winner! Zuill Bailey’s formidable technique and profound involvement with the music lend extra power to this sassy, jazzy work in which Zwilich’s hallmark propulsive energy in passages of incisively bowed syncopated semiquavers, alternates with moments of profound calm.” – The Strad (Delos) 1CD# DE 3596 $16.99
Britten & Bruch: Violin Concertos
“Leong really makes his mark with the concluding Passacaglia, a form so beloved of both Britten and Shostakovich as a metaphorical anchor in times of great stress. Suddenly psychological ambiguities are set aside and in the wake of one war Britten becomes contentious objector of all. With outstanding collaboration from the Philharmonia Orchestra I can’t recall a better account of the piece than this.”

Anime Immortani / Franco Fagioli
“In ‘Va’ pure ad altri in braccio’ from La finta giardiniera the strings dive down in fury in a style that teases Gluck’s ideas about how rage should sound in reformed opera. But it’s Fagioli who commands the storm with admirable breath control here as throughout this recording, with an almost seamless line from the dramatic top of the voice to fruity chest notes.”

Elcock: Chamber Music, Vol. 2 – String Quartets
“Elcock has put his formative years of playing the violin to profitable use with his idiomatic and resourceful writing for strings. Suffice to add the Tippett Quartet, which premiered the latter two works, proves an assured and persuasive exponent while the running order, of 2-1-4-3, makes for a program well worth experiencing as a continuous sequence.”

Forbidden Fruit / Benjamin Appl, James Baillieu

18 Piano Sutras & 25 South Asian Pianisms / Tanya Ekanayaka [2 CDs]
“Ekanayaka provides a new and good soundtrack to calm moments. I have played this one a few times, and occasionally think I hear a quote from Rachmaninov or Beethoven. There are in fact a lot of familiar classical echoes in here, but Miss Ekanayaka is simply improvising with a strong basis in the classical repertoire.” – Muzikifan (Naxos World)
2CD# NXW76163-2 $21.99
Mahler: Symphony No. 7 / Bernard Haitink
“The two Nachtmusiken and the shadowy Scherzo, they really become here that island of dreams once described by Mahler expert Richard Specht. The atmosphere of the second Nachtmusik becomes much more frightening in Haitink’s performance than in other interpretations, but contains that wistfulness that expresses mourning for the ‘lost paradise’ in all of Mahler’s works.” (BR Klassik)

Bacewicz: Piano Concerto, Concerto for 2 Pianos
“We can never appreciate Bacewicz’s music without experiencing the full range of her works. By giving us the piano concertos and two other significant orchestra works, the disc enables us to appreciate her power and range. But more than that, the music receives superb performances, and clearly, Jablonski, Collon and the orchestra appreciate the sheer drama, bravura and brilliance of her music. – Planet Hugill (Ondine)

Inner View / Anders Lønne Grønseth & Multiverse
“And it is delightful, a seemingly organic combination of precomposition, systematicity and intuitive, in-the-moment, jazz-based improvisation. While in a sense all five musicians are soloing all the time, the most prominent among them are Grønseth and Berg, two giants of Norwegian jazz who each merit a far higher international profile than they have acquired so far.”

Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn: Variations
“Briggs navigates especially skilfully the early-Romantic storms of Mendelssohn’s Variations serieuses, giving them plenty of brilliance, lyricism and energy. The recording’s intimacy is pleasing, like hearing the pianist in her living room rather than in some big barn of a concert hall –which suits the music to a tee.”

Mahler: Symphony No. 9 / Osmo Vänskä; Minnesota Orchestra
BIS’s exemplary sound presents a deep and wide soundstage with plenty of warmth and transparency. The performance’s incredible range of dynamics, from Vänskä’s beloved barely audible pianissimos to the densest brass-laden climaxes is fully captured. I know of no other recording matching this level of clarity and depth, especially in SACD format.”

Antheil: Violin Sonatas Nos. 1– 4
George Antheil travelled to Europe in 1922 determined to become ‘noted and notorious’. The first three violin sonatas come from this period, with the eclectic Violin Sonata No. 1 displaying the fiercely barbaric influence of Stravinsky, the more jazzy No. 2 developing experiments in ‘musical cubism’ and the Violin Sonata No. 3 achieving a synthesis of Stravinskyian rhythms and Antheil’s more song-like tendencies. Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 (1888)
Bruckner’s frantic revisions of his symphonies Nos. 3, 4, and 8 were borne out of his disappointment with Hermann Levi rejecting the original version of the 8th symphony. To ears familiar with the still better-known 1881 version, the result might sound mystifying, even troubling, but it also surprises with many particularly exquisite passages!

“Stradgrass is the exploration of the violin’s stylistic capabilities, through various American folk styles, from a Classical lens. The word ‘Stradgrass’ first came about in 2015, from the novelty of performing Bluegrass on the Stradivari I was playing at the time. Stradgrass seems to be a type of musical exploration that is becoming more common within Classical violin training....” – Tessa Lark (First Hand)

Bruckner: 5 for Organ
“Bruckner’s Fifth is eminently suited to an arrangement for performance on the organ above all because of its musical texture. In no other Bruckner symphony, for example, does counterpoint play such an important part. My aim from the start was to avoid imitating the orchestra and to create a work specifically for organ in the manner of an organ symphony.” – Gerd Schaller (Profil)
