Long Division A study guide for beginners
The Steps To Long Division • Divide- the number inside the house with the number outside of the house • Multiply- the number outside of the house by the number on top of the house • Subtract- the number inside the house from the number below the inside number • Check- to make sure the difference (the answer to a subtraction problem) is smaller that the number outside the house • Bring Down- the next number in the dividend to add to the ones place in your sum • Repeat- all the steps as many times as needed
1st Step- Divide • In the first step you divide the number outside the house called the divisor by the number inside the house called the dividend
12 12
144
12 goes into 144 12 times so you put 12 on top of the house.
2nd Step- Multiply • Then you multiply the divisor by the quotient the number on top of the house, also the answer to a division problem
12 12 144 -144 ___
12x12=144
3rd Step- Subtract • Next you subtract the dividend by the number underneath. The answer you get is your remainder. If the answer you get is zero the there is no remainder
12 12 144 -144 ___ 0
4th Step- Check • Check your difference to make sure it is lesser than the divisor. If it is not then you did something wrong
12 12 144 -144 ___ 0
5th Step- Bring Down • There is nothing left to bring down
12 12 144 -___ 144
6th Step- Repeat • You only use this step when you have numbers left over • In the next few slides I will show you what to do if this problem occurs
How many times does 8 go in 19? You can figure this out by multiplying. 8x1=8, 8x2=16, 8x3=24. It can go in 1 time because the answer you get afterwards is 8. And 8 can go into 19. But, sense 8x2=16 it can also go in 2 times; and you want it to go in as many times as possible with going over the number (19). So, that’s why it can’t go in 3 times because 8x3=24 and 24 is greater than 19. 24>19.
1st Step- Divide
8 can not go into 1, so it has to know go into 19
2 8
197
2nd Step- Multiply Then you multiply the divisor by the quotient
2 8
197 16
And then you get 16
3rd Step- Subtraction 2 8 Now you subtract 16 from 19
197 16 ______ 3
And then you get 3
4th Step- Check 2 3 is smaller than 8. So far we got the equation right
8
197 16 ______ 3
5th Step- Bring Down 2 8 Now you bring down the 7 in 197 and you get 37
197 16 ______ 37
6th Step- Repeat 2. Multiply 8x4=32
8 1. Divide How many time does 8 go into 37? 4
24 197 -______ 16 37 - 32 ______ 5
5. Bring Down there is nothing else to bring down so your remainder is 5
3. Subtract 37-32=5
4. Check 5 is smaller 8, so we are good 5<8
6th Step- Repeat r5
8
24 197 -______ 16 37 -______ 32 5
Final Answer: 24 r5

REVIEW!!! Steps to Long Division
Divide Divide the divisor into the dividend. How many times does it go in?
Multiply Multiply the divisor by the quotient.
Subtract Subtract the number below the dividend from the dividend.
Check Check to make sure that the answer you got is smaller that the divisor. (Sometimes this step may not be necessary.
Bring Down Bring down the next number in the dividend and add it to the sum.
Repeat Repeat all the steps if the sum you got was not zero.
