Annual Report

2021–2022

The Kamloops Symphony engages, enriches, educates, and inspires through the power of music… even when faced with continued adversity.

Following a year of major disruption, the 2021–22 Season presented a whole new set of opportunities and challenges for the Kamloops Symphony.

After a Season without in-person audiences, we were thrilled to welcome back our patrons to the Sagebrush Theatre and Oasis Church for a full season of programming. We commissioned works by local composers for our first familycentred concert in years, presented dazzling guest artists, and—although it took us a little longer to get there than planned—we made our triumphant return to Salmon Arm. All the while, our Music School set record enrollment. But evidently, this year was anything but straightforward, with challenges around every corner.

COVID-related complications caused the cancellation of one programme, and the rescheduling of another—although in both cases we are proud to say all our orchestral musicians were paid regardless. Natural disasters caused further challenges and evolving circumstances on all fronts meant acting quickly to change our plans.

There was no production this year that did not involve some sort of major disruption. But we made it through, while simultaneously achieving our mandate and sustaining our organization. This was made possible with the support of all of you—our community.

So from all of us at the Kamloops Symphony, thank you.

Message from the President

I want to share some of my reflections with you about my first year as Board President of the Kamloops Symphony. As a newcomer to the greater Kamloops region and to the Symphony, I certainly had a steep learning curve as I accepted the role of Board President during a pivotal period in our evolution. It is indeed an honour to be part of such a significant component of the cultural scene of our community and region. Founded in 1976 as a local community orchestra, we continue our exciting journey to transform ourselves into a pre-eminent professional orchestra, one that seeks to enrich our lives, engage our audiences, and educate our community members through the power of music.

The single word that comes to my mind the most is pride—pride in our consistently engaging musical performances that continue to push artistic boundaries, pride in the imagination and resolve with which we confronted and navigated the challenges presented by a pandemic, and pride, above all, in the highly passionate team that helps us deliver on the promises we make to all of our stakeholders: our audiences, our donors and sponsors, our musicians and staff.

The 2021–22 Season marked our gradual return to live performances while still adhering to evolving health protocols. We presented a program that was diverse and innovative; our performances were evocative, even stunning. Our audiences, after the many months of isolation imposed by COVID, were excited and joyful to be “live” again rather than online, glad to be sharing collective sensory experiences.

To those audiences, our subscribers and attendees, I want to express our sincere appreciation for their patience and loyalty during those challenging times. To our staff, to our amazing musicians, and in particular to our leaders, Dina and Daniel, I wish to express my gratitude, as well as to my fellow Board members for their commitment

Kamloops Symphony Society | 2 | Annual Report 2021–2022

and support. I also want to give a special shout-out to three outstanding Board members who retired from the KSO, Claire-Ann Brodie, Maureen McCurdy, and Miki Andrejević for their significant contributions. We remain deeply indebted to them.

This season also saw us deal with additional challenges in the form of wildfires and flooding which tested our ability and resourcefulness to overcome the impact on musician travel. Our Executive Director, Daniel, took the proverbial “bull by the horns” and made the seemingly impossible happen. I also want to acknowledge the courage and strength exhibited by our Music Director Dina Gilbert as she confronted her own health challenges. We are thrilled she is back with us and look forward to continued collaboration.

We came through the year on a solid financial footing. I want to give a special thank you to our government funders—particularly the BC Arts Council and the City of Kamloops—as well as our sponsors, donors and volunteers. In summary, I am pleased to report that the Kamloops Symphony is alive and well and incredibly resilient. However, the best is yet to come. Our focus is squarely on the future as we continue to pursue bold dreams for the KSO. In four short years, we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary and plan to push the artistic envelope further in terms of innovative performances, unique collaborations and greater audience engagement.

Message from the Music Director

The 2021–2022 Season of the Kamloops Symphony brought several challenges our way, but with our experience navigating uncertainty, we managed to keep our promise of delivering vibrant performances to our audiences.

Proudly local

Over the Season, we reinforced our desire to feature the talents from our community. From opening our concert season with Salmon Arm pianist Jaeden Izik-Dzurko to inviting soprano Rachel Casponi, we were proud to share the stage with such high-quality local artists. In addition, several music-lovers from Kamloops joined the KSO Chorus under Tomas Bijok’s leadership to participate in two concerts: Christmas with the KSO and Luminous Voices.

Nurturing the talent of emerging Canadian composers One of our important projects this year was The Wild Orchestra, a family-centred concert initiative. This concert featured the dynamic Secwepemc storyteller Chris Bose sharing the story of How the coyote fed his family, over Kevin Mulligan’s commissioned musical soundtrack. Audiences also enjoyed an overture by composer Ryan Noakes played over sounds of nature recorded from Riverside Park, and unique illustrations created by visual artist Susan Mark were projected on a screen to accompany Poulenc’s Babar the Elephant. This concert illustrated once more the incredible talent we have in Kamloops.

Creating music experiences for all Because we firmly believe that music is for everyone to enjoy, we continued the curation of different types of concerts to appeal to our numerous audiences. Although we had to reschedule the concert due to COVID, we were excited to present a pop concert with Cree artist iskwē who captivated the public with her voice, her engaging texts, and stage presence. In addition to presenting masterworks such as Mahler’s Symphony No.4 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 the orchestra also performed works by outstanding composers of today: French composer Camille Pépin and Sri-Lankan-born Canadian composer Dinuk Wijeratne. For the latter, tabla specialist Gabriel Dionne came all the way from Rimouski, Québec to perform the Concerto for tabla

Kamloops Symphony Society | 4 | Annual Report 2021–2022

which brilliantly combined the sound of this North Indian percussion instrument with the orchestra.

Digital and in-person experiences

After the uncertainty of the 2020–21 season, we slowly got back into announcing blocks of concerts at a time in 2021–22 and reintroduced live audiences. In addition to having some of our main concerts available online, The Wild Orchestra was also digitally offered for free to students in School District No. 73 as an alternative to our usual educational concerts presented at the Sagebrush Theatre.

We also continued our KSO Front Row Series, which gave our audience an opportunity to learn more about our Principal Musicians, as well as to present a conversation with our guest Gabriel Dionne and his tabla mentor Ojas Adhiya.

Agility and compassion through challenges

Finally, on a personal note, I will remember this year as a most challenging one as I had to step-down from conducting several KSO concerts to undergo cancer treatments, and get to the recovery state for which I am grateful today! In addition to special guest conductors Nadège Foofat, Cossette Justo Valdés, Bruce Dunn, and Bradley Thachuk who brilliantly conducted these performances, I would like to thank everyone from the KSO and from the community for their incredible support in such difficult moments.

Of course, this season wouldn’t have been possible without the talent, the sustained hard work, and the agility of our musicians, our team, and our board through the various circumstances of this challenging season. Thank you all for your contribution to the Kamloops Symphony.

Kamloops Symphony Society | 5 | Annual Report 2021–2022

Message from the Executive Director

Many of us thought the first year of the pandemic was tough, but little did we know of the operational challenges that faced us in our 2021–22 Season. However, despite everything our organization made it through, and still managed to achieve great things. Although we were thrilled to welcome back audiences with the introduction of vaccines, health and safety became even more crucial to our operations, as we face continued variations to restrictions, and vaccination mandates. These conditions affected every area of our programming, and we began to see the direct and real effects of the virus operationally, but more critically on our people, our community and us as individuals. If COVID was not enough to contend with, unexpected challenges such as the flooding in November 2021 and unrelated illness also disrupted us in major ways.

Despite the various roadblocks placed in our way, the Kamloops Symphony very much persevered, while also achieving our mandate of providing musical experiences for the community.

After over two years, we ultimately concluded our Season with over forty musicians on stage and the Kamloops Symphony Music School continued strong, setting a record level of enrollment for its 20-year history with over 300 registered students. We were also thrilled to be able to go back to a much more “standard” version of Barb’s Used Book

Kamloops Symphony Society | 6 | Annual Report 2021–2022

and Music Sale, and a very successful spring raffle helped us achieve sustainability.

In 2021–22, we also welcomed two new valuable individuals to our team. First, Sam Bregoliss, our new Operations Coordinator, was key to advancing our productions and increasing the professionalism of our operations. And we are also very grateful for our new Board President, John McDonald, who has been a champion at advancing the governance of our organization and has served as a great personal ally throughout our complicated year. Of course, I also want to thank the rest of the administrative team and board of the Kamloops Symphony for remaining flexible and nimble as we enacted and communicated changes throughout the Season.

And one last thank you to everyone in our community who continued to support us along our journey.

Concert Experiences

MAIN SERIES

Over our 2021–2022 Season, the Orchestra showcased many genres and styles and was joined by a diverse range of guest artists. Although the start of the season saw limited in-person capacity, necessitating a hybrid in-person and online viewing experience and a smaller orchestra, by the end of the Season we returned to a full-sized 45-person orchestra on stage with full audience capacity. Ultimately, we were able to present nine full concert programmes over 16 performances, which included a return of the orchestra to Salmon Arm, after over two years.

of the Silence

Out of the Silence included a variety of captivating and compelling works. Audience-favourite pianist Jaeden Izik-Dzurko from Salmon Arm was joined by KSO Principal Trumpet Mark D’Angelo for the moody and mischievous Concerto for Piano and Trumpet by Dmitri Shostakovich. Audiences were invited to join us for one three performances and celebrate the return of live music.

Utilizing a web-based live streaming studio, Dina Gilbert was joined by special guests in live-streamed conversations. Presentations included conversations with KSO musicians Elyse Jacobson, Boris Ulanowicz, Sally Arai, Sam McNally, Ashley Kroecher, and Martin Kratky, as well as a Tabla 101 session with guest artist Gabriel Dionne and his mentor, Ojas Adhiya.

KSO CHORUS

After a year hiatus, we were thrilled to start up the Kamloops Symphony Chorus with regular rehearsals. Under the direction of Chorus Master Tomas Bijok, over fifty amateur singers from the community rehearsed weekly, to ultimately perform in two concerts with our professional musicians: Christmas with the KSO in December 2021, and Luminous Voices in April 2022. As we have done in years passed, the Kamloops Symphony was pleased to offer participation in the chorus free of charge.

KMC GRAPHIC SCORE WORKSHOP

We worked with the Kamloops Music Collective (KMC) to present a unique experience where students worked on graphic scores and had musicians from the orchestra perform their compositions in a fun and informal setting.

THE WILD ORCHESTRA —EDUCATIONAL PROJECT

Following the live and streamed presentations of The Wild Orchestra, featuring two new world premieres by Kamloops-born composers, along with Secwepemc storyteller Chris Bose and illustrations by Susan Mark (see page 13 for full concert details), we reedited the digital version of the concert specifically for school students.

Thanks to the support of the City of Kamloops and the SOCAN Foundation, Susan Mark also created a teacher and a student guide to accompany the performance. The guide contained several crosscurriculum activites for students, including those based in language arts (English, French, Secwepemctsin), music, visual art, social studies and science. Ultimately, the concert and educational guide was distributed for free to students within School District No. 73, with hundreds of them gaining access to the project.

Kamloops Symphony Music School

Although other parts of our operations faced major disruption, we were thrilled to have record-breaking year with the Kamloops Symphony Music School. In 2021–22, we provided lessons and group classes for over 300 students, and provide over 3,500 hours of music instruction. We were also proud to provide administrative support for 10 recitals that took place throughout the year. We also welcomed Nicholas Dyson, on trumpet, to take over KSMS Faculty Member Bruce Dunn’s students mid-way through the school year.

In 2021–22, we were able to award three scholarships from the Peter Collins Memorial Fund for students pursuing post-secondary education in Music. We were proud to announce Eilidh Nicoll, Lucas OlsenWillford and Anastasia Wasylinko as the winners of the award, as part of an end-of-year recital that took place in June 2022.

Fundraising & Community Support

Despite the operational challenges, our fundraising efforts remained strong in our 2021–22 Season. We raised over $90,000 in receipted donations through our regular philanthropic campaigns, and vastly exceeded targets.

BARB’S USED BOOK & MUSIC SALE

Following our modified versions in the year prior, Barb’s Used Book & Music Sale, our beloved fundraiser, returned to normal scale, with a full two-week run for both the fall sale in November 2021 and the spring sale in May of 2022. New this season was the introduction of an exclusive early access event the night before the official opening of the sale, giving ticket holders first access at the books, CDs DVDs, vinyl records, and sheet music. Following the May sale, we had a “Blow Out Sale” which helped us to significantly reduce stock to help us put everything into storage which was highly successful. Ultimately, we brought in over $67,500 in revenues in 2021–22.

SPRING 2022 RAFFLE

Entitled Mountain Getaways and Indulgent Stays, we went digital with a raffle that ran March 7–June 15. Thanks to some wonderful community support, the raffle featured five donated prizes: A weekend getaway in Banff from the Banff Jasper Collection, an indulgent weekend at Sparkling Hills Resort, two $250 gift certificates to Fisherman’s Market, and a Dinner & Concert package with two tickets to any Kamloops Symphony performance in the 2022–23 Season paired with a gift certificate to Mittz Kitchen.

The raffle was run through Raffle Nexus, an online service for raffles and 50/50 draws helping non-profit and charitable organizations of all types and sizes, which proved to be very successful, ultimately garnering over $6,900 in ticket sales.

Financial Position

The Society held a strong financial position with cash of $326,000 and net assets of $165,000 at June 30, 2022.

The re-introduction of live audiences in 2021–22 made ticket sales a much more significant source or revenue as compared to prior year. Emergency government funding, although less substantial than in the prior year, also helped close the gap, along with the use of previously restricted funds that had been allocated for use in 2021–22. At year end, the decision was made to internally restrict $42,000 of unexpected emergency funding for a future Season, acknowledging that a transition to regular ticketing revenues was still underway.
