Iconic Examples of American Architecture Although American architecture is often thought to have had its roots in the late 18th century, many architectural styles that define America today can be traced back centuries before 1776. American architecture is responsible for an impressive collection of buildings that have come to define the American landscape.

Empire State Building, New York – William F. Lamb The Empire State Building was the work of architects Lamb, Shreve and Harmon, and it was the tallest building in the world when it opened in 1931 – a record that it held until 1972. William F. Lamb’s Art Deco tower still stands as an American icon.

Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles – Frank Gehry Walter Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles uses a mix of materials and a stainless steel skin to achieve its curving shape. The interior takes on an entirely different appearance, with oak and Douglas fir designed to scientifically derived acoustic standards.
