CORPORATE ORDERS

CORPORATE ORDERS

Corporate orders refer to a bulk order of a specific product. Order is received in the mail or through direct meetings. For the corporate orders, the buyer provides all the necessary information like fabric, color, embroidery or print details, size ratio, expected price, and other important details. Multinational companies either get these orders made for daily wear or a specific event. These same things are also discussed in the meeting when the buyer directly meets the company owner with his requirements. USI receives bulk orders from many multi national companies based in Gurgaon and Noida. The maximum no. of orders should be more than 50 Pieces. The price range can also vary from the amount of order. USI has worked for MNCs like Airsewa, Maxxis, Taj Safari, KPMG, 8 Premium black, Samsung Etc. From the last year, USI has also started working on kidswear but only for bulk orders. USI has worked for many schools like Singapore international preparatory school for making school uniforms for them such as jackets, track pants and T-shirts. So the first step after receiving the order is organizing a pre-production meeting. and then deciding on making the pre-production sample. Once the PPS is approved by the buyer. They are said to pay the advance money before the production.

MAIL

MEETING

Two main sources of receiving orders

17

SAMPLING AND PRODUCTION FLOW

Pre - Production Meeting (P.P.M)

After understanding the requirements of the customer send through mail. A meeting is organised on how we Will achieve the initial sample for the buyer. At this stage we also check if we have enough resources or not like fabric, buttons etc.

Pre - Production Sample (P.P.S)

A PPS sample is developed for the buyer with all the details and requirements provided by the buyer. These samples are presented to the buyer before starting the bulk production. The PPS has to be perfect because the whole production is dependent on it.

Time and Action Plan (T and A) When the PPS is approved by the buyer. We can finally start with the bulk production. For which a T and A plan is made on how the production will begin. It include cutting, surface development, stiching, ironing, packaging and dispatch dates.

Bill Of Quantity (B.O.Q) B.O.Q refers to all the materials we have purchased for the order. A list is made on how much we have spent on the order and how much material we are left with. This thing eventually help in making the final costing of the order.

Costing Final costing is done for a single piece that it is multiplied with the no. of order. The costing is shared with the buyer for advance payment of the order.

Job description and Responsibility

Projects Undertaken

PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN

Here are some of the task that were assigned to me, and i mostly worked on developing samples for corporate orders. photoshoot of samples for buyers. here are are the following details of the work which i did during my internship duration -

T-shirt Festival Pattern segregation Old cuttings segregation Graphics for vestige

T - SHIRT FESTIVAL

USI organized a T-shirt festival in which all the old stock about 4 to 5-year olds were put up for sale. The segregation was made according to the estimated price range starting from 100 to 500 INR. First, a list of all the products was made that we can sell in the sale. The sale happened in the Noida factory outlet only as there are many factories nearby. The target audience for this sale were mainly factory workers and regular customers. Who will buy the same good quality clothes at a cheaper amount? I worked with Pooja mam (warehouse assistant) for the segregation of clothes that can be a part of the sale. We looked for old garments, single pieces or designs, which were less in quantity according to the size ratio. not only t-shirts, jackets, trousers, old stock of women garment were also being put up for sale. My work only included segregation of clothes that were fit for the sale. Later the pricing and everything was done by the production manager and warehouse assistant. so, the whole idea behind organizing this sale was so that the USI can get rid of the old stock that was kept in the warehouse for very long.

21

PATTERN SEGREGATION

For this particular task, I was required to check all the patterns in the pattern lab and segregate them, keep the men and women patterns separately. And to make a list of all the patterns that we have. Since the patterns were kept altogether we always had to waste so much of time and effort finding the right pattern. The patterns were hanging on the cloth hangersmaking it too much bulky. because there were 5 to 6 patterns hanging on the same hanger. So more hangers were added to make the wight lesser and only 2 or 3 patterns were hanged on one hanger. There were many patterns whose size ratio was incomplete and some of the patterns were missing I just removed and keep it aside. Many patterns were lying unnecessary in the pattern lab. So, all the things that were not required in the pattern lab were removed from the pattern lab. and after all the changes and arrangements made in the pattern lab, I shared the list of patternswith Pooja mam (production assistant). 22

SEGREGATION OF CUTTINGS

For this particular task, I was told to check all the old cuttings that were kept in the cutting department. I made a list of all the cuttings and also counted the no. of pieces in each bundle. The cuttings were basically four to five years old. It also can be a part of overproduction. Many other cuttings were not in good condition the fabrics were torn out, for some of the sleeves were missing, some didn’t have the back panel and front panels, the colors were also faded. There were both men and women Cuutings that I found in the cutting department. I was told that these cuttings will now be stitched so please do this task productively. In the end, I shared all the details with the designer whom I was working with, and also took one sample from each cutting that will be stitched to make the PPS. But we never worked on this because the priority was corporate order and USI also had less no. of tailors. The production rate was already very slow so that’s why there was a full stop put up on this decision. 23

SCHOOL UNIFORM SAMPLES This order was given by a school uniform vendor. They particularly make samples from different companies and show these samples to school Principals whenever they need new uniforms or up-gradation in school uniform. They always prefer the pricing to be cheap and the quality of fabric to be good. The person wanted three samples one for the jacket and the other one was a tracksuit. They also mentioned, in the beginning, to add red color detailing. I also sketched some of the ideas and got them approved by Ashwinder sir before starting stitching them. There wasn’t much time given to think about the designs I quickly draw them and get them approved. because we need to deliver the samples within one week. I was also told to look for simple details that the cost wouldn’t increase. So following are the samples that were created for the buyer. Sketches developed for this order -

24

Sample of jacket with red color detailing at the collar

25

Sample of track suit with red color detailing on jacket and track pants. for jacket a red colur piping was added on the shoulder line and on track pant a red tape was addes on the side seam.

26

CAD ILLUSTRATIONS Developing cad illustrations for Vestige order, the specifications were given by the buyer on how they want the look of the final t-shirt. They basically need two designs one for business partners and another one for employees. These illustrations were shared with the buyer but due to their expected price which was very low in accordance with the fabric they want, the order got canceled. VESTIGE BUSINESS PARTNER T-SHIRT

PATTERN MAKING - SIS

I and my designer both worked on manipulating patterns for these track pants. The earlier sample that was made from the same pattern were a little big for the required age group. So the buyer demanded shorter length track pants. As there wasn’t any pattern master in the USI me and my designer was permitted to manipulate the pattern and make it according to the customer requirements. The first sample was made with the embroidery near the pocket line. But when the new pattern was made we didn’t add the embroidery, because the customer only wants to see the shorter length.

EMBROIDERY

This was my first ever project for developing embroidery samples for a corporate order. The embroidery for this happened at Okhla for this I had to visit this place multiple times because the quality of the embroidery was not improving. So around 8 to 10 samples were made on a piece of fabric to get the desired outcome.

SUBLIMATION PRINTING

We received an order which needs sublimation printing. USI doesn’t have any permanent sublimation, printing dealers. because they have not worked on such orders from the last 2 to 3 years. So, I was given the task to look for sublimation printing dealers nearby Noida. First, I researched what is sublimation printing. And then contacted many people who were doing this printing, asked for the price, how it is done, and on what fabric it is done. Many of the dealers also shared the images of a sample that are being done at their printing unit. After the verbal communication, I even visited around 4 to 5 printing unit to see things happening in front of my eyes, to see how machines work and also look for cleanliness and the behavior of the staff with the customers. What is sublimation printing? It is a chemical process where a solid turns into a gas without going through a liquid stage. The printers produce an image on sublimation transfer paper with specially made inks for sublimation printing. the design is made on the computer and then it is transferred to the paper through printers. Then using a heat transfer machine the design is printed on the fabric. The heat press machine work on a very high temperature of about 200 to 300 degrees. how it is done? In this process, the heat turns the ink from solid to gas. during the gas state, it just spread through the fibers of the material. When the heat press is removed from the transfer paper, the ink that has been spread throughout the fiber is locked permanently and become part of the fabric. The heat releases the gas from sublimation ink and it also opens the pores of the fabric. The ink return to it’s a solid stage and the fabric pores closes, trapping the ink inside. The best quality of this printing is that it wouldn’t crack peel or fade away. For this printing, the most preferable fabric is mainly 100% polyester or polyester blended fabrics. any fabric with polymeric structure can be used for this printing. Sublimation printing is not friendly to natural fabrics like Cotton. As it will not have good results. but it is only possible on cotton with a special treatment before printing. For good results, a special polyester surface coating is done on the cotton fabric before printing. But this process is time taking and costly. Therefore exporters and retailers always prefer to use 100% polyester fabric for printing. Sublimation printing gives long-lasting prints but after the printing is done the paper can be used again for reprinting because it still has left with ink residue in it. A lot of paper is wasted on daily basis. And it is a chemical driven process.

39

The printing in process for Airsewa and KPMG order.

This is the heat press machine where the fabric panels are placed and the paper is kept upon it. And then the heat is applied. It just only takes 10 to 15 seconds to print and the machine gives an alarm after the printing is done. So, there were 2 orders of sublimation printing which I worked for.

PACKAGING AND DISPATCH

There were many orders for which I was only involved in the packaging and dispatch phase. Two of the orders were from Airsewa (MNC). one was a teal round neck and the other one was white round neck t-shirts. Both of the designs were screen printed. All of a sudden there was a request from the buyers for the urgent dispatch of these orders, that were lying from months at USI. So, everyone inside the company was involved in packaging for these orders. First, the spotting was done for all the pieces because they were not in good condition. A measurement check was also done for all the pieces. Then the ironing happened and these t-shirts were packed and dispatched. Sowtex order and Maxxis order were also among those orders which were kept in the production for a long time.

For Airsewa teal t-shirts a special type of packaging was ordered. Which wasn’t made from plastic they were special paper packaging that were purchased to pack the t-shirts for this order

SUMMARY

The Indian Institute of art and design (IIAD), in collaboration with Kingston University, Uk offers a creative, studio-based education through its rigorous three year BA in Fashion Design program following a one-year Foundation program. We are mentored by industry experts and experienced core and visiting faculty as part of our four-year course at IIAD. During the 4th year the students are required to do a 16-week mandatory internship before the academic year commences. I get an opportunity to work with Uni Style Image (USI) starting from 13th June to 30th September. USI is a retail chain and working with this brand was an amazing experience as I really get to know the insight of how work is done in retail sectors. Working with USI was an achievement in itself as the company has set many benchmarks in the industry from the last 29 years. There was a whole lot of difference in how we are taught at college and how the industry works. My 16-week internship at USI included work that was mostly related to Corporate orders. From developing swatches for the orders to making the initial samples, and learned to make time and action plan to do a daily follow up on what is happening inside the production and how to manage different things at one particular time, was great learning happened during my internship tenure. And I also visited one of the USI stores to know more about the brand and what are the customer's tastes and preferences. I also worked on documenting things that are being always in need and an important source of information whenever required. Working at USI also helped me to see the other side of the fashion industry, the harsh reality of people working at the retail sector, low wages, extra working hours, overproduction, making things faster and faster and usage of plastics not thinking about what impact it will have on the environment. There were many things that were not really appropriate.

48

REFLECTIONS

This 16-week internship at USI was not less than a roller coaster ride. I get to know about the retail industry in a much deeper sense. Every day was new learning. This internship helped in professional as well as personal growth. I even realized that customer satisfaction is really very important, for the growth of the company. As I mostly worked for corporate orders, developing samples to follow up production and packaging and dispatch. At each stage, you have to be aware and make things happen before time runs out. Many times one has to be multitasking because there are so many orders that needed attention and everyone wants the delivery to be made on time. Documentation is also very important for companies who work for corporate orders daily. Many times I was given the task of documenting certain things which can be useful in the future and it will help, other people also. Work at retail is totally different from the process we follow as a designer. They are not at all afraid of copy pasting things from unknown sources. and I learned that is a part of work at the retail sector
