Dividing decimals

Dividing decimals by whole numbers – Context of money Rounding decimal numbers- Context of Money.

When we divide money we are dividing decimals. If we share £5.16 by 3, Example: 1 3 ) £5.16 1 3 ) £5.216 1. 7 3 ) £5.216 1. 72 3 ) £5.216

You carry the remainder 2 onto the next number as usual. When you meet the decimal point in the sum, put it up in your answer. Now carry on dividing 3 into 21 Finish off the sum and you have the answer. Does it look about right?

Have a go at dividing these sums of money. 1)

6 ) £8.40

2)

7 ) £2.24

3)

2 ) £39.84

4)

8 ) £16.56

1) 2) 3) 4)

£1.40 £0.32 £19.92 £2.07

Sometimes you might get to the end of the sum and still have a number to carry (a remainder). For example: 1 4 ) 6.22 

Start as normal

1. 5 4 ) 6.22 

We divide 22 by 4, but still have a remainder of 2

1. 5 5 4 ) 6.2220 

Add a 0 on the end and carry on as usual, until finished.

You can carry on adding 0’s for as long as you want, but usually it makes sense to ROUND OFF after 2 or 3 decimal places.

Decimal places are the numbers after the decimal point 2.3 2.35 2.358 2.3589

has 1 decimal place has 2 decimal places has 3 decimal places has 4 decimal places

Sometimes, when you have a lot of decimal numbers you have to ROUND OFF 0

We will start by rounding up money. These amounts need to be rounded off to pounds and pence. This means you do not need the 3rd decimal place … you need to round it off. £1.759 the number after the pence is a 9 - so round up to

£1.76

£1.752 the number after the pence is a 2 - so keep it at

£1.75

£11.574 the number after the pence is a 4 - so keep it at

£11.57

£11.575 the number after the pence is a 5 - so round it up to

£11.58
