KAMLOOPS SYMPHONY 2023/24 SEASON
Welcome to our 2023–2024 season!
With great pleasure, I invite you to discover our 2023/24 Season, one that features local and international artists and celebrates tradition—and innovation— in symphonic music. Rich and diverse, our programming this season highlights beloved works by Mahler, Mozart, and Ravel, and gives you the opportunity to hear many exciting pieces for the first time in Kamloops. You’ll be at the edge of your seat with some of the most riveting American music, such as Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, and immersed in the tragic love story of Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet. Your young ones will even have a chance to discover the KSO with a special Family Concert, the Canadian premiere of author Dan Brown’s Wild Symphony.
Celebrate the festive season with Christmas with the KSO, then come on a Hypnotic Journey with a multisensory experience featuring the music of Julie Thériault. We will then bewitch you with music from the Red Violin, and Light the Night will carry you into Alma Mahler’s world through projected illustrations, in a symphonic graphic novel. You’ll also get to hear a different side of your orchestra when we perform the music of Pink Floyd with Jeans n’ Classics, mash up expressions of struggle, mourning, and hope for the future when Mozart Meets Margit Sky, and share the stage with versatile Juno Award winner Jeremy Dutcher.
From celebrating the 100th birthday of the Kamloopsborn “Dean of Canadian Jazz” Phil Nimmons, to sharing the stage with our very own KSO Chorus, we will also collaborate with stellar artists from our region, including Rachel Casponi, Heidi Muendel, Martin Krátký, and Margit Sky Project.
We can’t wait for you to join us for this exciting season!
DINA GILBERT Music Director

Filled with all the drama and humanity of his stage masterpieces, Mozart’s Requiem, his monumental final work, grapples with the mystery of death in the same way his operas grapple with the beauty and complexity of being alive. This magnificent masterpiece is paired with songs by local folk-rock duo, Margit Sky Project, expressing similar concepts of struggle, mourning a loss, and a sense of hope for the future.

New to the Symphony?
We get it. To outsiders, classical music can seem like a strange ancient ritual, something only enjoyed as a member of a secret organization. But we don’t want it to be. The two most asked questions people have before attending their first classical music concert are:
What should I wear?
First and foremost, you should be comfortable. We don’t have a dress code, so wear what feels right for you. If you love a good excuse to dress to the nines, go for it. Or if you would prefer to keep it more casual, you won’t be the only one dressed down. We’re happy to have you join us and hope that you have a wonderful concert experience; your concert attire doesn’t matter.
When should I clap?
Audiences used to be rowdier at classical concerts, and then around the 20th Century the “new normal” became to wait until a piece was finished before applauding. The problem is not everyone knows about this unwritten rule. Generally, if a piece has multiple movements (think different chapters in a book) most people now wait until they are completed before applauding. That said, if you feel moved to applaud before one of these “allowed” times, feel free to do so. Nobody on the stage is going to glare at you or try to make you feel bad. They’re probably going to be quite pleased to hear that you are enjoying the performance
We can’t wait to welcome you soon. For more commonly asked questions, go to kamloopssymphony.com/symphony101.htm
