Turning the alley into a gallery for street art and murals will give people a way to express themselves and share their work with the community. This gives users of the space unique experiences as more art is added, creating a draw to the space. Suspended mirrored sculptures will contribute to the artisitc lense and increase visibility during the night. The reflective material will maximize lighting to help keep the alley safe and encoourage exploration.

CONCEPTUAL RENDERING OF ALLEY REMODEL Adding more play into daily life has shown to help manage stress and boost human connection. Bringing color into the allley and adding more lighting will help brighten the space and encourage passerbys to explore. Pick-up basketball games increase the sense of community by allowing anyone to come and play together. To maintain accessibility, basketball hoops will be mounted at a variety of heights.

C O M M U N I T Y : Each painted block can be filled with work from local Madison artists. This will give people another way to get involved and show community support. Artwork pictured is from local artists and work resulting from the Black Lives Matter protests during June of 2020.

S A F E T Y : New design elements are customized to fit the safety needs of the space Light reflective paint increases illumination in the space for nighttime visibility. This also offers users a unique visual experience of the alley depending on the time of day.

P L A Y : Hawthorne Court helps bring more moments of fun and play into people’s daily lives. The bright colors add energy to the space to create an immersive experience. Additionally, the suspended mirror sculptures, as pictured below, help reflect light down the alley, while adding an element of fun through the warped form.

Over the years, and more recently with the emergence of a global pandemic, the prevalence of student homelessness on college campuses across the country has increased significantly. Data shows that it is more common for students to encounter some form of housing insecurity than have all their needs met during their time at college. The Lakeshore Mainstay is a new housing and resource facility that promotes the well-belling, cleanliness, and health of our struggling student population. Its purpose is to offer support, resources, and guidence to students facing housing and financial insecurity. The design must be mindful of the diverse backgrounds and adversities of residents, using truama-informed design practices to create a space that offers choice, comfort, and privacy, ultimately help students redirect more of their focus to their education.
