Notice: 2015-2016 BCMS Physician Directory form Attention physicians and practice managers: Keep an eye out for a purple form arriving in your mailboxes in June that invites each BCMS member physician to renew your current pictorial listing or create a new listing for the 20152016 BCMS Physician Directory.

We use this information to update your online directory listing as well. This is THE premier medical resource book for Boulder County, and we sell very limited advertising so that our physicians are featured. Don’t miss your opportunity to be listed!

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES Have an interest in helping shape the future of medicine in our county and state? The Boulder County Medical Society has a few openings for the following leadership positions. Become involved and keep BCMS a dynamic, inclusive organization. BCMS REPRESENTATIVE TO CMS’ COUNSEL ON LEGISLATION The CMS Council on Legislation (COL) reviews and discusses health care related bills that have been presented to the Colorado General Assembly. Currently 40 bills have been brought forth this session and reviewed to ensure legislation benefits physicians professionally and helps improve the health and wellness of Colorado patients. With staff support, the COL reviews each bill to understand its intent, its possible outcomes and the political landscape to collectively determine how and at what level CMS should engage.

The last meeting of the 2014 session will be June 25th. All meetings are held on Wednesdays from 6-8 pm at the CMS office in Denver. Conference call-in is available. BCMS REPRESENTATIVE TO COMMITTEE ON PHYSICIAN PRACTICE EVOLUTION The Committee on Physician Practice Evolution (CPPE) studies issues related to the evolving health care system and how such changes affect the ability of physicians to deliver accessible, high quality, cost-effective patient care in an economically sustainable manner. CMS needs specialists in particular to round out representation on the committee. BCMS ALTERNATE DELEGATE The CMS Annual Meeting each September features fun, fellowship, interactive programming, education,

policymaking and the election of officers. The date for this year’s CMS Annual Meeting is Sept. 19th-21st in Vail. It is very important that BCMS sends a full delegation to the meeting every year, and last year we did just that with all 27 seats filled with BCMS Delegates and Alternate Delegates. Resolutions submitted by component societies and individuals, if approved, become policy of the CMS. Duties for Alternate Delegates are quite simple: Attend the CMS Annual Meeting and become informed of resolutions and progress reports of CMS by attending the BCMS Caucus dinner here at BCMS in late August. BCMS Delegates have first choice of attending the CMS Annual meeting. If they are unable to attend, we then call on the Alternate Delegates to fill remaining openings. BCMS pays a small stipend toward travel expenses (covering hotel and mileage up to $500 per person).

Upcoming BCMS and CMS events May 6th – “Organized Medicine: What it can do for you at this stage of the game” and “Meet and Greet”

Join the Boulder County Medical Society on Tuesday, May 6th, 6-7:30 p.m. for a Meet and Greet with your colleagues and to learn more about the American Medical Association. Appetizers and wine/beer will be served. The Meet and Greet offers you an opportunity to socialize with your colleagues and form new connections. The purpose is to allow you to expand your referral network among other attendees and to exchange, encourage recreational/social/cultural interests to help build the concept of community. AMA Delegate Lynn Parry, MD, and Alternate Delegate Jan Kief, MD, have been invited to speak at our meeting as AMA Ambassadors. Through the AMA Ambassador Program, members of the Colorado delegation to the AMA House of Delegates present information on the national association’s strategic focus areas, major advocacy and program initiatives, and our successful collaborations. You’ll learn more about the AMA and can ask our delegation leaders questions about this strategic partnership. Location: Nissi’s 2675 Northpark Dr Lafayette, CO 80026 Cost: There is no charge for BCMS member physicians; non-members are welcome to attend for a small fee of $15 RSVP to Judy at (303) 527-3215 or BCMedSoc@aol.com

May 16th-18th – 2014 CMS Spring Conference “Narrative as Persuasion: The Proven Effectiveness of Storytelling” Register today for the 2014 Colorado Medical Society Spring Conference, Friday, May 16th - Sunday, May 18th, at the Sonnenalp Hotel in Vail. Online registration is now open; go to www.cms.org/events/spring-conference for more information. Registration is free for CMS member physicians and component society staff. Non-CMS member physicians can register for a fee of $125. The deadline for hotel reservations has been extended to May 9.

With this year’s theme, “Narrative as Persuasion: The Proven Effectiveness of Storytelling,” CMS has invited top state and national experts to address critical issues facing medicine in Colorado. Participants will also learn how to apply tangible storytelling skills and acumen from a professional communications consultant in order to more effectively express medicine’s message on these and other issues. The conference kicks off Friday night at 6 p.m. with a social in the Kings Club with heavy appetizers, live music, cocktails, dessert and a silent auction benefitting COMPAC.

June 10th – “Physician Burnout Soiree 2014” Save the date for the Physician Burnout Soiree 2014, Tuesday, June 10th, 6-7:30 p.m. at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. BCMS members have expressed high-level anxiety about many aspects of modern medicine: The pressures of working “in the trenches” with burnout levels reaching a near breaking point; health care reform, economic uncertainty and increasing demand for quality care improvement while employers look for efficiencies at work; and patients having high expectations for your time and care. We hope to identify skills that physicians could use to better manage emotional exhaustion, and improve self-care and resilience. Cocktails and heavy appetizers will be served. Speakers will give a presentation on physician burnout, offering a solutions-oriented approach with Q&A to follow.

Alert: Heartbleed bug The “Heartbleed” bug gives hackers a way past the security on roughly two-thirds of the websites on the Internet. While BCMS.net wasn’t affected, we recommend members take precaution. Go to http:// tinyurl.com/ok3wurk to view the major websites affected. Change your online passwords with these sites, prioritizing the most sensitive. And while major bank sites weren’t affected, if you used the same password for other accounts as you do for banking accounts, you are encouraged to change those passwords as well.

CMS to feature John Ogle, MD, MPH, as “Physician Hero” BCMS past president John Ogle, MD, MPH, will be featured in the May/June issue of Colorado Medicine as part of the “Physician Heroes” series. The Colorado Medical Society launched this series to combat physician burnout. Ogle is an emergency physician in Longmont and a colonel in the United States Air Force. Over his 33 years in the military he has devised his own “antiburnout” strategy; he has deployed on humanitarian and combat missions to seven continents with military and civilian relief organizations. He travels voluntarily, going where he feels he can make a difference. “I’m drawn to unique places where I’m going to be doing something interesting and meaningful with the skill set I have. Like many ER docs, I have a touch of ADHD, which craves variety.” Look for his profile in the May/June issue of Colorado Medicine and on www.cms.org.

Jack Imig, MD, gave presentation at women’s health forum

Jack Imig, MD, gave a women’s health forum presentation on April 12, 2014 titled, “What Every Woman Should Know…Know the Facts About Gynecologic Cancer.” Leon Que, MD, and his wife Heidi were part of organizing committee, and invited BCMS to be a co-sponsor of this event.

Cliff Gronseth, MD, gave presentation on “Your Amazing Body” BCMS President Cliff Gronseth, MD, gave a presentation on “Your Amazing Body, Community Mini-Medical School Lecture Series” on April 17, 2014. He is shown here holding a whale spine that was used as one of the demos for his lecture.

ICD-10 UPDATE Don’t let the delay stop your momentum The bill that stopped a scheduled 24 percent Medicare pay cut to physicians also delayed the transition to the ICD-10 code set for at least an additional year. Congress passed and President Obama signed H.R. 4302 into law on April 1. The current delay measure states, “The Secretary of Health and Human Service may not, prior to Oct. 1, 2015, adopt ICD-10 code sets as the standard for codes sets.” The Colorado ICD-10 Training Coalition recognizes that physicians, payers, vendors and academic programs have already invested great resources in planning your transition, and that many may be frustrated by another delay. The coalition encourages practices not to lose momentum. Those ready for implementation can access archived webinars on their website, www.cms.org/icd10, to refresh and improve your skills, and those who need another year can increase your readiness through proactive education, practice and testing. Use this postponement to increase your knowledge, review and adjust documentation quality and clinician education, and adjust coding and billing procedures without the weight of the 2014 deadline. The coalition will continue to hold webinars and post resources on their website and provide more information on the delay as it is available.
