Message from the Executive Director
Stepping into the role of Executive Director of the Kamloops Symphony in June 2019 has been a significant personal privilege. On the personal front, this year has been full of challenge and growth: trying to balance my new life here in Kamloops, while getting accustomed to the role and all the responsibilities that came with it. And of course, just as I thought I might be settling into the role, the year ended how none of us predicted.
After a summer of working away in the office, it was a joy to finally hear the Symphony perform in September 2019 and each concert since has featured incredible moments that I will cherish. Personal highlights of my year include travelling up to 100 Mile & 108 Mile House with our musicians for our Conducting 101 Workshop, getting to know our patrons and volunteers who so passionately support the orchestra, and exploring the orchestra’s place in our local cultural fabric.

On the administrative front, I was not the only new addition to the team. This year we were able to hire a new Office Administrator, Sue Adams, and a new Production Manager, Adrien Fillion, both who have brought new perspectives and expertise to our operations. Complimenting the rest of the administrative team are Ryan Noakes, Olivia Martin, Sally Arai and of course Dina Gilbert who make sure all the pieces of the puzzle fall in place behind the scenes. We also thank long-time supporter of the Symphony, Judy Wiebe, for her services as our contracted accountant, who was able to pass on the reins at the end of December 2019. And of course, I must acknowledge the Board of Directors who govern the Organization.
Internally, we also made several steps to strengthen the organization, further enhancing our brand as a professional orchestra. We began the process of standardizing our visual identity, by establishing a consistent look to our documents and branding. We also made technological improvements to our office systems, which became particularly useful during a shut-down of the office in March of 2020.
In terms of fund development, this was a year for us to renew our relationships with supporters and remind ourselves why they choose to support the Symphony. We were particularly proud of the fundraising initiatives that took place this year, with a record-breaking Barb’s Used Book & Music Sale, and very fruitful Mayor’s Gala for the Arts (both economically, and in terms of fun!).
Although we may not have been able to finish our season as originally planned, there were plenty of steps taken that have further strengthened our organization, and we are so grateful for the community support that has kept us relevant and active in the unexpected downtime we experienced at the end of the year. We are set up well for the experimental year to come, and I feel honoured to help get the orchestra through this next transitionary phase of operations.
Sincerely,
Daniel Mills Executive Director Kamloops Symphony
