A pornographic website that was playing off the University of Hawai‘i name to feature “hot nude Hawaiian college girlsâ€? has been deactivated after receiving a legal warning from the university. “The public associates ‘universityofhawaii’ with the University of Hawai‘i name and purpose, and it is clear that you are using this name and its association misleadingly and/or for improper purposes, and in bad faith,â€? read a Feb. 3 email sent to the webmaster of universityofhawaii.xxx by Darolyn Lendio, vice president for legal affairs and university general counsel. The email also threatened legal action for the afďŹ liation of the site with the University of Hawai‘i. On Feb. 9, universityofhawaii. xxx was disabled. But school ofďŹ cials did not feel that the website would do much damage to the university’s reputation. “The University of Hawai‘i believes that, in general, most members of the public are likely to understand that no .xxx site is actually

associated with a legitimate college or university,â€? said Lynne Waters, associate vice president of external affairs and university relations. The .xxx sufďŹ x became available in late 2011, supported by the International Foundation for Online Responsibility. The IFFOR cultivated the idea as a way to distinguish and block pornographic websites for those who wish to do so. The University of Hawai‘i was advised that if it did not pur-

chase the website for a price of approximately $100 per year, it would be made available to the public. UH was informed that the .xxx suffix could fall into the pornography realm, but declined to make the purchase. Several other universities around the nation bought .xxx websites with their names in order to avoid this situation. In some cases, universities bought various versions for thousands of dollars to protect their images.

A ďŹ re broke out at approximately 8 a.m. Sunday on campus near the Athletics Complex in Building 171 (in section D), a portable that serves as the ďŹ scal management and procurement ofďŹ ce. The portable, which is over 30 years old and wooden in structure, houses ďŹ scal management data for the entire University of Hawai‘i System. Though the ames were previously controlled, the ďŹ re started again at approximately 11 a.m. “They weren’t able to extinguish [the ďŹ re] in the roof be-

cause there’s a drop ceiling, so it’s hard to access it from inside of the building. So I guess the wind and the wood just added to it, so it started up again,â€? said UH spokesman Gregg Takayama. The extent of the loss of data is currently unknown. “We won’t know until we’re able to get in there and ďŹ nd out what’s recoverable,â€? shared Takayama. What is Pow Wow? Pow Wow is a weeklong celebration of urban art that features a variety of different mediums. Artists from around the world will be participating. Christa Wittmier, senior director of special events and promotions, said, “The event is also unique because it does grow so much with each one. It’s by far one of the most organically growing events I’ve ever seen.” Among the several sponsors for this event are 808 Urban, Arrested Motion, Mass Appeal and the YMCA. Wittmier added, “The landscapes, the food, the nightlife, the people, the art, the music. We’re going to see all of that.”

Pow Wow artists to hold UH discussion panel A LVIN PARK Associate Features Editor

Following the kickoff of Pow Wow Hawai‘i 2012, a discussion panel featuring international street artists will be held at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Art Auditorium to merge ideas of media, art and community. “Pow Wow is all about involving the community and reaching out to students looking to learn more and be inspired by art and [the] industry,” said Jeffrey Gress, an intern and organizer for Pow Wow Hawai‘i. The discussion will involve a multicultural group of artists who span a variety of disciplines, including writers, artists and designers. The street artists on the panel will discuss their experiences with starting their own businesses or boutiques and working for a myriad of brands. But the larger objective, Gress said, is to foster an awareness of how art plays into all those accomplishments. “The concept of the panel is to discuss how these fields are related and how they affect the community, both micro (local) and macro (the Internet),” he said. The discussion panel will feature artists and speakers such as Jeff Hamada (artist and founder of Booooooom.com), Eugene Kan (managing editor of Hypebeast in Hong Kong), Ken Harman (owner of Spoke Art Gallery in San Francisco) and Frank Liew (founder and owner of New Zealand boutique Qubic). Adhering to Pow Wow Hawai‘i lead director Jasper Wong’s vision to create an event that exposes internationally recognized street artists to the public, organizers hope that the event will show audiences the important role art plays in society. “Students who study art learn to express themselves through a vernacular that is visual as well as verbal,” Gress said. “By educating students [with] new approaches and viewpoints, we enable a greater platform for self-expression.”

Confessions of a sculptor M ARIA K ANAI Features Editor Nicole Naone, a 24-year-old BFA student at the University of Hawai‘i at MÄ noa, has a studio in the Art Building that’s as eclectic as her personality. Cluttered with headphones, canvas pieces, clay sculptures, melted crayons and a South Korean ag, the room speaks volumes of the experimental, candid artist who will be participating in the weeklong Pow Wow event. “I don’t remember not doing art,â€? said Naone. “Like I have to breathe, eat, sleep ‌ I don’t think I have a choice of whether I do it or not.â€? With commissions already under her belt, Naone dabbles in a wide range of styles that allow her to create pieces for different customers. “I’m just lucky in that I haven’t been pegged as any one thing,â€? she said. One of her most recent works, a largescale line drawing, was featured in Mark Kushimi’s Art & D show at The Human Imagination downtown. However, she declares sculpture to be her favorite. “If I could make a living just doing sculpture, I would – and I hope that at some point I can,â€? she said. Naone also models, a job that she keeps separate

from her art. “I’m definitely trying to phase it out,â€? she said with a wry smile, recalling art shows where she has been mistaken as a model rather than the artist. “A sculpture says my name on it, and I’ll literally have people come up to me and go, ‘Are you a model? Is it your birthday?’â€? As an up-and-coming female artist, she has often met skepticism from both artists and audiences due to ďŹ erce competition in Hawai‘i.

“[The art scene] is predominantly homosexuals, and I’m a heterosexual,â€? she said. “It’s predominantly white people, I’m Puerto Rican [and] Hawaiian. It’s predominantly rich people, I’m like the poorest person I know. And when you get into sculpture, it’s all guys.â€? She has even been accused by her own art department of not making her own work. “I don’t look like somebody who cut up over 2,000 pieces of wood and made a table, you know? That’s not what it looks like.â€? Despite the hardships, Naone has tough skin – she credits modeling – and draws inspiration from her family, friends and the world. She considers the teachers in the BFA program her best resources. “Bug your professors and demand to be taught,â€? she advised. “I don’t care if they’re tired, or if they’re old; they know more than we will know for a while. So bug ’em.â€? At the end of the day, she is humble and honest enough to recognize she is still learning. “My work is more experiments, and trial and error for what’s to come,â€? she said, describing her overall artistic style. “I hope I don’t just ďŹ nd one thing and just beat it to death and be painting whales on the side of the building for the rest of my life. I don’t want to be ‘that’ girl. I always hope I can evolve.â€?

Why didn’t you come back after the summer?” “He didn’t ask me to stay,” Nancy says defensively, then continues softly: “And I was afraid Grandma was right.” Debbie pursues: “But you got back together? Why?” “Child, child” she said, “I owed him because he didn’t try to talk me out of London and now I was a single mom and he was good to us. He adopted you.” Debbie tears up, “Yes, Yes I remember he called me his little princess and made me feel like a real daughter not a step daughter.” Nancy continues, “and he paid for your prep school, college and wedding.” “And your Jaguar” Debbie stabs back. Nancy acknowledges, “And that too.” “Why did you go your separate ways, again” Inquires Debbie, pensively. “You were grown and graduated and I got tired of being sad and afraid when he was off in some far off scary place with an alphabet name, Alphabet-e-stan this or that or a third Alphabetestan,” moans Nancy. “But he was a Civil Servant now not a Sky Soldier,” contradicts Debbie. Nancy swears an expletive, “Civil Service my aaaa-apron! He was still in the Foreign Service, still a sky soldier except in an Armani suit. I needed to get on with my life and it was my turn to let him finish his adventure. I should have expected it, from a guy, born on the Fourth of July.”

Debbie is afraid to ask the next question, “Mom, when did you stop loving him?” Nancy cries: “I never stopped loving him, I still love him, and I will always love him.” Debbie is perplexed and asks, “Why?” Nancy straightens up and says emphatically, “He was a Sky Soldier,” and then more emphatically, “He was MY sky soldier!” Debbie almost collapses then composes herself and literally runs outside to where she left her dad in the garden and grabs his hand pulling him gently and yet purposely him further into the garden. She stops him and faces him and whispers, “Dad, you know I’m pregnant?” “Yes….. Congratulations…… Little Princess,” Dad whispers back. Father and daughter look at each other speaking without speaking. Dad smiles approvingly. “Dad, Dad” Debbie blurts out then hesitates and continues nervously, “May…I have your Wings?” Sky Soldier’s gaze wanders off to a far, far away time and place and he looks back at Debbie. Emotion overcomes him as he searches for words, “Why? …..Are you sure….Do you know what you are asking?” Debbie no longer hesitates, “Yes Daddy! …..they are for my son…and you are my DAD and I love you.” Debbie pauses. “YOU are MY sky soldier!” That’s the way Debbie tells her son that she remembers the two conversations that so shaped her. She also remembers being afraid to ask him that last question, ten years ago. “Do you ever think about it? ..... Would you have changed anything? Was it all worth it?” Today, on July 4th on his birthday call he gave her the answer. “Yes, Little Princess. I think about it a lot. It was all worth it. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.”

Senior center Vander Joaquim has scored in the double digits in all of Hawai‘i’s WAC contests so far.

Unfortunately for the University of Hawai‘i men’s basketball team (14-10, 6-4 WAC), its chances of being Western Athletic Conference champions are over. The Rainbow Warriors can still hope to tie fi rst-place Nevada (21-4, 10-1 WAC) for the best record in the WAC, but conference tiebreaker rules would give the Wolf Pack the title due to its two head-to-head victories. With the WAC title out of reach, this leaves the fourth-place Rainbow Warriors in a race for second with New Mexico State (18-8, 7-3 WAC) and Idaho (15-11, 7-4 WAC). Despite being in the middle of such a close race for the second seed in the WAC Tournament, the ’Bows will take a break from conference play for their next two games to face two vastly different opponents. Senior guard Zane Johnson believes that this break in schedule will ultimate-

ly benefit his team. “It’s just good for us to play other teams out of conference and to see what they got – and also [to have] the possibility to get two more wins,” he said.

New Orleans has a better record than Hawai‘i; however, it is only 3-8 on the road and 1- 6 against Division I opponents. Even worse for the Privateers, those six losses have been by an average of 33.7 points.

G R I Z Z LY H U N T I N G Following its matchup with the Privateers, UH will head over to Missoula, Mo., to take on Montana (19-6, 12-1 Big Sky) as part of ESPN’s Sears BracketBusters event. The Grizzlies are currently riding an eight-game winning streak and will have a

week of rest before they defend their home court against upset-minded Hawai‘i.

Despite these games not counting towards the Rainbow Warriors’ conference standings, they can still help UH as the date of the WAC Tournament inches closer. Johnson said, “[It’s good] to get our confidence up and work on some things, and to continue to get better for the WAC Tournament.” With both games rapidly approaching, the Rainbow Warriors and head coach Gib Arnold now have to prepare for both teams with a limited amount of time. “Honestly, I don’t know a whole lot about either of them yet,” said Arnold. That refusal to overlook its conference opponents in favor of games that cannot affect its standings paid dividends for UH, as it beat the Bulldogs 62-58 and is now one win closer to that number-two seed.

At 6 foot 2, senior diver Douglas Cohen is not your average-size diver. He is the tallest diver on the team, and most divers are under 6 feet tall. Despite his size, Cohen has never let that hinder his success through nine years of diving. “He’s really tall and large, and definitely above the average size,” head diving coach Mike Brown said. “But it’s phenomenal what he can do at his size.” Cohen totaled nine first-place finishes last season and led Hawai‘i to its first Conference USA Invitational championship title. He then went on to the NCAA Zone E Championships, where he led the ’Bows with a score of 608.90 – good for eighth place. Unfortunately for Cohen, it wasn’t good enough to qualify for the NCAA Diving Championships. “He’s been great,” Brown said. “He has won most of the meets this season. At the Texas Invitational, he beat a few really good divers.” Cohen has also added two personal bests this season, in the 1 meter (337.85) and the 3 meter (359.50). Despite his success and the praise from his coaches, Cohen remains humble as an experienced diver. “[A good diver needs to be] very self-motivated,” Cohen said. “You have to be strong, but mostly mentally strong. Diving is a really dangerous sport, and you could get hurt.” In spite of being a four-year All-American at Smoky Hill High School in Colorado, Cohen had mixed feelings about diving after high school. But he came to UH because of the program. “I really liked Coach Brown and Coach [Anita] Rossing [assistant diving coach], and Hawai‘i is known to have a pretty good diving program,” said Cohen. As his senior season comes to an end, Cohen reflected on his best accomplishment and fondest memories. “Winning the conference as a team last season was definitely spe-

Cohen soars for success cial,” Cohen said. “I like getting to know the rest of the team – we’re all good friends. The swimming and diving team has around 50 or 60 athletes, and you can always meet new people in the pool or while we travel.” Cohen’s final goal for this season is to earn a berth in the NCAA National Championships, a feat he has never accomplished. Throughout his last three years at Hawai‘i, Cohen has shown consistent improvement. “He has always been good, but he has made mega leaps this season,” Brown said. “He’s in great shape and slimmed down a lot. He has an honest chance of making the NCAA National Championships this season.”
