Dream of house a reality Mine commended for bringing stability to Postmasburg Boipelo Mere IT was a dream come true for Azetta Townson (31), an employee at the Kolomela Mine, to be given an opportunity to buy her first house, a double-storey house, through the mine’s Social Labour Plan Project two years ago. As an administration assistant at the mine, she is one of the 718 local community employees who are an integral part of the mine, who got the opportunity to buy standard houses that Anglo American was reported to have invested an amount of R1 million in. The mining company partnered with the Tsantsabane Local Municipality, that allocated land in Postmasburg for the construction of the houses, making Townson’s dream of becoming a homeowner come true. As part of an integrated approach that allowed the houses to form part of the current community without creating a separate mining town, the project was further reported to have addressed housing challenges within the local municipality. She moved from her single-storey home in Postdene, where she grew up, into her own 120 m² house consisting of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, with other comforts like ceilings, air conditioning and solar heating. “Now I have my own big house. It was a blessing for me to be able to support myself and raise my first child in a very different and better environment compared to mine when I was her age,” she said proudly. The young mother was also visited by the minister of Mineral Resources, Ngoako Ramahlodi, on 9 April during the launch of the housing project. According to the CEO of the Kolomela Mine, Norman Mbazima, the housing project not only created employment for approximately 3 000 semi-skilled and skilled professionals, but had been so successful that it was awarded the provincial and national Govan Mbeki Award from the

Lede van die skool se uitvoerende komitee (UK) het bo en behalwe die gewone skool-druk, ekstra leierskapsverantwoordelikhede om die jaar aan te pak. Kalahari Bulletin het by drie van die skool se UK-lede gaan uitvind hoe hulle hul matriekjaar ervaar en wat hulle planne vir die res van 2015 is. Stefaans van der Walt, voorsitter van die UK, erken dat die akademiese tempo baie in matriek versnel. “Dit is baie belangrik om genoeg ekstra tyd ná skool aan jou studie te bestee,” sê hy. Stefaans speel tans in die skool se eerste seunshokkiespan. Hy noem dat hoewel sport ’n belangrike deel van sy skoolloopbaan is, sy akademie nou ’n groter rol as sport speel. Hy is vol lof vir sy mede-UK-lede oor die

bydraes wat hulle vir die skool maak. “Ons het die jaar die regte span om die skool tot nuwe hoogtes te neem. Ek wil graag al die leerlinge kry om die skool se akademiese, sport- en kultuurpresteerders 100% te ondersteun.” Denisha Dippenaar, die ondervoorsitter van die UK, sê dat sy in die eerste kwartaal hard moes werk om by alles uit te kom. Sy speel die jaar eerstespanhokkie en noem dat ’n aktiewe leefstyl ’n positiewe rol in haar akademiese prestasie speel. Haar resep vir sukses is soos volg: “Vertrou te alle tye op God en lewe positief en voluit!” Mar-Louise Pretorius, die UK-raad se sekretaresse, sê dat die jaar se akademie ’n bietjie moeiliker as die vorige jare s’n is. “Maar ek byt vas en werk hard en sal so met my akademie deurdruk!” Mar-Louise speel netbal en sê dat die sport haar die geleentheid gee om haarself op die baan te wees en help sodoende baie met stres. Sy noem dat effektiewe tydsbestuur noodsaaklik vir ’n suksesvolle matriekjaar is.

advanced life support paramedic. “Daily I work with patients who sustained minor injuries in an accident and patients with severe life-threatening injuries,” he says. “On a fairly normal day we might attend to two accidents and possibly two transfers to hospitals in Kimberley. On a busy day we attend to three to four accidents and a possible three to four transfers to Kimberley,” he says. Upon arriving at an accident scene he quickly checks to see how many people were involved in the accident and what type of injuries they sustained. His colleagues will assist and attend to the patients

His passion is his work as a specialised, advanced life-support paramedic and he is also manager of the AeroCare ambulances. He sleeps a few hours per night and is always on call. Sello Tsoaela started his studies to be a paramedic at the Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein. In 2012 he worked as a lecturer a the Free State College of Medical Care. He also worked in Kroonstad as an operational

Fight for real change SOUTH AFRICAN statues and their relevance are currently a rallying point to which pro-transformation disciples flock. The removal of the Cecil John Rhodes statue from the University of Cape Town (UCT) campus started a renewed cry for transformation in South Africa. Unfortunately, the purity of this newfound passion is tainted by those who have no idea of what the true purpose of transformation should be. The statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Durban was brazenly defaced by a group of “transformation-activists”. Ghandi is globally hailed as a pioneer in social transformation, which he achieved by being a living example of positive change. But is it really the country’s statues that stand in the way of true transformation? Surely an inanimate object does not dictate the rate or success of South Africa’s political, financial and social transformation. Those who now so fervently want to achieve transformation through removal and vandalism of the country’s statues will perhaps make a more sustainable impact if they focus on the true transformation obstacles. The country’s real transformational issues are not made of bronze and concrete. Would the energy and passion behind the youth’s hatred of the country’s statues not be better used in protesting the behaviour of some of the leaders of

this country? Rather demand transformation in the current living standards in South Africa. A statue does not have the power to change anything, but a government does. For the past 22 years South Africans have been living in a democracy, yet there are still voters living in squalor. Transform the way we as a country look at violence against women and children. Think of the impact a demonstration like the #RhodesMustFall protest will have if it could be done in the name of something more worthy, like standing up for the vulnerable citizens of South Africa. A statue cannot steal money. But corrupt politicians can, and do every day. It would mean so much more if the thousands of students involved in this statue protest would stand as one and rather demand transformation in matters that can still be remedied. We as a country have a talent for protesting. Can we not at least use it to fight relevant and current transformation issues? Removing a statue will not cure poverty, stop a rape from occurring or stem corruption. If anything should be removed, it is the rotten elements in current South African politics, social development, service delivery and moral behaviour. South Africa as a whole should focus on transforming in a way that will create a better future for all its citizens.

Frost cloth keeps plants protected Peter Fischer WINTER is coming. And here in Kathu and its surrounding areas it usually means extreme cold spells and frost. This is not good news for garden enthusiasts who spend a lot of time, effort and money on their gardens. The damage that the extreme cold weather can do to a garden is sometimes irreparable. It is necessary for those who treasure their gardens to start preparing for the cold by protecting their delicate plants.

There are several indigenous trees that are frost resistant and will survive the winter without protection. These trees include the carob tree, wild olive tree and the bay leaf. These trees are deciduous and will lose their leaves during the winter. This is not necessarily a bad thing because it gives the garden lots of sunshine during the cold season. Hardy shrubs like the purple-leaved sand olive, the pink butterfly bush and green sand olive will also endure the cold weather. Frost cloth is an essential tool

in protecting delicate plants. Protective frost cloth can be bought at any good nursery. Frost cloth does not prevent the plant to “breathe” and can be left on the plant for the duration of the winter. Young plants are especially sensitive to the cold. A peg should be placed next to the plant with the tip higher than the plant shoot. The frost cloth is then folded over the peg and plant to form a shelter. Aloes are also sensitive to frosty weather and would benefit from frost cloth.

Elkeen van hulle het ’n groot liefde vir kinders. Die opvoeders is betrokke by die leerlinge en gee werklik om wat in hul lewe aangaan.” ’n Baie belangrike punt waarop ouers ook moet let, is die veiligheid, reëls en regulasies van die kleuterskool. “Maak seker dat die kleuterskool ’n geakkrediteerde skool is.” Daar is vroeër die jaar ontstellend

Ons kinders se veiligheid is vir ons baie belangrik. Dit moet so by elke skool wees,” sê Page.

‘Ballade’ boei nog Jurg Slabbert DIE diep kant van ’n swembad het my as kind altyd bang gemaak; grotendeels omdat ek skrikkerig was vir die Kreepy Krauly wat my soos ’n blou slang met sy “tjiek-tjiek”-klanke sou opsuig. Maar toe breek die dag aan dat ek in die diep kant inspring. “Spring! Moenie dink nie, doen dit net!” het my suster een somermiddag geskree. Ek het op die swembad se rand gaan staan en skepties na die Kreepy gekyk.

“As jy inspring, gee ek jou R1,” het my pa laat hoor. Binne oomblikke was ek in die water; Kreepy Krauly se voet. Dertig minute later was die vriendelike Chinese kafee-eienaar R1 ryker en het ek die winkel met ’n sak loslekkers verlaat. Ja, die idee van loslekkers, eerder as die filosofiese kreet, “moenie dink nie, doen net,” het my aangespoor. Dié slagspreuk, sinoniem met die destydse TV-reeks Ballade vir ’n Enkeling, word gebruik om die gelyknamige rolprent te bemark.

Ek vermoed die rolprent gaan ’n wegholsukses wees. Hoekom? Nostalgie. Nostalgie se tydsberekening is byna altyd onvanpas. Dit klop aan jou voordeur soos ’n onverwagte laatnaggas. Jy besef dat jy nie van die gas ontslae gaan raak nie en nooi hom maar binne. “Gaan kry jy die bottel wyn en sit. Ek sal die herinneringe gaan opdiep,” sou ek sê. Dan kuier julle om die tafel en word dronk op vervloë dae se stories. Wat is die nostalgie wat Suid-Afrikaners met Ballade assosieer? Vir my was dit ’n kombinasie van die aantreklike held Jacques Rynhard en sy komplekse lewensverhaal wat menige pre-adolessente tienermeisie (en seun) voor die kassie vasgenael gehou het. Dit was weeklikse familiegeheime en storiekinkels met onderstrominge van die liefde en ’n voshaarnooi. Ek erken dat ek skepties oor remakes is. Hoekom moet jy met ’n ou wenresep gaan peuter? Veral met ’n klassieke storie soos dié? Moet ’n mens dan nie juis ’n nuwe generasie die kans gun om dit op sý manier te ontdek nie. Skool presteer goed DIE Laerskool Kathu skroom nie om sy leerlinge tot nuwe akademiese hoogtes te neem nie. Dit is bewys toe die skool in vier vakke in die 2014Conquesta-olimpiade onder die 20 toppresteerders geëindig het. Die Conquesta-olimpiade is ’n internasionale toetsvlak wat in 1998 gestig is. Laerskole van onder meer Suid-Afrika, Botswana, Namibia en Swaziland neem aan die olimpiade deel. Die Conquesta-olimpiade se doel is vir onderwysers om hul leerlinge se akademiese standaard in verskillende vakke met dié van ander skole en die nasionale standaard te kan meet. Die olimpiade moedig so onderwysers, ouers en leerlinge aan om hul volle akademiese potensiaal te ontgin. Altesaam 96 leerlinge van die Laerskool Kathu het vraestelle in verskeie vakke voltooi. Die skool se uitslae is soos volg: Die gr. 4-leerlinge behaal ’n algehele 19de plek in die afdeling vir Afrikaans eerste taal en ’n 16de plek in lewensvaardighede 2 (skeppend). Die gr. 5-leerlinge behaal ’n 16de plek in die afdeling Afrikaans eerste taal, terwyl die gr. 7-leerlinge ’n 12de plek in dié afdeling behaal het. Die Laerskool Kathu sal vanjaar weer aan hierdie olimpiade deelneem.

Event shows off fitness

KATHU played host to some of South Africa’s top body building athletes during the 2015 Kathu Classics Body Building Event. Top body builders from across the country came together on 4 April at the Kalahari Country Club (KCC) in Kathu to show off their hard work and fitness skills. Altogether 75 body builders entered the competition. A total of 15 local athletes from Kathu, Kuruman and Postmasburg also competed in the prestigious competition. The competition started early in the morning with several weigh-ins and pre-judging competitions, with the main event that evening.
