wenty-seven years — and we are still going strong. Welcome to the 27th annual Hot Nite in The City show and shine and poker run. After the last couple of years, it is nice to be able to enjoy what we all love: Cars and the friendships they bring. This year, we already have a record number of pre-registered vehicles from every decade of the automobile. There will be muscle cars, street rods, electric cars, tuners, transports, motorcycles and everything in between. Thank you to the owners, who showcase their vehicles with us. Every year, countless hours are put into the event by a group of dedicated volunteers. These volunteers have a hand in every part of the show, from setting up (beginning at 4 a.m.) the barricades and laying out the sponsor locations to parking show cars and judging multiple vehicle classes.
A huge thank you must go out to each and every volunteer. An event of this size also would not be possible without a multitude of sponsors. Without their help, the trophies, show cards, dash plaques, sound stage and every other part of the show would be non-existent. To the spectators, who come to enjoy the show, thank you for your incredible ongoing support. Please remember to be careful around the vehicles. Please leave your dogs at home because they really do not care about looking at cars and the heat may get to them. Lastly, thank you to the City of Kamloops, providing the cityscape for our incredible event all these years later.

CELEBRATING 27 YEARS! I
t is hard to believe Hot Nite in the City is celebrating 27 years. Being born and raised in Kamloops, and being a car guy, I have always had a passion for old muscle cars in my blood. From 1983 to 1985, while attending NorKam high school, I always had cars on my mind — but especially old Mustangs. My first car was a 1964 ½ Mustang coupe, with a 260-cu engine. I purchased it for $900 from the original owner in Sahali. Not knowing the serial number sequencing, this was very rare and early numbers cars from dearbon Ford and today would be worth significant value. In shop class at NorKam, I was able to rebuild the engine, transmission and some of the suspension parts and later it was painted to show-quality condition. It was my daily driver and never let me down when I moved to Vancouver to attend the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Unfortunately, I made the bad decision to sell the car in 1988, due to long commutes to my new job. The Mustang was not the most practical car for daily trips. I went without a Mustang for quite a few years. However, in 2000, I reentered the Mustang classic car world and purchased a black and red 1965
fully loaded convertible, which I owned for 20 years and recently sold. That car was frequently displayed at Hot Nite between 2005 and 2019 and won best in the show in 2006. I have since made more Mustang investments. In 2007, I purchased a 1965 two plus two black and red Fastback four-speed rare optioned car, which I still own. In 2020, I also purchased a fully loaded — and restored to concourse level — 1967 GT Green Fastback four-speed, which I displayed last year at Hot Nite in the City. Both the two Fastbacks were purchased locally from B.C. original ownership, so I am extremely fortunate to own these beauties. Living in Vancouver now, it is always great to come back to Kamloops in August. The weather is great, I get to see my family, friends and car buddies and enjoy a great weekend. It is the simple things in life that mean the most — and these old classic cars bring back days when life was slower and more enjoyable. Please support this wonderful hobby and car show. Ron and his team of volunteers have done an amazing job over the past 27 years and deserve your support.

Don Campbell In Memory of
G
rowing up in the General Motors community of Oshawa Ontario, the late Don Campbell became obsessed with cars at a young age. From competitive model building to soap box derbys, his passion and attention to detail lead him into many early projects. In his teenage years, he worked at a machine shop, where he put his understanding of mechanics to use and built his first engine. In his early 20s, Don moved to Kamloops and started an automotive business. He would go on to have a very successful, 35year career as a business owner and employer in Kamloops. A testament to his success were the many friendships he forged in the local car scene and community. He was an active participant and organizer in local charitable show and shine events, loved his rod runs and even smoked his tires at the old-time drags in Ashcroft. Don had several hot rods and classic cars over the years. A few notables included: a ‘56 Chevrolet coupe, a ‘65 Plymouth Barracuda, an ‘82 El Camino and, his two favourites, his 1938 Ford sedan that he built from the ground up (with help) and recently, a 1956 Pontiac. In the last year of Don’s life, he decided to transform the 1956 Pontiac into a Classic Cruiser. Unfortunately, he never got to fulfill that dream. Rising to the occasion, Don’s good buddy Mike Keating took on his vision and, with many hours of labour and love, he finished the car just the way Don would have. On June 11, 2021, Don Campbell took his last ride along with his wife of 44 years, Yolande, and his two children, Kale and Jolene. A true hot rodder, he cruised in his 1938 Ford (with the windows down and Beach Boys blaring) arriving at Kamloops hospice in style. Don passed away the next day. He was a car enthusiast right to the very end. Some of his last words were: “Keep it under 80!”

y name is Wayne Kulcheski. I am 69 years old and have been a car guy since I was 15. I retired to Campbell River 15 years ago. At age 15, I worked and lived in North Vancouver while living at home. My two cousins were twice my age and had a Chevron. They built and restored cars. My love of cars started from them. I was their detail guy and parts washer. At age 16, I bought a 1965 Ford Fairlane Sports Coupe. At age 17, I traded it for a 1967 Beaumont 396-350 HP, four-speed, black with buckets and a red interior. By age 20, I was building and restoring muscle cars. After several builds, I would take these cars to car shows and started winning awards. It has always been about the chase for me and what I could turn the finished car into. Fifteen years ago, I got into newer corvettes and, every two to three years, I would
sell and buy newer and more option Corvettes. I also stayed building muscle cars. Today, I own a 2013 Corvette Grand Sport ,which is a wide body car. I bought this car last fall from Vancouver off a fellow in the BCCC club. The car is a fully loaded LS3, six-speed auto, with a top speed of 300 kilometres per hour. The car has 24,000 kilometres. I will be at the show and shine with the car. Next year, I will bring my 1934 Ford, threewindow coupe= street rod, which I have been completing over the last 5 years.

1940 NASH HOT ROD COUPE
I
Tony & Lou Sloboda
could tell you I won it gambling at the poker table but, in fact, my wife Lou had a dream one night about our friend Bill who owned the Nash. We previously owned two other Nashs, 1939 each, sedan models with suicide doors. They were great when the kids came home for a visit and we would cruise with the family. Now that they are all grown up and seem to not hang out with us old folks, we decided to sell our last ‘39 Nash two years ago. We wanted a coupe. One night, Lou had a dream we went to see Bill and he sold us our present 40 Nash Coupe. A phone call and a visit and some wheeling and dealing and, bingo! We bought the Nash. Lou likes to tease Bill everyt ime she sees him and tells him, “I dreamt about you last night.” When we purchased the Nash, it needed completing. Tony installed the running boards and Lou did most of the
interior, except for the headliner. We purchased the seats online. Coincidentally, the seats are from the Flight Motion Simulator “DreamFlyer,” which is a creation by Doc Holloway, a good friend of ours. Finishing touches and a bit of mechanical adjustments — and the Nash is our latest favorite ride.
1957 CHEVROLET
I
Dana Hall
always wanted a ‘57 Chevy twodoor post and, when I found this original paint four-door, I knew it was the one. I took this car to my friend Frank’s place and, over a period of a month and a half, the conversion was done, the body was pulled off the frame and everything was painted and detailed. Many long days and weekends paid off.

y name is Jarod Whitrick. I am 22 and here is my 2016 genesis coupe 3.8 R-Spec. I have always been interested in cars, since I was little. My dad would take me to shows all the time with his suped up, early 2000s Fast and Furious styled car. I have always wanted to get a hold of something different and be able to put it in a show, doing my research on performance and what looks tasteful to the eye. So far, I have after-market tails, areo blitz splitters with front lip, wider wheels and tires. Pretty soon, EBC brakes and rotors will go with its Brembo calipers. I have also added a cold air — you have got to have it — Ark performance down pipes and test pipes, Solo performance high flow dual exhaust and colder plugs. In the future, with big hopes, I plan on getting a M&S high-flow front grill, A VIS style carbon fiber hood, custom blacked out headlights, with a bronze highlight to
match the rims and short throw shifter from coolerworx. Last, but not least for big dreams: a precision 6266 turbo kit along, with a stage three clutch upgrade to handle to 500+whp. If not a turbo, a tune by Alphaspeed Midwest that specializes in these cars. Excited for the show!

1925 WILLYS OVERLAND Gordon & Samantha Moyer This car was built in Toronto, then put on a train to Ashcroft. The first owner picked the car up from the train and took it to his farm, where he put a wooden box on the back of the car. The box was put on so he could haul potatoes he grew. In 2001, the first owner sold the car to the second owner, who put the car into storage in his yard in Lillooet. In 2003, Gordon — the third owner — purchased the car. Gordon took the car home to Cache Creek. When Gordon got the car, it was still in running condition. The only maintenance he had to do was clean some of the parts and replace the distributor. Gordon ran the car for two years, when the engine started to have a knock. He then took the car apart and had the engine rebuilt, Babbitt bearings and all. He then put the engine back in and has since taken
the car to many car shows, weddings and family events over the years. The furthest Gordon has taken the car for a show is to Lethbridge. In 2022, Gordon is working on transferring ownership of the car to his daughter, Samantha. Samantha is slowly learning all the maintenance and care required to keep the car running. Even though the car is 97 years old, it still runs to this day and, with a little maintenance and kind care, it will hopefully continue to run for many more years.

eep MB298644 was built in Toledo Ohio in January 1944 for use in the Second World War. It was shipped to England for assembly. It was then sent to Europe and landed at Omaha Beach in July 1944. It spent time in Northern France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Sgt. Bakeman bought the Jeep after the war, while still being posted to Europe, for $40 in early 1946.MB298644 was retired from active service and given civilian plates in November 1948. When Mr. Bakeman returned to the U.S., he brought the jeep with him. Then was
sold in 1958 and lost track of until the Larsons of Bend Oregon bought it at auction in 2000. I bought the Jeep from the Larson family on Sept 3, 2005. I brought he Jeep home to Kamloops for a complete restoration.
1969 CAMARO Kevin Sassa In 2006, I bought the car in Ottawa, where it was a barn find. The previous owner did a great job cleaning it up and saving the good bones of the car. Once I had it shipped home to me in Lethbridge, I slowly began to turn it into my dream car. After 16 years, all that remains is a full upgrade of the front end and brakes. I began the process in 2007 with an engine replacement and decided to go with AMS Engines in Edmonton. They did an amazing job building me a solid 400-cubic inch small block Chevy engine. Even with older style 23-degree heads, we still managed 625 horsepower and just over 500 ft. lbs. of torque. A few years later, I ordered an ATI transmission and converter from Ohio, which matches beautifully the high revving engine. After a bit of a break from car to raise my two kids, I went into the interior
and installed a plethora of Autometer gauges and TCI shifter with trans brake/ line loc buttons. Only a little attention was required, as the previous owner did a great job of keeping the interior period correct. A few years ago, I installed a full Moser nine-inch rear differential, with a spool, 4:56 gears and rear disk brakes. The latest investment was a full repaint, maintaining the hugger orange and white rally stripes. It was a two-year project that was completed this spring. The icing on the cake was an upgrade from the Weld Wheels, which were period correct, to the current Billet Specialties forged wheels and Mickey Thompson tires.

had been looking for a 1956 Peacock Blue T Bird for many years and happened to find one on the Hemmings Car List. In 2012, we were heading to Powell River from 100 Mile House for our friend’s retirement party and happened to pull up the Hemmings website to take a quick look to see what was on sale. A 1956 popped up as a new listing, peacock blue, 6,000 original miles and exactly what I was looking for. It just happened to be located in Powell River. On the drive down, we made a phone call to the owner and asked if it was ok to take a look at it. He was the second owner and bought the car in early 2000
from a fellow who lived in California. The original owner was in the military and had it stored for more than 30 years and then, upon return, drove it sparingly. The second owner from Powell River drove it so rarely people in Powell River did not know it even existed. On that day, we did a test drive, fell in love with it, purchased it and drove it back up to 100 Mile within a few days. We have enjoyed it ever since.

ur 2003 Ford Mustang Mach 1 was purchased new on Sept. 23, 2003 from South Coast Ford in Sechelt. We fell in love with the car the first time we saw it on the dealer’s lot, and we decided we just had to have it. It reminded us of the original Mach 1’s from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. We have had numerous pre-owned cars over the years, but this was our very first brand new vehicle. We do not use the car as a daily driver and it is garage stored during winter. We thoroughly enjoy going out for rides in our car. It is our way to relax, have fun and get away from the hustle and bustle of life. The Mach 1 was a limited run in 2003 to pay homage to the original Mach 1’s from 30 years ago. Only
