“ Ingrid has an instrument with a rich, round, warm, honeyed color, and is very much at home in a variety of styles,” says renowned AmericanCanadian Maestro Clyde Mitchell who has appeared with every major Canadian orchestra. She is widely admired for her soulful and soothing interpretations of classics. Born in Argentina and brought up in Canada, she has enchanted audiences in various countries and provinces, singing in various languages. Her passion for orchestras has seen her singing for various symphonies. One of her more recent appearances was with a private orchestra for Canadian Chinese Gold Maple International Film Festival. Her custom orchestrations were arranged by Roy Tan (Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Vatican, Beijing Olympics), as well as Ken Cormier (LiveEnt, Vancouver Arts Club), Maestro Clyde Mitchell and Devin Roth (Lego Movie, Hotel Transylvania II). PROGRAM NOTES
Vince Guaraldi (1928–1976) A Charlie Brown Christmas The comic strip Peanuts, by Charles M. Schulz, ran from 1950 until 2000 and is as familiar to audiences today as it was back then. The characters of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Snoopy and their exploits are household names to this day. This continued familiarity is chiefly the result of two things: on-going newspaper syndication of the strip, and, more important, the 1965 animated TV special, A Charlie Brown Christmas. The immediate popularity of this show was such that CBS-TV began to air it every Christmas season, and, in much the same way as films such as It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol, this quietly subversive holiday parable is now considered an indispensable component of the Christmas experience. The music for A Charlie Brown Christmas was the work of jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi and his Trio. It too has become an essential element in the Christmas holiday traditions for many families. The music consists of original compositions by Guaraldi such as Linus and Lucy, and (best known) Christmas Time is Here. However, it also features Guaraldi’s distinctive arrangements of traditional carols like O Tannenbaum and What Child is This. Guaraldi wrote the music for other Charlie Brown TV specials, as well as a feature-length movie, until his sudden death in 1976. Just as the original Charlie Brown special has influenced the Christmas traditions in many North American households, the music of the Guaraldi Trio had its effect on musical taste. The 1960s saw the beginnings of the rock era, but the laid back, West coast jazz style of Guaraldi and his group introduced a particular style of jazz to a new musical generation, and continues to do so.
Leopold Mozart (1719–1787) A Toy Symphony Who could imagine grown-ups getting into a fuss over something as charming and pleasurable as a symphony? And a Toy Symphony at that—something meant to bring delight, especially to children. Yet it happened—the grown-ups have long squabbled over just who composed this endearing and amusing orchestral piece which, in addition to the familiar strings, includes several “toys.” Until the mid-20th century, the Toy Symphony was attributed to Joseph Haydn. However, there were doubts about the authorship already in Haydn’s lifetime. These doubts gave birth to stories about the way it originated. According to one, at a large country fair, Haydn noticed a group of cheerful children making music on toy instruments. The elderly composer hurried home and by the following morning had written his symphony, in which he assigned parts to all the instruments he had seen the children with. According to another story, Haydn composed the little symphony for the children of his long-time patron, Prince Esterhazy. In fact, the Toy Symphony has nothing to do with children playing at a fair, or with the young Esterhazys. Research in the mid-20th Century discovered a manuscript that included this work as part of a larger composition—in the handwriting of Leopold Mozart, Wolfgang Mozart’s father. Although he has been characterized as a rather critical teacher and music theorist, Mozart Sr. was also a prolific composer and a significant musical presence in mid-18th Century Salzburg. Moreover, far from being stern and humourless, it seems Leopold was fond of musical “jokes”, and of naturalistic

effects created by non-standard instruments. In the Toy Symphony he gives the melodic material to the strings, and features a toy trumpet, toy drum, a triangle, a rattle and water-filled toy pipes to imitate the cuckoo, the nightingale and the quail. He uses these devices with a great sense of humour to create the three movements of his little symphony. The last is repeated three times with increasing speed. Fortunately, we adults don’t need to argue any longer about who wrote this imaginative little work—we can simply sit back and enjoy!
The Strauss Family
A family of 19th century Viennese composers and orchestra conductors famous for raising the standards of ballroom music to exceptional heights. The waltz they particularly developed to a level which has seldom been equalled. The founder of this musical dynasty was Johann Sr. Of his six sons, three became musicians. Johann Jr. was the most talented of them as a composer and orchestra leader, at times in open competition with his father. His waltzes such as the Blue Danube and Tales from the Vienna Woods are performed almost as frequently in the concert hall as they are in the ballroom.
Johann Strauss Jr. (1825–1899) Pizzicato Polka (1869) The polka is a couple-dance in 2/4 meter and seems to have begun life in Bohemia in the early 1800’s. It became popular first in Prague in the 1830’s and quickly spread to Vienna. By the 1840’s it had become the favourite dance in Paris. Johann Jr. composed the Pizzicato-Polka in 1869 with his brother Josef for one of his orchestra’s several visits to Russia. The polka was published in Vienna the next year and became very popular, especially in Italy, where Strauss included it on the program of every one of his tours. As the title Pizzicato suggests, the entire piece is scored for plucked strings, although a delicate glockenspiel appears in the first half of the central section. In this arrangement by Clark McAlister, we find the woodwind and brass also joining in to create even more enjoyment. The dance consists of four melodies, and perhaps to compensate for the limited instrumentation, Strauss provides subtle contrasts between them, such as in their rhythm and shape.
Johann Strauss Sr. (1804–1849) Radetzky March (1848) If you think you have heard this piece of music before it’s because you very likely have. It was originally composed to commemorate Field Marshall Radetzky’s victory at the Battle of Custoza. Its character is celebratory rather than military, and that has made it popular as a piece for marching bands everywhere, including sports events, and even advertising jingles. In Austria it has at times achieved status as an unofficial national anthem. Strauss Sr. himself had used the main tune in an earlier piece, and the melody from the march’s trio section was a folk tune already popular among Radetzsky’s victorious soldiers. There is a long-standing performance tradition attached to the chorus melody—that the audience is invited to clap along with the first iteration of the melody, and clap with much greater vigour when the chorus is repeated! We hope you will participate in today’s concert by doing just that.

Joy To The World Joy to the world! The Lord is come; Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And heav’n and nature sing, And heav’n and nature sing, And heav’n and heav’n and nature sing. Joy to the world! The savior reigns; Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rock,s hills and plains, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy. He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove, The glories of his righteousness, And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders of His love. O Come All Ye Faithful O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem. Come and behold Him, Born the King of Angels; O come let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. Sing, choirs of Angels, Sing in exultation, O sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above. Glory to God, In the highest, glory; O come let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. O Little Town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see the lie; Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth The ever lasting Light: The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight. For Christ is born of Mary; And gathered all above; While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch on wond’ring love. O morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth; And praises sing to God the King, And peace to men on earth.
