JC HARMON HIGH SCHOOL
TO CREATE A 21st CENTURY LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
KAITLYN O’LEARY | PORTFOLIO 2019
FALL 2018
COMPREHENSIVE STUDIO
INSTRUCTOR: VIBHAVARI JANI + HERNAN GREGORIO
The IAPD Capstone studio collaborated with the Kansas City, Kansas school district. We received the opportunity to work with JC Harmon High School students to conceptually redesign the school based off of 21st century learning strategies. The project included focus groups with students, site visits, and extensive research into 21st century learning pedagogies. Inspiration stemmed from elements of nature: bird nests, tree houses, and beehives to help design decisions regarding spaces used for security and reflection, as well as opportunities for connection and collaboration. The design for the JC Harmon learning environments solved current issues with circulation, lighting, and furniture while accounting for future growth. The importance of creating a space of sanctuary and protection was held strong throughout the entirety of the project. LENGTH : 14 Weeks PROGRAMS : Revit Architecture, Rhinosaurus 5.0, Enscape, Photoshop, Illustrator, inDesign
SECTION | 01
PERSONAL CONTRIBUTIONS (TEAM OF 2) : Space Planning, Revit and Rhino modeling, Renderings, Graphics, Furniture and Finish Selection
CONCEPT : Through site visits and interviews with students, teachers, and administration, the designers determined the three current conditions to focus on: the circulation issues caused by the A-B classroom layout, limited daylight, and outdated and inconsistent furniture. The original high school was built for half of the current student population and when enrollment rose, walls were put up in classrooms to split them in half. This caused the A-B classroom layout where students had to walk through the A classroom to access the B classroom. This posed many problems including, but not limited to acoustic leaks, inconsistent HVAC and lighting levels. Keeping sustainability in mind, the designers researched adaptive reuse strategies and their benefits. With the intention of adding circulation the designers decided to use the method of wrapping to create the school’s new addition.

HALLWAYS AS MORE : Hallways tend to make up 40% of a school’s footprint with only the intention for circulation between class periods. The designers wanted to give the hallways additional purpose by making it an extension of the learning environment, therefore doubling the classroom size.
KAITLYN O’LEARY | PORTFOLIO 2019
To push this idea, we designed the Hive: a product with the ability to create a space within the hallway for collaboration, as well as the ability to be removed during passing time. The Hive is a grid system built into the structure that holds hexagonal stools used for seating. Backed by glass, the Hive keeps acoustical privacy and safety in mind, while creating a visual connection to the teacher while in use.
Gather
ACADEMY ORGANIZATION : The learning environments are broken up into different core academies. This allows for each core subject (math, communication arts, science, and history) to have their own sense of identity within the school. By assigning each core subject their own color, it assists in wayfinding, as well as adding visual interest to students learning environment.

Graphic walls featuring influential people in each subject matter define the main vertical circulation areas between the classrooms. The graphic walls are an example to students that success has no restrictions on countries, backgrounds, and cultures.

INSTRUCTOR: DONNA FULMER
Colony + Partners, LLC is a fast growing public law firm that decided to move their office to a new space located in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. Their mission statement ‘For the People’ was the purpose to create a forward thinking law firm with a large emphasis on community and collaboration. Client comfort, trust, and approachability were the ultimate goals for the firm. We achieved this by creating a progressive environment, taking attorneys out of the traditional private offices and integrating them with paralegals and legal administrative assistants. This gave the firm the communal, collaborative, flexible, and transparent atmosphere they were looking for. The project was conducted in 4 main phases: research, test fits, space planning, and furniture specifications. Inspiration came from the idea of transparency and community. There is existing stigma against lawyers that they are more concerned with self-promotion than their clients interests. By creating a strong connection with the community and being an ‘open book’ this project will stop the stigma. PROCESS PHASE 01: In order to understand Boston, the firm and public law, extensive research was conducted to assess the firm’s target demographic. This allowed us the opportunity to select an appropriate building, and conceptualize a functional model for efficient space planning.
PHASE 02: After isolating the most appropriate layouts for the office space, test fits of three different buildings were conducted. The final building was chosen for its historic, Boston-esque architecture and grid system created by existing columns. It fit perfectly with the ‘typical pod’ arrangement developed with the partners, attorneys, paralegals and legal administrative assistants.

The attorney’s private conference room provides a space to make private phone calls or hold private meetings, reflected by the public collaboration space. By placing the open workstations on the exterior and the glass front private offices along the core, this allows natural light to reach each private office. A variety of conference rooms are located throughout both floors to accommodate different work styles.

Keeping the architecture exposed and industrialized was a way to keep the ‘Boston’ roots of the building and company evident, but drop ceilings were developed to help with sound and wayfinding. The linear nature of the ceiling directs wayfinding and is broken up by each pod arrangement.

THE INTEGRATION OF TWO SPACES

INSTRUCTOR: NEAL HUBBLE
The main guideline of this project was to develop an integration of a restaurant and retail space utilizing a mezzanine. The essential character of the space is to embrace an outdoor urban environment and bring it indoors. Features such as exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and graffiti define the dominant architectural forms that reflect the urbanism of the space. The space planning and parti correlate with the form of a skateboard deck, being linear with curves near the ends. The custom tables, shelves, and wall elements found inspiration from the exposed structure of a skateboard, while the cash wrap and bar reflect forms found in skatepark components. LENGTH : 10 Weeks PROGRAMS : Revit Architecture, Rhinosaurus 5.0, Enscape, Photoshop, Illustrator, inDesign PERSONAL CONTRIBUTIONS (TEAM OF 1) : Space Planning, Revit and Rhino Modeling, Renderings, Diagrams, Furniture and Finish Selection.

The indoor skatepark becomes the central primary space of the building by raising the ceiling with a clerestory, lowering the floor, and capping the curved ends with glass. The apparel and skateboards are left on exposed brick allowing their designs to become artwork themselves, while graffiti is applied where merchandise is not to emphasis the urban aesthetic.

RESTAURANT
The restaurant is a quick service restaurant in the form of an indoor ‘food truck’. The kitchen is located behind the truck, acting as a front facade to give the illusion of a real restaurant on wheels.

FURNITURE DESIGN WORKSHOP II
INSTRUCTOR: ROD TROYER
The side table was a semester long project. The purpose of the project was to develop and construct a side table that could be consolodated and fit into a 22” x 12” x 6” UPS standard box. Inspiration had to be taken from a certain time period; I took inspiration from the Mid-Century Modern movement of furniture, but also with a modern twist. The clean, simple, and exposed construction of the wood reflected the ‘honest’ nature of the Mid-Century Modern style, but wanted to develop a new way of organization for books, magazines, or records using Paracord. It is universal by being able to be placed against a wall, but also in the middle of a room due to the mirrored effect of the design. FURNITURE DESIGN WORKSHOP III
INSTRUCTOR: DAVE BROWN
The bench was a semester long project. The intent with this project was to design and develop a place to sit. I wanted to reflected the same style in the project ‘Stitch 01’ by creating another piece of bedroom furniture; a bench for the foot of the bed. Inspiration was taken from similar concepts, but with an elegant, scandanavian aesthetic. My main inspiration was the mid centery modern telephone table, encorporating a place to sit as well as a side table. Like ‘Stitch 01’, the clean, simple, and exposed construction of the wood reflected the ‘honest’ nature of the Mid-Century Modern style, but utilizing the Paracord for the seat instead of storage. It is universal by being able to be placed against the foot of the bed or wall, but also in the middle of a room due to the mirrored effect of the design. The steel cable holds each side of the bench in tension, but lets the Paracord be stitched through the front and back, as well as wrapped around the steel cable. This allows for the seat made by the Paracord to form to the users body, emphasizing structure and comfort.
