(Architecture, Essay on Art, 1796-7)

Boullée

We traditionally think of the city as a collection of buildings and streets. The carcentric city, however, is shaped by flows. It isn’t a city where the experience of the street matters, nor is it a city where the public hall is of any importance. Instead, departure and destination become the project of priority, and everything in-between becomes an other - an object. The city’s objects are legitimated by the space or, in architectural terms, the ground that urban sprawl provides.

Here, psychoanalysis and architecture find each other in close proximity. Rossi’s Analogous city and the unconscious, as manifested in Freud’s concept of dreamwork, are the only fields where objects are blurred, reconfigured, substituted, merged, condensed, and displaced, but not destroyed.

The city without objects is a speculative project that is conducted mostly through freehand drawing, photography and exploration of physical models. These methods open up a conceptual space that gives freedom to think across the humanities. In this sense, it is similar to the speculative nature of Berlin: A Green Archipelago and Yona Friedman’s Spatial City. This same speculative possibility of architecture is explored by the practices of the Soviet constructivists, Superstudio, Archizoom, Archigram, OMA, Cedric Price, Dogma, to name a few. The proposition is a prolegomenon to any future urbanism that may emerge as a city. 1

1. Immanuel Kant, ProlegomenatoAnyFutureMetaphysics (1783)

The project discusses the intricate relationship between seeing and perceiving, representing, and making the city. The process is one of thinking by iterative making. The text is, therefore, led by the drawings. The project addresses the future by critically reading and communicating the present.

Our cities are increasingly characterised by careless expansion and wasteful development. They negate ideas of togetherness and collective life. Instead, cities resemble compartmentalised infrastructured fields interconnected by the car.

Against this scenario, this project imagines a dense city where objects, such as they exist, do not have the binary logic of figure-ground. The basic datums of this city are not space, buildings and circulation; its fabric is defined by interruptions of the previously mentioned, which comprise our desires as physical misplaced objects.

a city without objects

I cannot think of any form of fantastic art without imagining aimless, unconnected ideas scattered here and there in no order, aberrations of the mind, in short, dreams.

method statement

In order to investigate links between the individual and the forms of the city, the work brings together: analogical urbanism - the field of analogous objects; commodity capitalism - fixation on objects as commodities; environmental destructionaccelerated by commodity capitalism; dreams and the unconscious - the field of

This proposal creates a condition of tabula rasa that changes the car-centred planning of a particular area into a pedestrian environment. Even though architecture is experiencing a shift towards the periphery of necessity, there is an opportunity to bring it back into public discourse with the need to rethink our physical reality and our attitude towards it. The project critiques Dundee’s infrastructure, which takes an enormous portion of the space and, therefore, cannot be overlooked as a purely pragmatic and necessary byproduct of the city. It is an attitude that promotes rigidity and creates boundaries.

Losing it altogether in the archive... ...and re-finding it in the city as a critical project

a knowledge surface

The project proposes a network of such archives - places for society to confront issues, uncover truths and spread knowledge. It is where debates can be organised; where information - physical and digital - can be curated, stored and distributed. These infrastructural centres would make a connection between the physical and the digital. It is an attempt to show a view of the digital locale in our physical environment while using the online as a tool in a public institution to aid the freedom of speech and distribution of knowledge.

The archive brief is rooted in the belief that in order to understand and make decisions as a society, knowledge regarding our position in the world, our impact on the environment, our freedom as well as the very framework of choices where freedom is manifested, is crucial. It is a reaction to the current times of uncertainty, mistrust in public bodies and divisions in society.

Hydraulic pistons that raise the central floor are located at each side of the elevator (see plan for location). Electrical conduits and optical fibre for the level 1 platform (to the left of elevator) and the rising central floor.

hydraulic pistons - A system of hydraulic pistons (one in each wall to the side of each elevator see in plan for a more accurate location) with perpendicular splines cut into the outer part of the piston, that raise the central floor up, and transfer some of their energy to parapets that lift up automatically through a worm gear system. As the hydraulic lift goes up, it turns a worm wheel on a fixed shaft, which turns a perpendicular worm gear, to which is engaged another worm gear - raising the parapets.

The development of the masterplan has involved extensive consultation with various user groups within the School – including pupils.

Working through a series of options in a collaborative process with Historic England and the Local Planning Authority, we were in the process of developing a masterplan which included the provision of new sports facilities, - including a full size, floodlit Astro hockey pitch – new teaching spaces and dining facilities. The whole plan included a rethink and expansion of the parking on the site, and a comprehensive pedestrian circulation and wayfinding strategy, which presented the possibility of significant “heritage gains”. During my time in the practice, we also started devising a strategy to consign the old oil fired boiler systems to history, and move towards a renewable energy strategy for all the buildings.

Designscape Architects were invited to participate in a competition for a new masterplan for the Westonbirt School. The practice was then commissioned alongside Greenhalgh Landscape Architects to develop a 10 year vision document and masterplan for the future of Westonbirt Schools.

north road housing development, 2020 Bath

The new houses will replace a large bungalow, which is both unremarkable in quality and somewhat out of character with its surroundings. In contrast, the proposed development maximises the potential of the site, whilst still keeping the impact on neighbours to a minimum.

My role in the project ended with the sumbission of planning application.

The development will include three houses, which are designed to have four bedrooms over three floors, including the attic. Living accommodation is located on the ground floor, with the sitting room facing south, towards the road. The open plan kitchen connects to the garden via large sliding doors, with the garden intended to function as an external room.
