Micro-Beijing Teahouse design Location: Beijing, China Type: Culture/Interior Individual Work
The play Teahouse by Laoshe pictures the changes of society in a peirod of Chinese history by depicting a single scene at a teahouse. Inspired by the show, the project aims to build an inclusive space to create a miniature of the traditional atmosphere of old Beijing. With the site located on the edge of the old hutong area and facing the massive new structure, I propose a teahouse which is a stage to present the breath of life of the traditions in Beijing. The volume is a transition between the old and new city pattern. It shapes in an appropriate scale to fit in the hutong texture. A light structure floats on the top to respond to the big volumes around and make itself a landmark in the neighbourhood. The project also tries to challenge fitting the functions in small scale. By applying a basic unit of 2.5m cube, the project provides a homogeneous space that can offer more possibilites for the composition of activites. Each unit is a smallest space for one activity.

Cube and Tea Box The tea area on the first floor spread horizontally with a sunken space and a yard. Activities are organized as a market place on one side facing it. The transparent cube on the top stretch the space on a different direction. The blue tea box is the tea area surrounded by a three-dimension market. The cube and the sunken space overlap each other on a 2.5m unit, indicating the continuity of the tea space. Tea areas thus are connected and flows on both directions and interact with the market activities physically and visually.
