(OPENING THOUGHTS)

WORD OF THE LORD AT THE BEGINNING OF THE JEWISH NEW Year while at an Eagles' Wings conference in September, here is what we heard: Alignment - Only align yourself with people, ministry, business and corporations that further God's purposes and mission in the Kingdom. Some people cannot go with you into the future God has for you. Some old relationships will come around full circuit, be re-established and renewed with new purposes to fulfill what God has for your future through divine connections. Align yourself with God's mission, purpose, goal and directions for your life that you might know Him and do His will. Those aligned with Him connect to; those aligned with just a vision, dream or mission but without a vital relationship with Him, disconnect from. Bless those whom He blesses; avoid those living in curse, criticism and condemnation. Sow only in the field He has shown you. Walk in covenant and grace. Read Psalm 1, Proverbs 4, Isaiah 58. Establish - God desires for you to use this season to establish a firm foundation in His Presence to build upon for the future. Anything that can be shaken will be shaken. Put down deep pilings into the ground of His being that you might stand firm and whatever you do will be a lasting legacy for His glory. 2 Chronicles 20:20-23 reveals, "Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the LORD your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper." And when [Hezekiah] had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the LORD, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying: "Praise the LORD, For His mercy endures forever." Now when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated. For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another. (NKJV) Equip – Read Ephesians 4:11-16. Equip and raise up leaders who will do the work of ministry with excellence and who, in turn, raise up leaders. Redeem the time. Behold, the Bridegroom Cometh. God is stirring up the fivefold ministry within your midst to build a team that will convert and transform people and cultures. Create an atmosphere that sets a "hot" not lukewarm or cold climate in your family, church, business and ministry. See that climate burn away chaff so that only precious faith like refined gold remains. Raise up a culture that reflects the Kingdom of God being changed from glory to glory. Do Kingdom business that blesses and prospers others, sows seed into good soil and leaves a legacy.

There’s an easy-to-forget fact that many people – even Christians – tend to overlook – that Jesus is coming back and His return is closer than it ever has been. What do you need to do to prepare? How does God want to use you in these strategic times? BETTER GET READY… JESUS IS COMING!

T

his is the most strategic time in human history. Jesus is returning as Bridegroom, King and Judge to take over all the nations of the earth, and it could happen within the lifetime of my grandchildren. If this is true, it implies that a massive shift is soon coming to prepare for the hour in which Jesus transitions the earth from this age to the age to come. Would we be ready if this happened in our lifetime? Would our children or grandchildren be ready? The Scripture describes very unique dynamics, both positive and negative, that will occur in the generation in which the Lord returns. People ask if things will get better or worse. The answer is both, because the wheat and tares will mature together at the end of the age (Matt. 13:30). The Lord will release a great revival that will far surpass the events of the book of Acts, along with His fierce judgments that will shake everything that can be shaken (Heb. 12:26-29). The Church will witness the greatest demonstration of God’s power in history, transforming various areas of society. At the same time, strongholds of darkness will be established in other places, which will be shaken by God’s judgments as Jesus confronts wickedness and removes everything that hinders love. In the midst of these dramatic and unique events, the Lord is raising up a company of anointed forerunner messengers from among the nations of the earth who have prophetic understanding of the hour in which they live, who do not love their lives unto death, and who fearlessly proclaim the return of the King and the certainty of His victory (Rev. 12:10-11). JESUS’ FIRST AND SECOND COMINGS

esus spoke more about the generation that will be alive at His second coming than the generation in which He was born. Why? To prepare the Bride to be victorious in love and power during the most dramatic time in world history and to see great advances of the kingdom of God in society (Rev. 18:7). Gaining understanding about the end times is a key to preparing the Church to be victorious during the greatest extremes of glory and pressure in history. It provides us with a compass in the storm. Having understanding about the end times will be an issue of life or death to many in that hour.

J

The four gospels give us a record of Jesus’ heart and power at His first coming, when JAN-MAR ’11

He accomplished redemption. In a similar way, the end of the age reveals Jesus’ heart and power as He takes over the leadership of the whole earth. The book of Revelation is called the revelation of Jesus—it reveals His heart, His power, and His authority. Studying the end times causes us to be fascinated with Jesus, because it is the study of His leadership and His ways and reveals what He is like. The more we study His ways, the more we fall in love with Him.

OUR TIME TO SHINE

T

he prepared, prophetic Church will have understanding that keeps many from being offended by Jesus in the end times because of His judgments. God will raise up forerunners who will explain why a God of love would allow and even orchestrate some of the events of the Great Tribulation. The purpose of God’s judgments is to remove all that hinders love so that multitudes would be saved and grow mature in love. The forerunner ministry announces ahead of time the unprecedented activities of the Lord and the unique dynamics of the generation in which the Lord returns. Forerunners declare what is unprecedented and uncommon in their generation; they declare these truths in order to make sense of what is happening to the people of God.

The Jesus seen in many end-time Scriptures is different from the Jesus that many imagine. The Jesus of Christmas will bring peace and good will to all men. The Jesus of Armageddon will confront everything that hinders love so that His peace may actually fill the earth. There is no contradiction between the Jesus of Christmas and the Jesus of Armageddon. It is exactly the same person. Jesus is not a heavenly Santa Claus, committed to making life easy in this age. Rather, He is committed to changing the nations by pouring out His Spirit now on His Church. He is a zealous Bridegroom King coming to establish His Father’s glory, to vindicate His persecuted Bride, and to replace all the evil governments on earth. Unless we are able to make sense of this, we may become offended at Jesus because we have never seen Him revealed in this way.

At Jesus’ first coming, the Lord raised up John the Baptist as a forerunner to prepare the way for the first stage of His Son’s earthly ministry. John cultivated deep intimacy with God as he pursued a life of radical obedience in the wilderness of Judea. He was a voice for the Lord in his generation, making sense of the times and the seasons, and preparing God’s people for Jesus’ ministry among them in the spirit and power of Elijah. Jesus described John as “the burning and shining lamp” (John 5:35), who burned with passion for God’s heart and shone with bright righteousness and a prophetic spirit of revelation in his generation.

For instance, out of a love for wickedness, and because of great deception, fear, and offense at Jesus’ activity, the love of many will grow cold. People will be persuaded to choose sin over righteousness because they do not understand the hour in which they are living. They will be those who do not know God and are unable to make sense of His activity in time and history. Scripture is clear that their fate will be the same as that of unbelievers—eternal separation from God.

In the same way, God is again raising up forerunner messengers to prepare the way for His Son’s return. The book of Daniel tells us that in the midst of great trial, confusion, and uncertainty on the earth at the end of the age, God will bring forth a people who know their God and possess understanding

I

“There is no contradiction between

THE JESUS OF CHRISTMAS and the Jesus of Armageddon.” of the plans and purposes of God in their generation (Dan. 11:33-35; 12:10; Jer. 23:20; 30:24). THE COMPANY OF FORERUNNERS

W

e are told three things about this company of forerunners. First, this group will be strong in spirit, possessing great inner strength and walking in righteousness in the darkest hour of human history (Dan. 11:32-35). They will not shrink back in fear or offense in the midst of the greatest time of tribulation the world has ever known (Rev. 12:10-11). Secondly, they will do great exploits as God anoints them for demonstrations of power that will exceed those described in the book of Acts. Thirdly, as those who have understanding of the times and seasons, they will instruct many, making sense of God’s end-time activity for those who are bewildered and confused. These “Day-of-the-Lord preachers” (those who proclaim in advance the great and terrible day of the Lord) will, like Noah and John the Baptist, prepare God’s people for the coming of the Lord. God is looking for a people in these days who, like the sons of Issachar in King David’s day, have understanding of the times and know how to give leadership to His people in times of great crisis. He is looking for watchmen who will listen, understand, and proclaim God’s purposes, to prepare the people of God for what is coming to the earth: those like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel,

Daniel, Anna, John the Baptist, and the early apostles who were all consumed with the purposes of God in their generation. The forerunner ministry is a call to abandon business as usual and to pursue the purposes of God with holy, spiritual intensity. Like John the Baptist, forerunners are forged in a lifestyle of prayer, fasting, and radical obedience to Jesus. The forerunners that God raises up in the end times will be abandoned to Jesus in intimacy as they encounter Him as Bridegroom, King and Judge. They will be unshakable in spirit and do great exploits in His name. As voices for the Lord, and not simply echoes of another man’s message, they will instruct many with revelation and understanding of the judgments of God as they unfold. God will raise up forerunners in every sphere of society who will proclaim through writing, preaching, and music that Jesus is coming and His people must get ready. As burning and shining lamps, they will blaze with passion for Jesus, and radiate righteousness and the understanding that is gained in the place of prayer and fasting. These people will often be misunderstood as they proclaim themes that are unpopular and unknown in their day. Yet, like John the Baptist, they will know the voice of Jesus their Bridegroom King and their joy will be full. (KINGDOM LEGACY) APPLYING THE WISDOM OF SOLOMON

TO OUR BANK ACCOUNTS BY JOEL JAMES

IN THINKING ABOUT King Solomon, I am often struck with the irony of his life. This man, who was blessed with supernatural wisdom made some pretty foolish mistakes. As one of the wealthiest persons ever to have lived, Solomon impoverished himself in countless ways. One of the many life lessons we can glean from the book of Ecclesiastes reads, "He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with its income..." (5:10). I guess no one would know that better than Solomon! How ironic that the blessing of wealth, when not stewarded properly, becomes a weight that drags us down… You may be thinking to yourself, “Well, having too much money is one problem I don’t have!” If you'll allow me, I would like to issue two challenges regarding that thought: 1. Any amount of money can drag us away from God's best if we give it a place of unholy influence in our lives. Whatever we enthrone will end up ruling over us. Sadly, many people's lives revolve around meaningless stuff they think will bring them happiness but never does. Even preoccupying ourselves with wanting stuff we don't need can end up compromising our willingness to serve the Lord wholeheartedly. Decide today to seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, so that the things you need can be added unto you (see Mt 6:33).

2. We have more financial assets at our disposal than most people on earth could even imagine! Because it's human nature to compare ourselves to those we perceive as being better-off than we are, we often end up focusing on what we don't have rather than on appreciating what we do have. There are so many resources at your disposal which, if wisely stewarded, can impact eternal realities. Actively seek God in this New Year as to how you can maximize your giving so that the Kingdom of Heaven advances in the earth. I encourage you to get off on the right foot this year by setting your financial house in order! which reads, “WHAT IS MAN THAT THOU ART MINDFUL OF HIM.”

P

This age-old question directed toward the Creator of the Universe in the eighth Psalm, stands as a challenge to the learned elite of our day, reminding us for over a century of our insignificance, our weakness, and our humility before God.

erhaps you’ve heard the story of how one of our nation’s most prestigious landmarks received its wellknown inscription. Historic Emerson Hall, located in a grassy, central square on Harvard University’s campus, is home to the school’s Philosophy department. The building was named after Ralph Waldo Emerson, and was completed at the turn of the last century.

Friends, if there has always been a struggle initiated by man against his Creator to deny his need for Him (or to deny Him altogether) that struggle seems to have reached a deafening crescendo in this hour. I believe that we are approaching a very simple, fundamental and politically-incorrect question, which demands an answer from us: Will we bow to the One, True and Living God, or won’t we?

It is said that the faculty of that day were eager to choose an inscription for their new building that would befit the intellectual pursuits that were to go on inside of it. So, the professors, philosophers, and other intellectuals got together and agreed upon a phrase that seemed an accurate theme to the scholarly endeavors of Philosophy, Psychology and the like. They drew from early Greek thought, landing on the Protagorean maxim, “Man is the Measure of all things.”

ONE NATION UNDER GOD

he season we’re in has brought with it much change. It seems that from one moment to the next the life of our nation is undergoing radical renovations as mankind continues its quest to edit God out of our history and our future.

T

When the faculty returned from their summer recess, however, they found their recommendation had been overridden by the President of the University, who had replaced their claim with an entirely different motto. The story goes that President C.W. Eliot was so incensed at the presumptuous attitude of his peers – the idea that man was somehow the center of the universe – that he chose a quotation that expressed a completely contrary outlook. And if you were to visit Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts today and approach the great steps of Emerson Hall, you could look up and still read that inscription, engraved in the stone above,

I’m sure I couldn’t make a better case for an America that is rooted in dependence upon God than could our founding fathers, who risked their lives to do so. Let’s hear from them in their own words: John Hancock: In circumstances as dark as these, it becomes us, as Men and Christians, to reflect that whilst every prudent measure should be taken to ward off the impending judgments, …at the same time all confidence must be withheld from the means we use; and reposed only on that God rules in the armies of Heaven,

And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this. I also believe that, without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel” –Constitutional Convention of 1787 | original manuscript of this speech Thomas Paine: It has been the error of the schools to teach astronomy, and all the other sciences, and subjects of natural philosophy, as accomplishments only; whereas they should be taught theologically, or with reference to the Being who is the author of them: for all the principles of science are of divine origin. ought to look through the discovery to the Author.” “The Existence of God— 1810” James Madison: We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We’ve staked the future of all our political institutions upon our capacity…to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.” [1778 to the General Assembly of the State of Virginia] These words are inspiring, yet also sobering, when one thinks of how few of our nation’s leaders today would agree with them. I seem to have a positive outlook ingrained into my genetic code. To a fault, I consistently give the benefit of the doubt in doubtful situations, trusting that somehow things will work themselves out and we’ll all make it through to the other side. This attitude can be a real blessing since, no matter the outcome of a situation, God is always faithful. However, when I -the quintessential optimistfind myself having grave concerns over the moral well-being of, say, Western Civilization, I know they must be grave concerns indeed.

“My prayer for us in this New Year is

THAT WE WOULD RETURN TO THE ANCIENT PATHS.” Friends, I cannot pretend to believe that we’ll achieve a favorable outcome in our private, political, and professional endeavors if we continue to take God out of our institutions, our laws, our schools, our homes, even our churches; and claim we can make it on our own.

KAIROS MOMENT #1

A New Kind of Tourist Amish Christians from the US left their farms and travelled to Israel, in an unprecedented move of repentance and reconciliation. These Believers went far beyond their comfort zones in order to ask forgiveness from Israelis for anti-Semitic attitudes harbored by the Amish for centuries and for their traditional belief in Replacement Theology. They declared they now recognized Israel as God's chosen people and exhorted all Amish to strongly support the Jewish people and Jewish state. www.israeltoday.co.il

My prayer for us in this New Year is that we would return to the ancient paths set forth by our good and loving Creator in His Word:

“He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”

KAIROS MOMENT #2

(Micah 6:8).

God Is Real

T

here is an ancient wisdom in which our civilization was rooted that we would do well to follow today. Let us return to our God with fasting, weeping and mourning; crying out for mercy on ourselves and on our nation. Let us pledge to Him again our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

So 64 year old LA native Ed Rosenthal says, after being saved from dire conditions during his recent trip to Israel. The Jewish tourist travelled to Israel to hike, but his trip soon turned into a nightmare after getting lost in the desert. Ed ran out of water and says he is sure he would not have survived another day had it not been for a rare rainfall that came just in time. He attests, “There was definitely a miracle... My conclusion is that G-d is real...”

WALKING IN THE SPIRIT. RE-PROGRAMMING OURSELVES TO BE LIKE JESUS.

How often do we find ourselves saying that we want to be like Jesus? Christ-likeness is a valid desire. In fact, it’s what all of creation waits and groans for…for us to be revealed as sons of God. New KAIROS author Eric L. Warren walks us from the desire for Christ-likeness to actually possessing it.

JAN-MAR ’11

21

KAIROS

In order for us to achieve Christ-likeness, it is imperative that we understand the mind of Christ. What were His thoughts and what was the inner spiritual construct that governed those thoughts? I believe the answer to that question lies in Isaiah 11:2-3:

pernatural signs that we ignore the seemingly mundane dimensions of Christ’s life that demonstrated as much of God as signs, miracles and wonders. Sometimes God shows up in our lives in a wise decision or a word of counsel. But, in our quest to demonstrate our spiritual prowess, we have often neglected some of the weightier matters in exchange for some of the more demonstrative expressions of His presence.

“And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the spirit of wisdom, and understanding, the spirit of counsel, and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;

Jesus was not a miracle-working machine; he was also a man who made wise decisions, walked in the spirit of the Lord, was of quick understanding, was full of true knowledge, walked in wise counsel, did mighty deeds, and walked in the fear

And shall make Him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and He shall not judge after the sight of His eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of His ears;” (KJV) The mind of Christ was obviously full of the seven spirits of God mentioned in

“God needs men, women, and children who can

‘STAND IN THE KING’S PALACE’ with the wisdom of Daniel.” of the Lord at all times. These things were just as important in His representation of the Godhead as doing miracles. In demonstrating the life of God, Jesus walked in wisdom, integrity, accountability, truth, discipline, faithfulness, etc. These characteristics were all part of the presence of the seven spirits of God that were resting upon Him.

this passage—each spirit is an aspect of the Holy Spirit who imparts to us the mind of Christ. Since these seven spirits were critical to His life, they must also be critical to us. As we put on the mind of Christ and understand His spiritual DNA, we will see more of the manifestation of His presence in our lives. The seven spirits of God represent the fullness of God in the life of Christ and comprise the “technology” of the only begotten Son of God.

These seven spirits are part of God’s supernatural equipping technology. In our continual pursuit for more of God, we must begin to bring balance back into our walk with the Lord. These seven spirits provided both balance and power in the practical and supernatural dimensions of Jesus’ life and the patriarchs and they will do the same for us today.

TECHNICALLY SPEAKING

John 1:16, tells us that we have received of His “fullness”. If we truly want to be like Him and do His works, we must be able to walk in His fullness. Some of the fullness of Christ is in the dimension of supernatural signs, miracles and wonders, but these manifestations alone do not comprise the fullness of Christ.

In the book of Daniel, we see that Nebuchadnezzar was looking for children of Israel who were “skillful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science.” (Daniel 1:4). Here we

have three of the seven spirits of God mentioned. By continuing to read the book of Daniel we discover that all seven of the seven spirits were operative in his life. Today, God needs men, women, and, yes, children who also possess these qualities so that we can “stand in the king’s palace” with the wisdom of Daniel.

ing the ark of the testimony, the mercy seat, the furniture, garments for the priests, the anointing oil, etc. He told Moses that He had selected Bezaleel (Exodus 31:1-11). Bezaleel was “filled” with the spirit of God, the spirit of wisdom, the spirit of understanding, and the spirit of knowledge. These are four of the seven spirits of God that were in the life of this man of God. These four spirits enabled him to make and oversee the production of all of the appointments in the tabernacle of Moses. This man of God is an example of what we see throughout the scriptures. The seven spirits of God are God’s equipping technology for His people to enable them to do exploits for Him.

GOD’S EQUIPPING TECHNOLOGY

Today, we are inundated with technology on a scale that is unprecedented. It’s all supposed to enable us to live superior, easier, more productive lives. Sometimes, we actually get what’s promised, but often we don’t. Often what happens is that we get the opposite of what we wanted – more complications and headaches instead of less!

Jesus walked in all of these seven spirits of God and did many mighty deeds to advance the Kingdom of His Father. We are told that we have received of His “fullness” and that we should do “greater works” than these. We can only do these greater works by walking in His fullness.

As human beings, we often oversell what we produce, but God never oversells what He produces. What He promises, He is able to perform. Isaiah 11:3 says that as a result of having the seven spirits of God resting upon Him, Jesus Christ would not judge (rule) after the sight of His eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of His ears. Jesus did in fact walk in this fashion in the earth.

Paul exhorts us to put on the “mind of Christ”. The mind of Christ was filled with the spirit of the Lord, the spirit of wisdom, the spirit of knowledge, the spirit of understanding, the spirit of counsel, the spirit of might, and the spirit of the fear of the Lord. When we put on the mind of Christ, we also embrace the equipping technology of these seven spirits of God.

One of the pressing issues of the world today is the pursuit of righteous rule, true justice, and equity. Isaiah 11:2-4 says that Jesus Christ possessed those qualities as a result of the seven spirits of God. One of the “signs” of true discipleship according to Jesus is faithfulness to the Word (John 8:31, 32). In order to maintain faithfulness to continue in the Word of the Lord we need to walk in the spirits of wisdom, knowledge, understanding, counsel, and the fear of the Lord. These seven spirits of God are actually the Holy Spirit’s equipping technology for effective service.

Are you ready to be today’s Bezaleel or Daniel? God wants to use you to express His kingdom in the earth as it is in heaven. If you’re ready, lay hold of these seven spirits of God, and let’s take the kingdom by force! K Apostle Eric L. Warren is the Senior Elder of Equip U Ministries in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. QUEEN of HART Up close with Britain’s Patron Saint of Humanitarian Aid BY SARAH WOLF

KAIROS brings you up close and personal with the founder

of one of the most innovative aid organizations in existence. H.A.R.T is reaching farther than just about anyone, and is making a difference in the lives of the persecuted and oppressed around the world. Be inspired to make 2011 a year in which you impact the world both near and far.

MEETING THE LADY THE BARONESS CAROLINE COX of Queensbury was not at all as I expected. Any worries as to whether I should curtsy, bow, address her by her full title, etc. were long forgotten the moment she waltzed into the room‌well, quick-stepped, to be exact. I am standing in an unassuming office building located in a derelict neighborhood in the north of London, from which her four person staff makes the incredible impact on the world they do. It becomes apparent within these first few moments, in which she apologizes for her (impeccable) appearance and offers to take me out to lunch, that she wants me to call her Caroline. Caroline has just flown in from Atlanta, Georgia, from what I ascertain to be a charity fundraiser for the newly-formed American affiliate of the aid organization she founded in 2003, Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART). The event, called Dancing with the HART Stars and modeled after the popular competitive TV show, raised over $90,000 for the vital work these committed activists spearhead in developing countries around the globe.

House of Lords, which was bestowed on her in 1982. In her spare time, she runs a renowned, cutting-edge non-government organization that, to me, makes the UN’s humanitarian endeavors sound like cushy, tourist safaris. Caroline pulls up a chair beside the desk where I’m seated and before I know it, I’m on the ground with her in foreign cities I’ve never heard of before, mesmerized by cinematic storylines of danger, courage, and deliverance playing out before my eyes. Among her many well-deserved recognitions and honors is being named

“I did ball-room dance in grammar school, and luckily it all came back to me,” she says amidst counting out the tiny steps she is taking, “Slow, quickquick, slow, quick-quick...Well, some of it came back to me,” she modestly amends. She placed first for audience approval with a score of 9, 8, 8 from the judges...not bad for a retired grandmother at the age of 73! As for her age, if you were to meet the Baroness, you would certainly not guess her to be much out of her fifties, if that. She exudes the kind of authentic youthfulness that cannot be injected

“HART exists as a means of

REACHING THE FORGOTTEN peoples of the world.” into one’s forehead or the corners of one’s eyes. Instantly upon meeting her, it’s clear she has the energy of a twentysomething grad student, and that her young-at-heart demeanor stems from having lived a life of altruistic kindness always focused on others. Not that she would tell you so herself…her profound humility is so refreshingly genuine, you get the impression that she is one of those rare persons who truly doesn’t know how humble she is. hen asked how it is she has come to lead the remarkable life she now does, her eyes sparkle with delight as she prepares to repeat a line about herself which is apparent she often does: “I like to describe myself as a nurse by intent and a Baroness by astonishment.” Having worked in the medical field as well as in education, Caroline brought with her much experience to her position in the British

the recipient of the Mother Teresa Award in 2005, although to hear her talk, one would think she is merely an assistant recently signed on. At a volunteer’s reception in Westminster where she reports on the recent developments of the projects HART is financing and facilitating around the world, she speaks of the indigenous doctors, workers, and leaders from these war-torn nations who daily risk their lives to carry out their work. “They’re the real heroes,” she states, again making it clear that she feels genuinely honored to be able to do what she is doing. As for what she does, HART exists as a means of reaching the forgotten peoples of the world with much-needed relief and support. Often suffering from religious or ethnic persecution, people groups in Africa, Asia, and beyond endure immense hardships brought on by war or natural disaster. Making matters worse, they are often trapped behind closed borders – outside the reach of the

Red Cross or other aid groups, which are restricted by complex international law. Being minute by comparison, HART is able to maneuver through such large-scale bureaucracy and bring help to those who otherwise would go without any. It doesn’t hurt that HART’s founder isn’t afraid to break a few bad rules for a good cause either. Caroline and her team have been shot at by hostile ruling governments and regularly risk their lives in order to personally witness the effects of genocidal atrocities and bring back a first-hand report. Caroline also has a word of advice for rogue dictators who oppose her intervention in their pirated territories: “Don’t make it illegal to travel within your borders, and I won’t break any of your laws!” nce back in the West, the other pillar of HART comes into play – advocacy. Caroline gives voice to the voiceless and tells the stories of thousands of men, women, and children who endure unimaginable pain and injustice. Whether in active conflict zones (Burma); post-conflict areas still devastated by war (Nagorno-Karabakh, East Timor, Southern Sudan, Northern Uganda); or whether marginalized and persecuted for social and political reasons (orphaned and abandoned children in Russia; Dalits and Temple prostitutes in India) or caught in inter communal violence (Northern Nigeria); millions of innocent people find themselves off the radar screen of international media, unable to appeal to the wider world for help. But one woman’s dedication is challenging all that by generating resources for these humanitarian causes and advocating for their welfare. In addition to amassing a host of inspiring stories that astonish me as I listen to accounts of orphans reunited with their mothers and

O

young Christians holding to their faith in the face of persecution, Caroline has seen whole regions begin to change. In a world rife with immorality, irresponsibility, and ignorance, this one, amazing woman shines as a beacon of hope to those in need, and as an inspiration to those who could so easily make a difference, but rarely do. At the end of the day, two things become apparent to me: Firstly, that Caroline sees herself as merely ‘doing her part,’ and secondly, that if we all did the same, the world would be in much better condition than it is. This is not to say she hasn’t had to make sacrifices to do what she does, but given the chance, I have the feeling that she would do it all over again without wavering. And who knows… as one who gave up what could conceivably have been a lucrative career in ballroom dance, perhaps she’ll find a 3,200 square foot maple hardwood dance floor and a set of heels waiting for her on the other side of the veil. My odd meeting with Baroness Caroline Cox ends with her insisting upon giving me a lift to the underground station, which she does in her Toyota Prius, and then compelling me to take her umbrella for the rest of my journey because it looks like rain. In either case, I don’t know whether to refuse out of politeness or accept out of politeness, but in both instances find myself a willing accomplice to her kindness, as so many the world over can claim. (THE PUBLISHER’S LETTER)

NEW EVERY MORNING DEAR FRIENDS, have you ever woken up in the first hours of morning, while the earth is still blanketed in darkness, and waited for day? Every sound seems to be magnified as you stare into the darkened canvass, hoping to catch the first glimpse of dawn. At the start of this New Year, I believe many of us found ourselves straining to catch the light of day. We were eager for direction, reassurance, hope. At the start of 2011, as I meditated on God’s character, which, like the sun, never fails to rise when we need it most, I felt a fresh touch from Him. I want to bless and encourage you with some foundational truths to stand on as you approach the year ahead. No matter what you’re facing, I pray you remember the power of the One who shines like the sun.

“Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness,” (Lam 3:22-23). In a world of darkness, God is our light… Light guides. In all but the past century, those who set out to travel did so by the light of the sun. How comforting those first rays of light must have been to the weary pilgrim! Light guides us by shining on the path we are to tread. Trust God’s infinite wisdom and resolve to obey Him fully this year, as you walk where He leads. Light protects. Oftentimes, we only think of the visual effects of light, but sunlight has other characteristics as well, such as warming. The sun’s warmth serves to hold the Earth’s climate in balance, and can change a cold winter day from bitter to pleasant. I urge you to present your heart to the Lord and allow His steadfast lovingkindness to warm any areas that have been chilled by the effects of a fallen world. Light gives life. Just as the sun, the center of our solar system, gives life, the Son of God is the lifesource of every true Believer. Declare that God is your all in all, and that your provision, position, and future are entirely in His hands. Be blessed in this New Year as you walk in Him! “The sun shall no longer be your light by day, Nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you; But the LORD will be to you an everlasting light, And your God your glory,” (Isa 60:19). Shalom,
