Mostly A’s, then you are a party animal!

Do most of your friends come to you for advice on the best dance venues? Are you spending your weekend nights sweating to the beat of the bass? If so, head to Ginza on 1230 Kona Street. The DJ spins until 4 a.m. and will keep you entertained with tons of hip-hop, house and EDM.

Mostly B’s, then you are a trend seeker!

If you find yourself looking for the hottest places to party and hate being tied down by one venue, then look no further than The M, located on 500 Ala Moana Boulevard. With plenty of lounge space and a full bar, you can associate with the hottest of Hawaii while sipping on the finest liquor.

Mostly C’s, then you are a swank partier! If your going-out priorities revolve around atmosphere, classy outfits and expensive taste, then Rum Fire in Waikiki is where you need to find yourself on the weekends. Located on 2255 Kalakaua Avenue inside the Sheraton Hotel, Rum Fire offers fine dining, live music and a great ocean view. Bring a full wallet and dress to impress!

Mostly D’s, then you are a rough rider! Do you enjoy clinking mugs with your best buds and singing at the top of your lungs to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”? If so, then JJ Dolan’s in Chinatown on 1147 Bethel Street may be your best bet. Although the pub is small, the drinks are cheap and the people are friendly. Make sure to reserve a table, or come early to try their delicious pizza.

Blackout (n.) If you remember absolutely nothing from the night before, chances are you blacked out. Breaking the seal (v.) The first time one pees following alcohol consumption. Once the seal is broken, bathroom trips become frequent. Crossed (adj.) Drinking while “faded,” leads to being crossed/cross-faded. PHOTOS BY: NOEL HAHN

You don’t need to be of legal age to party. For those under 21, there are still plenty of nightlife options. Start your weekend with fireworks in Waikiki at the Barefoot Beach Café, where they have live music every Friday night from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It’s a low-key way to relax before starting your night. For those looking to step out of your comfort zone, The Mambo Room at the Honolulu Club offers salsa and bachata dancing every Friday night from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. The entry fee is $7, but there is a free intro class. Dancers of all ages are welcome to improve their skills or learn something new. Sunset on the Beach is another cool event offered to younger age groups. Similar to a drive-in movie, Sunset on the Beach is a walk-in movie shown on a 30-foot screen near the end of Waikiki Beach on the weekends. If you’re out with older friends and can’t gain entrance to certain clubs, Dave & Busters in Ward Center is the place to go. With a restaurant downstairs and an arcade upstairs, it’s a great mix of dining and entertainment. They also do specialty nights where those 18 and older can gain admission. Chinatown is also a great venue for spur-of-the-moment gigs and comedy shows. Just be sure to keep your eye out, as they may not be advertised widely.

Scan these QR Codes to visit their websites!

Faded (adj.) The feeling one gets after smoking…herbs. Hyphy (v.) Go stupid. Get dumb. See “turn up.” Party foul (n.) This is usually said to people that commit crimes such as spilling their drink, throwing up, breaking something or even forgetting where the bathroom is. Don’t be THAT person. Shot gun (n.) The act wherein one cuts a small hole into a beer can and pulls the tab while simultaneously drinking from aforementioned hole as fast as possible. Sloshed/Wasted/Obliterated (adj.) General terms to use in place of “I’m drunk.” Turn up (v.) Party, like crazy.

GET FULL

AT MAI TAI BAR PAIGE TAKEYA ALOHA NIGHTS COORDINATOR

Partying requires fuel – and frankly, it’s difficult to coast through on shots all night. So you need to eat before you go, and luckily, Mai Tai Bar in Ala Moana Shopping Center is ready to serve. Here are our three recommendations for your culinary delight.

1. POPCORN SHRIMP Finger food is a necessity for drinking. These popcorn shrimp are big, crunchy and delicious – but more importantly, they’re only $5.50 during happy hour.

1

2

3

PHOTOS BY: LEILANI PORTILLO

2. STEAK PUPU If you’re going to get the shrimp, you might as well go full surf and turf. Mai Tai Bar’s steak pupu is a meal in itself. The soy cilantro garlic sauce transcends the meat to the next level. Try it for $11.50.

3. AHI TACOS Using wonton shells and sesame dressing instead of Mexican ingredients, they’re an Asian spin on a classic. The fresh ahi is refreshing.

So now that you’re full, you can head out – or you can stay where you are. Mai Tai Bar has live music, DJs spinning and a huge bar (you saw it on our cover), so why leave? Happy Hour runs from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. (that’s when food is on special), but drinks stay cheap from 8 p.m.-11 p.m.

Mai Tai Bar • 1450 Ala Moana Blvd. • 808-947-2900 • maitaibar.com

Looking for someplace close to campus where you can enjoy a good drink and live music? Located within walking distance is Anna O’Briens, a local Irish bar operated by E & J Lounge. The pub doubles as a bar and music venue, hosting a multitude of different artists and genres. With regular appearances by Black Square, Ooklah The Moc, Mike Love and True Sounds of Liberty, Anna O’Briens spotlights live music that appeals to a wide range of musical tastes, usually with free admission or a $5 cover. Anna O’Briens also offers a monthly rotation of drink specials. They have deals on Irish beers like Guinness Draught or Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale, and have a “Whiskey of the Month” special, including Bushmills or Bushmills Irish Honey. So whether you seek a strong drink to relieve the stress of school or a night of good music to enjoy with your friends, Anna O’Briens fits the bill. Whenever you’re wondering where you should go to for a quick pint, think of Anna’s, and have some of the best Irish beer you can get in the area.

Less is definitely more. A dress shirt with a pair of darkwash jeans or slacks is perfect. Always tuck your shirt in, as it will make you look more put together. Dress shoes are nice, but you can wear sneakers – just be sure they’re clean. Shave before you go out, and wear cologne, but put it on in moderation. Don’t drench yourself, or else you’ll repel the people next to you. Details are always nice; a tie clip in a fancier club shows sophistication.

The go-to outfit for women is the LBD (little black dress), a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down. If the club is low key, pair it with a jacket, necklace and wedge heels. If the club calls for dressier wear, you go with a statement necklace for a little pizazz. The most important part is going to be your shoes. If you can wear five-inch stilettos for hours, go for it. For those who can’t, grab high-heeled boots. If you’re not a dress girl, try dark-wash skinnies and an embroidered or sequined tank.

WOMEN Skinny jeans are a great base to build from, as you can easily add a sequined top, graphic tee or flannel. House parties are generally more relaxed, so a pair of cute flats, oxfords or boots will keep you looking stylish without hurting your feet. If jeans aren’t really you, a pair of tights with a skirt will look great. You can also try high-waist shorts with a dressier top to stay comfortable and cute all night.

MEN Men should still wear jeans, but replace the dress shirt with a nice flannel or thermal. Band tees are also great because they show off your personal interests. If you want to wear a hat, go for it. Clean sneakers are a good option as well. If you are into necklaces or chains, wear them in moderation. It’s a house party, not a fashion show.
