In 1917, by releveling and uniting the region 's vast inland freshwater lakes and rivers, the Ballard Locks forever changed the landscape and economy of Seattle. At the same time, our seas are rising, the climate is warming, and all life is suffering from industrial pollution and unsustainable resource extraction. By cutting a canal from Salmon Bay to Smith Cove, lnterbay Pass first provides a redundant and complementary alternative to the Ballard Locks. In turn, it also offers Seattle an opportunity to rebuild this 'dead zone' of an urban neighborhood into a catalyst that can reframe its industrial ecosystem for the next 100 years . Our design exp/orations illustrate the potential for the Pass to also ground new and existing dense, urban live-work neighborhoods with stronger and forward-looking ecological and community connections.
