Project 01 Capsule 2011

I think Capsule is really fantastic. I like sleeping with the light on, but a waste of electricity is a problem, which will never bother me if I have the Capsule. ---- Zhou, a student, aged 21
This product is a green and gorgeous bedside lamp. In the daytime, solar energy, by means of the Solar panel in the enclosure, will be converted into electricity stored in batteries for night use. Also, its LED light intensity can be easily adjusted by the change of its lampshade height. When the sleeping mode is on, its lampshade, affected by the internal Damping Module, will automatically and slowly descend until the light is turned off. I named it Capsule.

I like sleeping with the lights on, which makes me feel more secure. When I was a little child, my parents always turned off the lights after I fell asleep. But now I live alone and nobody does this for me. I am an environmentalist and cannot stand such a waste of energy. However, the bedside lamp is necessary. This dilemma does bother me a lot. ---- Alex, a student, aged 23 I love bedtime reading. Sometimes, I forget to turn off the lamp before falling asleep, and leave it on till next morning, which affects my girlfriend’s sleep. ---- Yon, a teacher, aged 31

Sandglass
Hourglass
Inspiration Capsule
Sandglass is the inspiration for my design. It is an ancient instrument for measuring time. Because of the gravity, sand in the glass bulbs smoothly flows from the top to the bottom. The Hourglass in ancient China is similar to the sandglass; the only difference is that it measures time through water falling at uniform speed. Free fall under gravity requires no additional energy. In other words, it is energy-efficient. I do hope to succeed in the automation of light switch by utilizing the special feature of gravity. In addition, the combination of the LED, solar panel and rechargeable battery is the cleanest energy I can ever think of.
I have tried to extract the element of Sandglass figure, at the same time to guarantee enough outside surface to hold solar panels.
Ceativity Process Capsule
Chosen Concept Capsule
Ultimately I have chosen this concept. First, compared with other geometric solids, cylinder has bigger effective surface area, which can use solar energy more effectively. Second, its round and bright shape with black color will give people the feeling of gentle and peace, never influence users’ mood before retiring.
Design Brief Capsule
Black surface are specially-processed Solar Panels. At the day time, these panels convert solar energy to electric energy, which is stored in the Cell Module at the bottom. Frosted glass material makes LED light softer.

Adjustable lampshade. Up-and-down switch is to adjust illumination intensity, and rotation switch is to swift illumination modes, which include Reading Mode and Sleeping Mode. In Reading Mode, the lampshade will not move; In Sleeping Mode, with the Damping Module inside, the lampshade will automatically lower very slowly thanks to the gravity; At last it will close completely and cut off the power. Furthermore, to rotate the lampshade further can adjust the lowering speed.

Project 02 ToastPrinter
2010

Those little kids would never let you feel at ease. You will make great efforts to wake them up and coax them to have breakfasts and go to school. Every morning is just like a battle. I think the ToastPrinter will help me a lot. ---- Sara, a mother, aged 38
This project aims at providing a new experience of having breakfast as well as an unprecedented experience of printing concept for the users, especially for the children. I named it ToastPrinter. This product could raise their interests in having breakfast. In short, it takes jam or sauce instead of ink and accordingly, toast instead of paper, to print the pattern or design which has been defined through the touch screen. Children would fall in love with breakfast for the interests and entertainments that ToastPrinter brings to them. It also makes a perfect start for a new day.
Concept ToastPrinter
Problem ToastPrinter
In most cases, it is not a pleasant thing to get up ---- at least for the majority of the children. Reluctantly, they wake up to the call of the alarm clock with a stomach of depression. Moreover, the breakfast is always monotonous day after day without any change. It may take a few minutes to coax our children to finish their breakfasts.
“
I would have not hated getting up so much if my breakfast could become more interesting. ---- Adam, aged 6 I have toast with jam every morning; I have got tired of it. ---- Chelsea, aged 8 I have tried to do something different but it takes a lot of time, I may be late for work. ---- Zheng, a mother, aged 34
It is a classic combo to have toast slice with jam for breakfast. Therefore, I tried to make it more appealing. I consider jam as a kind of “edible colored liquid” and it occurs to me that a printer also works with colored liquid. I am thrilled about my idea: why not combine them together? According to a visit survey, many children like to paint on their fried eggs and bread with sauce and jam. It sounds very interesting that “ A printer could spray jam” and children would definitely love it.

Initial Sketching Phase
I tried to use some lively elements in my design to make children become more interested in the product.
At the front of this product are a Touch screen and a Multifunctional button followed by a Jam box keeping jam and sauce of different colors. Jam could be sprayed on the toast slice through the inferior Biaxial-nozzle by defining patterns on the Touch screen.

People who have to sit for long time because of job needs should not sit for more than 8 consecutive hours, take exercise for 10 minutes every two hours, such as walk freely or make body exercise. ---- Xu, a doctor, aged 31
This product is a multi-functional thermos cup. Its major target users are office ladies. Aiming at these sedentar y and lack-of-exercise office ladies, It is designed to bring thermos mug and dumbbell together. Users can take some physical exercises, such yoga, at any time and any place to reduce the harm of "office disease". I named this product Thermo-Bell.
Concept Thermo-Bell
Problem Thermo-Bell
Of fice ladies suffered from painful and sore neck and shoulder, blurred vision, decreased visual acuity, dry eyes, dizzy, etc. Moreover, long-time office work makes many white collars suffered from musculoskeletal diseases. These are the concrete symptoms of “office disease”. Although “office disease” is not listed into occupational disease yet, we have to pay attention to protecting ourselves from it. I conducted a survey among a number of office ladies.
