Paasfees luisterryk met opname gevier RADIO RIVERSIDE het vanjaar die 13de keer ’n interkerklike kerkdiens aangebied om die Sewe Woorde van die Kruis op te neem. Vanjaar het dié kerkdiens op Sondag 29 Maart plaasgevind. Tydens die kerkdiens is kerkleiers en gemeentes van oor die //Khara Hais-munisipaliteit heen saamgebring om die opname te maak. Vanjaar is die kerkdiens en opname in die Metodiste- Episkopaalse kerk van Afrika in Paballelo aangebied. Die stampvol kerk het getuig hoe gewild die kerklike projek is en die liedere van die verskillende kerke het die kerk gevul. Samantha Titus, voorsitter van die Radio Riverside-raad, het gesê dié kerkdiens tydens Paasfees bewys dat Upington se bevolking in die algemeen nog baie naby aan Christus leef. “Dis hoekom so baie kerke bereid is om die projek te ondersteun,” het sy gesê. Die opgeneemde kerkdiens is op Goeie Vrydag 3 April van 06:00 tot 09:00 uitgesaai sodat mense wat nie ’n kerkdiens kon bywoon nie, nogtans deel kon wees van die Paasvieringe.

advanced life support paramedic. “Daily I work with patients who sustained minor injuries in an accident and patients with severe life-threatening injuries,” he says. “On a fairly normal day we might attend to two accidents and possibly two transfers to hospitals in Kimberley. On a busy day we attend to three to four accidents and a possible three to four transfers to Kimberley,” he says. Upon arriving at an accident scene he quickly checks to see how many people were involved in the accident and what type of injuries they sustained. His colleagues will assist and attend to the patients

HE checks his equipment every morning and every evening to ensure he is ready to save a life. His passion is his work as a specialised, advanced life-support paramedic and he is also manager of the AeroCare ambulances. He sleeps a few hours per night and is always on call. Sello Tsoaela started his studies to be a paramedic at the Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein. In 2012 he worked as a lecturer a the Free State College of Medical Care. He also worked in Kroonstad as an operational

Tsoaela’s bag of equipment contains every possible tool to enable him to handle any emergency. “Any accident can be gruesome. I have to distance myself emotionally and focus on the job at hand. Fight for real change SOUTH AFRICAN statues and their relevance are currently a rallying point to which pro-transformation disciples flock. The removal of the Cecil John Rhodes statue from the University of Cape Town (UCT) campus started a renewed cry for transformation in South Africa. Unfortunately, the purity of this newfound passion is tainted by those who have no idea of what the true purpose of transformation should be. The statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Durban was brazenly defaced by a group of “transformation-activists”. Ghandi is globally hailed as a pioneer in social transformation, which he achieved by being a living example of positive change. But is it really the country’s statues that stand in the way of true transformation? Surely an inanimate object does not dictate the rate or success of South Africa’s political, financial and social transformation. Those who now so fervently want to achieve transformation through removal and vandalism of the country’s statues will perhaps make a more sustainable impact if they focus on the true transformation obstacles. The country’s real transformational issues are not made of bronze and concrete. Would the energy and passion behind the youth’s hatred of the country’s statues not be better used in protesting the behaviour of some of the leaders of

this country? Rather demand transformation in the current living standards in South Africa. A statue does not have the power to change anything, but a government does. For the past 22 years South Africans have been living in a democracy, yet there are still voters living in squalor. Transform the way we as a country look at violence against women and children. Think of the impact a demonstration like the #RhodesMustFall protest will have if it could be done in the name of something more worthy, like standing up for the vulnerable citizens of South Africa. A statue cannot steal money. But corrupt politicians can, and do every day. It would mean so much more if the thousands of students involved in this statue protest would stand as one and rather demand transformation in matters that can still be remedied. We as a country have a talent for protesting. Can we not at least use it to fight relevant and current transformation issues? Removing a statue will not cure poverty, stop a rape from occurring or stem corruption. If anything should be removed, it is the rotten elements in current South African politics, social development, service delivery and moral behaviour. South Africa as a whole should focus on transforming in a way that will create a better future for all its citizens.

The letter wasn’t written to the pastor, but “to the saints and faithful brethren in Christ.” (1:2) Believers who serve others grow much quicker and stronger in the Lord, than those who only focus on themselves.

Die Uppies wil dus probeer om tydens Omgeeweek 6 000 soetkoekies, soutkoekies, beskuit en enige ander nie-bederfbare koekies in te samel om aan kankerpasiënte te gee. Die graadgroepe gaan onder

mekaar meeding om te kyk watter graad die meeste koekies kan insamel. Tydens die omgeeweek gaan die Uppies onder meer toegespreek word en na ’n videovertoning kyk. Op Woensdag 22 April gaan die hele skool pienk aantrek en bandanas dra ter ondersteuning van Pienk-Pieter-dag. Pieter la Cock, ’n gr. 9-leerling, is in 2014 met kanker gediagnoseer en die hele skool wil hom met Pienk-Pieter-dag ondersteun. Dié dag gaan afgesluit word met ’n opwindende fliek-aand vir al die Uppies. Verskeie ander pretaktiwiteite sal ook gedurende die week plaasvind.

Reën bring lafenis Meris Kocks IN Rietfontein het die sluise van die hemel op 8 April behoorlik oopgemaak en die hele omgewing is deurdrenk. ’n Donderstorm het vir 30 minute lank ’n sterk wind, stortreën en hael oor Rietfontein laat woed. Gelukkig is geen skade aangerig nie en het die storm noodsaaklike verligting ná die warm somer gebring. Reën word hier baie waardeer omdat die omgewing so afhanklik is van die bietjie reën wat jaarliks val. Ná die storm het die son weer heerlik geskyn en het die mense uit hul huise gestorm en die watermassa terdeë geniet.

DIE water stroom voor Petrus Willemse se huis verby. Die water lê bykans soos ’n dam in sy erf.

‘Ballade’ boei nog Jurg Slabbert DIE diep kant van ’n swembad het my as kind altyd bang gemaak; grotendeels omdat ek skrikkerig was vir die Kreepy Krauly wat my soos ’n blou slang met sy “tjiek-tjiek”-klanke sou opsuig. Maar toe breek die dag aan dat ek in die diep kant inspring. “Spring! Moenie dink nie, doen dit net!” het my suster een somermiddag geskree. Ek het op die swembad se rand gaan staan en skepties na die Kreepy gekyk.

“As jy inspring, gee ek jou R1,” het my pa laat hoor. Binne oomblikke was ek in die water; Kreepy Krauly se voet. Dertig minute later was die vriendelike Chinese kafee-eienaar R1 ryker en het ek die winkel met ’n sak loslekkers verlaat. Ja, die idee van loslekkers, eerder as die filosofiese kreet, “moenie dink nie, doen net,” het my aangespoor. Dié slagspreuk, sinoniem met die destydse TV-reeks Ballade vir ’n Enkeling, word gebruik om die gelyknamige rolprent te bemark.

Ek vermoed die rolprent gaan ’n wegholsukses wees. Hoekom? Nostalgie. Nostalgie se tydsberekening is byna altyd onvanpas. Dit klop aan jou voordeur soos ’n onverwagte laatnaggas. Jy besef dat jy nie van die gas ontslae gaan raak nie en nooi hom maar binne. “Gaan kry jy die bottel wyn en sit. Ek sal die herinneringe gaan opdiep,” sou ek sê. Dit was weeklikse familiegeheime en storiekinkels met onderstrominge van die liefde en ’n voshaarnooi. Ek erken dat ek skepties oor remakes is. Hoekom moet jy met ’n ou wenresep gaan peuter? Veral met ’n klassieke storie soos dié? Moet ’n mens dan nie juis ’n nuwe generasie die kans gun om dit op sý manier te ontdek nie. Jonges geniet gholf terdeë Lizette Slabber COBUS DUVENHAGE-BOUERS se vakansiegholfontwikkelingsprogram is van 7 tot 9 April by die Upington-gholfklub aangebied. Die vakansieprogram word elke vakansie in samewerking met die departement van sport, kuns en kultuur en die Desert Palacecasino aangebied. Die meeste kinders nog het dié vakansieprogram bygewoon. Altesaam 42 kinders tussen die ouderdomme van vier en 15 het oor die drie dae leer gholf speel. Volgens Edwin Boer, organiseerder en afrigter, kon die program vir langer as drie dae aangebied word. “Die kinders het dit vreeslik geniet en as hulle hul sin kon kry, het ons vir baie langer aangehou.” Tydens dié vakansieprogram

het Boer ook probeer om die ouers van die klein gholfspelertjies betrokke te kry. Die laaste dag is afgesluit met ’n ouerkind-setperkkompetisie waartydens ouerkind-spanne teen mekaar gespeel het om te kyk watter span die minste houe nodig het om die bal in die gatjie te slaan. Dié kompetisie is aangebied om ouers meer betrokke by hul kinders se sportontwikkeling te kry. “Dit is al bewys dat as ouers betrokke is by hul kind se sport, kinders beter in die sport vaar,” het Boer gesê. In die ouderdomsgroep vir 9- tot 15-jariges is Desmond van der Walt as die wenner aangewys, met Jano Malan in die tweede plek en Grant Brandt derde. In die ouderdomsgroep 5 tot 8 jaar was Deelwen Brandt eerste, Janco de Beer tweede en Joshua Visagie derde. JJ Jansen en sy ma, Karen, was die wenners van die ouer-kind-kompetisie en Maxwell Smith is aangewys as die speler wat die beste tydens die program gevorder het.

TWEE leerlinge van die Hoërskool Upington het aan die o.19- provinsiale rolbaltoernooi in Bloemfontein deelgeneem. Die twee broers, Cobus en Wihan Fourie, is tans onderskeidelik in gr. 8 en gr. 11. Die toernooi het van 7 tot 10 April plaasgevind.

Velties blink uit SKUTS van die Hoërskool Duineveld het baie goed gevaar op die eerste Noord-Kaapse ligabyeenkoms vir skiet. In die o.14-veergeweerafdeling het Adriaan van Blerk goue medaljes in die 10 m-staanposisie en in die drie-posisie-afdeling behaal. Tersia van Sittert het ’n silwermedalje in die 10 m-staanposisie en ’n bronsmedalje in die drie-posisie verower. Ryno van Blerk het ’n bronsmedalje in die 10 m-staanposisie en ’n silwer in die drie-posisie losgeskiet. In die o.16-veergeweerafdeling het Heloise Drotskie goue medaljes in die 10 m-staanposisie en in die drie-posisie

gewen. Dirkie Human het silwermedaljes in die 10 m-staanposisie en in die drie-posisie gewen. In die o.21-veergeweerafdeling het Johan van Blerk ’n bronsmedalje in die 10 m-staanposisie en ’n silwermedalje in die drie-posisie gewen. In die o.21-sportgeweerafdeling het Lenika Daubern ’n silwermedalje in die 10 m-staanposisie en ’n bronsmedalje in die drie-posisie verower. Die eerste skietliga-byeenkoms het op 6 en 7 Maart in Upington plaasgevind. Skuts van skole van oor die NoordKaap heen het aan die byeenkoms deelgeneem.
