Gaglardis will go to trial in June By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
Three days have been set aside in June to deal with six charges against Tom Gaglardi and his father, Robert, and one charge against the Gaglardi family business, Northland Properties Corporation. The charges stem from an incident last year on lakefront property Tom Gaglardi owns in Savona, where the Crown alleges the pair and their company contravened federal legislation by “first clearing and then filling land, actions that resulted in the harmful alternation, disruption or destruction of fish habitat, the foreshore of Kamloops Lake.”
In a pre-trial conference at the Kamloops Law Courts on Monday, April 8, lawyer Rob Bruneau, who is representing the Gaglardis and their company, said he expects to call five defence witnesses. Crown counsel D.R. Kier said he has six witnesses planned, including two experts — a surveyor and a biologist. Kier said he will require a DVD player to show before and after video of a helicopter site related to the charges. The charges were laid on April 10, 2012. The property is located east of the entry to the Savona Aspen Planers panel plant and is roughly the size of two city lots. The Thompson-
Nicola Regional District issued a stop-work order on construction in 2011. Tom Gaglardi is majority owner of the Kamloops Blazers and bought the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League in November 2011. Northland is now building the new Sandman Signature Hotel on Lorne Street across from Riverside Park. A second pre-trial conference is scheduled for May 13 at 9:30 a.m. Meanwhile, the Gaglardis are also being sued by the strata of a residential development the family built in Revelstoke, beginning in 2007. They may have finished second to the Kelowna Rockets in the Western Hockey League B.C. Division regular season, but the Kamloops Blazers are winning the games that truly count. After eliminating the Victoria Royals in six games in the opening round of the playoffs, Kamloops travelled to Kelowna on the weekend for the first two games of the second-round bestof-seven battle. The Blazers won both games — a 5-1 victory on Sunday, April 7, and a 4-2 triumph on Saturday, April 6. The two teams are back in action at Interior Savings Centre tonight (April 9) and tomorrow for 7 p.m. starts.

Driver pleads guilty, to be sentenced in September By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
Sentencing for Merle Peter Michels, who pleaded guilty on Monday, April 8, to driving without due care and attention, will take place in September. Michels’ lawyer, Rob Bruneau, entered the plea on his client’s behalf in Kamloops Law Courts. A hearing is scheduled for April 18 to determine a specific September date for sentencing. Bruneau told the court Michels’ family is trying to move him to a residential-care home. The 85-year-old
was charged after he ran a red light at the intersection and hit Chloe Jasmine Demers — also known as Chloe Ardiles — on Sept. 9, 2012, as she crossed Tranquille Road at Leigh Road in a crosswalk area. Her injuries were life-threatening and she spent several weeks in a medically induced coma. Demers’ father, Christian Ardiles, has filed a lawsuit on her behalf seeking an unspecified amount of damages for loss of income, loss of earning capacity, future care costs and general damages. In the suit, Ardiles
take proper care to avoid an accident, did not move in time to avoid an accident, walked into the path of the vehicle “so close it is impracticable for the driver to yield the right of way, failed to yield the right of way to the vehicle, did not follow traffic-control signals at the intersection and entered the roadway when
states his daughter suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, a broken tibia and fibula, multiple lacerations, abrasions and bruises to her entire body, a blown pupil and an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury to her left knee. Michels has filed a response disputing Ardiles’ claims, stating Demers did not pay attention, did not
the word “wait, the words “don’t wal or an outline of a raised hand were being shown on the traffic signal. Michels’ response also alleges Demers impaired her ability to hear traffic by wearing headphones or ear bugs and alleges Demers “has failed to follow medical advice in respect to treatment or exercise.

SOS: Save our Steam Engine By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
SOS is a distress signal everyone knows and it’s usually associated with old-timey boats in trouble on choppy seas. Now, an old-timey train in Kamloops is borrowing the familiar Morse-code adoption in an attempt to get back on track. The Kamloops Heritage Railway Society, at a board meeting on Sunday, April 7, put together a fundraising plan to get the 2141 Spirit of Kamloops steam engine going for the 2014 calendar year. “We decided we’re going to call our campaign SOS 2141 — meaning save our steam engine,” said Brian Kelly, one of the board’s members. The 2141 is sidelined indefinitely awaiting repairs expected to cost somewhere in the $400,000-range. Kelly said the board is hoping to scrounge together $500,000 by the end of 2013 to make sure there is enough to pay for work on the popular locomotive. The repairs came as a bit of a surprise. The society had been planning on overhauling to the engine in 2015, but it was bumped up after a former employee sent a letter to Transport Canada advising there would be changes in the engine’s maintenance schedule. That resulted in the federal authority ordering an inspection, which couldn’t be completed without the train’s boiler being dismantled — an operation that would have been almost as pricey as the overhaul itself. So, the 2141 lost its certification. Now, the board is working to price out an overhaul. Kelly said members are travelling to the Okanagan later this week to meet with operators of the Kettle Valley Railway, which runs an almostidentical engine and recently performed similar maintenance. The board hopes to have a bank account set up in the near future to handle donations. Meanwhile, an RCMP investigation into an alleged misappropriation of society funds — unrelated to the decertification of the engine — is still ongoing. Anyone looking for more information about how to donate to the SOS 2141 campaign can call the Kamloops Heritage Railway Society at 250374-2141 or go online to kamrail.com.

The lawsuit, filed in January in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, claims Tom, Bob, Andrea and Devonna Gaglardi, working under the company name Revelstoke Mountain Resort, Inc., were deficient in installing utilities in the development. The alleged deficiencies include an unstable retaining wall, incomplete lighting and signage, a sewer system that has “not been set to proper grades” and a drainage system that “has not been completed or constructed as designed.” The document also accuses the
Gaglardis of providing falsified information to B.C.’s superintendent of real estate in four reports filed between 2007 and 2009. According to court records, the Gaglardis have yet to file a response to the notice of claim. In September 2012, a local trafficcontrol company filed a lawsuit against Gaglardi and Northlands, alleging the company failed to make good on a bill of less than $300. Interior Traffic Control was seeking $268.80 — plus $156 in court fees — for work done at the Sandman construction site on Lorne Street in February 2012.

Fill your yellow bag and help the food bank On Saturday, April 13, a veritable army of volunteers will fan out across the city or converge on Interior Vault with one goal in mind: to fill the shelves of the Kamloops Food Bank. The spring installment of the semi-annual Rotary Food Drive will help ensure there is enough to continue creating the hundreds of hampers Kamloopsians rely on to feed themselves and their families, said resourcedevelopment manager Melodie Grabner. It’s a big job, one that continues to grow. The most recent statistics show the agency feeds about 6,800 people a year, more than 800 of them under the age of five. Another 1,300 are school-aged, about 450 are seniors and the rest adults. Forty agencies also receive food they put into meals. All told, the food bank puts out more than one million pounds of food every year. Feeding the hungry is the goal but just as important is maintaining each client’s dignity and giving them respect, Grabner said. “Sometimes we are the only non-judgmental moment in their life,” she said. Executive director Bernadette Siracky said even now, five years after she took over as executive director, she is criticized for the job
she does. She is told “those people should just get off their butts and get a job,” she said. “We have to look at why people are in our lineups,” Siracky said, and we need to look at that as a bigger community. “They’re hungry. That’s what it is. They’re hungry. Instead of marginalizing them, look at the services we aren’t providing. Here at the food bank, we try to give them hope, we give them respect and we give them acceptance. This place is magical. It’s authentic because we care.” Yellow plastic bags for food donations are bein distributed in today’s (April 9) edition of Kamloops This Week. Volunteers will pick up those bags of food if they are left outside houses on Saturday, April 13. And, while they will do their best to get to every area of the city, it’s always possible some streets might be missed. If this happens, the bags of donated food can be taken to any grocery store in Kamloops or dropped off at the food bank at 171 Wilson St. Interior Vault, 661 West Athabasca St., is the site of the unloading and packing up of all the donations and people can also drop off their bags there the morning of April 13.

Industrial users want a break from city hall By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
Though city council has already settled on a property-tax hike for 2013, Kamloopsians could see their bills rise even more if the city’s major industrial players get their way. In a letter to the city sent last month, Domtar, Lafarge, Tolko and Arclin asked the city to slash the industrial tax rate for 2013 to $71.87 per $1,000 of assessed value.
Industrial taxpayers are due to pay $81.47 per $1,000 this year under the current rate structure. City finance director Sally Edwards has estimated the requested discount could leave the city short $800,000 to $900,000, which other tax classes would have to pick up. While the request was made about a month ago, council ran out of time during the last set of budget talks and will have its first debate on the issue today (April 9) during a special morning

Head-on crash claims life of woman A head-on collision between two pickup trucks in Knutsford on Saturday morning (April 6) claimed the life of a woman and sent five others — including four children — to hospital. The accident occurred on Highway 5A near Long Lake Road. Police say a black F350 was travelling northbound and a blue Dodge was
being driven southbound when one of the vehicles crossed the centre line on the highway in front of the Knutsford Community Hall. The F350 carried an adult driver and three pre-teen girls. The Dodge carried two adults and a toddler. The passenger died and the driver was injured. All others escaped serious injury.

days leading up to the discussion, said he’ll be taking the company’s ability to survive in the city into consideration during the debate. He wonders if it might be better to shift the tax burden now, rather than lose millions in tax revenue permanently. But, Singh said, he’d like to see Domtar bring more to the table as well. He said the company hasn’t been active enough in the community and should look to become a better corporate citizen.

From Nova Scotia comes queries about B.C. Liberals
T
HE PROVINCIALelection campaign officially begins one week from today when the chief electoral officer issues the writ on April 16. From there, it is 28 days of candidates in 85 ridings across B.C. working to convince voters to support them. Of course, the campaign to win on May 14 began long ago provincially and in the two Kamloops constituencies. Nobody has been campaigning longer, or with as large a profile, than Todd Stone, the B.C. Liberal candidate in Kamloops-South Thompson. Stone succeeds Kevin Krueger as the Liberal candidate in the bellwether riding, which has never elected a nongovernment MLA. His face has been prominent on buses and Stone has already spoken at a number of events. He is on Facebook and Twitter and has already hosted the premier. On the weekend, Stone reached out the old-school way, via the landline telephone by way of the Maritimes. The phone rang in my home and I did not recognize the number on the display. It had a 604 prefix, which made it a Lower Mainland number. However, the voice on the other end was that of a woman in Nova Scotia, an employee of a survey company calling on behalf of Stone. She wanted to know if I would support Stone (I don’t vote in my capacity as a journalist, I told her) and if there was any thoughts I had on Stone, the Liberals and the election. I told her what I have been told
CHRISTOPHER FOULDS Newsroom
MUSINGS over and over and over from many Kamloops residents since Stone was acclaimed as candidate — good candidate, wrong party. That could mean “wrong party” in the sense Stone would have a better chance running under a different political flag, based on pure strategy. It could mean “wrong party” in the sense Stone has latched on to a party that, due to perceived (HST) and real misdeeds (BC Rail trial payout to guilty parties), there should be an onus on the candidate to avoid representing such a tainted brand. The Nova Scotia pollster asked if I had any opinions on what the Liberals should be doing. The answer to that is about as obvious as the sun rising in the east — forget the crap that has hobbled the party to the point of catastrophe and begin the renewal process. And, any such renewal process will have nothing to do with changing the name of the party. It matters not what one calls the entity, for it will always be the coalition of all things not NDP. After all, the B.C. Liberal Party is
simply the new name for the Social Credit Party of days gone by. The latest polls offer only more bad news for the governing party, with the numbers pointing to a move to the opposition benches — if such polls are to be believed. (Recall polls in the last elections in Alberta, Ontario and Quebec and proceed very carefully). There really isn’t much any of the new Liberal candidates can say about the tumultuous past of the party they are promoting. They had nothing to do with any of the decisions that hampered former premier Gordon Campbell and now haunt Premier Christy Clark. If the lady with the questions from Nova Scotia is still listening, here’s what I think: Like NDP candidates in 2001 and Social Credit flag-bearers in 1991, this year’s crop of Liberals could be facing a dinosaur-like political reckoning. It is of no use to them to continually be drawn into debates on what happened and why. Those fortunate enough to not be linked to the current and past administrations must focus repeatedly on local issues, find and hammer home the good (and, despite the controversies, the B.C. Liberals have done a lot of good work in Kamloops) and work hard at shutting out the incessant gloom and doom being served up at the provincial level. Chances are, they are running for second and this is but one step in a long journey back. editor@kamloopsthisweek.com twitter.com/ChrisJFoulds
Politicians on all sides are busy campaigning for the May 14 election. Meanwhile, over in Victoria, at least one office hasn’t turned out the lights while waiting for voters’ decision. The office of the auditor general, which until late May is under the auspices of outgoing auditorgeneral John Doyle, is working harder than ever to let B.C. residents know how well or poorly government agencies have been spending their tax dollars. In recent weeks, Doyle has issued reports on carbon credits, governance of school districts, the airambulance service and financial management within the legislature. His office has also done a follow-up report, looking at a number of past audits and determining how various organizations are doing in meeting auditor-general recommendations. Doyle’s office is doing so much right now because he wants to have outstanding matters cleared off his desk as he returns to his native Australia. However, his look at so many areas of government spending is commendable, for it highlights a very important part of governance that is frequently ignored by politicians, commentators and the public. Politicians promise new programs and certain groups and individuals apply pressure for these programs. But, when they are put in place, is the money used to run them spent wisely? We all pay a lot of taxes. Many of the programs government runs are reasonably efficient, but others are not, and there is insufficient accountability in the spending of tax dollars. Thankfully, the auditor general is still asking hard questions, checking over the books and issuing tough and controversial reports.

Re: Bass column: By all means, vote, but please do not believe all you hear: “Good column that is more truth than people care to admit. “Our local paper, the Nanaimo News-Bulletin, published Bass’s column. “The problem with our system is that there really is no way to deal with those who choose to play fast and loose with the truth in our political system. “This includes not only the candidates, but their supporters as well. Most people vote based on emotion, not rational thought, which is what candidates take advantage of.” — posted by Colin Haime
Bass column denigrates hard-working politicians Editor: I have just read Dale Bass’ column (‘By all means, vote, but please do not believe all you hear,’ April 4) on why voters should not believe anything a political candidate says and I am left to conclude that Bass has reached the deepest levels of cynicism possible in a free and democratic society. It is often difficult to convince yourself to continue to wade into the world of politics when every time you stick your neck out, someone is willing to chop it off. But, those who do primarily do so because they want to make a positive difference for their community, their province and their country. Notice I said “primarily” as it is also true we do it is because it makes us feel a little important, it is challenging, it is exciting and it gives us a sense of self-worth. It is also true that, done conscientiously, it is extremely demanding physically, intellectually and emotionally.
While it is known that party politics is a team sport and there are limits to one’s ability to freelance, it is absolutely false that one cannot make a difference for constituents. If one looks around Kamloops, one will see the result of hardworking politicians at all levels and political stripes to create the best sporting facilities of a city our size, an incredible university with a new law school, a hospital that, after having 200 beds closed in the 1990s, has had $65-million in investments in the last six years and $80 million more starting this year, a new water-treatment centre, an upgraded sewage-treatment centre, and many more infrastructure investments that benefit the community. There are more residential-care beds and homelessness, while not eradicated, has been reduced substantially. The Trades Training Centre of Excellence at NorKam secondary would not be a reality without the relentless efforts of Kamloops-South Thompson Liberal MLA Kevin Krueger and me.
Elephants and mines are wonderful — at a distance
Re: Story: Mining for help can create controversy: “In Salt Lake City, they say 150 deaths each year are attributed to their mine’s air pollution. “Is it criminal to pollute the air and shorten life spans? “Is it criminal to donate money to different charities in a community and have us attack each other? “Keep your eye on Ajax as they would prefer we waste our time fighting each other. “Put pressure on all forms of government as this is where we make a difference.” posted by Lori Maloney
In Barriere, Clearwater and Sun Peaks, Towns for Tomorrow grants and Community Recreation grants are helping those communities develop the necessary infrastructure to keep them strong and viable. Physicianincentive programs are offered to attract needed health-care services. These things happen when elected representatives advocate for their communities. It is a disservice to those who seek public office to denigrate the profession as Bass has done. If we want to encourage good people to run at any level of government, the media should be willing to make the effort to understand just how hard representatives and their staff work on behalf of their constituents. It is just too easy to fall back on stereotypes and caricatures when trying to be provocative. Terry Lake MLA, Kamloops-North Thompson Minister of Environment

Editor: What is the price we would find acceptable to maintain an elephant in our homes for the next 25 years? This seems to be the debate about the proposed elephant (Ajax mine) being discussed in our community. For months I have heard some say they do not want to take a stand on the proposed Ajax mine. They want to wait until the government’s environmental review comes in. They have heard about the health concerns caused by increased toxins in the dust (copper, lead, mercury, iron) and groundwater. They understand the size of the open pit alone will be equivalent to Mt. Peter and Mt. Paul turned upside down — or five times the size of McArthur Island. They know this pit will be located 1.2 kilometres from an elementary school and a residential area. They know the tailings-storage facility will be nearly the height of the Seattle Space Needle and three kilometres long. This will be what one sees when entering Kamloops. Undoubtedly, they will have heard that health problems brought on my contaminatd wate and air may increase pressure on our medical systems. Is it true that citizens, organizations, clubs and even the university of our city are having their loyalties bought? No one I know, including myself, dislikes elephants or is against mining. There is a place for both — just not in “our homes” or in our city. Donna Greenlay Kamloops

Former TRU board member, senator accused of damage at Leland House By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
A bail hearing is scheduled for Thursday, April 11, for Adrian Miller. The one-time school trustee candidate and short-lived member of the senate and board of governors at Thompson Rivers University was arrested after a door was damaged at the Henry Leland House. Miller is charged with mischief under $5,000 and a breach of probation. He also has an outstanding trespassing charge after he allegedly was on the university campus while prohibited from being there on Oct. 4, 2012, and a charge of fraud under $5,000 relating to an alleged offence from Feb. 2 to June 20 last year. Miller was scheduled to appear in provincial court on Monday, April 8, but court was told he was in cells consulting with his lawyer, Michelle Stanford. Miller was in court last month when he tried to have breach of trust charges laid against two Crown prosecutors.
EXTRAVAGANZA
At the time, Miller — representing himself — said he wanted charges laid against Iain Currie and Lorne Fisher. Miller said his application related to earlier court actions ADRIAN when he tried MILLER to file charges against other people and the Crown issued stay of proceedings on the matters. Miller told the court Currie had advised him his office would continue to issue stays on any informations — documents to be filed with the court to proceed with laying charges — he tried to bring forward. Judge Edmond De Walle of Salmon Arm, who was brought in to hear the application because it involved Kamloops crown prosecutors, ruled Miller had not provided any foundation to allow him to proceed with any of the charges.

Ottawa aids in rebirth of John Tod By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
As assistant superintendent for the Kamloops-Thompson school district (School District 73), Karl de Bruijn helped shutter John Tod elementary in 2010 due to declining enrolment. As president of the Kamloops YMCAYWCA, de Bruijn will get to help bring the vacant school back to life as a new community centre — a project that received a financial boost from the federal government on Monday, April 8. “It’s never good to have an idle building,” de Bruijn said. “I think the neighbourhood is going to be delighted with this.” The City of Kamloops is getting $250,100 for the centre through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, which funds improvements to buildings that can no longer be used for their original purpose. KamloopsThompson-Cariboo Conservative MP Cathy McLeod said the onetime fund was massively popular, getting 10 times the requests it could handle. But, she said, the Kamloops project rose to the top because it has support from so many quarters. In the case of John Tod, the city will rent the school from the school district for a nominal fee, while the YCMA-YWCA and Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops will fill the
space with programs for kids, teens and families. The school will replace the Kamloops Boys and Girls Club’s McArthur Island home and, de Brujin said, the Y will slowly pull out of Northills Shopping Centre and move to John Tod, which is less expensive. “The Y’s North Shore operations will essentially all work out of here,” he said. Dave Hilton, board member for the Boys and Girls Club, said the school provides enough space for the club to continue with all its current activities, noting no new programs are planned once the move takes place. “Right now, it’s going to give us basically what we’ve got,” he said. “The advantage of this building is there’s room to expand, which we don’t have on the island.” The two organizations have been meeting with the city since the community centre was first announced last year and have a tentative plan for redeveloping the school. Inside the building, classrooms will be expanded or divided off as needed, de Bruijn said, and the outside of the school is due to be spruced up as well. “Some things will be familiar,” he said. “This gymnasium will be kept, but we’re hoping to put in folding retractable walls so at some point it could be four classrooms, or it could be opened up for large activities like sports games or exercise
classes.” While they had originally hoped to open the community centre by this September, Hilton said a spring 2014 opening is more likely. Kamloops-ThompsonCariboo Conservative MP Cathy McLeod announced federal funding on Monday, April 8, for John Tod elementary’s conversion to a community centre. The city will get $250,100 to assist with the $1.5-million renovation. Andrea Klassen/KTW

John Ike Koopmans, 49, has been charged with second-degree murder in the deaths of the Wharton and Fox and attempted murder in the shooting of the third person. Franklin knows them all — the victims and the accused — and said she felt sick to her stomach when she learned who had been charged. Police have asked her to not discuss what she knows of the investigation. Franklin said she and her brother were always close, even though she is five years older. However, she added, after Wharton met Fox, those frequent conversations became fewer and fewer. Her brother told her Fox had some issues with drugs that he was trying to help her overcome. Franklin knew he was struggling to keep the family welding business going after their father’s death and that he was spending more time with his mother, helping her with the grief of losing her husband. “Family was everything to Keith,” Franklin said. “Just

Cheri Franklin may never again set foot in the North Shore McDonald’s in Kamloops. Even now, driving by it, she feels tears start to flood her eyes because it’s the last place she saw her brother, Keith Wharton. Wharton, 43, and girlfriend Rosemary Fox, 32, were shot and killed, in Princeton on the Easter long weekend. “We sat there and my mom was there and it was so great and I bought them lunch,” the Kamloops woman said as she sat on the couch of a friend with whom she has been staying since her sister called her just before midnight on Saturday, March 31. “All she could say was mom was in the hospital and something had happened to Keith, but nobody knew what,” said Franklin, a 48-year-old HandiDart driver. She learned later her mother, Carol Wharton, who lives in a fifth-wheel trailer on the Old Hedley Road property in east Princeton, heard loud noises coming from the house 20 feet away. The 71-year-old, still grieving the death of her husband about a year ago, discovered the bodies of her son and his girlfriend, along with a 48-year-old man

He could have got jobs up north, but he wouldn’t take them because he didn’t want to leave his family behind.” She said her brother, a father of four, “was a generous, happygo-lucky, loving person. His heart was so big and he had a contagious smile and a totally infectious laugh. “He was a loving son and uncle and brother and an allaround family man.” The brother Franklin remembers is the guy who made everyone feel like they were part of the family, but who especially doted on his kids, his nieces and his nephews, teaching them the things about life he loved — camping, hiking, gold-panning, fishing, skiing and riding motorcycles. He was the kind of guy, Franklin said, who could work alongside his dad, live on property with his parents close by, open his door and his heart to those who came to visit and always be there for his friends. She said her family, dealing with their own grief, share their broken hearts with those who loved Fox. “This is all wrong. This is all just so senseless,” Franklin said. “It’s like a nightmare that won’t end and it may never really end.” Koopmans is expected to appear in April 24.

The Canadian Cancer Society will tell you that one in four Canadians are expected to die from cancer and that cancer is the leading cause of premature death in this country. 3,075 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer every week, there are 70,000 heart attacks and between 40,000 to 50,000 strokes annually. These statistics are frightening, as are the costs related to these critical illnesses. In recent years, medical advances have led to increased life expectancy and the ability to recover from various illnesses. Thanks to these advances, you’re much more likely to suffer a critical illness and live, then you are to die suddenly – which means financial hardship is likely what will be left behind.

Office of Religious Freedom will protect one religion
A
S OUR federal government decides to spend millions of dollars on an Office of Religious Freedom, I have been thinking about why Canada would need or want such an office. Apart from the obvious blatant catering to its religious fundamentalist base, what else could be behind such an obvious waste of money? We are told the purpose of the office is to promote religious freedom around the world and to speak out about the curtailment of such freedoms. Yet, in almost 100 per cent religious-oppression cases, the oppressors are members of another religion. Over the centuries, religion as an institution has shown itself to be intolerant of religious faiths that don’t go along with its own narrow interpretation of the dogma. Christianity has dozens, if not hundreds, of denominations that pretty much all contradict each other and, in some cases, are downright hostile to each other. A good example would be the religious mayhem that has plagued Ireland for the past few centuries.
BILL LIGERTWOOD Rational THOUGHTS We also have various sects within the Muslim faith, many of whom think nothing of slaughtering each other at the drop of a hat. As such, I find it hard indeed to figure out what the Office of Religious Freedom will be doing — other than possibly ensuring one religion, Christianity, is protected from other religions. How much proselityzing will take place? It is also a concern that those without a religious belief have been left out of the equation. There are at least seven countries where one can be arrested and, in some cases, executed for being an atheist. Of course, those doing the executing are members of one religion or another.
Of life and death I recently attended a funeral service that was
run by a local Christian minister. As usual, the service had more to do with the minister’s religious beliefs than with the deceased. This seems to be a common thread among religious funeral services. It seems to me that, even though the assertions put forward about the deceased may be comforting to friends and relatives, they are, in the final analysis, devoid of truth. The minister at this funeral made a point of asking how anyone could possibly live without the hope of surviving one’s own demise and living on in some other dimension where the order of the day apparently consists of worshipping some deity forever. On the contrary, it’s quite easy to life a very happy and rewarding life without the false hope offered by the minister. In fact, knowing this is the only ride we get makes it a lot more rewarding and valuable. The silly idea that we will survive our own death is the stuff of horror movies and fantasy stories. As is the case with most religious dogma, there is not a shred of evidence to support it and I would argue when
people of faith really think about it, they don’t buy it, either. We won’t see our deceased loved ones again except in our cherished memories, where they will live on as long as we do. It’s not quite as comforting, but it has the advantage of being the truth. Speaking of buying it, world-renowned convicted fraud and psychic Sylvia Browne was in Kamloops last week to fleece the credulous out of some of their money. Now here is a person who claims to have conversations with dead people. Of course, anyone can talk to the dead; it’s getting them to answer that’s the hard part. The James Randi Foundation has offered Browne $1 million if she can actually prove that she can do any of the things she claims she can do. Apparently, she claims that she can’t get in touch with James Randi to take up the challenge. Really? She can’t get in touch with an actual living person who has a telephone? If you believe that, you might be one of the poor souls who will shell out $800 for a 20-minute phone reading.

Chase Souto (left) tipped a Brendan Ranford shot past Kelowna Rockets’ netminder Jordon Cooke in overtime to give the Kamloops Blazers a 6-5 win at Interior Savings Centre on Jan. 28. Souto was not particularly proud of the effort he put forth in Round 1 of the WHL playoffs, but Round 2 has been a different story. Game 3 of the Blazers’ secondround series with the Kelowna Rockets will be played tonight at ISC. KTW file photo
The curious case of Chase Souto Souto admittedly ‘awful’ in Round 1, but clutch in Round 2, which continues tonight at ISC By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER sports@kamloopsthisweek.com
I
T’S BEEN A TALE OF TWO PLAYOFF ROUNDS for Kamloops Blazers’ forward Chase Souto. “The first series [a 4-2 triumph over the Victoria Royals in Round 1 of the WHL playoffs], I thought I was awful,” Souto said. “I feel like I hurt the team way more than I helped it. “I took a bunch of stupid penalties when I was 200 feet away from my net, especially in Game 6, when I took a bad one and they scored on the power play.” Game 3 of the Blazers’ secondround series with the
Kelowna Rockets gets underway tonight (April 9) at 7 p.m. at Interior Savings Centre. Souto’s indiscipline will not likely be fodder for the Blue and Orange faithful who file into the seats when Kamloops looks to take a 3-0 stranglehold on the best-of-seven duel. The goals he scored in Games 1 and 2, however, might be a topic of conversation. Kelowna had clawed to within one of Kamloops in the Little Apple on Saturday, April 6, when Souto scored at the 12:28 mark of the third period to restore the Blazers’ two-goal cushion. That marker gave his team a 4-2 lead, which ended up being
the game’s final score. The 18-year-old forward again put his team up two goals on the Rockets in Kelowna on Sunday, April 7, when he notched his third of the post-season at 5:06 of the third stanza to give the Blazers a 3-1 lead. Kamloops went on to win 5-1. Souto has not spent any time in the sin bin this series. “That’s what I should have been doing last series,” Souto said. “I’ve been chipping pucks deep, trying to play a good defensive game, trying to block shots and wear down their D.” Colin Smith was injured after being hit by Tyson Baillie in Game 1 and he did not
play in Game 2. The WHL deemed the hit illegal and has suspended Baillie for a number of games yet to be determined. Smith, the Blazers’ top scorer in the regular season, has what the Blazers are classifying as an upper-body injury and the official word is he is out day-to-day. His return to the lineup tonight is unlikely, with the Blazers up 2-0 in the series, having won without him on the ice in Game 2. “It’s good to know we can go out there and perform without a guy like that,” Souto said. “We’re battling for him. We all know he wants to be out there.” Kamloops forward
Tim Bozon is still out with a hand injury he suffered during a fight with Brandon Magee of the Royals in Round 1. He is not expected to return this series. Brendan Ranford has stepped up in his teammates’ absence and, by most accounts, has been the best Blazer in Round 2. “He must really not want to go home,” Souto said of his 20-year-old teammate. “He doesn’t want his junior career to end and we’re liking what he’s doing.” Ranford this series has three goals and one assist and was named first star in both Games 1 and 2. JC Lipon of the Blazers leads the WHL in playoff scoring
with four goals and 17 points. Ranford, who was named Denny’s WHL player of the week for the period ending Sunday, April 7, is tied for third with 14 points, four of them goals. Cole Cheveldave will again start between the pipes for Kamloops tonight, with Jordon Cooke in the crease for Kelowna. Souto said him and his teammates have been trying to shoot blocker-side on the Rockets’ netminder. “He’s pretty flashy with his glove,” Souto said. “He likes to make the big, flashy glove saves, TSN highlights. “He sells it a lot, so we’re trying to stay away from it and try
and not make his head get too big. “If he plays good, he can be good for them.”
Wearing white Fans who attend the first two home games of the Blazers’ secondround series with the Rockets will come away with some swag. White rally towels, 5,000 of them, will be provided by Pratt’s Pharmacy for tonight’s game. CSC Electric is sponsoring the giveaway of 3,000 white T-shirts at Game 4, which gets underway at 7 p.m. at ISC on Wednesday, April 10. The Blazers are again asking fans to wear white to home games in the playoffs.

Kamloops club set to host archery shoot By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER sports@kamloopsthisweek.com
If anything, come to the Kamloops Target Sports Association’s fourth annual 3D Archery Shoot to watch Myles Tuba square off with his archenemy. “There’s bragging rights because it’s the same people that go to each shoot,” said Tuba, the club’s archery events co-ordinator. “I’ve got a nemesis in Williams Lake. We’re very similar. We’re young, we’ve got hot wives and we’re good shooters. It’s all good fun.” The event runs on Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14, at the KTSA grounds at the very top of Hillside Drive. To register or inquire about the event, email m_tuba@hotmail.com.
Anyone wishing to participate must bring their own equipment. Tuba is expecting about 100 archers to attend, with representation from Kamloops, 100 Mile House, Williams Lake, Salmon Arm, Enderby, Kelowna, Penticton and Summerland. The archery community is close-knit and family-oriented, said Tuba, with each club hosting events throughout the season. “I could be gone every weekend shooting,” he said. “It does take you everywhere.” Men, women and children will walk along a path and take aim at life-size threedimensional Styrofoam targets. “The targets represent a cross-section of North American wildlife,” Tuba said. Shooters fire from
different distances, depending on the category in which they are entered. The action gets underway at about 9 a.m. each day. “Bring your family members that don’t shoot,” Tuba said. “It’s a very familyoriented sport.”

Grudge matches are not usually held on lawn-bowling surfaces, but Kay Miller of the McArthur Island Lawn Bowling Club plans on changing that. “I thought corporate bowling would introduce a few people to the sport and they could have a little fun,” said Miller, the club’s media liaison. “We’ll bring them out and pair them up with whoever they want to go against.” The surface at McArthur is expected to be ready for use by the end of April or early May. To book a showdown with the business or group — there is usually four people to a team — of your choice, email Miller at kmilleronmars@gmail.com. The cost to enter a squad is $10. She said the club is flexible with its hours of operation and is willing to accommodate most requests, including mornings, evenings and weekends. KTW issued a challenge to CJFC. Station anchor Bill O’Donovan happily accepted on behalf of his colleagues. That tilt is tentatively scheduled for May 19. “People think it’s only old people in white

2013 BC SENIORS GAMES
ice hockey By Sarah MacMillan SPECIAL TO KTW editor@kamloopsthisweek.com
Russ Reid has been playing hockey since he was 10 and he continues to play, participating in the BC Senior Games as well as on a recreational team. “It was really just a whole family thing,” Reid said. “There was not much else to do in southern Ontario. You either play hockey or you don’t.” Reid has played both competitive and recreational hockey. “In competitive hockey, I played goalie and I felt a lot of pressure,” Reid said. But, he noted, participating in recreational hockey is different. “It’s the speed of the play and the team play,” Reid said of aspects of the game he enjoys. “I also like the setting up of a goal instead of the scoring.” The game played at the BC Senior Games is different than most competitive hockey. “The idea’s not to get injuries, but to have a good time,” Reid said. “It’s more for the fun and love of the game.” In order to keep the hockey fun, the Games use different rules than those seen in the
Kamloops will host the 2013 BC Seniors Games from Aug. 20 to Aug. 24, 2013.The city is expecting more than 3,500 athletes, ages 55 and up, to attend the Games, which will feature 25 events, ranging from cribbage to ice hockey. The BC Seniors Games Society is a volunteer non-profit society funded by the provincial government and in co-operation with the BC Games Society, which event manages the Games. Kamloops can expect an economic impact from the Games of more than $2 million. KTW continues its biweekly feature page, with each page focusing on one of the Games’ events.

NHL. “There are two 20-minute stop periods instead of three,” Reid said. In addition, there is no bodychecking, boarding or slap shots allowed. Boarding in the Games is when an offending player pushes or checks an opposing player into the boards. “The emphasis is on trying to keep the game clean,” Reid said. Zone 8 is able to send a maximum of six teams. During the Games, teams will compete in a round-robin format, with teams receiving two points for a win, one point for a tie and no points for a loss. In the end, gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to all the players, coaches and managers of the top three teams in each division. Within the Games, there will be four different men’s divisions that are divided up, depending on age. For more information about ice hockey at the Games, contact Reid by phone at 250-374-8140, by email at russreid1000@hotmail.com or visit the BC Seniors Games website at bcseniorsgames.org.

Emerging, mid-career and established artists all make art proper title, it would have been “mid-career regional artist.” I’ve met a number of artists that call them selves “art divas” or “art goddesses” right on their business card — but I wouldn’t recommend it. To define each title in an artist’s career is not as simple as it may seem. There are no tests or real clear definitions to go by. Each stage is different for each artist and may happen at different times.
COMMUNITY
An emerging artist is thought of as someone that is at the beginning stage in their career. It is an artist that has recently graduated from college or university, or a self-taught artist that is just beginning to show their work in professional galleries. Generally, emerging artists have not yet established themselves in commercial or public art galleries and do not make a full-time living off of their art. X See LABELS B2

A mid-career artist not only has specialized training in their field but is also a working artist. They have been producing and showing their art for at least 10 years. They are recognized as a professional artist and are devoted to their craft. Some people say in order to be mid-career, artists must be making a living off of their art work. But, I think that this is unrealistic in Canada. An established artist is a mature artist who has dedicated the bulk of their lives to the creation of their art. They will have an extensive body of work and generally will have reached an advanced level of recognition and achievement.
You know you’re an established artist when your paintings sell for $60,000 a piece or when the national gallery calls you up to do a retrospective. Not many of us make it there, but we can dream. If I were to label myself these days, I would call myself a mid-career artist, as I have been working professionally for the last 25 years. When I was in my early 20s, I had a show at the Edmonton Art Gallery as an emerging artist. Despite the recognition and many other shows since, I still called myself an emerging artist for another 15 years. It wasn’t until I opened my own art gallery that I began to see myself as mid-career. Ultimately, it is up to the individual to recognize and work
with the changes that happen over time within their art and their lives. They must use these natural evolutions to guide them and help define where and who they are as artists. Though in this industry you can call yourself anything you want to, care must still be taken. A large and important-sounding title might initially grab people’s attention — but verification is only a Google search away. At the end of the day, it’s your body of work and your audience’s reaction to it that provide the ultimate determination. The Emerging Artist show runs from April 9 to May 14 at the Karla Pearce Art Gallery, 607 Victoria St. An opening reception will be held April 13 from 6-9pm. For info call 250-828-2032.

SMALL TRAINS, BIG CHEQUES Three-year-old Nathan McLean of Vernon (above), along with dad Ian and mom Jennifer, was at Calvary Community Church in Aberdeen on Saturday, April 6, taking in the Kamloops Model Railway Days show, which drew more than 2,000 people over two days. And, some of those attendees brought chequebooks. Brian Kelly (below, right), who organized the modeltrain event and also sits on the board of the Kamloops Heritage Railway Society, said $20,000 in donations came in to support the 2141 Spirit of Kamloops stream engine, which is off the tracks until at least next year. In the photo below, railway enthusiast Dave Emington (left) of Vancouver presents Kelly and society president Glen Wideman (centre) with a cheque for $15,000 from an anonymous donor in the Lower Mainland. The society hopes to raise $500,000 in an upcoming donation drive. George Wycherley photos/KTW

Last week I got to test drive the new 2014 MAZDA CX5. I was blown away by the proximity key - I could unlock and start the CX5 just by pressing the buttons, with the key still in my purse! Gas mileage was incredible! I drove over 200 kms and didn’t even use a quarter tank. The side mirrors also beeped and showed when someone entered my blind spot, which was really handy. And it had satellite radio and programmable navigation!

Alpine’s return to endurance racing after an absence of 35 years plays a part in the brand’s re-emergence ahead of the launch of the first car to be designed by Société des Automobiles Alpine-Caterham, planned for 2016.
It was a little less than 35 years ago that the 1978 Le Mans 24 Hours-winning AlpineRenault A442B paraded down the ChampsElysées in front of a cheering crowd that turned out to show its appreciation for the car’s success in the hands of Jean-Pierre Jaussaud and Didier Pironi. Now, the Parisian public and visitors to the French capital have another chance to discover the A442B, since it is one of the centrepieces of the No Limit exhibition, which is running through early April at L’Atelier Renault. The Champs Elysees premises consequently provided the ideal backdrop for the revelation of the new Alpine prototype, which is poised to compete in this year’s endurance racing season. Société des Automobiles AlpineCaterham’s CEO Bernard Ollivier and Philippe Sinault,
Signatech-Alpine Team principal, lifted the veil to reveal a striking blue and orange livery which recalls the colours sported by the Alpines which raced at Le Mans some five decades ago. The drivers who have been named to share the No. 36 Alpine-Renault form a blend of experience and youth — and all three are keen to get behind its wheel. Nelson Panciatici, 24, and Pierre Ragues, 29, who were confirmed at the time of the program’s original announcement, will be joined for the Le Mans 24 Hours by 34-year old Tristan Gommendy. The three Frenchmen all rose up through the ranks of Renault’s single-seater formula and, between them, have participated 10 times in the world’s most famous motor race. Another French youngster, Paul-Loup Chatin, has been chosen as the car’s reserve driver.

Chevy touts new Camaro as most track-capable yet Chevrolet introduced the restyled 2014 Camaro line at the recent New York Auto Show, including the return of the Z/28 — the most iconic model in Camaro history. The new Camaro models feature a revised exterior design that integrates high-performance aerodynamics for more efficient cooling and stability at high speeds. The new Camaro Z/28 also features a full aerodynamics package that creates downforce at speed, which helps make it the most track-capable offering in Camaro’s history. While the new Camaro Z/28 is not intended to compete in a specific race series, it is solely focused on track capability. In initial testing, the Camaro Z/28 is three seconds faster per lap than the Camaro ZL1. That extra speed comes from three areas: • Increased grip: The Z/28 is capable of 1.05 g in cornering acceleration, due to comprehensive chassis revisions • Increased stopping power: The Z/28 features Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes capable of 1.5 G in deceleration, and consistent brake feel, lap after lap • Reduced curb weight: The naturally aspirated Z/28 weighs 300 pounds less than the supercharged Camaro ZL1, with changes ranging from lightweight wheels to thinner rear-window glass Like the original, the 2014 Camaro Z/28 is offered only with a manual transmission. The heart of the 2014 Camaro Z/28 is the lighter, naturally aspirated 7.0-litre LS7 first introduced in the Corvette Z06. For the Camaro Z/28, the LS7 features unique induction and exhaust systems, and delivers at least 500 hp and 470 pound-feet of torque.
Kia shows off its new Soul at NYC auto show The all-new 2014 Soul urban utility vehicle debuted at the recent New York International Auto Show with more than a passing nod to the cutting-edge Track’ster concept that was unveiled last year. Riding on a new chassis that is stiffer, longer and wider, the all-new Soul has grown up without losing its edge, allowing for more passenger and cargo room while reducing noise-vibration harshness levels. Increased torque and significant suspension upgrades make the 2014 Soul a nimble and agile companion in congested urban environments. Pricing will be
announced closer to the Soul’s launch date in the third quarter of this year. The redesign of the Soul was boiled down to three focus areas — maintaining the iconic design while adding modern cues, providing premium features and content and improving driving dynamics that would make the 2014 Soul more desirable than ever. Premium touches such as available LED front positioning lights and rear LED lights help connect Soul to siblings within the Kia lineup that share similar design cues, such the as the 2014 Sorento and 2014 Forte sedan.
With the track in mind, Chevrolet introduced the 7.0-litre Z28 Camaro at the New York Auto Show.

The centre-stack design is minimalist with an air vent controlled by touch sensor. For extra safety, the steering wheel rim is capable of monitoring the driver`s biorhythms. As well as a steering wheel, there is a DIS (driving information system) controller connected to a gesture camera which provides easier operation while driving. With well-defined motions, drivers can access and set up each menu on the centre display. Kia Motors sprang a major surprise on visitors to the recent Seoul International Motor Show in Korea with the world premiere of its all-new CUB concept. Designed at the Kia headquarters studio in Seoul, under the direction of president and chief design officer, Peter Schreyer, the CUB is less than four metres long, has rearwardopening rear doors and an “accessall-areas” interior concept without traditional B-pillars, providing excellent access to the luxuriously trimmed cabin. The CUB’s nose has a broad wraparound mouth and there is a dip in the top of the windshield — a motif featured on Optima, Sportage and Cadenza models. The latest interpretation of Kia’s signature grille is a shallower design incorporating the turbocharger’s air intake, highlighted in body colour. With four individual seats, the CUB’s interior presents a unique ambience. The cabin creates the sensation of a luxurious coupe and is trimmed in black leather with yellow colour

Subaru shows off WRX concept at NYC auto show Subaru unveiled the Subaru WRX Concept at the 2013 New York International Auto Show. The design concept hints at the design language of the next-generation WRX with a focus on sharp handling, all-wheel-drive (AWD) grip and turbo power. The bold and muscular design emphasizes turbo-charged power and AWD grip in a more agile and athletic form. To further improve handling dynamics, the Subaru WRX Concept features a carbon-fibre roof to enhance the already low centre of gravity and reduce weight. Considerably lower, sleeker and wider, the Subaru WRX Concept delivers even more street presence than previous generations of the WRX. The new grille design is larger and

bolder and sets off the classic WRX hood scoop. A pronounced power bulge provides clearance for the new turbocharged engine and intercooler. A prominent hexagonal grille form and deep lower valences with air intakes are designed to enhance aerodynamics, add downforce and aid engine cooling. The three dimensional mesh pattern of the grille denotes the performancedriven nature of the Subaru WRX Concept and sets the Subaru star cluster apart, while the new hawk-eye headlights integrate the Subaru design heritage. A sharp character line runs from the front corner through to the taillights, intersected by the boldly flared wheel arches emphasizing Subaru’s AWD system.
The Subaru WRX Concept bowed at the recent New York Auto Show.

Athletic stance and cleaned-up interior bolster new ES-class By Neil Moore METROLAND MEDIA wheelstalk.com
T
HE LEXUS BRAND’S entry-luxury ES has always been somewhat of a grandpa car. It isn’t a knock against this well-crafted, amply powered sedan. It’s a statement that, in terms of ride and styling, it’ll be at least a couple of decades before you’d see one in my driveway. Mind you, it may take that long before I can afford the payments. But, back on point, the ES has always been the Buick of the Lexus lineup — conservatively priced and conservatively dressed, both inside and out. It has also been a steady seller. So, in designing the sixthgeneration ES sedan, the company wisely chose not to fix what wasn’t broken, and instead sharpened its look and driving dynamics just enough to where I didn’t feel the urge to don a beige cardigan and Tilley hat before getting behind the wheel. The ES now comes in two models — the aptly named 3.5litre V6-powered ES 350 (268 horse power, 248 pound-feet of torque), and the less-obviously tagged ES 300h hybrid, which actually gets a 2.5-litre inline four, working with an electric motor to generate a total of 200 horses. My tester for the week was the hybrid and, if I didn’t already know it was powered by a four-cylinder engine, I’d have assumed there was a V6 under the hood. Like all hybrids, the ES 300h benefits from the electric motor’s nearly instantaneous peak torque and, if you set the drive mode select feature to Sport, the system upshifts later and has a quicker throttle response for a surprisingly lively feel. But this is a hybrid, not a sports sedan, and such waywardness will torpedo any chance of achieving its 4.8 L/100 km combined fuel-economy rating — not that I’ve ever hit these numbers anyway. And, although the revised suspension, stiffer body and quicker steering ratio offer a slightly more dialed-in driving experience than the former floaty ride, this new ES is better driven

in either normal or eco modes to gain the full advantage of its substantial hybrid price premium. The ES 300h starts at $43,900 and, although it comes with a few items not found in the base ES 350, is priced at $4,400 more. Nonetheless, you do get a lot of vehicle for the dough, despite losing a bit of trunk space to the battery (342 versus 430 litres), and the ability to drop the back seats to expand cargo room. Rear-seat leg room is abundant — you can really stretch out — thanks to the longer wheelbase. The centre armrest drops down to reveal a pair of cupholders and there are manual sunshades available for the rear side windows, not to mention an optional power sunshade on the back windscreen. These are ideal when you’re carrying small children. Up front, as you’d expect, seating is more luxurious with standard 10-way power adjust and heating for both front seats, and memory for the driver. Seat cooling is also available, as is a heated steering wheel. The latter feature seems a minor detail, but it is one I’ve grown to appreciate for thawing my frozen hands after brushing off snow or scraping an icy windshield. Lexus has been a standard bearer for entry-luxury passenger cabins and, in the new ES, they continue in this role. Where the previous generation was nice but a little stodgy, the redesigned interior offers a fresher look. Yes, there’s still woodgrain — but less of it along with more stitched leathers (and faux leathers), metallic accents and straighter lines. Dual-zone climate control is standard — just set it and forget it — and other features you’ll find even in base trim include power tilt/telescopic (leather-
wrapped) steering, smart key with pushbutton start, Bluetooth, multi-info display, Eco-drive monitor, backup camera and an eight-speaker premium audio system with seven-inch display screen. On the exterior are 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear-lip spoiler, power moonroof and blue hybrid badging, distinguishing it from its V6-powered sibling — which also gets dual exhaust outlets. As with most entry-luxury vehicles, you can push the price well past this humble pretence. Want navigation? For this you’ll be shelling out another $1,800 — also providing a larger eight-inch screen, heated steering, woodgrain and rain-sensing wipers. The joys of leather will push the price to $49,100, also giving you an upgraded 15-speaker Mark Levinson audio system, rear sunshades, navigation and front seat ventilation. And, topping out at $53,200, the technology package delivers all of the above plus radar cruise control, backup sensors, blind spot monitor with rear crosstraffic alert, lane-departure alert, pre-collision system, passenger seat memory and more. Aside from the smaller trunk, I have another small gripe, which is that the Atkinson-cycle fourcylinder idles less smoothly than the V6. But, the hushed Lexus cabin more than makes up for this. You’ll find plenty of competition among mid-size premium sedans, but not with hybrid powertrains. Sure, there’s the less expensive Buick LaCrosse eAssist and much pricier Infiniti M Hybrid, but this is an area where Toyota/Lexus has pretty much set the standard — across all segments — and continues to dominate. I expect the new ES hybrid will continue the company’s winning ways.
The new-generation Lexus ES interior includes more stitched leathers, metallic accents and straighter contours. Gone is the overpowering woodgrain.

Volvo announces performance badges for 60-series models
The new R-Design versions of Volvo S60, V60 and XC60 feature an outstanding blend of a renewed sports appearance, a dynamic driving-focused chassis and engine output up to a substantial 329 hp with the Polestar performance option. All three R-Design cars — including the XC60 — now feature a unique face with a redesigned, dynamic, expressive nose. The frameless Tech matte-black grille has high-gloss black stripes, a silk metal diagonal and a refined R-Designed emblem. The DRL lights in the outer corners reinforce the low, road-hugging impression. At the rear, the unique diffuser with aero fins is flanked by the round, high-tech R-Design tailpipes. Inside, the new sport seats come as standard in the R-Design cars. They feature a blend of black nubuck textile and perforated leather. The Adaptive Digital Display features the option to switch between three layouts with different configuration and functionality — Elegance, Eco and Performance. In the R-Design versions, the Elegance theme boasts a radiant blue colour. Acceleration times in the T6 version, using the new paddle shift with the automatic gearbox in Sport mode, have been cut in all three cars with 0-100 km/h now down to 5.9 seconds (previously 6.1) in the S60 T6. The R-Design Sport chassis has been lowered 15 millimetres compared with the Dynamic chassis in the standard S60 and V60, and the spring stiffness is 15 per cent higher compared with the dynamic chassis in the standard S60 and V60. This gives responsive driving pleasure with full control.

LOCAL NEWS Mike Miltimore’s Riversong guitar line is getting attention from across the continent. Even Treasury Board president Tony Clement (right) is a fan, finding time to jam with Miltimore during a recent visit to Lee’s Music in Kamloops. P
RODUCING two guitars a month is manageable. Bumping that number up to 100 or more in the same time period is another world completely — one in which Mike MIltimore is now residing. Miltimore’s new Riversong guitar line has been greeted with such interest since he
introduced it that he has found it necessary to take the production line out of the basement of Lee’s Music and into a larger building. The new location is 450 Lorne St., the former location of Menzies Printing, and the goal is to be in full production by September. In the meantime, orders will be filled out of the Battle Street building that also houses Lee’s Music. Miltimore said he is
video-online] www.kamloopsthisweek.com also hiring staff, expecting to finally have about nine people working in production. The company’s Tradition guitar series will also be moved to the Lorne Street site. “It’s been crazy,”
Miltimore said. “How do you go from two a month to 100 a month and keep the quality and consistency there?” Helping are two Business Development Bank of Canada consul-
tants — one a specialist in financial and strategic aspects and the other a specialist in manufacturing. The guitar design has been praised by experts for its innovative construction, which involves a neck that runs through the guitar body, attaching at the base and adjustable with an Allen key. In doing so, Miltimore has made the guitar easier and quicker to set up. Since showing the
line at the National Association of Music Merchants conference in Anaheim in January, Miltimore said, he’s had requests from many guitar- and music-related publications to do stories on the line. Some have praised the guitar as one of the best changes to guitar production in years and others have requested an instrument to play and review, something on which Miltimore is now working.
For the past four years, Tatiana Gilbert and other students at Westsyde secondary have been fundraising to help build a school in a village in Kenya. There have been small events, the Grade 12 student said — a bake sale, for example, and other kinds of fundraisers students in schools throughout the district take on every year. But, Tatiana said, it’s time for a big push, one large event that she hopes will bring in about $5,000 of the estimated $8,500 it will cost to build the school. To do that, she and others at Westsyde have organized Freedom Fest, a chance to celebrate having the freedom of being in school, but not in class, as they open it up to the student body, as well as to those in grades 6 and 7 from the feeder schools in the area, for an overnight experience of games, music, food and fun. Entry is $25 for the event, which starts on the evening of Friday, April 26, and wraps up the morning of Saturday, April 27. For that, students will get a hamburger at midnight and a pancake breakfast in the morning. Throughout the evening will be fun activities, including some games of Clue — done in a threedimensional version — and flashlight tag. Students Duncan Chalmers and Tyson Bodar, both singer-songwriters, will perform and there will be a concession booth, some short, informative workshops and mats, pillows and blankets for those who actually think they might get some sleep during the event. Anyone can attend the breakfast at 7 a.m. where, for $5, the public can also have a pancake breakfast.

$1-million for literacy work Decoda Literacy Solutions has been given a $1-million grant to help fund the organizations literacy outreach programs in the province. Last month, the organization announced it would no longer fund literacy co-ordinators in rural communities, targeting its money at larger urban areas. Decoda CEO Brenda LeClair said at the time the decision was sparked by the provincial gov-
ernment cutting its funding from $2.5 million to $1 million in each of the last two years, forcing it to make decisions on how best to spend the money. Education Minister Don McRae announced the restored funding at a Decoda conference in Vancouver. Decoda receives other money from government — $665,642 from the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills
Development and an additional $130,000 from the Ministry of Advanced Education, Innovation and Technology. It also receives $500,000 from the annual Raise-A-Reader campaign. The organization, created in 2011 when Literacy BC merged with the literacy department of 2010 Legacies Now, supports 102 community literacy groups throughout the province.
On call — even in the wee hours On-call doctors will remain available in the early morning hours now until the end of June. In February, the Interior Health Authority decided to remove doctor availability in the Medical On-Call Availability Program (MOCAP) between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. MOCAP is a provincial program to provide emergency medical care to new or unassigned patients through an oncall rotation. Doctors contract
with the IHA to provide the service. At the time, Kelly Murphy, the IHA’s corporate director for medical affairs and clinical network, said the program pays the doctors even if their services aren’t required and removing coverage for those two hours was a way to save money. Dr. Shelley Ross, president of the B.C. Medical Association (BCMA), said she is happy the IHA worked with her group to resolve the issue at
