Towards Designing Disorder J. B. Jackson defines landscape as a ‘rich and beautiful book that is always open before us - we have but to learn to read it’. Landscape, therefore, is not simply what we see, but a way of seeing and a human response to the unseen, a sum of fused relationships manifesting throughout scales. By building on all the visable and invisable layers in the palimpsest drawing and physical model to introduce disruptions and experiments to transfrom Bishopsgate Goodsyard in Shoreditch London from a static Terrain Vague to a dynamic Fruit Park with interventions that reponse to the current pandemic and the unprecedented future through exploring the 3-Dimensionality of the site.

COMFORT MOBILITY: CROSS SEA BRIDGE IN HONG KONG TSING YI NORTH BRIDGE TSING YI, HONG KONG YEAR_2018 INSTITUTION_UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON PROJECT_MAJOR RESEARCH PROJECT
Major Research Project
The overarching goal of the research is to explore and enhance the motivation of people to walk and cycle under the hot and humid weather, and turn the underused public space of the bridge to a livable destination for all people, so as to facilitate the concept of ‘comfort mobility‘ when people pass through and from the islands.
Comfort Mobility: Cross-Sea Bridge
The territory of Hong Kong is made up of over 260 islands linked by the cross-sea bridges, to enhance the connectivity among the islands. However, many of the bridge is primarily designed for the traffic flow without sufficient and quality walking or cycling facilities. This eventually manifests an entrenched transportation hierarchy in HK that clearly places automobile above other active modes of transportation. The hierarchy is further exacerbated under the hot and humid subtropical climate in HK.
16
Site Selection The boundary of Hong Kong is formulated by 3 major onshore islands such as the Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories, and other over 260 offshore islands with the largest one named as the Lantau Island. While there are in total 12 cross-sea bridges in HK connecting the islands together to form an integrated wider local and regional transport network, 8 of them are directly linked to the Tsing Yi island where is located at the Central part of the New Territories. In general, while the Rambler Channel is geographically separating the Tsing Yi Island from Tsuen Wan and the Western part of New Territories, there is quite a lot of resources and potential networks nearby the waterfronts which are the local destinations of the respective communities at two ends of the Tsing YI North Bridge. Therefore, the toolkit application in this bridge could show the possibility to extend and connect two local attractions together and thereby to examine the effectiveness of the toolkit to transform the bridge into a destination as well as a route. 03 17

Toolkit Development The practical toolkit reflects the findings from the existing academic studies and case studies, to gain the ideas from the conceptual theories and the practical perspectives. The toolkit is separated into three sections in the respect of the ‘Local Cycle’, ‘Design Cycle’ and the ‘Management Cycle’. While the evaluation of the local contexts in the Local Cycle would determine the allocation and arrangement of the elements in the Design Cycle, the management strategies maintain and enforce the effectiveness and sustainability of the toolkit.

Major Research Project
The proposal is based on the design concept by detailing the elements of the design in the developed toolkit. The main vision of the proposal is to take the advantage of the existing structure of the Tsing Yi North Bridge in Hong Kong to provide choices and controls for the travelers over the physical and psychological environments during their journey, as well as to provide direct connection to the waterfronts and the nearby networks at two ends of the bridge. The concept aims to improve travelers’ sensory experience to achieve the goal of “comfort mobility and transform the bridge as a destination as well as a route.

Design Proposal
Provide choice of routes for people with different purposes and goal attainments. While covered linear route designed for commuters with the concern of distance and time, shaded non-linear route designed for recreation users pursues visual stimuli.
Split-level design with higher-level pedestrian route and lower-level cycle route to avoid actual and pergroups.
Nature vegetation and other hybrid cooling system integrated in the pathway to reduce the physiological pollutants.
Share-bike provided nearby two ends of the bridge to facilitate community cycling and modal shift to active transportation.
The installation of travellators could increase traveller’s ‘comfort shed’.
Escalator and spiral ramp provide barrier-free access to overcome the slope clearance of the bridge
Major Research Project
Choices for both intense and static attractive activities to enhance people’s perceived control over the thermal environment through the control of thermoregulation. Attractive activities and entertainment further draw people from the waterfront to the bridge.
Retails, cafes and programmed activities allocate and arrange at the middle part of the bridge to connect to wider local retail networks, and act as a ‘magnet’ to draw the movement from the waterfront to the bridge.

CONNECTING STRATFORD STRATFORD, LONDON YEAR_2018 INSTITUTION_UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON PROJECT _URBAN DESIGN: PLACE MAKING
30 years.
Urban Design Project
With the upcoming arrival of UCL East, Crossrail and the Olympicopolis developments, Stratford has massive untapped potential for redevelopment. The aim of the report is to develop a new vision, and positive sustainable strategies for Stratford to progress the Olympic legacy and to guide its successful transformation from a deindustrialised hinterland to the major commercial, leisure and residential hub of East London over the next
Connecting Stratford
Stratford is commonly associated with sports and leisure activities, for which the 2012 Summer Olympics was held in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Whilst the surrounding has established a reputation of positive public-engaging planning, other parts of Stratford have been left with social challenges and development pres- sure. For instance, major road connections in the form of High Street bisect Stratford in a Southeast-Northwest providing a barrier on either side, and adjacent areas have been suffering from under development.

FLEET GARDEN MOUNT PLEASANT, LONDON YEAR_2018 INSTITUTION_UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON PROJECT_URBAN DESIGN: DENSITY, LAYOUT & TYPOLOGY
between the site and surrounding areas.
Fleet Garden
The overarching goal for the proposal is to preserve and strengthen the historically, culturally and geographically important features of the site such the cultural museum and the River Fleet ran across under the site area, whilst maintaining the existing community specific to the nearby neighbourhoods such as the urban forms, building usage, connectivity as well as experiential continuity
Urban Design Project
Mount Pleasant is a controversial redevelopment site located in Farringdon, distributed across the London Boroughs of Camden and Islington. Planning permission for the site was approved in 2015 by the then Mayor, Boris Johnson, but as a result of widespread opposition and a new owner, the new Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has decided to consider alternative schemes. A revised scheme was created on the back of macro- and micro-scale analysis of the site and its context, as well as a critique of the existing proposals.

Based on the analysis, the first stage of this plan was to combine the two sides of the plot by pedestrianising Phoenix Place to encourage a pedestrian friendly neighborhood.
Identifies the main routes and activity nodes based on the connections to and through the site, and the surrounding urban context.
Two public squares are created at the main intersection points. Buildings are reviewed and broke down into perimeter blocks in order to provide well-defined hierarchy of open space.
This stage shows how two of the perimeter blocks are opened to improve permeability and levels of public and semi-private space. Community gardens have been adjusted for a better sense of enclosure.
The final stage shows a gradation of heights, where all the buildings have a maximum difference of 1 storey. Elevated community spaces are added to further define the better hierarchy of spaces.

SUSTAINABLE VISION: POPLAR POPLAR, LONDON YEAR_2018 INSTITUTION_UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON PROJECT_SUSTAINABLE FUTURE BY DESIGN
Urban Design Project
To relieve these planning problems, the aim of the project is to deliver a holistic approach to all the aspects of sustainability in Poplar through number of multi-scale of interventions, in order to create a city that is more inclusive, collaborative, consuming less resources, allowing interaction with nature whilst strengthen its design as well as maintain and reuse the existing heritage.
Sustainable Vision: Poplar
Poplar is located in the London Borough of Tower Hamlet at the north of Canary Wharf, captures number of nation’s problems in microcosm, such as unemployment, poverty, community tensions, housing pressures, inequality as well as health and education problems, Many of these planning issues have long been regarded as ‘wicked problems’ due to its uncertainty, complexity and conflict with no standard causes nor solutions.
42
Site Overview Poplar is one of the highest child poverty level area in London and in the UK. While the average children poverty level in the UK is around 27%, Poplar has the third worst poverty level at 53% and noticed as the biggest increase up to 10% in the past two years. It is suggested that children living in hardship without adequate help and support would eventually transfer the vulnerability to the next generation and thereby causing to the irreversible consequences. Without sufficient support from the local government, the daily struggle of the children who are facing poverty problem is that they are always facing other wider aspect of social problems in terms of their education, health and physical as well as mental well beings. The axonometric map, therefore, showing different social problem currently facing by the Poplar children and residents as the insight for the serious child poverty problem in Poplar.
43
KID ZONE Children-friendliness is not the notion merely benefits the youngest inhabitants, but also a solution to the wider urban challenge which lead to a better city for all. Inspired by Gibson’s (1994) affordance theory, a conceptual framework has been developed initially by Marketta Kytta (2003) to assess and categorise the typology of children friendly environment.
Urban Design Project
Sustainable Vision: Poplar
The framework illustrates the concept in terms of the relationship between the availability of experiences offers in a neighborhood and the level of freedom or independent mobility children able to access and explore to those experience. It is further indicated that Independent mobility is not only referring to the ability for children to move freely unaccompanied by an adult, but also an indicator for the perceptions of safety, and proximity, option and availability of activities for all people either by children or adult (Hillman et al, 2015).
44
TO “BEE” MY HOME A1261 Aspen Way Road and A12 Blackwall Tunnel in Poplar have been selected into the ‘Toxic twenty’ which is the list of the most highly polluted spots in London compiled by the Labour (2016). It is noticed that these roads have twice the EU legal limits of the emission level of nitrous oxide. Meanwhile, the United Nations (2015) stated that 9% of bee and butterfly population on the planet is facing extinction respectively due to the air pollution problem. Since there are two main roads in Poplar have been selected into the ‘Toxic Twenty’ list, while butterfly and bee population have dramatically fallen in the UK urban area. It is necessary for Poplar to bear most, if not all, of the responsibility for the species extinction problem. . One of the abandoned gasholder frames nearby the A12 Roads will be refurbished to be an artificial honeycomb to tackle the stated problems by transforming it into a functioned art installation. The proposed intervention aims to send out a message that it is never too late to save our ‘home’, and to create a livable yet interactive environment for all species as well as to raise people’s awareness toward the air pollution problem.

Design Strategy:
The form of the proposed Lyric Square is inspired by the shape of the musical symbols, and identified by the existing pedestrian routes and footfall.
The spatial arrangement of the design is to u a series of timber structure which functions planter and informal seating that differentiat curvilinear footpath in the square, to intro a rambling route for people to slow down pace and enjoy their moment in the square ural trail. Two sides of the square provide a frontages and outdoor cafés, to maintain a level of ‘eyes on the street’ and vibrancy o area (Jacobs, 1961).
Proposed Vision: As Lyric Square is located in the Hammersmith Regeneration Area set out in the Hammersmith and Fulham Local Plan (2018), the proposal is aiming to create a place where is not only a route but also a destination for people to slow down their pace, relax and explore the area, while introducing a new sustainable natural trail connecting the Lyric Square to the tube station, Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, and the Eastern end of King Street where is the main shopping street in Hammersmith and one of the primary objectives to be improved for its connectivity and accessibility set out by the LBHF Local Plan (2018) para.5.45.
The setting of the proposed timber structu aiming to enhance the sense of enclosure o square. Simultaneously, it is introducing a distinctive green corridor that connects the Street and Beadon Street where further lin the Hammersmith station.
With the lightweight timber structures, the se of the square could be reconfigured over based on the users’ experience and the f trend of the city. It is an adaptable and sustain design that encouraged by the LBHF Local (2018) para. 10.5.
Since the location of Lyric Square is sitting i tween two A315 roads, timber structures with ture trees are installed at two ends of the sq where are next to the A roads, to act as the bu to absorb and mitigate the noise pollution erated by the vehicles, to create a peace env ment for people to enjoy and relax in the squ
