WELCOME TO
Kalispell
T
AKE A DEEP BREATH, open your eyes and look around. You have arrived at the center of it all. In the midst of acres upon acres of earth waiting to be conquered, the middle of thousands of memories waiting to be made, and the hub of a wild and wonderful Montana adventure. Gaze to the northwest and you will be staring into Glacier National Park, an American jewel brimming with breathtaking views and endless backcountry opportunities, all draped in a rich history of preservation. Turn your eyes south and catch the impossibly clear waters of the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi and see the tranquility contained within. Let your eyes admire the majestic wildlife, the singing birds, the bright flowers, the cowboys on horseback, the farmers in the field, the artists in front of their canvas, the explorers finding themselves and the wanderers finding their way home. But then stop for a moment. And look at what’s right in front of you. See what’s available in downtown Kalispell and map your adventure. Sip a local microbrew crafted right here on Main Street. Grab a sushi roll made fresh for you. Be awed by a painting inspired by this land. Gear up for a fishing trip and get an insider tip from a friendly local. Take another breath, feel the fresh air in your lungs, hear the buzz of nature and the bustle of downtown, and smile. You’re here in Kalispell, far from your everyday and right in the middle of it all.

GETTING TO KNOW US Here in the heart of the Flathead Valley, life is awe-inspiring and simple at the same time. And that ability to both lose ourselves – to wander in millions of acres of protected and pristine lands - or find ourselves by channeling the confident frontier spirit that drove the development of this regional powerhouse, is what makes this mountain community a place you’ll want to visit, and perhaps live.
A few of Kalispell’s passionate ambassadors share their personal stories. ASHLEY WOODWORTH BANKER What I like the most about living in Kalispell is the people and the great sense of community here. I like to hike Lone Pine. Located just outside of Kalispell it has beautiful views and is easily accessible. DANNI COFFMAN ATTORNEY I am incredibly proud of our community, which came together to raise the money needed to secure trail access from Herron Park to Blacktail Mountain. Visitors come for the world class recreational opportunities in our back yard, but for a quick run, hike or ride, there are miles and miles of scenic and well-maintained trails right in Kalispell’s front yard at Herron Park. DILLON TABISH OUTDOORSMAN Living in Montana means adventuring in the outdoors, and I’ve always enjoyed exploring this great state’s wild places. The Thompson Chain of Lakes is a premier public park in so many ways. It has everything you could want in a rustic escape: amazing fishing, forested campsites, and a collection of clean lakes that grip your senses and remind you how lucky we are in Montana.
TESSA HECK ARTIST The Kalispell community is inviting and there are ample opportunities to be involved to make your mark! I enjoy getting to be part of the arts community and recently had the privilege to complete a mural in downtown at Kalispell Brewing. HALLADAY QUIST MUSICIAN I live in Kalispell because I’ve traveled the world and haven’t found a place on Earth that has what we have; gorgeous sky scraping mountains, fresh clear water to dive into, and amazing authentic hard working people that form such an incredible community of support and encouragement. When I’m not driving my bus around the state looking for new beautiful skyline vistas, I’m cruising around downtown listening to the plethora of musical talent that we have in this area. Our music community is INCREDIBLE! www.discoverkalispell.com | 888-888-2308

Mountain CULTURE
Montana is the perfect place to stretch out, but even an eagle likes a good nest when it’s not spreading its wings. Kalispell’s right in the middle of everything — hiking, biking, mountain climbing, skiing, fishing, boating and more — and is waiting for you, with open arms. Northwest Montana’s largest city, Kalispell is where the locals live. And play. And eat. And drink. And love calling home. MONTANA LIVING Kalispell is the hub for your next outdoor adventure. Some of the best times are spent under blue skies, no matter what flavor of outdoor exploration you prefer. In the summer, hiking in Glacier National Park usually tops most ‘must-do’ lists, but there are many outdoor adventures 8
www.discoverkalispell.com | 888-888-2308
available in Kalispell’s backyard, including a quick day-hike at Lone Pine State Park or the nearby Jewel Basin. The trails are not just filled with foot-traffic, either. Road bikers can venture the 20-plus miles on Kalispell’s Rails to Trails system, and mountain bikers can hit the dirt at Herron Park, five minutes west of downtown. And if the sun gets a little too warm, jump into one of the bountiful rivers and lakes,
including the spectacular Flathead Lake. Rent a kayak or standup paddleboard and catch a beautiful sunset during one of Montana’s long summer evenings. The winter months are snowy, but a few snowflakes never stopped a hearty Montanan. Those same summer trails become a haven for snow-shoers and cross-country skiers. If you come unequipped, there are
MOUNTAIN CULTURE
plenty of locally-owned rental shops that can set you up with either. Want to try fat tire biking? These wide tire bikes made for snow travel can be rented in historic downtown Kalispell at the 100-year-old Wheaton’s Cycle. If adrenaline is more your thing, skiers and snowboarders can play all day at Whitefish Mountain Resort and Blacktail Mountain Ski Area (Lakeside), which are located in nearby towns, before heading back to Kalispell for a nightcap and a good night’s rest.
FRESH AND HEALTHY
In order to climb mountains, swim lakes, and bike across the land, you’re going to need some food to fuel the tank. Thankfully Kalispell has a variety of delicious options that pleases any palate. Main Street is lined with restaurants that feature everything from mouth-watering burgers, fresh sushi, to authentic Thai cuisine. If you’re looking to wet your whistle, enjoy a local microbrew or libation. Downtown is home to three breweries and a distillery. If there’s one thread that runs through them all, it’s local. The chefs are local, the owners are local, and the ingredients are local. The farms and ranches in Kalispell and beyond provide free-range meats and organic produce, some of which you can find at farmers markets and natural grocers in town.
FIND YOUR BALANCE What sets Kalispell apart is the way two worlds come together. This is a town dripping with history, but not stuck in the past. You don’t need to look any further than right down Main Street to see that reality. Without sacrificing that old Western charm, Main Street has been revitalized in recent years with new shops and restaurants injecting a modern feel into the classic Western architecture. That’s not to say, though, that all of history is gone from downtown. Take a step back in time and enjoy a classic soda fountain (Norm’s News), a peanut-shell-littered saloon serving tasty pizzas (Moose’s) and an ornate place to lay your head (Kalispell Grand Hotel). History and modern life collide at Kalispell Brewing Co., right in the middle of Main Street, a locally owned craft brewer operating out of a historic old building, and one of three breweries in town. www.discoverkalispell.com | 888-888-2308

BIKE ALONG HUNGRY HORSE RESERVOIR Hungry Horse Dam and Reservoir are located 20 miles northeast of Kalispell. At 564 feet high, the dam is one of the largest concrete arch dams in the U.S. and its morning-glory spillway is the highest in the world. The reservoir is 34 miles long and surrounded by towering mountain peaks. A recommended bike excursion is a ride along the west side of the reservoir which is paved for the first 11 miles. Stop for a break at the Lost Johnny Point Campground approximately 6 miles from the dam - allow time for a hike, fish or swim. The Hungry Horse Dam Visitor Center is open daily May – September and offers free guided tours of the dam.
LOOP FLATHEAD LAKE A drive around Flathead Lake offers breathtaking views, tasty local fare, and colorful culture. It’s recommended to start on the west side for reasons that become vividly apparent around sunset. Memorable stops include great restaurants, museums, galleries, breweries, a distillery and winery, and several state parks for swimming and rock skipping. The southern half of the lake is part of the Flathead Indian Reservation, home to the Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Summer events include the Standing Arrow Powwow in Elmo. In early May the cherry orchards that rim the lake are in full bloom. July-August is harvest time when numerous roadside stands are open to feast on ripe cherries. After Polson
at the south end of the lake, head north towards Bigfork on the eastside highway. With higher peaks and steeper shoreline, the east side offers a dramatic experience as you roll past orchards, agricultural land, and views of sailboats gliding across the lake. Grab dinner and take in the sunset before the short drive back to Kalispell. GOING TO THE SUN IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK A lifetime dream for many motorcyclists is a cruise on Glacier’s Going to the Sun Road. The 50 mile engineering marvel winds over the Continental Divide and has some of the twistiest turns and steepest elevation changes of any paved road in the U.S. You’ll see jagged peaks, mountain lakes, sweeping valley views, waterfalls, wildflower meadows, and possibly mountain goats and other alpine wildlife. The road is narrow and sometimes slow-going, but it’s well-maintained and has plenty of places to pull over and take in the views. Perched on the Continental Divide at 6,640 feet, Logan Pass Visitor Center is a good place to stretch your legs. Dress for weather variations as temperatures can be cold at the top. Services are limited between West Glacier and St. Mary so pack refreshments and check road conditions on the Glacier Park website before setting out.

In the Flathead Valley, where the majority of Montana’s protected rivers run, we have a number of ways to enjoy the water and the region it supports.
FL ATHEAD L AKE
THE LONGEST OF GLACIER NATIONAL PARK’S 536 streams starts at the confluence of two delicate creeks draining off the Continental Divide. McDonald Creek winds down 25.8 miles, gaining steam as it picks up runoff from massive glacially-carved mountains like Longfellow and Heavens Peaks, before emptying into the 10-mile-long Lake McDonald. In turn, these waters drain south into the Middle Fork Flathead River, a powerful and fast-moving river that originates in the heart of the Bob Marshall Wilderness. At the southwestern corner of the park, the Middle Fork meets the North Fork, and then, 10 river miles downstream, the South Fork. The mighty main stem of the Flathead charges toward Flathead Lake. The lake is one of the clearest and cleanest bodies of crystalline water in the West due to several influences including a relatively low human population in the watershed, and the rapid flushing of the lake – about 2.2 years for all the water to be replaced.
HIKE THE NORTH FORK
FISH THE SOUTH FORK
FLOAT THE MIDDLE FORK
EXPLORE THE LAKE
Visit one of the active fire lookouts in the Flathead National Forest. The 2.8 mile hike to Cyclone Lookout offers gentle switchbacks passing through a lodgepole forest. At the top you’ll have views of the North Fork Valley into Glacier National Park. Time it right and you can load up on wild huckleberries along the way. Stop by the Polebridge Mercantile after for a homemade treat and a cold drink.
Four different raft companies run the Middle Fork, which is the most accessible segment of the Flathead River. Visit early in the season for thrilling whitewater, or come during the dog days of summer for a leisurely pleasure cruise. Glacier Raft Company, Glacier Guides and Montana Raft, Great Northern Resort, and Wild River Adventures offer all sorts of trips from half-day floats and dinner trips to multiday backcountry excursions.
INFO FACTS THE FLATHEAD LAKE BIOLOGICAL STATION serves as the sentinel of the lake, having collected samples and data on Flathead Lake ecology and water quality for over 100 years. https://flbs.umt.edu
Cutthroat trout and bull trout love the clear waters of the South Fork Flathead, which flows through 60 miles of designated Wilderness, the highest level of protection for rugged, federal land. Anglers who venture far from the road—particularly those who enlist Swan Mountain Outfitters for pack support and their well-earned knowledge of the deepest, slowest-moving trout pools—will find the solitude worth every ounce of effort.
Flathead Lake is a remnant of Glacial Lake Missoula, which covered much of western Montana until roughly 15,000 years ago. With over 200 square miles of water and 185 miles of shoreline, Flathead Lake has a stunning presence that is connected to the pristine identity of Montana. Pick one of the six State Parks or wildlife refuges along the shoreline for swimming, boating, picnicking and exploring. Rent a kayak, paddleboard, or boat from numerous rental companies. See the lake via a boat tour: sailing charters through Flathead Lake Lodge, a cruise on the Far West or a charter to Wild Horse Island.
THE WILD & SCENIC RIVER ACT, which protects large segments of the three forks of the Flathead River. Inked 50 years ago by Congress in 1968, the act preserved certain rivers with outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values for the enjoyment of present and future generations. FLATHEAD LAKE With more than 500 lakes in this corner of the state, none are more prominent than Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake in the West. It’s also considered one of the cleanest lakes in the world. Five state parks dot Flathead Lake’s shoreline: Big Arm, West Shore, Wayfarers, Finley Point, and Yellow Bay as well as Wild Horse Island, a day-use site that spans 2,000 acres. The parks feature different amenities, such as campsites, restrooms and picnic areas that create an ideal atmosphere for spending the day basking in the sun and cooling off with a dip in the water. Whether it’s by kayak, sailboat or motorboat tour, the lake has scenic opportunities for everyone.
There’s something for just about everyone in Kalispell, but sometimes the choices can be overwhelming. That’s where we can help! Here are some local’s favorites for your next adventure.
HUCKLEBERRY HUNTING No fruit is more prized in Montana than the wild huckleberry. From mid-July to September, huckleberry hunters flock to their favorite mountainside berry patches in search of the delicious purple gems. Seasoned huckleberry pickers may be reluctant to share their secret patches, but the berries can often be found along popular hiking trails. Good places to look are the Danny On Trail at Whitefish Mountain Resort, the Jewel Basin hiking area and trails around the Hungry Horse Reservoir. Even one cup of the flavorful berries will create a memorable a batch of muffins or pancakes. Bears like berries too, so stay alert and make plenty of noise to reduce chances of surprising any nearby bears. If you’d like to sample the berries but would rather let someone else do the picking, you’ll find tasty huckleberry creations at local restaurants, bakeries, breweries, and distilleries ranging from pastries and ice cream to barbecue sauce and beer. PEDAL POWER If you enjoy hurtling down a narrow dirt track there are several award-winning mountain bike and road bike trails in the
Flathead Valley. Foys to Blacktail Trails is a well-signed network of single-track covering 440 acres situated along a forested drainage just a few minutes southwest of Kalispell. You’ll be rewarded with beautiful views, a veritable carpet of wildflowers and plenty of challenges. If road biking is your preference, there are several great rides to choose from. The nonprofit Rails to Trails has paved more than 20 miles of the Great Northern Rail Trail around Kalispell, from the north shore of Flathead Lake west to Kila, bordering the Smith Lake Waterfowl Production Area. These trails offer relatively flat rides that are great for all levels of biking experience. FLOAT THE RIVER Whether your mode of transportation is a kayak, canoe, SUP, or inner-tube, spending the day on a river is a great way to relax, soak up the sun, and cool off in crystal clear Montana waters. Favorite local spots: Whitefish River – put in at Whitefish City Beach, take out at the south side of Hwy 93. Swan River – put in at the access on Rainbow Drive in Bigfork, take out on Hwy 83 at Landmark Lane. Middle Fork Flathead River – put in at West Glacier river

SKATE AND GLIDE The cure for cabin fever is getting out of the cabin. Around here that means schussing the best-groomed cross-country ski trails in the state. Cross-country skiers can choose from miles of groomed trails around the Flathead Valley. Northwest of downtown Kalispell, Round Meadows offers 12 miles of easy to advanced terrain. Glacier Nordic Club’s trails on Big Mountain and at the Whitefish Golf Course accommodate skiers of all ages and abilities. North Shore Nordic Club’s trails in Bigfork on Jewel Basin Road or Blacktail Mountain have a combined total of over 30 kilometers of groomed trails for glide or skate skiing. Meadow Lake Golf Course in Columbia Falls recently added a network of Nordic trails as well. Local outdoor shops offer rentals. RODEO Cowboy culture is part of Montana’s history and in northwest Montana the rodeo circuit is active year-round. Pick your seat on the bleachers, grab a beer and a bag of popcorn and watch the action. Kalispell’s Majestic Valley Arena, the state’s largest indoor arena, has a winter rodeo series that includes bull riding, bucking horse events, barrel racing, bareback riding and more. In the warm season several local outdoor arenas provide a scenic backdrop to this long-standing tradition enabling spectators to revel at the athleticism and passion of the cowboys, cowgirls and rodeo stock in every event.
miles long and is popular among anglers casting for yellow perch, largemouth bass and northern pike. This little-known but scenic site has a boat ramp, parking area, vault latrine and, best of all, four campsites. The camp sites are first-come, firstserve, but the lucky few who pitch their tents can enjoy the overnight solitude. For more info on this and other state parks and fishing access sites visit fwp.mt.gov.
SKI Magazine’s 2019 top-rated resort for overall satisfaction and Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, a true locals’ favorite. Known for abundant powder, both resorts typically enjoy some of the best snowfall in the Pacific Northwest with roughly 300 inches annually. The surrounding mountains are also popular backcountry skiing locations, as well as playgrounds for snowmobilers.
YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE Glacier or throughout the Flathead Valley. Closer to Kalispell, the trails at Lone Pine State Park trails provide a scenic panorama of the entire valley. Rentals are available at the Lone Pine visitor center. DOGS WELCOME Dogs love exploring the outdoors so a Montana vacation can be the right time to bring your best friend. Swimming in a mountain lake, hiking the trails, floating the river, having your fur baby along adds to the memories. Several trails in town and in the wilderness allow dogs (most on leash) such as Montana State Parks and the Flathead National Forest. Offleash dog parks in Kalispell and Whitefish enable Fido to get all the energy out and meet new friends. At the end of the day you can both lay your head at several hotels and motels that cater to pets.

PRESERVING THE HUNT Early settlers noticed a unique feature in the Flathead Valley besides the stunning scenery – an abundance of wildlife. Elk, deer, moose – this corner of the state was a cradle for big game; a sportsman’s mecca. The age-old tradition remains firmly intact and is inextricably tied to Montana’s identity 120 years later. Every fall, the pursuit is renewed as big game
hunting season arrives and thousands of Montanans venture outdoors in search of deer and elk. Rifle season runs from the end of October through the end of November. Montana Fish Wildlife & Park’s Apprentice Hunter Program enables youth to participate in a youth hunt with a rifle or bow. Contact the Kalispell FWP office for information on hunting regulations at 406-752-5501. NORTHERN LIGHTS AND MILKY WAYS Glacier National Park is home to some of the darkest skies in the world. In 2017, Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks became the first trans-boundary International Dark Sky Park. At night, visitors can witness the vast canvas of stars, planets and galaxies with even the most basic astronomical telescopes or the naked eye. In summer the park service hosts viewing programs led by rangers. But a night-sky display is not limited to summer. Pick a clear night and a remote lake or spot by the road and enjoy the show.

COMMUNITY PROFILE
KALISPELL IS A PRETTY CREATIVE COMMUNITY. HOW HAVE YOU, AS A POET, ENJOYED BECOMING PART OF THAT COMMUNITY?
AMY PEARSON
Flathead Valley Community College Poet and professor Amy Pearson moved full-time to Kalispell three years ago, not long after she spent 100 days as a fire lookout in one of the most remote sections of the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The experience inspired a book of poetry, “100 Days of Solitude,” that Pearson has spent the past several years promoting and discussing throughout the region. Pearson now works as a professor at Flathead Valley Community College, but still finds plenty of time to indulge her outdoor passion and even hopes to return to a fire lookout sometime in the not-too-distant future. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO MAKE KALISPELL YOUR HOME? I work here, for one reason, and the other is that I like the size of the city and I like the people here, too. I think there are a lot of people who have deep roots to the Flathead and I like hanging out with them and learn-
ing about them. It feels like Montana but a unique little sector of that. I think a lot of people in Kalispell are pretty settled and I like the variety of ages here, too. There’s a lot of kids but there’s also older folks, and that’s enlivening for me. It’s in the center of the valley so it’s a lot of easy access to other areas, too. HOW DID YOU COME TO WORK AT FLATHEAD VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE? I had heard about the college and especially the poet Lowell Jaeger (Jaeger was named Montana’s poet laureate in 2017). I had heard of him so when I decided I might stay in the Flathead I came over and had a conversation with him and he was excited about having
In Kalispell in particular I would say a lot of that is based out of FVCC and talking to people about what they’re working on. Artistry-wise, there are so many people working on interesting things and meeting each other at certain events and being supportive of each other’s efforts. YOU’VE BEEN BUSY TOURING TO PROMOTE “100 DAYS OF SOLITUDE,” WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? This year I’m kind of trying to take a little bit of a rest, to be honest. I just started my tenure track position and I’m focused on teaching and figuring out the ropes of the college. I’m going to teach an honors class about the psychology of wilderness, and I’m also working the Many Voices Symposium (in April 2019). We will have eight FVCC students tell us their stories of hardship and how they “got through.” It should be incredibly inspiring!

Style
KALISPELL
Kalispell is an eclectic community, with artists and bankers co-mingling over a plate of tapas, then moving down the street to shoot some pool. It’s ballet class for the kids while mom and dad browse through used books or sip a latte while a bass player plucks away in the corner. It’s hard to pinpoint Kalispell style, exactly, but our spirit is in our balance, between our work life and our home life, and between playing
and building. We might spend the morning putting up a fence for our horses, but in the evening we’re just as likely to be tasting a craft cocktail made with local spirits or a hard-to-find bottle of wine. We think it’s an art we’ve nearly perfected around these parts — staying on top of the latest innovations, whether that’s working in tech or mastering the science of manufacturing, and remembering what really matters, the time with each other and the land that keeps it all in perspective. So be sure to catch a little bit of everything. Push yourself to climb that next ridge, carve that final turn, or run that extra mile. But don’t forget to appreciate it all after the fact, and share it with the friendly face sitting on the next barstool or across the campfire.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF when you think of Montana? Cowboy boots? Grizzly bears? A farmer putting up hay? Sure, we have a little of all of that. But how about boutique shops selling designer clothes? Artisan bakeries and funky little coffee shops? Yoga classes and mixed-martial arts gyms? Groups of 30-somethings sipping craft brews and answering trivia questions with their friends? Because we’ve got that too.

FLATHEAD CHERRIES Come summer, pink and red-stained fingertips are a sign of a snack well-snacked. Despite being world-famous, the pleasantly sweet and very juicy “Flathead” cherry is not actually its own species—farmers around Flathead Lake grow Lapins, Sweetheart, Rainier, Van, Stella, Lambert, and Skeena cherries. Turns out, the specific variety doesn’t matter terribly much, because it’s actually the mild lake-influenced climate, pure waters, and fertile soil that make Flathead cherries the brightest and most flavorful on earth. You can find hints of the Flathead cherry on almost any locally-minded menu in Northwest Montana. The berry brings a lot to the table, playing well with so many other flavors.

Glacier Distillery’s Fireweed, a gold medal winner at 2017 Sip International, is a bourbon made by blending cherry brandy distilled from Flathead cherries. “The dark sweet flavors of Flathead cherries are perfect to tame the oaky bite of a classic bourbon cocktail. So perfect that we married them in a bottle,” says Nic Lee, owner of Glacier Distillery, located near the entrance to Glacier National Park. “We crush, ferment, distill and barrel age cherry brandy made with Flathead Lake cherries to blend with bourbon in our Fireweed Bourbon with Cherry Brandy Liqueur. This way we get to enjoy the delicious taste of summer year round.”
Desoto Grill, located in the historic The Forge building in downtown Kalispell, serves up a smoked chicken with a cherry glaze. “The cherries have a certain richness,” says owner Shawnna Steele. “They’re not overpowering, like a lot of fruits. They have a richer flavor that matches really well with the savory that matches really well with our smoked flavors.”

SWEET What’s a better treat than cherry ice cream? “A classic summer flavor is our Flathead Cherry Chocolate,” says Marissa Keenan, owner of Sweet Peaks Ice Cream, with locations in Kalispell, Whitefish, Bigfork, and beyond. “We get fresh cherries from the shores of Flathead Lake, and then they’re pitted and chopped and mixed into a sweet cream base with chocolate chips. These Flathead cherries are fantastic—the flavor is such a win for us.”

SAFE GUARDING NATURE’S GIFT Photo Credit: Left: Tony Bynum. Right: MT Office of Tourism Business Development, Bottom: Glacier National Park
KALISPELL IS ONE OF THE LAST American frontiers, and one of the last places to be settled in this vast state. In the late 19th century, men like James J. Hill pushed the boundaries of commuter access farther and farther West with his epic Empire Builder train line, which brought travelers seeking an escape to Northwest Montana for the first time. But for years before that, Kalispell was wild, rugged and untamed, and that spirit has never truly left. The landscape you see around you was actually carved during the last Ice Age, when glaciers moved through Northwest Montana, leaving behind awe-inspiring places like Flathead Lake and Glacier National Park, unique pieces of earth that would later take on powerful spiritual significance to Native tribes like the Blackfeet, Bitterroot Salish, Upper Pend d’Oreille and Kootenai. Chief Mountain in Glacier Park is one of the most sacred places on earth
to a number of Western tribes, including the Blackfeet, and a drive east of the park to the towns of Browning and Heart Butte bring visitors onto the Blackfeet reservation, where they can explore more of the history, art and culture that this land’s original occupants have kept alive. Keeping this place pristine is an important part of life for almost everyone who lives here. The millions of acres of national park, national forest, wilderness areas and state lands are protected by the government, and stewarded by local residents and a number of nonprofits dedicated to keeping Northwest Montana wild and free. Conservation groups like the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation, Glacier National Park Conservancy, Flathead Lake Biological Station, Montana Wilderness Association, Flathead Land Trust and countless others work every day to ensure Northwest Montana’s waters remain clear, its parks remain free from human-caused decay, and its wild
plants and animals have ample habitat. The clean, clear world around you in Kalispell is our gift from nature, and we treat it that way, but not without the valiant effort by residents and visitors alike to keep it pure. Please be a good friend of nature while you’re here, and keep Northwest Montana beautiful, rugged and a little untamed for the generations to come.

ARTS & CULTURE
&
WHERE NATURE ART MERGE ARTS & CULTURE
MONTANA IS KNOWN FOR ITS SPECTACULAR UNSPOILED NATURE so you’d probably assume that Kalispell is a place for skiers, hikers and anglers. But Kalispell is also a place for creatives, ranchers and tech companies, foodies, history buffs and lovers of the arts. It’s where rugged western roots merge with the sights and sounds of today’s art and music. Experiencing the history and traditions of Kalispell adds a great deal of perspective to your time in the outdoors. It helps to understand how this community took root here and how we continue to balance economy and culture with the wildness that surrounds us.

EQUESTRIAN Western heritage brings to light the celebration of the partnership between horse and rider, working together creating a synergistic balance. In Montana that includes rodeos, trail rides, and the largest Eventing competition in the U.S. The Event at Rebecca Farm is a four-day competition in July which features more than 500 competitors from around the world. American style rodeos generally feature numerous events such as tie-down roping, team roping, saddle bronc riding, and barrel racing. Kalispell’s rodeo event calendar includes novice and professional rodeo events year-round. Or put yourself in the saddle on a trail ride in Glacier National Park with Swan Mountain Outfitters. LIVE THEATRE The Flathead Valley region is a hotbed of live theatre, particularly during summer, when the Bigfork Summer Playhouse and the Alpine Theatre Project shift into high gear with multiple concurrent productions featuring professional actors. Opportunities to see remarkable stage performances run year-round, thanks to
the work of the Whitefish Theater Company, specializing in fine community theatre as well as concerts by touring artists. MONTANA IS A SYMPHONY The Glacier Symphony and Chorale has been the premier source of classical and modern music for over 30 years. The 280 professional and volunteer musicians comprise the full orchestra that performs a variety of selections including classical, holiday and pops concerts, Festival Amadeus, and accompaniment for world-class and emerging guest artists. LOCAL ARTISTS & CRAFTSMEN Works by local artists can be found on the walls and shelves of Kalispell’s numerous galleries and artist coops. Many local artists encourage studio visits as well, where you can get a sense of the process, personal history and inspiration behind their creations. In a state as scenic and captivating as Montana, it’s not surprising that the artwork produced here is just as enthralling.

HISTORY The Conrad Mansion Museum is the 1895 home of Kalispell’s founder, Charles Conrad. Designed by Kirtland Cutter, the 13,000 square foot mansion is one of the most outstanding examples of railroadglory-days architecture in the Pacific Northwest. The Mansion is open for tours from May-October and for special events throughout the year. The Museum at Central School was built in 1895 and served as a school and community college until 1999. Today it features interactive displays appealing to all ages to learn about northwest Montana’s beginnings, from geological formations, the logging and railroad heritage and Montana’s Indian culture. The museum is open for tours Monday-Friday year-round. From the early days, artists like Charles M. Russell have captured and illuminated the Old American West and the spirit of Big Sky Country. The Hockaday Museum of Art is housed in the centuryold Carnegie Library and features a permanent collection of historic and modern art on Glacier National Park along with rotating exhibits of regional and national artists. The Hockaday is open for tours Tuesday-Saturday year-round.

Glacier Symphony & Chorale For more than 20 years, Maestro John Zoltek has been front and center with the Glacier Symphony and Chorale, growing the organization into one of the more well-respected music organizations in the entire state. The Glacier Symphony is based out of downtown Kalispell and puts on concerts yearround, including the weeklong Festival Amdeus and the annual summer pops outdoor concert at Rebecca Farm. Zoltek’s roots are in big city conducting, and when he came to the Flathead Valley years ago he never expected to make it his home, but the Rhode Island native fell in love with the land, the people and the flourishing arts community in and around Kalispell. WHAT DID YOU KNOW AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT KALISPELL WHEN YOU GOT HERE IN 1997? When I moved here I basically didn’t know anything, except that it was close to Glacier National Park. What I did quickly realize were a couple things: That there was a lot of community support for the arts in general and also that there was a lot of growth potential … In terms of viability and strength and quality, the arts organizations have developed remarkably. This is a tribute not only to the people that are invested in fine arts but also the good folks of Kalispell that support us in various ways. THE POPS CONCERT AT REBECCA FARM IN KALISPELL IS ONE OF YOUR MOST SUCCESSFUL EVENTS. WHY DOES THAT EVENT HAVE SUCH A BROAD APPEAL? We’ve had a long tradition of doing that, for almost 20 years now, and that’s been a very strong, Kalispell-based, outdoor, fun event for a wide range of audience types. You get the regular symphony-goers and we draw a lot of people that just want to go to the event; the fact that its outdoors and you get to throw a Frisbee around and hang out with your friends and family and drink wine, that’s a big deal. That’s been our signature summer event for Kalispell and that’s worked very, very well for us.” WHAT ABOUT KALISPELL HAS KEPT YOU LIVING AND WORKING HERE FOR SO LONG? I just love it, because it provides me with quick access to the city but I also have great solitude and I’m really close to nature. It’s perfect for somebody like me because I rely a lot on quiet. My personal experience living in Kalispell on the whole has been very, very positive … It’s that great combination between people that, for the most part, respect one another and we all sort of enjoy the same ethos of the area that we live in.

TRAVEL TIPS
TRAVEL TIPS
Montanans value our natural landscapes - they are the backbone of our heritage and lifestyle. While enjoying the diverse recreation in northwest Montana, we ask that you remember a few of the essentials: PLAN AHEAD and prepare for weather changes and emergencies and be knowledgeable of the regulations in the area you’ll visit. Don’t depend on cell service in remote areas. BACKPACK ESSENTIALS Hat, sturdy boots, sunscreen, ample water supply, high energy snacks, rain gear and extra clothing, first aid supplies, trail map and bear spray. LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND and take back what you bring. Help preserve the spectacular unspoiled nature. CLEAN, DRAIN AND DRY. Stop at all inspection stations for motorized and hand-propelled watercraft. Please help to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. Promise to BE RESPONSIBLE with fire, especially during the dry summer months RESPECT WILDLIFE Montana is home to a variety of wildlife – from the omnipresent deer and mountain goats, to bears and the elusive wolverine. Forego the selfie or close up shot of wildlife and observe from afar. Don’t tempt interactions by storing your food securely. BE CONSIDERATE of others and let nature’s sounds prevail.

RAILS TO TRAILS TRANSFORMING DOWNTOWN KALISPELL
Photo Credit: Top: Tom Robertson, Bottom: Connor Welles
If it wasn’t for the train lines that ran through Northwest Montana, Kalispell as we know it would not exist today. The Great Northern Railway’s Empire Builder line made its way to town in 1892 and with it came thousands of workers, visitors and explorers who would become the early settlers of this town. On its way back east, the trains would take loads of cattle, timber and more to places like Chicago, Minneapolis and Fargo. The Empire Builder still runs today, bridging Chicago to Seattle, and the line makes a handful of stops in Northwest Montana, but Kalispell’s main mode of transportation has shifted away from the train in recent decades. There are still some remnants of the rail line — most visible on the Rails to Trails system, which run
from Somers to Kila and directly through Kalispell — and in the next few years an even more dramatic transformation will give downtown Kalispell yet another jolt of energy. The rail lines that run across Main Street on the north end of downtown are being retired and converted into a modern bike and pedestrian thoroughfare that will connect to the Rails to Trails entrance on Kalispell’s west side. This project is scheduled to be completed in 2020. The Core and Rail project was a result of hard work and collaboration between the

Our grain goes to a cattle rancher to feed his cattle. I joined the Kalispell Downtown Association so I could meet all the business owners and see all the projects that are going on downtown and be part of the change.

Bias Brewing
Gabe and his family moved to Kalispell eight years ago from Bend, Oregon, and immediately they saw similarities between the two mountain towns. While Bend was at the end of its transformation into a buzzing tourist destination and craft beer paradise, Kalispell’s transformation was just beginning. Now eight years later, Gabe himself is part of that transformation, serving on the Kalispell Downtown Association’s board and joining the husband-and-wife ownership team of Adam and Amanda Robertson as Bias Brewing’s general manager months before its tap room opened in 2018. In less than a year, the brewery has become a key piece of what Mariman calls the “Beer-Muda Triangle” of Bias Brewing, SunRift Beer Co. and Kalispell Brewing Co., all in located downtown Kalispell.
City of Kalispell, local businesses and residents alike. This dream turned reality will only add to the growth and vibrancy that downtown Kalispell has been experiencing over recent years. By increasing public art, commercial and residential development, and advancing the current trail system, the Core and Rail project is an exciting new chapter for Kalispell moving in to the next decade.
WHAT DID YOU LIKE ABOUT KALISPELL BEFORE YOU MOVED HERE AND WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN IN THE EIGHT YEARS SINCE YOU ARRIVED? There’s a lot of people moving to the area that are like us, they’re young families, they’re just starting out. When we got here we didn’t know anybody and now we have a group of friends, 20 or so couples, they’re all young, hard-working, and they’re starting their families. We really liked the fact that Kalispell was adding jobs and adding young, upwardly mobile people. WHY DID BIAS CHOOSE TO SET UP SHOP IN DOWNTOWN KALISPELL AND HOW HAS THE BREWERY BEEN A GOOD COMMUNITY PARTNER? They chose Kalispell because they wanted
WHY SHOULD KALISPELL BE A STOP ON A CRAFT BEER ENTHUSIAST’S NEXT EXCURSION? I think Kalispell’s a great place for craft beer tourism. We’ve got what some people are referring to as the Beer-Muda Triangle. We’ve got Kalispell Brewing (KBC), which is the mainstay, and then SunRift and Bias all within walking distance. We all offer a different niche and a different style. Bias offers a very unique arrangement of beers, most of our beers are experimental, we only have a couple of flagships. Right now we’ve got 14 beers on tap … We have a really wide range of products and it’s our mission to build community through craft beer and craft brewing.

A GROWTH ECONOMY
For the past two years, Kalispell has been named the third fastest growing micropolitan community in the nation and there are no predictions of a slow down any time soon. Known as the economic powerhouse of Northwest Montana, Kalispell is home to topquality medical services, excellent schools, world-class manufacturing, a bustling retail scene, and where adventure meets opportunity.

HEALTHCARE The healthcare community in the Flathead Valley is centered around Kalispell Regional Healthcare, which boasts a 353-bed complex that includes a newly expanded emergency department, the Montana Children’s Medical Center, the Digestive Health Institute, comprehensive cancer services, rehabilitation programs, and more. In addition, KRH has affiliate locations just north of Kalispell in Whitefish, and many satellite properties that serve outlying communities. Immanuel Lutheran Communities is a full-service retirement community that features independent living, memory care services, outpatient rehabilitation, and has added over 150,000 square feet of new construction in the last few years.
CREATING A COMMUNITY Civic advancement and government organizations across Kalispell have come together to develop plans to update Kalispell’s core area and revitalize several areas in town. The original railroad tracks that have served Kalispell since the late 1800s will be removed and replaced with a linear park that will span nearly a mile and a half in length. With the removal of the tracks, over 40 acres of land will be opened for potential development, including highdensity housing, retail, restaurant, and commercial spaces right in the heart of downtown. Additionally, Kalispell is layered with development incentives including tax increment financing, New Market Tax Credits, zoning perks, and Opportunity Zone benefits that continue to entice redevelopment and new construction. 41

A Look at FVCC’s Occupational Trades Program As you walk into the Occupational Trades building at Flathead Valley Community College, you can’t help but notice the sparks from the plasma cutter and welding bays, hear the whirling sounds of CNC machines, and notice the dozens of students undeniably engaged in hands-on projects. Completed in 2007, the Occupational Trades building brought together, for the first time, various programs the college offered all under one roof. What started as a few courses in welding, automotive, and woodworking, has now blossomed into 14 different programs, including advanced manufacturing, electrical technology, firearms technology, industrial machine technology, non-destructive testing, welding technology, and more. “We are a community college that serves the needs of our community,” said Peter Fusaro, Director of Trades and Industrial Arts at the college. “Over the years we have adapted our programs as a direct response to community needs and as a reflection of growth of certain areas of our local economy.” Flathead County is home to more than 300 unique manufacturers; a number that continues to rise. The advent of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines has reshaped the perception of the manufacturing industry from being historically dark and dirty, to one that now supports jobs that are highly-technical, safe, rewarding, and consistently higher-paying on average than any other industry. Recognizing this, and hearing constant demands from area manufacturers about a lack of labor, the Occupational Trades program has been reshaping their offerings to better meet the needs of students and employers, now boasting an impressive arsenal of CNC lathes and mills, and five large bays of the most cutting-edge equipment available to even the most world-class manufacturers. Occupational Trades students have numerous opportunities to work closely with the local community, but also with fellow students from around the world, including through a partnership program with an Advanced Manufacturing and Electronics Technology Program in Manizales, Colombia. The Occupational Trades department has also developed an accredited Brewing Sciences program to serve the growing number of microbreweries in Montana. Students set to earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Brewing Sciences and Operations are given real-world experience on both the manufacturing and retail side of the industry. The Brewing Academy of Montana has a close relationship with breweries across the Flathead Valley, giving students internship opportunities outside of their coursework, which includes manufacturing beer at FVCC and managing retail sales, as FVCC is the first college in the nation to receive a federal license to sell their product in taprooms. Through the increase in program offerings and a recently completed student-housing facility on campus, Fusaro says he has been seeing the number of students enrolled in the Occupational Trades programs consistently on the rise. Over the next few years, Occupational Trades instructors hope to increase course offerings to include finishing treatments and the development of programs that manufacture more products out of recycled plastics. TOP-QUALITY EDUCATION Kalispell is privileged to have a strong education community that supports people of all ages. Kalispell Public Schools, named one of the top five school districts in the state, welcomed students into its newest elementary school in August 2018 and is currently making updates to its middle school, two high schools, vo-tech center, and alternative learning school. Additionally, Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC) is home to a growing number of students and is widely considered one of the top community colleges in the west. In 2019, FVCC will open a new library and break ground on a $15M student center and lecture and performing arts center, which will become the new home of the renowned Glacier Symphony and Chorale. TRANSPORTATION Glacier Park International Airport is served by five major airlines – Alaska, Allegiant, American, Delta, and United – which fly to 13 major cities. Growth of the airport has been record-breaking year over year, which has led to the addition of many routes announced in 2018, including new service to Dallas, Chicago, and Los Angeles on American Airlines, and Phoenix on Allegiant Airlines. In 2020, Glacier Park International Airport is scheduled to break ground on a 40,000
ENERGIZED COMMUNITY square-foot terminal expansion that will create several additional gates to serve continued air service expansion. Along with the development of new air transportation has been significant improvements on the ground. In 2018 Kalispell was awarded a $12.75M federal grant to expand a portion of the US 93 Alternative Route, which will dramatically improve drivability and traffic. Since the full-length completion of the road in 2016, the Kalispell Bypass has added over $1.2B of economic impact and 760 jobs.

FLATHEAD AREA YOUNG PROFESSIONALS Young professionals are establishing careers in the Flathead Valley due to the area’s offering of a strong worklife balance and unbeatable outdoor opportunities. Flathead Area Young Professionals is an organization dedicated to developing professionals between the ages of 21 to 39 as they advance early in their careers. COMMUNITY PROFILE CLINT EKERN Owner & Creative Director, Sky Vault
As a young professional who wanted to do something different in his career, coupled with a dream of becoming his own boss, Clint Ekern discovered a passion, hidden talent, and lucrative business venture all at once. What started as a weekend hobby taking videos at functions and events around town, became the career shift Clint was looking for. With a background in mortgage lending, Sky Vault first emerged as a media resource for local real estate agents to better highlight available properties via drone footage and high-quality interior walk-throughs. Clint decided not to focus just on shooting quality video but rather devoted the better part of every evening and weekend learning the post-production editing necessary to deliver top-quality final products to clients. When the head of a local organization asked to partner on a project outside his experience level in late spring 2018, Clint’s go-getter personality and constant drive toward success led him to begin the journey of developing one of the most recognizable media companies in the Flathead Valley. Understanding that a path of success comes from patience and practice, Clint reached out to a variety of local organizations to partner on video projects that would test his skills and allow him to learn. “I love developing personal relationships and think the tight-knit connections of the community in the Flathead is something really special,” said Ekern. “People were so accepting of working with me when I wanted to learn something new, and it’s been fun watching the quality of projects steadily increase.” Over the past year, Sky Vault has provided footage for top events in the Flathead, including annual fundraisers, professional rodeos, weddings, and large-scale conferences as well as promotional videos for countless small businesses. “By working with local small business owners and organizations, I feel like I’m helping them take steps to grow and therefore grow this great community. They’re some of my favorite projects to work on,” said Clint. Clint understands the risks of being a new business, but with dozens of new clients and a calendar of projects booked so far this year, he’s hopeful and excited for what is in store for the future of Sky Vault. Clint spent most of his childhood in the Flathead Valley and has enjoyed watching Kalispell grow up over the last 30 years. After graduating from Montana State University in Bozeman, Clint came back to the Flathead to start his career and begin a family. As a young professional in the Flathead, he believes now is the greatest time to live in the area, crediting an unbeatable opportunity for work-life balance. “I can be in the office, editing videos or conducting interviews, and then at one of the many lakes or on a hike within 20 minutes any direction. To be able to do what people go on vacations for, like hunting, skiing, or hiking, every single weekend while also running a business is a great opportunity.”
