Best campus food vendor: Ba-Le BIANCA B YSTROM PINO Design Editor

Nothing can beat the variety of Ba-Le, which offers Vietnamese pho, sandwiches, salads, wraps, rolls, Pad Thai and curries. The sandwiches range from $4.50-$5, with options for meat lovers and vegetarians. If you’re looking for something fancier, try a La Tour sandwich like the eggplant Parmesan served on toasted artisan bread. If you have a sweet tooth, BaLe also sells tapioca desserts, parfaits and cookies. Notably, Ba-L e also has a bar (Mānoa Gardens) where stu-

dents can grab alcoholic beverages. There are plenty of chairs and tables, but during 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., it may be hard to find seating inside.

Ba-Le sells tuna rolls containing tuna, rice noodles, carrots, cucumbers and lettuce.

VERONICA F REEMAN Contributing Writer

Whether you’re at Ala Moana, Ward Center or just around town, Panda Express is a quick stop for Chinese cuisine. Honolulu alone has 10 restaurants spread throughout the city. Panda Express’ fast service, savory cuisine and reasonable prices have made it popular. Panda Express offers fewer choices in comparison to other fast food companies, but the entrées and sides it does offer are exceptional for their prices. Fried rice, noodles, shrimp, beef and chicken as well as spring rolls,

pot stickers, rangoons and other popular items fill the menu. Most loved is the orange chicken. According to the website, the dish was “inspired by the Hunan Province in South Central China.” Each menu item was taken from different parts of China, made available in the same place and then Americanized in some way. Some items aren’t even from China but are actually inspired by nearby countries: For example, the less popular but still delicious sweet fire chicken breast

comes from Thailand. U H Mānoa st udents come f rom di f ferent places and backgrounds, but Panda Express is st ill their favor ite place to t aste diversit y.

Best musubi: 7-Eleven K IM MOON JEE Contributing Writer What do you eat when you are hungry but don’t have a lot of money? A musubi is the best choice in that situation, as it is filling, cheap and portable. This popular food item can be found in most convenience stores. The most common type of musubi is Spam musubi, composed of sliced Spam wrapped with a block of rice in nori. Spam musubi has been enjoyed by peo-

ple in Hawai‘i since World War II, when Spam was introduced by American soldiers who had it as part of their rations. It is a Japanese-American fusion food. During World War II, the Japanese used Spam to supplement other ingredients when they made sushi, which is why the musubi looks similar to sushi. Although musubi is common in Hawai‘i, there are many different options besides basic Spam musubi, such as musubi with Spam and egg, Spam katsu, teri-

yaki Spam, teriyaki hot dog and much more. These different kinds of musubis are available at 7-Eleven, which is open 24 hours. Warmed up and affordable with prices ranging from $1.29 -$1.79, 7-Eleven musubis fill you up without emptying your wallet.

Best pizza: Papa John’s K ELLY SLOAN Staff Writer

The popular slogan, “Better Ingredients. Better Pizza. Papa John’s,” has attracted the attention of pizza lovers everywhere, especially at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa with its filling, affordable, fast-delivered and delicious pizza. Papa John’s opened in 1984 with founder John Schnatter and is now the third largest take-out and delivery pizza restaurant chain in the United States behind Pizza Hut and Domino’s Pizza. It advertises fresh ingredients such as

mozzarella cheese, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms and homemade tomato sauce. The crust is made with filtered water, soybean oil and high protein flour so it is light and crunchy. For the sausage and pepperoni, it uses 100 percent beef and pork. The garlic-butter dipping sauce is also a must-have. Papa John’s offers deals and coupons that college students on a budget can use. After a quick price comparison with Pizza Hut and Domino’s Pizza, the prices and deals are about the same, so it must be the taste and quality that has UH students leaning toward Papa

John’s. With special offers like any large pizza for $15 or a medium pizza and two-liter beverage for the same price, college students with limited budgets who want delicious food flock to Papa John’s.

Papa John’s Address: 1646 Kapi‘olani Blvd. Phone: 808-592-7272 Hours: Carry-out hours: Mon-Sun 10 a.m.-9:40 p.m. Delivery hours: Mon-Sun 10 a.m.-12 a.m. Website: papajohns.com

Momo Burger sells both garlic fries and sweet potato fries. PAIGE TAKEYA KA LEO O HAWAI‘I

With burgers made from 100 percent grass-fed beef, locally grown on Kulana Ranch on the Big Island, Momo Burger has become the object of lunchtime cravings. Momo’s website boasts that grass-fed beef is “lower in calories, contains more healthy omega-3 fats, more vitamins A and E, higher levels of antioxidants, and up to seven times the beta-carotene,” making their burgers “[t]he

healthiest you can possibly get if you are going to eat a burger.” Some menu items have an Asian influence, such as the Kim Chee Burger ($7), made with ko chu jang aioli, kim chee slaw, kalbi glaze and toasted sesame, and its Teriyaki Burger ($7), made with teriyaki glaze, negi aioli, caramelized onions and American cheese with both items also available as hot dogs ($4). Momo also offers each of its burgers in “slider” sizes, which are equivalent to about half the size of a regular burger.

Gyros are on the menu as well, such as the Bulgogi Gyro ($6.50), made with Korean beef, spicy tzatziki, lettuce, tomato and red onion. Noticeably, this favored food truck no longer operates on campus, but to find out where you can get Momo, visit its Facebook page or Twitter, @momoburgerhi.

Starbucks’s location, size, gentle lighting, comfortable furniture and relaxing ambience make it an ideal place to study or to socialize. Starbucks has several convenient locations near campus – one in Campus Center, East Mānoa Road, Ala Moana Shopping Center and finally one on Ke‘eaumoku Street near Wal-Mart. Other vendors on campus also serve Starbucks-brewed coffee or cold and bottled coffees inspired by the Frappuccino flavors. Most Starbucks locations are

open from about 6 a.m. for those who need their morning coffee, until 9 or 10 p.m. for people who want to get their late night fix. Starbucks makes coffee any way you like it: hot or cold, stirred or layered, sweetened or unsweetened. Vanilla bean or strawberry and cream frappuccinos, strawberry and banana or orange smoothies and the lime or hibiscus berry refreshers are available as non-coffee options. Matsumoto Shave Ice, based in the North Shore, has been serving carloads of tourists and locals since 1951. The shop was founded by Mamoru Matsumoto, who came to Hawai‘i with his brother in search of jobs that would supplement their struggling family’s income back in Japan. A fter

working on the sugar plantations, Matsumoto met his wife, with whom he would soon open M. Matsumoto Store Inc. in Haleiwa. With the help of their children, the couple was able to transform the store into the popular shave ice shop that we know and love today. Matsumoto’s boasts dozens of different f lavors, and visitors can combine any three for an array of possibilities. The shop

also sells shirts, hats and stickers so visitors have something to remember their visit by.

Best burger: Teddy’s TIM M ETR A Associate Opinions Editor One of the best burger experiences of your life is a 15 -minute walk from campus at Teddy’s Bigger Burgers. Teddy’s has been a fixture of the Hawaiian burger-joint scene since 1998, when it opened its first store near Diamond Head. It has since grown to 11 locations, including one on the mainland in Woodinville, Wash., and even Tokyo, Japan. The store’s founders decided to open up the first Teddy’s when they couldn’t fi nd a burger joint on the island that served something as delicious as their own backyard-barbecue burgers. Inspired by the menus and style of the 1950s,

they came up with Teddy’s Bigger Burgers after a yearlong search for the recipes and suppliers that met their standards. While technically fast food, Teddy’s isn’t as quick to serve as somewhere like McDonald’s or Burger King; it makes all of its food to-order with fresh ingredients. While priding itself on being a burger, fries and shake place, Teddy’s does offer a few other options, including tater tots, sandwiches, salads and a juicy veggie burger. The Beretania location is on the small side, but the space is well laid-out and seating is typically available either indoors or out. The store is currently under renovations to provide restrooms.

Serg’s Mexican Kitchen On Sundays, Serg’s serves dishes like hotcakes and omelettes. CHASEN DAVIS KA LEO O HAWAI‘I

JOSEPH H AN Associate Chief Copy Editor

Since opening in September 2009, Serg’s Mexican Kitchen has continually proclaimed that it serves the best Mexican food on the island. Run by owner Sergio Arellano along with his wife Claudette, Serg’s always tries to live up to that statement. Skip the fast food and make the trip to Mānoa for authentic Mexican cuisine worth more than anything a value menu or meal could offer. From the house specials, try the flautas ($8.95), a 12-inch flour tortilla that is rolled, fried and stuffed with your choice of meat or vegetarian option, or the enchiladas ($8.95) that

Poke is a mixed raw salad typically made of bite-sized pieces of sashimi marinated in a variety of sauces. Chili pepper, inamona, limu, Maui onion, sea salt and soy sauce are frequently used ingredients. LEVI VILORIA KA LEO O HAWAI‘I

are served with fresh cheese, queso fresco and cilantro with the choice of green or red sauce, along with rice and beans. Also try Serg’s Nachos ($6.95), the Ceviche Salad ($9.95) and Mexico City Style Tacos ($2.75). Spicy flavors are sure to attract and draw you back, especially after knowing what the real deal tastes like. With outdoor seating reminiscent of a lively backyard get-together, this is an ideal place to relax and satisfy your cravings with friendly service and a lively atmosphere of enjoying food and drinks (BYOB) with a group of people. Throughout the week, check out Taco Tuesdays with $2 fish tacos and $1.50 for all other tacos from 4 p.m. to closing, Chile Rel-

leno Wednesdays – a fresh poblano pepper stuffed with melted cheese topped with red or green sauce, sour cream, onions and cilantro – and the Sunday breakfast menu. If your stomach permits, try Serg’s signature dessert, Tostada de Platano. There’s something for everyone, fan or not of Mexican cuisine, and Serg’s will definitely make you rethink what you have or haven’t been eating this whole time.

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue ISMAEL MA / KA LEO O HAWAI‘I

CAITLIN KURODA Features Editor L &L Hawaiian Barbecue has been a local staple for decades. There more than 30 L &L locations on O‘ahu alone, but with two convenient locations on opposite sides of campus (the second f loor of the Athletic Complex and in Paradise Palms Café), students don’t have to go far for a tasty plate lunch during the school day. Plate lunch options, from L &L’s chicken katsu and loco moco to breaded pork chops and shrimp curry, go for reasonable prices – approximately $5 -$6 for a mini plate and $7-$9 for regular-size plates. The portion sizes are large and worth the price (a regular chicken katsu plate could last two meals for some).

Aside from the main dish, each plate lunch comes with essentials such as a scoop or two of white rice and macaroni salad. For a healthier meal, L &L gives you the option of substituting these sides with brown rice and tossed salad for a small surcharge.

Best poke: Foodland QUINCY GREENHECK Web Editor Whether you’re new to Hawai‘i, have lived here your whole life or fall somewhere in between, Foodland is the place to go when the seafood craving hits and you find yourself on the hunt for quality poke. With 16 locations spread across O‘ahu, there is probably a store near you. Foodland has established itself as a go-to grocery for poke with its

selection of tako, salmon, ahi, mussels and crab. If you’re new to poke, try the spicy ahi or the ahi shoyu for starters; they are classics for a reason. Another thing to never underestimate when giving the counter a look-over is the variety. Shortneck clam, dried aku, onion mussels, inamona white crab, tripe, garlic soybeans, cucumber kim chee and much more await your decision-making. For those with sensitivity to spicy food, watch out because

some varieties do deliver the spiciness the names suggest. Price per pound depends on selection and season, typically ranging anywhere between $5-25.

Located a short walk from campus, University Stop is where you can find a wide assortment of beers, hard liquors, coolers and wines at affordable prices. The establishment takes cash and card and is open every day. The owners work at the register and are very friendly. There are often sales on packs and boxes of drinks, so stop by to view the prices. Another noteworthy observation is that University Stop sells betel nut that is similar to chewing tobacco and acts as a mild painkiller with a narcotic effect. However, be careful of this habitforming drug because it has been linked to cancer of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus and stomach.

Since opening in 1977, Down to Earth has grown to include four stores on O‘ahu and one on Maui. This health food chain builds a community, helping others live healthier lifestyles by offering free vegetarian cooking classes, hosting free health lectures and making informative articles available on its website. Although it promotes a vegetarian lifestyle with its many meatless alternatives, it also sells a wide selection of organic and natural foods that appeal to non-vegetarians as well. In addition to reasonable prices, Down to Earth aims to serve local products as much as possible, and its free customer rewards program allows shoppers to redeem points on their purchases.

CANDACE C HANG Senior Staff Writer AT&T has the nation’s largest 4G network, a plethora of popular phones and a wide variety of data and voice plans, making it no surprise that UH voted it the best cellphone service. A long with a 4G network that covers 288 million users, AT&T’s plans offer rollover minutes that transfer from month to month, allowing its customers to stockpile extra minutes. They also have an upgrade advantage, meaning that instead of waiting a full two years to get a discount on a new phone when renewing your plan,

you can do it four months earlier. Finally, AT&T’s best selling point is that it is the only ser vice provider that allows iPhone 5 users to talk and surf at the same time. AT&T offers phones from a variety of brands, including Apple, Samsung, Blackberry, HTC and LG. Its top smartphones include the Samsung Galaxy S III, Apple’s iPhone 5, the HTC Vivid and the Blackberry Bold. Prices range from one cent to $399.99 when purchasing or renewing a twoyear contract. College students on a budget can opt for a basic voice plan with 450 minutes that costs $39.99 a month, then add on

limited data and messaging plans starting at $20 per month. Other cheap options include the GoPhones, which start at 10 cents per minute or $2 per day, but need separate data plans. But for students who need more, including unlimited minutes and text messaging and up to 5 GB of data, plans can cost as much as $139.99 per month.

The company was able to provide excellent customer service despite the fact that it was an Internetbased company. Students have to balance the demands of daily life while obtaining an education, and this struggle to keep things in balance can affect a person’s health. UH students have accordingly picked CorePower Yoga as the best. CorePower Yoga offers classes catered to those interested in taking care of their body without the spiritual philosophy found at other yoga institutions. Part of the CorePower curriculum highlights “hot” yoga, which is practiced in a heated room, similar to the popular Bikram style. For the exercise enthusiast, the CorePower Ryder series offers cycling classes that emphasize increased range of movement.

It should be no surprise that one of the most expensive hotels in Hawai‘i also holds the top-rated spa. The Halekulani Hotel hosts SpaHalekulani on its beachfront property in the lobby. The hotel itself was purchased in 1917 and named Halekulani, which means “house befitting heaven.” Because the spa is inside the swank Halekulani Hotel, its costs are on the higher end of the scale. It offers a variety of treatments including massage, salon services, nails and more. A 30-minute massage will cost $140. Clients can get a manicure and a pedicure for $110. And if you and your significant other are not on a budget, the “Romance Remembered” package will cost you $1,300.

SAR AH NISHIOK A Opinions Editor Shopping at a thrift store is a good way to save money and the environment, but shopping at Goodwill helps to save lives. It was originally founded in 1902 as a religious charity, but Goodwill now recycles and sells donated items. There are seven Goodwill stores on O‘ahu, including a Surplus Store that offers even lower prices. College students with valid school IDs can receive a 20 percent discount on Sundays, while any person with a military ID gets a 20 percent discount on Wednesdays.
