2016 ASID Indiana Chapter Student Design Competition
The modern and linear form of a cooking grate inspired the design of this transitional restaurant. The idea of a cooking grate, being an important component in the ways of American cooking, lends itself in the applications of a linear floor plan, industrial materials in flooring, wall and ceiling treatments, and furnishings, and lastly the center of a warm gathering of friends and family for a meal. Stained black concrete floors, alluding to the singeing and charring of a cook-top and its fare, act as the majority of elegant flooring in the space. Wood, a fire-fueling material, adds warmth to the environment in its many tones and invites its users to take a seat under grated canopies that size portions of the space to human scale. The large black pendants in the middle of the restaurant levitate at various heights and draw the eyes to the symmetry of the main focal point of the space, the stairs. Pops of red, evoking the essence of culinary flames, deliver an exciting, yet not overpowering, accent to the room. At any spot in the eatery, diners have the advantage of a unique experience in this dynamic restaurant of Lockerbie Square, where customers are left with an All-American dining experience and flavors of the Goedekes’s Southern-styled food.
BREAKFAST/RECEPTION COUNTER PERSPECTIVE WEEKDAYS Breakfast sandwiches, coffee, & grab & go:
Bar seating caters to morning work-goers and their need for single seating and convenient outlets which are indicated by yellow circles.
Sandwiches & soups:
More two-person and four-person seating becomes available for social lunch groups.
Reception:
The grab & go area becomes the reception area for the dinner guests.
Dinner:
The entirety of the restaurant opens up to accommodate for small parties and large parties alike.
Bar:
A lower and upper bar allows customers to enjoy wine and spirits without feeling overcrowded.
WEEKENDS Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner:
All seating options are present to fit the needs of customers’ weekend schedules.
Bar:
Both bar locations become secluded later in the night as they stay open the latest, creating an intimate experience for customers on two different levels.
