INTERIOR DESIGN PORTFOLIO
ABOUT ME: My name is Kaitlin Oliver Lienhoop, and from a young age I was fascinated with spatial layouts. I used to draw the floor plan that my parents designed for our family home in colored markers - each room having its own color, of course - and notice how the rooms fit together to create the space that helped shape my childhood. Now, having studied the many components of interior design, I realize just how much of an impression interiors can have on people of all ages, and that good design is approached holistically. Seeing my parents’ dedication to turning their passions into careers is what has driven me to work diligently and pursue my dream of becoming an interior designer. I am inspired by people and their interaction with the built environment, and I am passionate about seeing a space live up to its full potential not only aesthetically, but also functionally.

RAWLS HALL REMODEL OBJECTIVE: Redesign the front portion of Rawls Hall on Purdue University’s campus to reflect Purdue in an exciting way to new students and alumni visiting. Incorporate at least 5 displays into the design to hold the given memorabilia from Purdue graduates. Use appropriate lighting to enhance the design and draw passersby inside.

CONCEPT: Train tunnels and underground subway stations reveal several design relationships that are used to guide the design of the frontage of Rawls Hall. A map graphic of Purdue’s campus boldly greets people behind the welcome desk and sets the tone of a school spirited “train station.” The curved ceiling panels reinforce the feeling of being confined in a tubular passage. The voids in the hanging panels create sense of speed and movement. Steel, concrete, and metal emphasize the durable material pallet of tunnels and subways. Furnishings take on cylindrical forms derived from rail vehicles. The curved concrete wall, which houses a moving lighting feature, reinforces the idea of train lights passing swiftly around a bend. CONCEPT: The design of Children’s Hospital Colorado was inspired by artist Gordon Hopkins’ youthful paintings as well as children’s art. Hopkins is known for his use of lively colors, repetition, and simple forms. He emphasizes the beauty and context of our natural surroundings and employs a sense of exploration in his work. Likewise, children tend to offer a simplified viewpoint in their brightly colored artwork, and exploration is key to their creativity. The abundance of white through the halls is to be seen as a blank sheet of paper, and the color palette and artwork added to them are acquired from artist Gordon Hopkins. CHILD PLAY PERSPECTIVE

THE GRATE OBJECTIVE: Design a multi-faceted transitional restaurant that focuses on different user zones throughout the day. Conceptualize a look and feel that emulates southern-style food in a midwestern area.

STAIRCASE PERSPECTIVE
CONCEPT: The modern and linear form of a cooking grate inspired this restaurant design. The idea of a cooking grate lends itself in the applications of a linear floor plan, industrial materials, wall and ceiling treatments, and furnishings. Stained black concrete floors allude to the singeing and charring of a cook-top and its fare. Wood, a fire-fueling material, adds warmth to the environment through its many tones. Large black pendants in the middle of the restaurant levitate at various heights and draw the eyes to the line of symmetry in the space: the stairs. Pops of red, evoking the essence of culinary flames, deliver an exciting, yet not overpowering, accent to the room. Customers experience the atmosphere of a warm gathering place for friends, family, and a meal.

CONCEPT: Connect-the-dots, with its composition of circles and lines, integrates itself into the physical design of the workplace. Next is an a&d firm that strives to connect the dots for their clients, helping them visualize and realize their ideal space in its entirety. From conception to completion, the firm seeks to build upon and connect previous experience and knowledge to its future projects and innovation. The natural material palette stems from the idea of the puzzle’s simplicity and minimalism while promoting sustainability and a connection to nature.
