BC VOTES 2013
Candidate sixpack ready for election campaign By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
The race to form the next B.C. government has begun. Sure, Facebook ads and lawn signs surfaced weeks ago and Kamloops’ six candidates for provincial office have already knocked on a good number of doors, but the campaign becomes official today (April 16). In Kamloops-North Thompson, incumbent Liberal MLA Terry Lake sees the days leading up to the May 14 election as nothing short of a battle between his Liberals and the NDP. “I think it’s about the future of British Columbia in terms of
the economy and in terms of ensuring that families have opportunities for supporting themselves with goodpaying jobs, he said. Where do the B.C. Conservatives fit into that equation? “I think it’s clear that in order to maintain a free-enterprise government, it’s important to vote for the party that has the best chance of forming government, Lake said. To him, that’s his Liberal party. Ed Klop, perhaps not surprisingly, sees it somewhat differently. The Conservative candidate for KamloopsNorth Thompson ran twice for Alberta’s Wild Rose party during his years in that province
and thinks B.C. is due for a new party in the same model. “The Wild Rose made a significant switch in Alberta politics. They’re definitely the government in waiting, said Klop, who became the Conservative candidate in Kamloops-North Thompson last week after local riding association president Ed Fehr dropped out due to health issues. “I really hope the Conservatives can make that same sort of confidence in the citizens British Columbia, Klop said. NDP candidate Kathy Kendall said one of her goals for the campaign is to get voters engaged in the
political process again — especially those who are young or in the lowincome bracket. “They feel powerless and I like to make the connection for them that every individual only gets one vote, she said. “So, you may feel powerless compared to some other person, but they still only get a vote as well. Kendall believes many voters have been turned off by negative campaigning, but said the “positive message of the NDP may help reengage them. Across the river in Kamloops-South Thompson, Todd Stone agrees with fellow Liberal Lake that the economy is key in this
election, but he doesn’t subscribe to the Liberal versus NDP narrative. “This election is really going to be 85 local elections at the constituency level where, yes, the leader will matter, the platform will matter, the record of the parties will matter, the vision they put forward will matter, he said. “But, more so than ever before, I think the quality of the candidates locally and the extent to which the candidates locally have been engaged in the community and have fought for a number of different things over the years, that’s going to matter. The local connection is key as well for Kamloops-South
Thompson NDP candidate Tom Friedman, who predicts the election campaign will hinge on door-knocking and talking one-on-one with voters — actions that will make up the bulk of his campaign over the next month. “I think the election will be won or lost on the trust issue, Friedman said. “Who do you trust to manage the finances of the province and who do you trust to be responsive to the needs of all British Columbians? Peter Sharp, the B.C. Conservative candidate in Kamloops-South Thompson, said he will be trying to show voters why they shouldn’t trust either the Liberals or the NDP to run the

TODAY: TODD STONE, B.C. LIBERAL, KAMLOOPS-SOUTH THOMPSON
Extolling a fresh start By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
It’s clearly not the first time the exchange has taken place. “Vote for Stone,” Todd Stone calls out, flashing a thumbs-up as a man steps out of a delivery van just up the block from Stone’s Seymour Street campaign office. “I already told you what I think of that,” the man replies. “I said Stone, not Liberal,” Stone shoots back, not missing a beat. The man demurs further and Stone offers a line some of his Kamloops critics may recognize as their own with a grin. “I know, I know. Good candidate, wrong party.” But, for Stone, there is no other party. Hasn’t been since he was 16. It was 1988 and the election that year was federal, with a freetrade debate at its centre. Stone was fascinated by the action. Along with a few like-minded friends from Kamloops High School, he started attending political events around the city, giving each of the major parties a shot. “The group that we had the most fun with and we felt the most comfortable with was the
Dave Eagles/KTW
Liberal group,” he recalls. Stone and his friends would go on to form a Young Liberals club at school, signing up about one-third of the student body in the process. Stone was hooked for good. “It was just fun,” he says. “Here I am, 16 years old and going to conventions and meeting all these really cool, fun people.” Among those “cool, fun people” were Gordon Campbell, thenmayor of Vancouver, but with provincial ambitions, and Christy Clark, a young political organizer at Simon Fraser University. Stone would go on to work both their leadership campaigns, spend four years as Campbell’s executive assistant and manage outgoing Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Kevin Krueger’s 2001 provincial run. When voters returned the party to power in that election, the Liberals appointed Stone to the Thompson Rivers University board. But while his party roots run deep — any mention of the embattled Clark is met with assurances the premier will surprise voters yet — Stone doesn’t seem to be entirely joking (though he claims otherwise) when he tosses out the
“Stone, not Liberal” message. “I think there’s a tremendous opportunity here in KamloopsSouth Thompson to present ourselves, to present me, as a fresh, local alternative,” he says. “We can provide the people of Kamloops-South Thompson with change without changing government or voting NDP. “I’m a new candidate, I’m part of the renewal that’s taking place in the B.C. Liberal Party.” Stone isn’t the only candidate to paint the battle for KamloopsSouth as one that will be won based on door-knocking and individual connections. He just takes it a step further. “It’s not about party labels,” he says. Instead, he argues, it’s about candidate accomplishments — an argument that, if one accepts it, puts Stone’s small-business pedigree and lengthy board-member resume ahead of those years of party affiliation. It’s an argument that sounds a lot like “Stone, not Liberal.” “It’s more about who would be the strongest voice to stand up and defend and promote the interests of people of Kamloops,” Stone says. “I think I am that strong voice.”
KTW Q&A: The lighter side of Todd Stone, his love of country music and more KTW: Mac or PC? STONE: “Mac. It’s way easier to use.” KTW: What website do you have to visit every day? STONE: “All Things Awesome. Most of the things they list I would agree are awesome, like when you walk into a bakery, that smell.”
KTW: One interesting fact most people wouldn’t know about you: STONE: “I’m a huge country music fan. My wife and I, we’re taking dance lessons right now, which has been a tremendous amount of fun. We’re learning how to dance the country two-step and, last Sunday, we learned how to do the fox trot.”
KTW: If you could have dinner with one politician, living or dead, who would you pick? STONE: “It probably would be Nelson Mandela from an international perspective. I just think what he endured because of what he believed in and the impact he’s had on the world is remarkable.”

KTW: What is the last book you read? STONE: “How the Irish Saved Civilization. During the dark ages, when books were being burned all around Europe, there was a small group of Irish monks who hand-wrote copies of a whole bunch of different books — and they hid them. And, if they hadn’t done that, we would have lost an incredible amount of literature and writing.”
KTW: What’s your favourite movie? STONE: “I’m a big James Bond fan, so you can kind of take your pick. Maybe Goldfinger. But, there also isn’t a political film out there I haven’t watched a few times.”

BC VOTES 2013
Conservatives change candidate The B.C. Conservative Party has been forced to make a candidate change in the Kamloops-North Thompson riding. Riding president Ed Fehr has had to bow out as candidate due to health reasons, with Ed Klop replacing him. Klop, who owns an asphalt-repair company and lives in Sorrento, had sought the Conservative nomination in Shuswap and twice ran for the Wildrose Alliance Party in Alberta.
Independent candidates in race Each of Kamloops’ two ridings have had a fourth candidate enter the race — neither of whom is affiliated with a major political party. In Kamloops-South Thompson, noted freemason Brian Alexander is running as an independent. Alexander is well known for having run for mayor of Kamloops in 2011 and for engaging in lengthy debates with court officials over his identity. In Kamloops-North
Kamloops, John Ford, leader of the unregistered X Party, has entered the race. Ford is from Pritchard and his party’s platform includes a farmersfirst philosophy, in addition to a vow to end the carbon tax and eliminate the Pacific Carbon Trust.

John Cummins. A one-hour television debate is set for Monday, April 29, at 7 p.m. on Global TV, also featuring the four major party leaders. Clark is challenging Dix to a one-onone televised debate proposed for May 6. Dix said it would be “disrespectful” to voters and other party leaders to exclude them. In 2011, Clark declined Dix’s challenge for a one-onone debate on the HST.

It’s still easy being Green in B.C.
T
TOM FLETCHER Our Man in
VICTORIA Greens would extend this steeply increased carbon tax to industries such as natural gas and cement production. Leader Jane Sterk told me she expects cement producers and the like to adapt, rather than shut down as their competitive position erodes. And what about the extra billions in carbon tax revenues? Sterk says most should continue to go to income-tax reductions,
as is now the case, because the purpose is to change consumption patterns, not to increase overall tax revenue. Most, but not all. “We think there is an argument to be made for putting, for a period of time, the increased revenue from the carbon tax into creating the infrastructure that allows people to benefit from a carbon tax,” Sterk said. That means transit and potentially retrofits of homes and other buildings. Tax increase aside, this is essentially the NDP position, too. The Greens emphasize wind and geothermal power. Sterk faces the awkward task of arguing against hydroelectric expansion. A Green government
would cancel the Site C dam project on the Peace River. Sterk says it would only serve as a subsidy to liquefied natural gas exports, which she doesn’t believe materialize as international competitors develop. The Greens’ star candidate, University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver, agrees. Both point to vast reserves of Russian gas that may well get to Asia more quickly and cheaply. Sterk said the 35,000 existing gas wells in northern B.C. “are not going to be shut down.” Actually, in the absence of LNG exports, that is exactly what would happen to many of them. The U.S. has its own shale-gas supplies and
is B.C.’s only current export customer. Converting transport trucks and BC Ferries to LNG fuel isn’t going to maintain the vast industry blooming in northern B.C. The official Green Party position is to place a moratorium on B.C. gas drilling while a comprehensive water use policy is developed. Current innovations, such as reusing municipal wastewater, are ignored. The Green platform also demands disclosure of chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing, which the B.C. Oil and Gas Commission has already done. If one were to design a self-fulfilling prophecy that B.C.’s LNG project is doomed to fail, the Green party platform would be a
good place to start. Reading through Green Book 2013, I’m left with the impression that much of it remains calculated as a soothing message for urban voters who have been convinced it’s courageous to drive their cars down to an anti-tanker protest. If Weaver, Sterk or any other Greens get elected, it will be surfing a wave of protest votes from people weary of the B.C. Liberals and the NDP. It will not be due to the practicality or even internal consistency of their polices. It’s still pretty easy being Green. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com

This is the first of a series of policy commentaries on the four main parties contesting the 2013 B.C. election. HE B.C. Green Party has higher than usual hopes for the 2013 election. It was also the first to put out a substantial policy document, albeit one that is still being debated and altered. Green Book 2013 continues the utopian positions that only a party with no chance of forming a government has the luxury to put forward. For example, they would double the area of parks in B.C., but take 100 years to do it. Immediately, they would almost double the carbon tax, taking it from seven to 12 cents on a litre of gasoline.

Devin Coombs’ mom often left town, leaving him and his brother, Harly. She would be gone for week, sometimes for months. But, she was never gone for a year — until now. The boys — Devin is 15 and Harly is 16 — don’t want to believe their mom, Sandra Lynn Wilson, is dead. Kamloops Mounties
do, however, although lead investigator Steve Newport still holds out hope he is not heading a murder probe. He has to, even though every tip, every scarce piece of evidence, every phone call and every rumour has been checked thoroughly since the then-41-year-old woman went missing early on the morning of April 6, 2012. Devin and Harly joined other family members at the Kamloops RCMP Battle Street detachment on Friday,
April 12, for an emotional appeal to the public to help them end the ordeal. The boys’ father, Mark Coombs, sat at the side of the detachment board room during the press conference, his face stonelike as Staff Sgt. Grant Learned reviewed the story that has been the family’s reality. Wilson started out as all young women do, full of dreams and goals and happiness, Learned said, but, through involvement with drugs, “she followed the common path taken by many vulner-

Wilson had started to regain some control over her life and had an apartment in the Henry Leland House on St. Paul Street, said Dale Brush of the ASK Wellness Centre, which operates the building. “She had come a long way,” Brush said. “She adored her kids and her family. She would do anything for anyone. If she had a dollar in her pocket and someone asked for it, she’d give it to them.” Some time between 12:40 a.m. and 1 a.m. on that Good Friday morning on April 6, 2012, Wilson left Leland House and headed to the nearby 7-Eleven store, where she was recorded on its surveillance camera. That was the last time she was seen and Friday’s press conference served as a plea for anyone who might have been in the store at that time or driving nearby and who may have seen something — anything — to call police. — a car seen in the area, a person walking by — might be that one piece of the unfinished puzzle police have been compiling during the past 12 months, one that Learned said has gone from forensics to psychics in a quest to find Wilson. Devin, the more talkative of the two brothers, said he, Harly and their dad last saw Wilson during Christmas 2011. “And then, she was gone again,” Devin said. He told of a time when he was much younger and in a store on the North Shore to buy a slushie. A woman came over, smiled and asked him if he was Devin Coombs. “I told her I was and was gonna ask her who she was, but then she was gone,” the boy said. “The next day, my dad gave me money for another slushie and I went there and she was there and she told me she was my mom. “And she asked how Harly was and said she wanted to send us some money. “She didn’t, but then she did a month or two later.” Harly agrees with his brother that it’s just as likely his mother is living somewhere else as it is that police are correct in their suspicion of what happened to her. “She wasn’t always there,” Harly said, “but, when she was in our lives, she was really in our lives.” Wilson’s sister, Shannon, acknowledged she also didn’t know her sibling all that well, but this doesn’t change the anguish they all feel. Shannon is one of three sisters. A third sister died at age 18. “She never really got to know her daughters, Sky and Desiree,” Shannon said as her tears fell. “Let us have something so our hearts don’t hurt anymore.” Anyone with information is asked to call Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477.

The Canadian Cancer Society will tell you that one in four Canadians are expected to die from cancer and that cancer is the leading cause of premature death in this country. 3,075 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer every week, there are 70,000 heart attacks and between 40,000 to 50,000 strokes annually. These statistics are frightening, as are the costs related to these critical illnesses. In recent years, medical advances have led to increased life expectancy and the ability to recover from various illnesses. Thanks to these advances, you’re much more likely to suffer a critical illness and live, then you are to die suddenly – which means financial hardship is likely what will be left behind. So, critical illness insurance – is it worth it? If you find yourself diagnosed with any of the 25 critical illnesses covered, critical illness insurance gives you the ability to focus on your recovery by eliminating the financial stress that often accompanies many of these illnesses. Your critical illness insurance can be used to pay your mortgage; look after your family or pay for those medical costs incurred that may not be covered by the government or by your employment health benefits. Yes, it is definitely worth it!

PET LOVERS FOR OVER 38 YEARS!
Sandra Wilson was last seen on April 6, 2012, leaving Henry Leland House (right). Wilson has a distinctive tattoo on the right side of her chest (above).
No link found among murders Const. Steve Newport, lead investigator on the disappearance and presumed murder of Sandra Lynn Wilson, said nothing has been found to link her to other women who have been murdered in Kamloops in the past decade. • Heather Hamill, whose body was found off Indian Point on Aug. 1, 2003. Robert Balbar, her commonlaw husband, was convicted of second-degree murder in 2010. • The body of Shana Labatte — who, ironically, sang at a memorial service for her friend Hamill just
weeks after her body was found — was found iin the south side of the Thompson River near Mission Flats Park on March 23, 2004. No one has been charged in her death. • The badly beaten body of Sherry Lee Hiltz was found in a backyard of a home in the 800-block of Surrey Avenue on April 9, 2005. No one has been charged in her death. Newport said while there are similarities — each had addiction issues and worked the street — no evidence has been found linking their murders.

From Tom Friedman supporters at the Blazers’ game to Pamela Martin hosting a B.C. LIberal infomercial, the election campaign is off to a cheesy start.
For $130K a year, Pamela Martin warns us of the 1990s
A
DAM SCOTT’S breathtaking Masters victory was a couple of hours old and the clock read 6:57 p.m. Dinner was done and an order left my lips and landed in the ears of my two kids: Quiet! For the next 30 minutes, there shall be silence as I watch the much-anticipated 30-minute infomercial featuring Premier Christy Clark and her B.C. Liberals. It was at the 17-minute mark that my Grade 6 son, having been sitting behind me at the dining-room table as he finished a French homework assignment, crept over and whispered something. I paused the infomercial (sometimes the PVR and its ability to pause live TV just may be the greatest invention of all time) and listened. “If the news is saying the NDP is so evil, how come they are ahead in the poll?” my son asked. He had been doing his homework while the words of Clark, Stockwell Day, Mike de Jong, Todd Stone and Dave Babych (!) drifted into his head. I had to explain I was not watching the news, that this was a 30-minute commercial created by the B.C. Liberals, who are desperate to defeat the B.C. NDP in the May 14 election. Those “regular” people with their fears of another NDP government? Not so regular, I told my son, but rather B.C. Liberal supporters, with those coffee-shot images no more real than a scene in a movie. My son’s take? Pretty darned persuasive if one did not know it was a commercial.
CHRISTOPHER FOULDS Newsroom
MUSINGS So, if the target audience was a populace of 11-year-olds who had the right to vote, the B.C. Liberals might be coasting to re-election. As it is, Sunday’s 30-minute commercial was, um, kind of uncomfortable in a cheesy sort of way. It was well done from a production standpoint — no doubt about it. It was a slick package, complete with crisp shots of the premier talking about her views while “regular” people sipped coffee and listened. There were clips of her visit to the Williams Lake Stampede, in what her predecessor, Gordon Campbell, was fond of calling the Heartland. And, yes, between offering her views on the importance of a debtfree province, there were plenty of warnings that an NDP victory on May 14 would land us all in the Back to the Future DeLorean for a ride to the nasty ‘90s, which the various guests on the commercial made sound like Hell personified. The one oddity in the entire 30 minutes was having Pamela Martin host the program. As Clark boasted about smaller government, there was Martin again
and again, her visage serving as a classic example to all viewers of government waste. Martin pulls in $130,000 of your tax dollars to perform something called outreach services for the premier. Or, as she told the Vancouver Sun upon hitting the taxpayer-funded jackpot: “Improve public awareness and engagement and ensure communication is a two-way conversation,” and “help the public’s concerns be translated into action by sharing with the premier the challenge British Columbians face navigating government.” Whew! All that and she hosts an infomercial as well. Tony Parsons only wishes he could be so vital to democracy.
NDP SMELLS OF HAVARTI The B.C. Liberals are not the only ones being too cheesy, as fans attending last week’s Kamloops BlazersKelowna Rockets game can attest. There, in front of Interior Savings Centre, were NDP supporters stumping for Kamloops-South Kamloops candidate Tom Friedman. “Tom Friedman supports the Blazers” read one sign, the inference being the B.C. Liberals don’t? Fans go to such events to escape the real world, not to encounter such crass campaigning. At least Liberal candidate Terry Lake was inside, wearing his Blazers jersey and supporting the team without the need to tell voters about it. editor@kamloopsthisweek.com twitter.com/ChrisJFoulds
One would hope our local Conservative MP, Cathy McLeod, would issue a statement denouncing her party’s pathetic response to the weekend election of Justin Trudeau as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. No sooner had Trudeau won the leadership than the Conservative braintrust had ads out, belittling Trudeau’s experience, decrying his attendance in the House of Commons and using a photo of him at a charity event to attack him. The ads feature a mocking voice making fun of Trudeau’s array of jobs, including that of a drama teacher. In the Conservative mindset, then, teachers are not qualified to be prime minister, a job apparently reserved for policy wonks with economic degrees. The ads use a photo of a shirtless Trudeau in an attempt to further the Conservatives’ argument the Quebec MP is all style and no substance. The fact the photo was taken at a charity event to raise money for and awareness of prostate cancer — the very disease that contributed to the death of Trudeau’s father, Pierre Elliot Trudeau — only adds to the utter tastelessness of such an attack. But, this is par for the course with the Conservatives, who attacked Stéphane Dion as lacking the capacity to be a leader and who attacked Thomas Mulcair when he succeeded Jack Layton as NDP leader. The next federal election is two years from now. Could the Conservatives not have impressed and surprised us all by taking out ads congratulating Trudeau on his triumph and promising a fair, but tough battle? Would such an ad have not created a buzz that would have done wonders for the Conservatives? Instead, they decide to remain nasty and negative. A few years ago, McLeod told KTW she disagreed with a certain negative-ad campaign of her party. It was a refreshing take from a backbench MP, but one that remains rare. Perhaps McLeod will speak her mind and not recite the party line when asked about this latest example of lack of class.

Re: Letter: Let’s not become a mining town: “Just because KGHM Ajax is throwing money into the community does not ensure it will in any way be accountable for the irreparable damage that will be done to this town we call home. “Most people who want this mine here do not even live in Kamloops. I grew up here and do not want to lose it. “I work outside most of the year, I recreate outside and I live outside, except when it is too cold to do so. “This mine, being so close, will limit my fun and enjoyment, let alone the many real athletes who will choose not to train here.” — posted by Nathan Leduc

Ajax needs to be approved — and we need the jobs 77 VOTES Editor: I have been sitting back, watching the pages of KTW burn with hate over possibly the second-best thing that could happen to Kamloops — the first being an already-operating mine near Kamloops. I am a tradesman who gets to make a generous living and sleep in my own bed every night. I know many of my fellow tradesmen would love to have another 380 high-paying jobs in our mining town of Kamloops. Yes, I said mining town. Kamloops was funded by mining long before tourism and tournaments. According to the City of Kamloops website, gold attracted settlers to Kamloops in the 1850s. I have read that Kamloops city council exists to speak on behalf of the 86,000 people of Kamloops. If this is the case, should council mem-
bers not be open-minded, rather than opposed to the proposed Ajax mine, as two councillors are? I proudly display an “I Support Ajax” sticker on the back of my truck. Where is the city council member who represents me? There is a greater percentage of Kamloopsians who support Ajax than most people realize. Supporters of Ajax are in favour due to being educated on the facts. Ajax doesn’t need to produce half-hour propaganda movies throwing out scare tactics to get supporters. The Stop Ajax Mine group has done nothing but compare Ajax to the largest mines in North America, stretch facts to scare the public and litter our city with propaganda. How can Kamloops say no to hundreds of direct and indirect high-paying jobs?
Kamloops cannot survive off tourism and tournaments alone. Nobody can live comfortably off the $10 per hour minimum wage that tourism and tournaments provide, nor is everyone in a position that they can turn down these high-paying jobs because they collect a pension check. There are good reasons why the City of Kamloops doesn’t have a say on the approval of Ajax. The provincial and federal government ministers have the resources, education and facts to make such a decision. Those city council members opposed to Ajax are only opposed to play the people of Kamloops and win votes. I have full confidence that both levels of government will make the right decision and approve construction and operation of Ajax. Jason Currie Kamloops
Help Big Little Science Centre find permanent home in city Editor: The future of the Big Little Science Centre is unknown. Our lease at the former George Hilliard elementary expires on June 30. We are grateful to School District 73 for providing three sites for the past 13 years. A tentative site for our fourth school is the Twin Rivers Education Centre. However, the science centre needs at least as much space
2013 Tuesday April 23 | 5 pm - 8 pm Courthouse, Kamloops
as we now occupy and a stable lease. The centre has evolved into a very complex institution, serving thousands of students and visitors. It is not a simple matter to pack up eight rooms filled with scientific and office equipment and move every few years. We are a non-profit society and we rely on generous support from various sources, including School District 73. It might help our cause if our
customers — teachers, parents, students and former students — provided written commentary regarding the value of the centre. The science centre is truly an investment in young people. The centre future will be decided on by school trustees. Some trustees know what we do for school-district kids and teachers, but some may have never visited the centre when student activity is ongoing.
Therefore, they may not fully appreciate the value of what we do. Please consider writing the board of school trustees with your personal letter of support. If the Centre is to survive in Kamloops, we need guaranteed and unfettered support from everyone. Gordon R. Gore founder BIG Little Science Centre Kamloops

Kamloops students off to nation’s capital Pair representing local branch of Big Brothers-Big Sisters in Ottawa dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
Ashlee Speers is looking forward to everything she’ll experience this week as one of two teens at the Big Brothers Big Sisters MasterCard Social Innovators Youth Summit in Ottawa. But, for Brandon Hayashi, who left with Speers for the four-day event last weekend, there’s one highlight he’s looking forward to — hearing Olympic athlete Donovan Bailey talk. The pair, both students at South Kamloops secondary, are representing the Kamloops branch of Big Brothers-Big Sisters and agreed they’re excited to be heading to Ottawa — they’ve never been there before — to learn about leadership, community service and giving back to the community. Bailey is one of three keynote speakers; 2012 Miss America Laura Kaeppeler will speak on how to men-
tor teens whose parents are in jail or prison and Canadian sprinter Tania Archer will talk about paying it forward every day. Delegates are between the ages of 15 and 19 and were chosen based on their prior commitment to community involvement. Each will be given $100 as seed money to take home and use for a community project. Brandon said he’s thinking about something to help the Kamloops Food Bank while Ashlee is considering projects to help the Kamloops branch of the SPCA or organizations that work with special-needs youth. The conference started on Monday, April 15 and wraps up on Thursday, April 18. On Wednesday, April 17, all attending will be at Rideau Hall for a reception hosted by Governor General David Johnston, when Canada Post will unveil a commemorative stamp marking the centenary of Big Brothers-Big Sisters in Canada.

Books do Battle in Kamloops schools By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
Marty and Remi are close school friends convinced they are aliens and out to prove it by finding a spaceship. The pair — one Chinese and the other French-Canadian — are the protagonists in The Mystery of the Frozen Brains by Marty Chan. Seems like a natural book to appeal to young readers. And, it has the added benefit — from the viewpoint of the people behind the Battle of the Books — of being Canadian. It’s not easy to find Canadian books that meet the criteria to be involved in the annual event, although the goal is to try to have 50 per cent Canadian content. But, the overriding goal, said Faith Bailey, who brought the program to Kamloops schools a quarter-century ago, is to find books that kids want to read. And, of course, to create a love of reading. Bailey, a retired teacherlibrarian who has continued
David Thompson elementary students Molly Foxall (left) and Cali McKinlay compete in the 2011 Battle of the Books. This year’s district-level event is slated for tomorrow (April 17). KTW file photo
her involvement with the program, said at its essence, the Battle is a reading motivation program. Books are chosen for three categories of classes — grades three and four, Grade 5 and grades six and seven. Students who sign up will read from a list of books chosen every May by teacherlibrarians in the district. Then they will discuss them and quiz each other to make sure their team knows the plotline and can handle the questions they will be asked in competition. Twenty-six schools took
part in the zone-level round of the Battle last week, and 24 teams (three each from eight schools) will be at David Thompson elementary on Wednesday, April 17, for the district finals. Bailey first heard of the Alaskan Reading Motivation Program in the spring of 1987 and brought the idea to Kamloops that year. The first battle was on April 13, 1988, at Parkcrest elementary, where 18 local schools took part. Criteria for choosing books includes ensuring they will interest both boys and girls
and come from a variety of genres. There’s also a concerted effort to choose some books students might otherwise never pick up, Bailey said. This year’s list, for example, included Beezus and Ramona, Dragon in the Sock Drawer, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, The Wizard of Oz, The Hobbit and Phoenix Rising, among others, each grouped for the appropriate grade category. Readers can access practice questions to prepare to do battle at the zone level. Successful school teams each receive participation ribbons and the top two in each category are awarded medallions. At the district level, the top team in each level gets a keeper trophy and gift certificates from Bookland, and their school gets a large trophy to display for a year. And, because this is the 25th annual event, all district participants will receive a free book from a collection Bailey’s been saving up to help recognize the anniversary.

Cardinal flew with Raiders
RATTLERS RETURN
By Marty Hastings STAFF REPORTER sports@kamloopsthisweek.com
T
Lacrosse season is here and the senior Kamloops Rattlers were in action on the weekend. Kyle MacLennan of the Kelowna Raiders was able to beat Rattlers’ goaltender Mike Smith on this breakaway, but the Snakes downed the visitors from the Little Apple 14-7 at Memorial Arena on Friday, April 12. Turn to page A14 for more on that game and information on the junior B Venom, along with the novice and peewee Rattlers. Allen Douglas/KTW
HAT COP from Corner Gas used to play for the Kamloops Rugby Club Raiders. “I moved here and I said all I need to find a community is to find a rugby club and I found everybody I needed there,” said Lorne Cardinal, who played Sgt. Davis Quinton on the Canadian comedy series, which ran for six seasons on CTV. Cardinal mentioned his exploits with KRC during a speech at the Thompson Rivers University Alumni and Friends Distinguished Alumni Awards banquet, held on Friday, April 12, in the school’s Grand Hall. He told the crowd about moving to Kamloops in the 1980s to take a job planting trees during one of B.C.’s worst periods of unemployment in recent history. The accomplished actor — who played many positions with the Raiders, but preferred blindside flanker — found his calling in the River City. He came across a Cariboo College pamphlet, which listed the courses offered at the institution known today as TRU.
Lorne Cardinal, known best for his role on Corner Gas, used to scrum with the Kamloops Raiders. Shimon photo
Cardinal, then in his early 20s, enrolled in a spattering of what he called “easy-threecredit” courses, one of which was an introduction to acting class. He performed in front of a live audience in a one-act play at semester’s end and, after experiencing the thrill of taking a bow in front of more than 100 appreciative onlookers, Cardinal knew he was meant to be an actor. The Corner Gas cop was no slouch on the rugby pitch, playing for the Fraser Valley’s under-23 squad during his short-lived stint in Kamloops.
He left the Tournament Capital in 1989 for the University of Alberta, where he became one of the first aboriginal students at that school to obtain a bachelor of fine arts degree. Cardinal’s fondest memories of KRC, as is the case for many of the club’s alumni, were formed away from the field. “The clubhouse was always great,” he said. “It was behind Axel’s garage in the back. “All the guys were fantastic. The whole team. The whole organization was tight-knit.”

Venom set to defend provincial crown The Kamloops Venom begin their quest for a second straight junior B provincial championship on the weekend. Kamloops opens the Thompson Okanagan Junior Lacrosse League regular season against Armstrong on Saturday, April 20, at Memorial Arena. That tilt gets underway at 7:30 p.m. Unfortunately for the Snakes, they posted an 0-2 record at the annual TOJLL Ice Breaker in Armstrong. In Game 1 of the pre-season tournament, Kelowna downed Kamloops 8-3. The Rattlers, in their second game, fell 11-7 to Vernon. Scoring on the weekend for Kamloops were Kyle Gunn, Riley Polacik (3), Ryan Emery, Rob Peterson (2), Trent Mounder, Blair Hardman and Blaine Boomer. Marc Dumont and Matt Hans, who pitched in with two assists, split goaltending duties. Armstrong, Kelowna, South Okanagan (Penticton), Vernon and Kamloops are the league’s member teams. Gord Hardman is the Venom’s head coach. Shawn Donahue, Riley Donahue and Brandon

Pittman are the assistant coaches. Kamloops downed the Delta Islanders 6-3 on Aug. 5, 2012, to claim the provincial junior B title.
Senior Rattlers sting Raiders A.J. Lockwood and Riley Donahue paced the Kamloops Rattlers to a 14-7 win over the Kelowna Raiders in Thompson Okanagan Senior Lacrosse League play at Memorial Arena on Friday, April 12. Lockwood bulged the twine six times and Donahue added four goals in support of Kamloops netminder Mike Smith. Also scoring for the home team were captain Mark Jurista (2), Liam Hagerty and J.J. Woldum. The Rattlers are 1-0 heading into their second game of the season — a rematch with the Raiders in Kelowna on Friday, April 19. Kamloops is not playing again in the River City until May 3, when the Armstrong Shamrocks are in town.

Point night for novice Snakes If the scoring display put on by novice Kamloops Rattlers 3 in their regular-season opener on the weekend was a sign of things to come, the rest of the Thompson Okanagan Lacrosse League better take notice. Kamloops downed Salmon Arm 17-0 on Sunday, April 14. Scoring for the Rattlers were Justin Vinterlik (4G), Kade Deacon-Borden (3G, 1A), Caleb Campbell (3G, 1A), Luken Murray (2G, 1A), Eric Bogie (2G), Nate Van Unen (2G), Thorden Groenveld (1G, 1A) and Andon Rende (1A). Brendan Hunchak posted the shutout.
Interior rivalry renewed at Memorial Kamloops Rattlers 1 opened the Thompson Okanagan novice lacrosse league season with a 12-3 victory over Kelowna 2 on Saturday, April 13, at Memorial Arena. Reaching the
scoresheet for Kamloops were Ethan Kaban (3G), Jax Anderson (2G), Millan Webster (2G), Jackson Steed (2G, 2A), Dalton Fink (1G, 2A), Matthew Murphy (1G) and Jack Cameron (1G). Josh Hamling earned the goaltending victory in his debut between the pipes.

The Rattlers opened the season with an 8-2 victory over North Okanagan on Saturday, April 13, at Memorial Arena. On Sunday, April 14, the Rattlers fell 6-3 to Kelowna in a morning contest, but battled back to tie Kelowna 4-4 in an afternoon tilt. Times, do they really have to keep a changin’? Bob Dieno hopes to make the most of his time at the helm of the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
F
Bob Dieno, owner of Nu-Tech Fire and Safety and the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 president, wants to see the B.C. Chamber of Commerce lobby Victoria to abolish daylight saving time. Dave Eagles/KTW
OR MOST OF HIS LIFE, BOB Dieno figured daylight saving time was a global standard, put in place to help farmers make the most of their work days. Then, the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce president for 2013 — and the organization’s resident policy wonk — got researching. “Did you know only 76 countries have daylight saving time?” Dieno, who is also owner of Nu-Tech Fire and Safety, told KTW. “Less than half the world changes time.” He can’t blame farmers for the time change, either. Turns out many countries with daylight savings time signed on during the First World War, when it was seen as a way to conserve fuel. “The farmers hate it because the animals don’t like changing time,” he said. And, Dieno pointed to recent studies that connect time-shift to a rise in heart attacks and absenteeism at work — showing the human body doesn’t much like springing forward and falling back, either. “That’s what you find out when you dig into this stuff,” Dieno said. “I just started looking because I hate the time change.” Out of his research came one of the Kamloops’ Chamber of Commerce’s latest resolutions, which is headed to the B.C. Chamber of Commerce for debate. Should it be adopted, the provincial chamber will lobby the government to adopt yearround, permanent daylight saving time. Policy has been Dieno’s forte since he got involved with the chamber in 2008 — and it’s also one of the specialties of the organization he’ll head this year. Resolutions drafted by the local chamber have led to an express passport-renewal program and mobile-business licensing in some parts of B.C. that allows businesses to operate in several communities under one licence. Another resolution, drafted at the suggestion of Western Canada Theatre, urges the government to dole out arts grants in threeyear cycles to give organizations more stability and cut down the amount of money they have to spend on applying for funding. It’s also up for review by the B.C. chamber. “I love politics, that’s it.” Dieno said of policy-writing’s appeal. During his stint as president, he’s hoping to get the chamber’s membership more actively involved in the organizations, whether by attending socials to pointing out changes they’d like the government to make that could become new research projects. “We want to see more involvement in everything,” he said. “We really just want to make the members aware of what’s out there.”

Randy Bachman has received plenty of play in the Tournament Capital recently thanks to the red-hot Kamloops Blazers use of Takin’ Care of Business as their goal song. The Winnipeg-born rocker’s sounds will fill the air at Sagebrush Theatre, not Interior Savings Centre, during a concert on Saturday, April 20.
Bachman bringing legendary rock to Sagebrush By Dale Bass STAFF REPORTER dale@kamloopsthisweek.com
Randy Bachman has performed around the world — but the best venue he’s ever had for a gig is right here in B.C., the rock veteran said. “The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver,” he told KTW. “Many bands say it’s the best room, sound stage, venue in the world.” On Saturday, April 20, Bachman will be on the stage of Sagebrush Theatre and, while it may not be the best he’s played, it’s the best one for Kamloopsians who want to see and hear the man behind so many Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive hits. It’s a solo performance that will be more than just music as the Winnipeg native tells some of the stories behind the songs many sang along with as they played their air guitars. Hence the name he’s chosen for this trip out on the road — Vinyl Tap Tour: Every Song Tells a Story. (Vinyl Tap is the name of the CBC music show Bachman hosts). While his own writing is iconic, Bachman has his own list of favourite songwriters. When asked to name five, he came up
with seven, although he paired off six of them — John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Don Henley and Glen Frey and, all on his own, Brian Wilson. However, given the choice to share the stage — probably the Commodore — with any performer, Bachman said his choice would have to be Eric Clapton. Favourite gig ever? That would be playing with the Guess Who
at the SARS Festival in Toronto in 2003 and listening to the crowd of 500,000 singing along with Taking Care of Business. “It was amazing,” Bachman said. The 69-year-old made his first mark on the music industry when he was just three and won a singing contest. Two years later, he started studying violin. At age 16, he tried to get into a Les Paul concert at a club in Winnipeg but his age nixed that goal — so he
helped Paul set up for the show and load up afterward, asking only for Paul to teach him a lick. Instead, the man for whom a classic series of guitars — including Bachman’s favourite, a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Burst RI — bears his name taught him to play How High the Moon. His one-man show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available at the Kamloops Live Box Office, 1025 Lorne St., 250-3745483, kamloopslive.ca.

Ford’s Fusion hybrid scores well on many fronts STORY/B6

Last week I got to test drive the new 2013 NISSAN PATHFINDER. I’m a big fan of the new Pathfinder design - it’s much smoother-looking, and it has TONS of room! The 2nd & 3rd row seats recline individually, even with my son’s car seat strapped in, and the 2nd row seats can be slid back & forth on their own as well. Also, the proximity key and the push-button power liftgate trunk were really convenient when my hands were full!
Thank you River City Nissan!

mentally and even add a little more luggage room, although there are still compromises made for the sake of battery storage — 340 litres (12 cubic feet) of trunk space instead of 453 litres (16 cubic feet), a tire mobility kit instead of a spare tire, and a smaller 51 litre fuel tank (instead of 63 litres). The 2013 Fusion Hybrid features an all-new 2.0litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder gasoline engine, significantly downsized from the previous 2.5-liter unit, while maintaining roughly the same performance standards. The gasoline engine makes 149 horse power and 129 pound-feet of torque, and it combines with a permanent-magnet, AC-synchronous electric motor to churn out a net horse-power rating of 188 — marginally less than the previous model’s 191 net. But, the new 2013 Fusion Hybrid has also trimmed the fat by more than 100 pounds of weight — depending on trim and option levels — thanks to some of the aforementioned changes and an allnew lithium-ion battery pack that saves weight. The new batteries also generate more power than previous nickel-metal hydride batteries and help raise the electric-only maximum speed from 75 km/h to 100 km/h — opening up the potential for EV highway cruising. Manufacturers build hybrids for fuel economy bragging rights and Ford wasted little time in claiming the midsize fuel efficiency crown, boasting that the Fusion Hybrid would outperform midsize rivals like the Toyota Camry Hybrid and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. HE FORD FUSION HAS COME A LONG WAY IN A VERY SHORT 10 YEARS. It was born in the guise of a 427 Concept that was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in 2003. That concept just happened to look a heck of a lot like a certain critically acclaimed Cadillac CTS model, a car that had debuted just the year before. Or, at least, that was my immediate reaction at the unveiling, which got me an over-the-shoulder scowl from Ford’s design chief, J Mays. Well, maybe he got the point because an evolution of that initial design dropped the vertical headlights but stayed with the three-bar grille — a look that resonated with customers and soon spread to other vehicles in the Ford lineup. And, the Fusion became a best-seller — a bread-and-butter, five-passenger, mid-size mainstay that helped see Ford through the tougher years of automotive-industry troubles. Since then, the car has been revised and refreshed and the 2013 Fusion lineup adopts a new exterior style featuring a gape-mouth grille, probably adapted (in my opinion, again) from Mitsubishi’s Sabre Jet-inspired EVO design — a look that virtually every company seems to be copying these days. And, hmm, there might be just a dash of AstonMartin design DNA thrown into the mix, as well. But, while we might argue about styling inspirations, the net result is a sleek and seductive silhouette, an aggressive stance, nice lines and a handsome design that looks good from any angle. Look up the word “fusion” and you will find definitions that list “blending” and “combining” — apt descriptions for a lineup that offers a multitude of choices with naturally-aspirated and turbocharged engines, hybrid and plug-in-hybrid powertrain options, manual or automatic transmission choices, front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations and a wealth on new technologies that include Ford SYNC communications, optional auto start stop, a lane-keeping system, adaptive cruise control, active-park assist and Ford’s Blind Spot Information System, to name just a few. We’re concentrating on the Fusion Hybrid in this review and the good news here is that this high-tech offering maintains the same sporty style and sophistication as its non-hybrid model-mates, while expanding on an award-winning theme with new innovations and technologies. Like all Fusions, the new Hybrid is a little bigger than its predecessor. The wheelbase has been stretched by nearly five inches and the car is almost an inch-and-a-half longer, 3.4 inches wider and 2.3 inches taller. These dimensions bump up interior room incre-

Fusion hybrid features airy, larger interior X From B7
Transport Canada has rated the Fusion Hybrid at an optimistic 4.0/4.1L/100km (city/highway). The EPA in the U.S., using a somewhat more involved testing method, returned a more practical 5.0/5.0L/100km (city/hwy) rating, but even those more realistic numbers have come under fire from Consumer Reports and other testers who have been unable to achieve the same results. My test methods are quite simple. When I picked up the car, the trip computer gave me a 7.2L/100km average for the 1,600 kilometres driven by the previous driver. I hoped to do better than that. Topping off the tank before driving 445 kilometres — a roughly even split of highway and city driving — I refuelled with 30.2 litres of gas for a 6.8L/100km combined average. We can pooh-pooh those results compared to the official rating but, based on my experience with other hybrids, that’s still a respectable result and, by driving moderately and following the onscreen brake coach guidance to maximize regenerative braking, I did manage to earn 180 kilometres of electric-only driving out of that sum total. What’s equally important here is that the Fusion is a pleasure to drive — perky when needed, accelerating with a smooth linear progression of power, complemented by an able electronicCVT transmission and a seamless interplay of effort from the gasoline engine and electric motor. The Fusion also features a slightly stiffer body, independent suspension and electric-steering combine for above-average handling and excellent cornering. I’ve concentrated mainly on fuel economy and performance in this story, but I should note drivers and passengers will also be quite comfortable in an airy and spacious cabin with new seating, a driver-oriented cockpit and the latest generation combination of Ford’s SYNC technology and MyFord Touch communication and infotainment systems, allowing interaction through voice control, a touch-screen tap or with a conventional button. Strangely, gloved fingers work on the touch screen, but not on the instrument panel. And, some of the trim pieces could use a minor upgrade but, on the whole, the 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid is an all-around good effort — and its sophisticated collection of technologies and performance dynamics gives you a pretty good indication of why it won its class as AJAC’s 2013 Best New Family Car Over $30,000. Yes, the Fusion lineup has come a long way over the past decade — and, it still has a ways to go. But, together with its much-anticipated Energi Plug-In sibling, Ford’s 2013 Fusion Hybrid offers a pleasant package of driving dynamics and fuel economy and a viable midsize family car alternative for environmentally conscious consumers.
The 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid SE is not exactly your average fuddy-duddy hybrid. This sleek, stylish performer is enhanced with the 18-inch wheels and sporty spoiler of an added Appearance Package.

With the secondgeneration of the Panamera GT sedan, Porsche is introducing the world’s first plugin hybrid to the luxury class. Along with the 416 horse power Panamera S E-Hybrid, two luxurious executive versions are also making their debut, with an extended wheelbase and an entirely new three-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine for the Panamera S and Panamera 4S. New and further developed technologies have enabled fuel savings of up to 56 per cent, while further enhancing operating and driving comfort and performance. The new generation celebrates its world premiere at the Shanghai Auto Show, which opens its doors on April 21. The Panamera S E-Hybrid is a systematically advanced development of the parallel full hybrids with a more powerful electric motor, a higher-performance battery that supplies more energy and the ability to charge it externally from the electrical grid. The electric drive produces 95 horse power (70 kW), which is more than double the power of the previous model’s electric motor at 47 horse power (34 kW). It draws its energy from a newly developed lithium-ion battery, which, at 9.4 kWh, has over five times the 1.7 kWh energy capacity of the previous battery in nickel metal-hydride technology. The new generation of Panamera models will be launched in Canada in the fall. Prices start at $89,500 for the Panamera, rising to $94,800 for the Panamera 4. The Panamera S is priced at $106,600 and the Panamera 4S at

STOLEN MOMENTS SQUARED: On March 27, 35 square and round dancers from Salmon Arm and Blind Bay arrived on a bus to take part in a Hawaiian theme dance with the Kamloops Square Dance Club. There is an old custom that if a caller and square of dancers arrived at another club’s regular dance night, they are allowed to “bannernap” (kidnap) that club’s banner. The only way it can be retrieved is if the club from which it was stolen arrives on a regular dance night. Lessons will start in September with a 10-week course. More information about the dance club can be found by calling 250 376-5636, emailing meyerdance@telus.net or going online to DancingKeepsYouYoung. ca and TakeMeDancing.squaredance.bc.ca.
HE SKETCHES, SHE SCORES!: KTW’s Kamloops Blazers art contest winner Keegan Leblanc (right) and brother Logan celebrate outside Kamloops This Week’s Dalhousie Drive office. Keegan won a Blazer jersey and a hockey stick signed by all players, along with tickets to a playoff game. Andrea Klassen/KTW
BOOST FOR BRONSON: Real Canadian Superstore gathered its staff recently to present a $20,000 donation to help 10-year-old Bronson Sens have greater mobility through the funding of a wheelchair-accessible van designed to transport kids like Bronson, who lives with encephalitis since he was three years of age. Through the President’s Choice Children’s Charity, local kids living with disabilities receive a boost via financial grants for essential specialized equipment and essential therapists. On-hand to mark the moment was Bronson’s mom, Kim Becker, Real Canadian Superstore financial administrator Chris Brown, store manager Glenn Gregory and Bronson’s brother, Cooper. Dave Eagles/KTW

In Memory of
April 16, 2011
O Lord, life isn’t the same since Mom died; I will never forget Mom always stood by my side. I keep remembering about the special times we shared, I keep thinking about how much you cared. Each day we think about you And realise you have gone, We can’t explain the emptiness That life has now become. They say that time’s a healer, But we are not too sure, For every time we think of you We miss you more and more.
Dad you are dearly loved and missed by your family
Lord, I’m doing all that I can to be strong, It feels as though a part of me is gone. Each time I think of you my heart hurts so much, I long for your gentle touch. I long for one more big hug and one more call to say good night, I LOVE you Mom with all of my might.
Our Friend, Our Hero, My Husband, Our Dad Two years have passed but not a day goes by where you are not remembered. Your spirit lives strong in each one of us. We miss you dearly. You would be so proud of our daughters!
God Bless. “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain “ ... REV. 21:4

KEN NAGEL

TO ALL PARENTS
By Edgar Guest
“I’ll lend you for a little time A child of Mine” He said, “For you to love while he lives, And mourn when he is dead. It may be six or seven years, Or twenty-two or three, But will you, till I call him back Take care of him for Me? He’ll bring his charms to gladden you, And should his stay be brief, You’ll have his lovely memories As solace for your grief.
It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of Ken Nagel of Kamloops, BC, on April 7th, 2013 at 80 years of age. Ken is survived by his children, Debra Alain, Dean (Sue) Nagel and David (Terri) Nagel, grandchildren Natalie Loisoa, Desiree Nagel, Adam Alain, Virginia Stanton, Dustin Nagel, Morgan Alain, Connor Nagel and Aleah Taylor. Ken is also survived by his sister Lori (Bob) Johnson, brother Andrew (Teri) Nagel and all their children. He is predeceased by wife Eleanor, parents Paul and Lillian and brother Harvy. Ken was born August 18th, 1932 in Eatonia, Saskatchewan. Ken worked on the family farm in his younger years. He taught himself to play the saxophone and piano. The end of the harvest could never come fast enough for Ken, as he couldn’t wait to go out goose hunting. Ken met Eleanor Arnesen to whom he got married in 1955. They moved to Kamloops in 1971 where Ken got a job with CN until his retirement. Always with a quick wit and dry sense of humor, Ken was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Special thanks to the staff of 6 South and the many wonderful people of Hospice. As per the family’s wishes, there will be no formal service. Arrangements entrusted to Kamloops Funeral Home Condolences may be sent to the family from www.kamloopsfuneralhome.com
I cannot promise he will stay Since all from earth return, But there are lessons taught down there I want this child to learn. I’ve looked the wide world over In my search for teachers true, And from the throngs that crowd life’s lanes, I have selected you. Now will you give him all your love, Nor think the labour vain, Not hate Me when I come To call and take him back again? I fancied that I heard them say Dear Lord, Thy will be done. For all the joy this child shall bring, The risk of grief we’ll run. We’ll shelter him with tenderness. We’ll love him while we may, And for the happiness we’ve known Forever grateful stay. And should the angels call for him Much sooner than we’d planned, We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes And try to understand.
If I Knew If I knew it would be the last time That I’d see you fall asleep, I would tuck you in more tightly and pray the Lord, your soul to keep. If I knew it would be the last time that I see you walk out the door, I would give you a hug and kiss and call you back for one more. If I knew it would be the last time I’d hear your voice lifted up in praise, I would video tape each action and word, so I could play them back day after day. If I knew it would be the last time, I could spare an extra minute to stop and say “I love you,” instead of assuming you would KNOW I do. If I knew it would be the last time I would be there to share your day, Well I’m sure you’ll have so many more, so I can let just this one slip away. For surely there’s always tomorrow to make up for an oversight, and we always get a second chance to make everything just right. There will always be another day to say “I love you,” And certainly there’s another chance to say our “Anything I can do?”
But just in case I might be wrong, and today is all I get, I’d like to say how much I love you and I hope we never forget. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, young or old alike, And today may be the last chance you get to hold your loved one tight. So if you’re waiting for tomorrow, why not do it today? For if tomorrow never comes, you’ll surely regret the day, That you didn’t take that extra time for a smile, a hug, or a kiss and you were too busy to grant someone, what turned out to be their one last wish. So hold your loved ones close today, and whisper in their ear, Tell them how much you love them and that you’ll always hold them dear Take time to say “I’m sorry,” “Please forgive me,” “Thank you,” or “It’s okay.” And if tomorrow never comes, you’ll have no regrets about today.
