Adaptive Ecologies A Living Environment Based on Self-Organization This thesis introduces a new living environment based on datadriven generative processes. It focuses on circulation as a driver for community life, freedom of choice, appropriation and adaptation over-time. This system acts as the bottom-up spacemaking process that is continuously made and re-made by the inhabitant’s decision and flexibly inhabited over the existing cities that can respond to different situations.

“Today the intersections of information, life and matter display complexities that suggest the possibility of a much deeper synthesis. Within this context, however, architecture is being forced to radically refactor its response to new social and cultural challenges and an accelerated process of urbanization.”

A Living Environment Based on Self-Organization This thesis introduces a new living environment based on data-driven generative processes. It focuses on circulation as a driver for community life, freedom of choice, appropriation and adaptation over-time. This system acts as the bottom-up space-making process that is continuously made and re-made by the inhabitant’s decision and flexibly inhabited over the existing cities that can respond to different situations. The investigation is on the interplay between strategic limitations set by the architect (as a process designer) and the opportunities for participation by the residents and thus to create chances for freedom of choice and individualization of individuals. Therefore, more diverse results will better suit to inhabitants needs than a conventional top-down housing project where the architect and developer decide every last detail for the residents. Through combining the theory of space syntax and the simple idea of the network - as a predictor of movement patterns. It forms the foundation for the data-driven process of generating a new circulation system with freedom of choice, appropriation, and adaptation - a new notion of what housing ought to be in the current society.

Wo Che Estate

Open space (1/F)

Elevated circulation

Location: ShaTin, New Territories Year: 1977 Number of flat: ~18,168

Everyday items

Footbridge is a major circulation for all residents in this estate. It connects residential blocks and ShaTin station.

The open space at the upper floor is frequently used by the residents

~250 shops -> 18,168 residents

Wo Che plaza contains the shops that can fulfill everyday needs of resident.

Because of the elevated circulation, open spaces at G/F are hardly used.

Site Observation: 19 October (Fri) 7:30-8:30 15:00-17:00

Number of flat: 360 Max. resident: 3,240

Analysis Wo Che Estate consists of 13 residential blocks, around 30,000 residents. The circulation system is separating pedestrians and vehicles at different levels, for the elevated circulation footbridge is connecting to all residential blocks, shopping mall, parks and a path to Shatin MTR station. As shown as the red arrow, the people movement is pushing towards to Shatin direction, and everyone is using the same path to their destination. It is an efficient way to bring all residents from their flat to MTR station without crashing with vehicles, but at the same time, residents are losing their choices and this circulation system is difficult to adapt for different social situations over-time

Analysis Although more shops located in Shatin, Wo Che has only one shopping mall and few small shops. Under the site observation, most of the residents are buying foods (especially breakfast) and living goods there. In response to the government’s intention “fulfillment of everyday needs,” it is no doubt that this system can satisfy the “needs,” but cannot satisfy people’s “desire” under the restricted freedom of circulation system. For the open space, the people gather only along the main circulation and the planned area, the rest of spaces are hardly used. In some sense, the circulation is not only controlling the movement, but also affecting the behavior in the surroundings.

2. Sitting space Residents sit in the mainstream — allow them to look at the people flow.

1. Forced circulation An efficient (only one) way to get to the MTR station, all residents follow this routine.

3. Empty park at G/F The separation between footbridge and G/F - park at G/F is hardly used.

The Makeshift City This project is to propose a prototype of shiftable architecture that integrating a system of living and making (long-term and short-term) for the urban dwelling. As an alternative dwelling, it also acts as a critique of the current housings and the paradigms that have dominated urbanism for decades in Hong Kong. By taking the area of Fanling North as a point of departure, the project is realizing a skilled society through incorporating the shifting live and make unit and also opening up the possibilities of merging the conventional residential block and the live-make unit.

City as Palimpsest The project aims to trace back the existing urban settlement and activities, and provide the new layers of collective living space into To Kwa Wan. Under the photo-taking exercise, some characteristics of To Kwa Wan have been observed such as building edges and informal setting within the lane. The various building edges in the site form the different interfaces which affect how we see and perceive the environment. Also, the lane is most interesting part for me to look at, the informal setting inside the lane is creating the sense of exploration as well as increasing the curiosity of the space. For the physical aspect, insufficient space for the activities at the ground of tenement buildings is a serious issue for the surroundings. Therefore, the planning strategy is to provide the extensional open spaces for existing resident, as well as penetrate their activities into the new collective housing area. Various programs are placed along the open space such as workshop, performance space, and handicraft market for the residents and public in the use of leisure, breathing, and comfort in the act of inhabiting. The approach with observed street quality for residential tower and podium is proposing a new way of collective living in To Kwa Wan. The individuals can explore the meaning of certain setting through participation. This project is somewhere between a critique of the current housing and a proposal for imaging new ways of dwelling in Hong Kong. The collage shows the observed feaures of To Kwa Wan, various building edges and lines, modular facade, the lane in between the old buildings and the hidden activities inside the lane.

This is a creative process beyond structural and spatial efficiency to invoke the aesthetics of the sublime. This project is to imagine emotions that we associate with the remembrance of a person that is important to us and picture a sequence of space for the ceremonial act of spreading ashes. This project is to transfer the emotion from the images taken by photographers to the architectural spaces, then forms a garden of remembrance.

EMOTIONAL TRANSITION

It starts by selecting three visual images that represented emotions and spaces that we have imagined. From the concentration to new beginnning. At the beginning, people should put down all the emotions and focus on their journey, direct light makes people concentrate on the space. During the memorial rituals, people communicates with their parents or friends who have passed away in the spiritual way. This process is not only communicating with sounds, but also interacting with shadows. After the rituals, people will walk in the dark road, the skylight will enter into the space and make the space being lighter, like resurrection.

SHOPPING ARCADE Year 3 Sem B

Location: Soho, Sheung Wan

Site Area: 3550m2

Movement / Intersection / Program This project is going to design a shopping arcade in SOHO district of Sheung Wan. The main component of the programme should be the spaces for shop units. Beside the retails, at least one open space which can be opened to public for 24 hours should be provided. SOHO, Sheung Wan is the multi-cultural place, and it is a valuable district for people to memorize. It houses variety shop types and social activities in/outside the shops. It gives people two sides’ perspective, the traditional Chinese side and Western side. Another feature of the SOHO is that the typography of the site which is very steep gradient.

REINTEGRATION OF DISCONNECTED CULTURE Under the observation, there are several various cultural shops such as bars, cafes and Chinese old shops. These contains the people with multi-cultural background, they locate at the same location without any interaction. One of the objectives of this design is extending the paths which will integrated with the shopping arcade and it blurs the boundary between the shopping arcade and the site. This project is to connect back the relationship between Western and Chinese culture by controlling their movement on the proposed paths. Also, the open space will be merged with the shopping arcade which is solving the problem of detached open spaces in Sheung Wan/ The concept model shows two different elements merging together toward the same direction. This is a starting point for me to study the mutual relationship between various culture and the movement inside the shopping arcade.

SOCIAL PLATFORM The retail spaces formed by various paths are also served as a social platform for people. The corresponding shops are provided for the people which extend the existing activities into the shopping arcade. From a, interior garden is located at the intersection point of the shopping arcade, as a gathering space for both elderly, drinking people and visitors/residents. The exhibition in b is also the interaction space for all types of people, same space and people with different cultural background will be the interesting point for this space. They can exchange knowledge, visual connection will also be remained by a spiral circulation. On the upper level, c shows that bars and Chinese old shop are arranged in the different location with visual relationship. They can learn each other by observing the activities. ISHINOMAKI CITY HALL - COMPETITION

The Shiroiya hotel is a Japanese project at the detailed design stage which comprises the renovation of an existing hotel and the new built hotel blocks. In this project, I have involved in the design of space and facade for new block as well as the entrance and furniture for existing block. Not only carrying out my own options , but also I had assisted in the production for daily review by Sou Fujimoto such as rendering and physical models.

This is a competition for Ishinomaki city hall in Japan, my duites were slightly different with the Shiroiya hotel which included concept studies, 3D modelling and rendering. Although this competition had less design opportunities for me, but the most useful knowledge I have learnt from this competition is presentation, my skills on graphic and diagram has enhanced dramatically. Also, I have explored the way that how to start a large-scale compeition like Ishinomaki city hall.

A housing typology study for future Hong Kong housing development. The idea is to envision a new living style which encourages collective and shared style, and at the same time allows individual house ownership in a high-rise context. Three basic house modules which reflect the old HK village culture are defined: row houses, terrace house and lifted house. These modules become units to build up the building. The Houses, or the building, transform itself according to owner decision to add-on different parts to fit their lifestyle, and the connectivity of the vertical transition also help to enhance collective living.

Design Idea Competition for Wan Chai Community Green Station

Team member: member: Edmond Edmond Wong Wong Studio, Studio, Phil Phil Tsang Tsang Team

“4 Huts” showcases to citizens 4 crucial ways to reduce solid waste - Reduction, Collection, Sorting and Upcycling. Each of the steps are demonstrated in one of the 4 connected huts which are arranged along the flow of operation of the station. 4 Huts makes waste reduction Easy, Creative and Stylish, blending the practices into the daily life of Wan Chai citizens. Public’s misconception of “recyclables” as refuses should be dismissed. The idea that “recyclables” are useful resources should be promoted. Instead of hiding the recyclables collection and sorting process in enclosed rooms like existing CGSs, we propose to showcase it. The recyclables unloaded and stored in the Collection Hut at north are sorted on a long counter in the adjacent Sorting Hut. The act of sorting done by staff in handsome uniform are shown to public just like a chef showing off in a glass walled kitchen. It is hygienic and systematic. Upcycling Hut, the largest hut, is a community workshop. The workshop equipped with tools is open to public. Citizens are encouraged to take their old or broken items here to refurbish.
