Samya

The word Samya derives from Sanskrit, the Philosophical language in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. It means equal to everyone and seeing everyone equally by spiritual understanding. I chose to promote this message through my prints and final collection not only in relation to the current situation in Sri Lanka but because I think that it is a message that continuously needs to be communicated strongly across the globe. There are many countries that have been and still are experiencing conflict whilst displaying acts of violence, sexism and hatred towards their own people. My project is a collection of garments celebrating Sri Lanka for its beauty and culture whilst informing people of what has taken place there over the past five years communicating a message of equality within humanity. ‘100,000 AND COUNTING’ stands for the estimated death toll from the Sri Lankan Civil War so far. The count is on-going. This is a considered collection full of colour and contemporary, bold prints designed for unisex casual wear with the purpose of supporting a cause.
